Stayed at this resort December 5-19th, 2011 and was appalled that this is sold as a 4 star resort. This hotel is located in a very rural area of the DR. The local employees have very little training and understanding of customer service. Guile, arrogance and aggressiveness were the norm.

Poor food handling, many guests reported diarrhea with one guest evacuated for IV drip. Very disappointing. We ate all our meals in the village for the second week, which was expensive, although we felt much better within a day of doing so.

Poor food selection with a ten-item buffet plus salad for 1000 people. The same food every day, cooked very poorly, sometimes burnt black, always overcooked, never tasty and sometimes spoiled. Green lunch meat, rotting fish, canned sauces, decomposing salad, etc.

Poor sanitation with guests expected to use wastebaskets for used toilet paper. Poor housekeeping with no cleaning unless supervised. Poor sanitary conditions for laundry, etc. with poop-stained towels left in bathroom as "clean". Restaurant and bar dishes are washed by hand in tap water (which you cannot drink) which means they sometimes have food on them or they are greasy.

Misc. stuff: Asked front desk to change rooms because ours was too near restaurant and show stage. We were told that we have a room and the hotel doesn't change rooms for guests (even though the resort was 50% occupied). Maid banged on door in the morning until someone opened it and then reprimanded us for not using the DND sign. Boys at front desk are arrogant and aggressive; we were told that wearing the ID bracelet on our watches was not allowed and WE WERE TOLD TO CHECK OUT IMMEDIATELY but then they changed their minds when we said OK. lol

Sunwing.ca rep offered us another hotel in Puerto Plata for an additional $500 for travel or to leave the island would cost $700 pp.

I have stayed at other all-inclusive resorts in the DR and they were okay. This one has serious problems. I was just looking for a quiet 4 star resort so I could rest quietly for two weeks, not to have problems with a sub-standard resort.

This is a choke rating this hotel a 4 star. The food is terrible. The beach What beach ? 2 feet of sand, full of sea weeds. Bugs in the room, water dripping (Bring ear plugs). Food was horrible. You will never see me again. No Wi Fi need to pay for it and when you use it you are in a dark area not your room. Entertainment was OK but not the greatest.

Arrival:
September 9, 2012

Beach/Pools/Grounds:
Beach sucks
Pools are OK
Grounds poor

Activities on and off the Resort/Hotel:
No activities on resort. Shows at night.

Other Comments:
If it wasn't for Frank A. who entertained us the week it would of dragged on. He was so friendly and very helpful. He made sure we were comfortable. He steals the show every night. He was very funny and he is a great guy to meet. Well done Frank

We started off with a negative, by getting an old run down room far away from anything, despite request to be close to amenities and a kingsize bed, so we upgraded to an ocean view in order to get a king size bed...they only have 4.From the beginning, we had non-stop issues...hot water in shower on last morning, air conditioning finally kicked in on last night, despite mechanic working above our heads at 10pm on first night to try to get it working...TV sometimes worked...whenever we needed to get into room, had to go all the way back to reception to have our key reprogrammed. The second day in they decided to paint our room and threw all of our belongings on the bed...then they fumigated...most of the time our room was not done up before 4:30PM.
The food in the dining room was terrible, except the omelet cooked to order for breakfast, but we later discovered the seaside buffet to be much better, so we ate there for most meals. There seemed to be a constant shortage of dishes, cutlery, food, drinks, blankets...you name it...
Normally we generously tip, but that didn't seem to increase service at this place...The staff appear very disinterested in giving good service.
Normally we also are not complainers, and have learned that by tipping, we get good service and have a great time! This is our 8th different resort we have been to, and this worst!

Room Number:
1229

Room Block:
1

Arrival:
That's when it all started...with a disgusting dirty, moldy room...

Rooms:
The ocean view was a long ways from anything, and I had requested close to all amenities, due to my husbands walking difficulties...the room was tired, but in decent repair...other than no hot water, air conditioning and TV not working.

