Gillian ~ Evora, Portugal |
August 2009
Arrival: 21-28 July 2009
We arrived on 21st July after an 8 hour flight from Lisbon with the charter company White. A good flight with animators for the children who entertained them with magic tricks, trips up to the cockpit etc. which seemed to make the flight go much quicker. A good flight with only a little turbulence on the way so no complaints there.
After leaving the airport we were greated by Silvia the Soltour rep at the El Portillo. We were put straight on a bus and given our check-in envelopes with our room number etc. We had to fill in a few forms - a word to anyone travelling from Portugal - bring a pen! We didn't and had to borrow constantly as we weren't prepared to fill in lots of paperwork. Also bring US$ as you pay the same to get in and out of the country in either dollars or euros - 30 per person, so with exchange rates it's cheaper in dollars. The journey to the hotel took one and a half hours - not the 45 minutes we had been told. It wasn't too bad a journey although it did start to rain and that slowed us down (a bit!). I think our driver had a hot date as he was hell bent on overtaking anything that appeared before him, including the other bus that had the rest of our flight on board!!! Anyway, no need for the sickbags I'd taken off the plane as a precaution. We arrived to the animation team singing and dancing with a drink so that was nice and we set off to find our room. This proved a bit tricky as we weren't familiar with the room numbering system. We had emailed the hotel two weeks before asking for villa 2, so when I saw that our room number was 2105 I was pleased. However, staff at the hotel immediately said we were in room twenty one oh five which sent us off looking for villa 21 and me feeling very deflated!! But when we did eventually find our room after much searching and never actually finding villa 21!, we were in fact in villa 2 right next to the beach. A word to the wise, if your room number has 4 digits then the first digit is your villa number 1-9 and the other three digits your room number. If your room number has 5 digits then the first two numbers are your villa number 10-24 and the other three your room number. This should save you time and shoe leather when you arrive as the staff we asked all told us villa 21 and noone ever said try villa 2.
Rooms:
We had only booked a standard room and our room was ample with a huge king size bed and a child's bed made up for our 8 year old son. The bathroom was a good size and all was spotless. We had hot water and great pressure every day so no complaints there. We decided to rent the safe for 29$ for the week and although I read lots of reviews where people complained about having to pay for the safe, we didn't mind as it meant we had peace of mind for the whole week. Also the hotel takes responsibility if anything goes missing from the safe and they don't if anything goes missing from your room. We left the maid a dollar a day and a few small gifts - as tipping for these kind of services is not common in Portugal not many of the Portuguese I spoke to did this, and they still got the same service as we did. But we felt that as it is such a poor country and wages aren't up to much, every little helps.
Restaurants and Bars:
We ate breakfast and dinner in the buffet Las Dalias every day and never had any problems. Lots of selection and as we're not fussy eaters had good meals all the time. As we love the beach we had lunch at the Las Olas snack bar every day as they serve chicken, burgers, hot dogs, salads, fruit etc. Again, no problems there. All water is bottled, including what they make ice from so you don't have to worry on that front. We only ate once in the gourmet restaurant and we did find it disappointing. I think the buffet restaurant is the best - every night it has a different theme so there's plenty of variety and it's quick.
Beach/Pools/Grounds:
The pool was busy every day but as we have a pool at home in Portugual we are definitely beach lovers. The beach is fantastic - unspoilt with great coral right in front of the hotel. The best is the one just in front of the water sports centre with a great variety of fish. Free watersports every day went down well - cayaking, snorkelling etc. which most people took advantage of. Vendors on the beach were friendly - we bought 3 large paintings for 50$ (in the hotel they were 60$ each), two wooden statues for 30$ and also some T-shirts. We never felt threatened or hastled to buy anything.
Activities on and off the Resort/Hotel:
We didn't go on any tours but the consensus was they were a little expensive. A couple we met did go to see the El Limon waterfall with one of the vendors from the beach and paid 30, each and didn't have any problems but it's not advised.
Other Comments:
Our first trip to the DR and won't be our last. We thought the hotel was great, had a fantastic holiday, the staff were on the whole friendly and helpful and the service was good. We really have no complaints and hope to go back again next year.

April 2009
Arrival: Mar 28 - April 4
Okay..so it was a bit bumpy and scary..the bus ride that is. You are in a third world country not in New York...hmm let me think..that is scary too! We were given envelopes with all our resort info and pre-checked in...no waiting in long lines to do that. Our tour operator Edith from Air Canada suggested we go to the buffet and have some lunch and then check in at the a la cartes to book for our 4 specialty restaurants. Weather was great for the week..hot & humid!
