Sosua Information

Sosua hotels are in general a little smaller and provide a more personal experience. True, Sosua can be a little rough around the edges but, as a young attractive woman who normally travels alone, I never felt unsafe or intimidated. I recommend a visit to this small creative town made up of a mix of locals and foreign nationals who settled here in the 1970’s and 1980’s, to anyone who is young at heart and wants to experience daily life in a laid-back Dominican beach town.

Sosua that consist of various neighborhoods of which El Batey and los Charamicos are most important. The majority of tourists stay in the El Batey district full of shops, little bars and restaurants. Of course there are large resorts that offer great all-inclusive deals but when staying in Sosua I go for the intimacy of a small hotel with only a few rooms like Hotel Piergiorgio Palace, which is also well known for its excellent restaurant where I have a lovely supper the first night of my stay. A great location for a wedding party or honeymoon! The rest of my vacation I will enjoy walking around town in search for nice restaurants.
The cozy bars are great for conversing with friends and the locals. They all stay open until late, just like the discos, although the myth that Sosua parties through the night is slightly exaggerated. Sosua’s crescent shaped bay attracts many water sports enthusiast, including snorkelers and divers because of its reef sheltered, calm and warm waters.

Sosua feels like arriving at a party where everyone is happy to see you. Just minutes after I step out of the front door of Hotel Piergiorgio Palace I place my feet on the wonderful soft white sand of the beach were local families gather and friends sit down with a freezing bottle of Presidente beer or a Banana Mama. I hook up with a group of Domino players, smile back at some beach vendors who found it necessary to make some flattering remarks about my looks and strike up a long conversation with Derrick aka Big D, who runs the “Famous BBQ Spare Ribs & Chicken” beach joint. The beach market is another great Sosua attraction. Here you can easily pay too much for a authentic Dutch wooden shoe made in China but also can use your bargaining skills and walk away with a t-shirt that you will cherish for years to come. This is Sosua, without a doubt one of the best places to find out more about the wonderful Dominican people.

How to get there
Whenever possible I fly to Gregorio Luperón International Airport near Puerto Plata. From here it is easy to get to Sosua (25 kilometers to the west). Santiago's Cibao International Airport is located about an hour south of beach town Puerto Plata.
While in Sosua you can get around town on foot or moto concho if you are staying in the neighborhoods of El Batey or Charamicos. The streets are well lit and there are lots of people outside, day and night.

Tours and attractions
Sosua is a destination that likely will keep you fully entertained during your stay. While on the beach you can play volleyball, try windsurfing, go snorkeling, scuba diving, golfing or fishing or just lay in the sand with a cocktail. Of course there are many excursions available which take you out of town. Tours to all parts of the country can be booked at hotels or other tourist places. Nearby Puerto Plata organizes two major festivals each year, the cultural festival, which is held during the third week of June, and the Merengue Festival the first week of October. (I suggest you check for exact dates.)