Restaurants and Bars:
Once we discovered the seafood buffet, we booked in there every night, as we got better quality salad bar and food...if you don't book by 7 am they put up a sign that says it's fully booked, but the restaurant was empty most nights...we could only surmise it was staff problems.

Beach/Pools/Grounds:
The beach is quite beautiful, lots of lounge chairs available, and nice walking trails to town. There is no snorkeling available, and that is one of my highlights, usually. The grounds are lush, due to frequent rains, and well maintained by grounds people.
The pools are small but very nice, and kept clean.Harder to get lounge chairs, but that's a common problem at most resorts.

Other Comments:
I think this was once a very beautiful place, but it is sadly neglected...the walkways are dangerous with uneven bricks...rooms tired...

We had a two week stay at his resort. I wanted to rate this hotel a 2.5, but there are no half points on the rating system. Considering we only paid $1150 per person, we got what we paid for I suppose. The food overall is fine, but don't expect anything really familiar. We were expecting 2 a la carte restaurants and a buffet, as well as 5 bars. There were only 2 bars open and 1 buffet restauraunt during the week. The buffet converted to a la carte a couple of times during our stay. The only time all the restauraunts and bars were open were on weekends when the locals came to stay. They were served first and given preferential treatment. I can understand the staff kowtowing to them as they were probably intimidated by the demands and obnoxious behavior of these guests. First time in my life I had to literally fight to get food on my plate!
As mentioned in previous reviews, the pillows are awful so we brought our own and were grateful we did. The rooms were kept clean enough, but refills on shampoo and conditioner were non existant and hopefully you get your two water bottles in the fridge daily. There are only handtowels and and bath towels available, so bring your own faceclothes.
The ATM was broken the entire time we were there, so you have to use the one in town, not very far and a very scenic walk.
On the bright side, the resort is beautiful, as is the beach. The staff is wonderful, especially the Animation staff. They work very long hours for very little money. The shows they put on and the effort they make to entertain both kids and adults is commendable.
The highlight of our trip was the people we met and the Quad trip we took.

Arrival:
We were greeted and taken to our room in very good time.

Rooms:
Rooms are very simple, with a small fridge, one dresser, closet and a fair size bathroom

Restaurants and Bars:
When they are open, it's great. Food is much better when the locals come on the weekends.

Beach/Pools/Grounds:
Beautiful and clean

Activities on and off the Resort/Hotel:
Lots to do

We have at least 35 all inclusive vacations under our belt so we know what to expect. This hotel is one of the most beautiful we have seen. But everything stops there. The food was average at best and we never seen bacon once. The rooms are nice and clean and the staff are great. The nearby town was so small that we seen everything in less than 30 minutes and the grocery store that we bought our rum at stunk so bad I thought I was going to vomit. There were at least 2 tourists robbed at knife point on the path that goes to the town so if you plan to us this path go in large groups. A young man we met was robbed at knife point right in front of reception at 4 am. There is not much to do at this resort and we found it very boring. The young people there told us that the disco was a joke and they too found the resort boring. We have stayed at the Paridise in Puerto Plata at least 9 times and it was great so we thought this hotel owned by the same company would be the same but we were wrong. Never again !!!!

Other Comments:
Not a resort for young people. More like a retirement home.

Arrival:
This was the second week of our honeymoon as we had our first week in a very beautiful hotel with no faults. On arrival at this hotel the staff were most unhelpful and could not speak English and we could not get into our room when we got there after a 3 hour taxi drive, it was pouring with rain and we did not know where to go. We eventually found the one bar that was open and waited there until our room was ready. As this was our honeymoon we should have received a basket of fruit and a bottle of Rum in our room, this never happened and our honeymoon was never acknowledged by the hotel.