Rooms
The resort is not large so getting to your building was never a far walk...not like in Mexico were you take the little shuttles to get around. Our room was in building 23..top floor..no elevator..although it was only three floors by the end of a hot day at the beach it felt like 20 floors! All in all gave us some good excersize! We had two queen beds (a bit firm as I'm spoiled with my pillowtop mattress)--great for us (sisters) but they do have king size for couples. The room was always clean...no bugs or scary critters..the shower pressure was good but for one small incident...we did have varying water temp at times but nothing to complain about. We did have an issue with the A/C..we probably should have said something, we talked to others and they were moved or had it fixed.I was fine as the fan kept things moving..again we are in a third world country and I didn't pay a zillion $ for this package. We did leave the gal small gifts and money each day...but never did get a towel animal..oh boohoo. Our turn down service was nice...even got chocolates on the pillow each night. Our safe cost was include in our package as was the bathrobes and slippers. We did leave $ in the fridge the first day and did get more Beer (Cervesa) but we didn't need it as we got everything we could drink on the resort. The water is bottled in the room and they have safe drinking water at the restaurants and a la cartes. We spent little time in our room.
Restaurants and Bars
The buffets were fine..I would stay far away from the eggs at the buffet in the morning and head straight for the fresh cooked egg station...here they make omlettes and fried eggs to your taste...mmmm yummy. Lots of fresh fruit, variety of cold cereals, breads for toast, juices, yogurt & pasteries. The sausage was ok and bacon was done well too. Enjoyed their coffee too. I enjoyed the Sushi on Asian night..we did eat at the Gourmet (2X), Oriental and the Italian...we heard the goumet was the best but our first experience was just okay..the steak was tough..second time we walked out after our meat was served like hockey pucks...we had a late sitting 8:30 PM...thanks goodess for the buffet! The Oriental was our favorite..funny others hated it...the Italian was just fair...If I return..I will only eat at the buffets..go around 6:30 Pm for dinner at the buffets..everything is nice and fresh and good selection.
They had a lot of "refreshment" AKA booze stations thruout--alcoholic and non-alcoholic. Never a lack of cervesa on tap.The speciality coffee station in the evening was great..they go down real easy!We never got sick eating or drinking the water on the resort...be very cautious if you go off the resort.
Beach/Pools/Grounds
The beach was fabulous...very clean and never a problem getting a chair..people do get there early and put their towels on to reserve. Should be a 30 minute restiction as some people don't show up until after lunch. Lots of European ladies ban their tops but after acouple of days you don't even notice anymore. The vendors that sell their wares don't bug you if you wave them on..I just said no deneros and they left quickly. I did barter on a few pieces and got REALLY good deals. We didn't spend too much time at the pool...the beach was awesome and the water warm.We enjoyed watching the kite sufing and people watching. There is a great snack bar with a buffet.12-3 PM..the Chicken was fabulous! and on some days they had a BBQ going...mmmmm We ate there every day!
I did get bitten by sand fleas the first day...not thinking I did put on a scented lotion after my shower in the morning and that may have attracted them..I did however put bug lotion on each day afterwards and no problems. My sister never did get a nibble and she used nothing..I do think I'm a bit sweetie than my sister..haha--just kidding sis.
Activities on and off the Resort/Hotel
We didn't take in any tours..we heard from some guests and they said they were just okay..
We enjoyed the beach party they put on...lots of English songs and they even had a BBQ going for those who could still waddle after going to the buffets!
Other Comments
The animation team tried hard to get people involved in mumerous activities..they did not push it but it was available for those who did...we played darts, sand putting golf, ring toss, aquasize, bingo,snorkelling..they also has tennis courst, bochieball, yoga, along with numerous other activities. The shows in the evening were pretty lame...they sure tried hard but they are not professionals and work hard to do their best..this isn't broadway!
The age group was about 80% 40-60ish...great place to relax..not party central for a lot of young people. We hardly saw any children. The only negative was the staff hardly spoke ANY English..French and Spanish only..Guess we should have learn more Spanish...when in Rome do as the Romans
PS..the staff in the boutiques never smiled and made you feel like you were bothering them....sad..I would have spent more money had they even acknowledged me.
PSS Had a great time...excellent value for our $$$..even our departure tax was included in our package! Go and go with an open mind...enjoy!

March 2009
Arrival: March 9 - 16
We are a couple in our mid-50 and we stayed at the Gran Bahia Principe El Portillo March 9-16. We flew Air Transat from Montreal. Departed on time and left one hour earlier coming back with a direct flight. Everything was perfect. On our way to Samana the plane made a scheduled stop at La Romana and we were able to get off the plane and have a drink at the outside patio at the airport. The check in for the hotel was done in the bus, card key for the room and everything. The bus ride from the airport to the hotel was 90 minutes, a bit long but worth it.
Rooms
We were in building 9, 3rd floor, room 02 (9302) with a nice clean balcony which we used everyday. Never saw an insect on the balcony. The room was beautiful, comfortable with king size bed, clean and big (junior suite). Everything worked perfectly. As for the hot water in the shower, this was the first time in our travels that we had hot showers every evening. We were situated near the entrance of the resort, which we appreciated. Quiet area and had good neighbors. We slept peacefully every night. Never had any noise.
Restaurants and Bars
Even thought the resort has four restaurants a la carte, we ate at the buffet area every evening. Why? Because it was good, tasty and plentiful and you could just show up without having to worry about time. You can eat in the beautiful dining room or at the outside patio, which is quieter, where there are beautiful tables under parasols covered with nice white linen tablecloths and candle lights. You can also have breakfast and lunch on the outside patio.
For lunch, we often ate at the snack bar buffet. They have a huge deck right on the beach overlooking the beautiful ocean views. Real beautiful!
Beach/Pools/Grounds
Attention beach lovers! This area of Samana has beautiful beaches. If you like taking long walks along beautiful beaches then this is the place. WOW!There are two pools. We noticed that most people did not know about the second pool. The main pool is near the beach and is busier. Not a huge pool but a nice pool and mainly used by families with kids. However, the second pool is located at the other end of the resort and his surrounded by block 10, 11 and 12. This is the quiet pool and also has a bar area. Real nice and quiet! This pool was mainly used by adults and never saw kids in this pool. Nice place to the day and have one last drink before heading back to our room.
Activities on and off the Resort/Hotel
The excursions offered on the resort by the travel representatives are expensive. At $100.00 cnd and up per individual, it limits the number of activities you may want to do outside the resort. However, many people purchased their excursions directly from tour operators in Las Terrenas at a lesser cost and yes they have insurance and they will pick you up at the hotel. Las Terrenas is a 10 minute taxi ride, $20 US to/from the resort for up to a total of 7 people in a clean taxi van with air conditioning. We were dropped off at 9:30 AM and the taxi driver came back for us at 12:00 PM at our designated area. The driver asked to be paid only after we returned to the resort.
Note that businesses in Las Terrenas are closed between 12:00 and 4:00 PM and on Sundays.
You can also rent a taxi for a day for up to 7 people. For example, for $120 US you can take a taxi to/from the resort to the town of Samana. And from Samana you can purchase a boat tour on the Bay of Samana directly from tour operators near the pier. Or from the pier you can take a shuttle boat to Cayo Levantado and spend the afternoon on the beautiful public beach. If possible, try to avoid Sundays as the public beach is crowded with the locals on their day off. You will find restaurants, bars and shops.
The resort employees
Honestly, I don't think we ever saw a place that has such a finer group of amazing and dedicated employees. Everyone from the hotel reception to the bartenders, to the ladies cleaning the bathrooms on the grounds and including the animation team. They were incredibly polite and always smiling and working real hard in making sure that you felt welcomed and had a great time. This hotel is very fortunate to have such professional and dedicated people working there.
Weather
The week we were there, every morning was cloudy. However, near 11:00 AM, the clouds would disperse and we were blessed with sunshine and blue skies for the remainder of the day.
Conclusion
This was our first trip to the Samana region and it will not be our last. We spent a beautiful and restful week surrounded by beautiful unspoiled surroundings. The beaches and sceneries are picture postcards. Do not hesitate to take long walks on the beaches – you will not be disappointed. We felt as if we had been dropped off on a deserted tropical island. The food was good, the room was clean and comfortable and the employees, well, they were incredible. We have nothing negative to say. It is a 45 minute bus/taxi ride from El Portillo to the city of Samana. Beautiful tourist town with an incredible beautiful bay. Worth seeing.

March 2009
Arrival
Good
Rooms
Poor Unit 20 was very noisey, construction, road noise and staff parking lot.
Restaurants and Bars
Buffet was average but always busy. be prepared to wait and get in line on some night. Be warned you must wear long pants for supper.
Beach/Pools/Grounds
Large beach but have to get up early to put towels on chairs to get a spot. Very small pool, alway busy. Beautiful grounds, probably because they get a lot of rain.
Activities on and off the Resort/Hotel
Beach staff are lazy, they would rather hit on the young ladies and be cool than do their jobs. Whale watching was fantastic, worth the money. everything is very expensive to to do there, like eat if you want lobster and drink anything other than their local brands(gasoline) $5.00 to "upgrade"
Other Comments
In my opinion the Management at this resort has only one thing in mind and that is to stuff this resort to it's fullest regardless of the outcome. We only had two warms showers in our 7 day stay and the resort was totally waterless for two days, not very pleasent!!!! The staff and managment pretend to want to help but after a couple of days I learned that they actually did not give a hoot. They will tell you whatever it took to make you go away and then totally ignore your concerns.. I have been to the Caribbean 14 times and this I can honestly say is the first time that I wished I could have gone home before my holiday was over, very sad!! Never again to a Gran Bahia or the Dominican!