Rooms:
Once in our room we were most disappointed, it was not very clean, we had ripped sheets on the bed and the towels had seen better days. Very lumpy and uncomfortable pillows. The hairdryer did not work and overnight our fridge had switched itself off and had leaked water all over the floor. The toiletries were never replenished. The only good thing about the room was that our water was refilled every day. My husband was bitten every night in bed by bugs. The bathroom ceiling was falling down and the bath plug was indescribable.

Restaurants and Bars:
There should have been 3 restaurants and 5 bars open but there was only one restaurant and two bars open our entire stay apart from our last weekend when all the locals came and they were then opened and the locals were given preferential treatment. We found while the locals were at the hotel it was impossible to get food with the rudeness of the Dominicans, they were also very obnoxious and constantly stared at you which made you feel very uncomfortable.

Beach/Pools/Grounds:
The pools in our opinion could have been cleaner but they were ok, there was an adult only pool and we thought we would stay by that pool the weekend the locals descended on the hotel but this was not the case as it was full of Dominicans and children which made it to not be a very relaxing time. The ground were paradise looking with the beach and palm trees but it was very difficult to find your way around and it was poorly lit all the time.

Activities on and off the Resort/Hotel:
The activity staff did their very best to entertain us with a good show every evening and this was probably the best part of the holiday as they were all very friendly and made you feel welcome, they work extremely long hours for very little money and did their best for us.

Other Comments:
Our personal opinion is that this was our honeymoon, and although we had a good first week in the first hotel, we had a poor and awful time in our second week and has not given us the memories that we wanted to take away with us. This hotel was rated as a 3+ but I would give it only a 1+ and it has put us off from ever returning to the Dominican Republic again.

I will never go back. I find the staff not to be very honest.

Room Number:
3231

Arrival:
Went very smoothly

Rooms:
Bungalows were very roomy and clean. All staff wanted to see the colour of your money before they granted you almost anything

Restaurants and Bars:
Food was tasteless, meat dry, tough, vegetables were over cooked and cold.
Restaurants ran out of wine a few time at the dinner hour. Ran out of coffee one morning.
Drinks flowed nicely, but staff made you feel like the were doing you a favour.

Beach/Pools/Grounds:
These area's were nicely kept, well groomed and clean

Activities on and off the Resort/Hotel:
Nice places to visit and enough activities on the resort to keep one occupied

Other Comments:
Beach towel were hard to get, they seemed to be in the wash all the time.

The grounds, buildings and room were very nice, but the food, service was the worst. My husband and I have well over 20 all inclusives around the world under our belts and this is one that I would never visit again.

Room Number:
3032

Arrival:
arrived around 10.00 p.m. and other than having trouble finding our bungalow the check in went smoothly

Rooms:
The rooms were nice and spacious, but we had ants and it took the cleaning staff almost all day to clean. One person came in the morning to remove the used towels and then returned sometime later in the day. Then someone else came in and cleaned the bathroom and made the bed, Then someone else came in when ever and washed the floors. It seemed that someone was in your room all day. We could not get our safe to work and were not given a refund.

Restaurants and Bars:
TThe food was over cooked, the meat was tough, the vegetables were over cooked and cold. They ran out of wine two night and the staff were not very helpful.
The bars were not too bad except most of the staff made you feel like they were doing you a favour, Most of the staff could not give you the time of day until they saw the colour of your money.

Beach/Pools/Grounds:
The pools were small but clean. We had real trouble getting beach towels. Unless you went to the towel stand very early in the morning you were always showen a sign that said that the towels were in the laundry. We had to share our towel with another couple.
The grounds were well maintained and clean.
The beach was alright. Nothing to write home about.
The entire place seemed to have a shortage of lounge chairs both on the beach and around the pool.

Activities on and off the Resort/Hotel:
The activities once again were nothing to write home about except the ATV ride off the resort was very nice and interesting.

I would not go back to this resort.

Arrival: April 11 to 18
Flight was fine, arrived on time. Staff at airport snapped at me because he couldn't see my tourist card but it was in my hand. Two hours on a bus on a road with potholes everywhere. I was relieved to make it in one piece. Check-in went smooth.

Rooms
The room was fine, housekeeping did an okay job on certain days, bad on others. We do not speak french or spanish fluently but they stuck us on the french side of the resort and we had to deal with parties every night. Loud enough to shake the glass doors on the balcony. We complained every night but did not get any help at all. They actually wanted us to pack up at 11 at night and move to another room.

Restaurants and Bars
Food was good enough, I got sick one day. I lost 8 pounds in a week there. If you found one wait staff that spoke english you were lucky.

Beach/Pools/Grounds
Beach was okay. The water gave us rashes. We went to Playa Rincon, which you needed to take a boat to, and it was beautiful. You had to pay to use it. The swimming pools at the resort were okay, but not deep enough.

Activities on and off the Resort/Hotel
The couple with me took an ATV tour. They went for 6 1/2 hours and came back red and brown from the dirt. My friend was not happy about the ATV ride. Too long. We also went to Limon Falls. We took a taxi, and then rode horses down. The horse ride was scary, the horses weren't taken care of and just about collapsed. The walk down the rest of the way was fine, but the walk up was really hard. The falls were worth it though.

Other Comments
I would not go back to this resort. The way they cater to the french bothered me and the rest of my friends. The parties every night were awful. The front desk was awful. A couple from Calgary had to go into Samana to get money because there was no money in the bank machine. Gifts were expensive. Someone was always trying to sell you something, and they were very forward and wouldn't leave when you said no. So if you like 90's dance music with french lyrics pounding outside your door all night, and DON'T want to relax on your vacation go here.

Arrival: Feb 8th to 22nd
Air Canada vacations 6am to Toronto 8;30 to Samana OH add an extra 1 hr 15 minutes to that for delays, arrived at 3:30 PM Sunday the 8th via Air Canada After an exciting 2 hrs to hotel when it shold of been 45 min. ( A LIE ) Wife being a Diabetic and waiting 12 hrs was desperate for a little food so she could to take her insulin. She was told absbsolutely not" wait till 6:30. No porters or smiles upon arrivals, just a bunch of long faces and a run down lobby.

Rooms
I know for sure a lot of people that write reviews have never been to a true 4 star resort before. But I can assure them them, they will find shock and AWW when they visit a true 4 star. These rooms are a joke !!! Have you ever heard the phrase of pinch a penny to save nickle, Steal from Peter to give to paul. No TV for two weeks, no water first two days had to fight to get it. Need soap or shampoo gring your own to eliminate the hassel. Toilet sinks not cleaned even tough we left 2 bucks aday plus sweets. We had a different maid for two days and she was very appreciative and did a good job.

Restaurants and Bars
What can I say ! 30 out of 34 people got ill including wife and myself , that really makes for a great holiday. This is the worst We've ever experienced anywhere out of 7 resorts. Buffets are so small you better get there early to eat the raw food, ever watch a pride of lions on TV feeding on a fresh kill, Well these Europeans and their so called refinement just went down the indoro and I mean literally, We ate bread the last four days as you would get sick just looking at the food.

Beach/Pools/Grounds
Pools great for kids ! To small to swim in for adaults, NO swim up bars bars about 200ft away. Bar tenders very good especially when you tip them like we did, got great service. The boos is cheap but who cares we didn't drink enough where that matters. Grounds are well kept and basically makes this place looks better then it really is. BEACH" have any of you ever been to a beach ?

After Cuba and Punta Cana, Sant domingo area. There is NO Beach here ! It is low tide when they take their pics, at high tide water is to the tree lines and if you notice everyone lying on the grass , not on the beach. You think you can just walk out into the ocean wrong I broke my big toe first time out, all weeds and sink holes so good luck there. The only place you can go is where they sell snorkel and Scuba trips and walk out from there, it's alright. Lots of loungers but hard to get away from the sun.