February 2009
Arrival: Feb 2 Feb 8
The flight on Air Canada was good although $6 for a beer, ouch. On arrival it was nice to walk down the steps and onto the tarmac. We had our luggage in a very timely manner and customs was a breeze except for the seemingly endless forms we had to fill out. The Samana airport is quite nice with a very open concept. I didn't appreciate the guy loading our luggage into the little trailer attached to the bus demanding that I tip him, needless to say I watched him load our luggage and did not reward him for his lack of manners. The ride to the resort was a real eye opener, the mountainous terrain is beautiful although the road (if you can call it that) makes for a long hour and 15 minute trip. I was taken aback at the poverty I witnessed on this journey with families living in "houses" with no hydro the size of a single car garage. The amount of skinny stray dogs and cows on the road was interesting. Arriving at the resort was a relief as there aren't any toilets on the bus (good thing I only had one $6 beer on the plane). Check in was okay but it would of helped if our guy had spoken even a little english. It was a pleasure to learn that because we were with Air Canada we got a free safe key and one extra ala carte.
Rooms:
We were in room 20202 which is your standard room and it was nice. The usual comforts, A/C (only when the sliding door is closed) fan, miny bar etc. We didn't have any problems with the number of towels or getting the bar restocked and our room was always cleaned in a timely manner. Although our travel agent requested an "ocean front view" we couldn't of been further from the water if we tried. Our room backed on the the new construction and driveway for some sort of deliveries. Each morning all too early we were awoken by this huge machine that was driving pillers into the ground and an earth mover with a very loud back up beeper.
Restaurants and Bars:
Thanks god for the 4 specialty restaurants!! For the past 2 years we have gone to the Mayan (Gran Bahia Principe Tulum) and found the buffets wonderful with great variety and quality. This buffet sucked! For the first 4 days the bacon was so raw I felt it was unsafe to eat. The "cook" just tossed handfulls of bacon into the frying pan and lightly cooked the outside pieces then put it out for consumption. The inside 6 or 7 pieces were still raw. The scrambled eggs were almost unrecognizable due to the amount of water in them. The omelette cook was the saving grace although several people asked him to cook their eggs a little longer as well. The fresh juices were very nice and the fruit was to die for. I found the lunch buffet was the best of all with a lot more variety than even the dinner buffet. The open air snack bar was nice but it seemed to have the same choices every day. I personally have no complaints about the food at the specialty restaurants (I had steak 3 of 4 nights) but like another review that I read my wife and I did feel that we were rushed. If we ate at the speed the food was coming out we would of been in and out in less than 30 minutes. The drinks were plentiful and the El Presente cold. My wife drank Banana Dacaries and with a different maker came a different taste, some drinkable and some not. Like other reviews I also recommend taking a large travel mug as the cups are small and horrible for this beautiful islands landfills.
Beach/Pools/Grounds:
My wife and I also agree with the other reviews that the 2 pools are much too small. Why do people "reserve" the pool chairs and then don't show up until noon to use them? The animation team was interesting....I'm not sure if it was their lack of real energy that made them so annoying or if they were just really annoying as a rule, but my vote is for imported professionals. The quiet pool was tucked away from the beach and when we finally found it, it was just that, quiet. Again a very small pool with it's own bar and maybe 25 chairs. I with we'd found it on the first day and not the last.
The beach was breath taking, miles of nothing but palm trees, beautiful sand and colourful waters. Each day we would walk the beach and be totally alone. The snorkeling was great although our weather wasn't the best as it was very windy and wavy which churned up the sand but we did see a great number of fish. At the resort on the beach we found an over abundance of beach chairs and didn't have any problem finding shade (although 4 of 7 days were cloudy, but you can't help the weather and at least it wasn't snow). The grounds were well cared for the there were always works tending to it.
Activities on and off the Resort/Hotel:
Our activities at the resort were confined to the beautiful beach, snorkeling and people watching. We did go on 2 outings, first was the horse back ride to the waterfall which consisted of a 30 minute bus ride to a really nice spot where we were given a "typical" Dominican lunch of chicken, rice, beans and bread which I found really nice. Then we were size matched to our horses and assigned a personal guide that walk/ran beside us for almost the entire 40 minute ride up and back from the waterfall. These guides were really nice people who made sure the horses behaved. The trip through the mountains and foothills was wonderful and definately one of my highlightsl. The waterfall was a welcome and refreshing site but not what I imagined from the pictures. The pool was quite small and the water very turbulant. Only 3 people of 25 went in. At the beginning of the ride a young guy who speaks French,English and German explained to use about the poverty (that I had witnessed first hand already)in the area and asked that if we pleased a tip would be appreciated. At the end of the trip I didn't see one guide with their hands out which I really appreciated. My wife and I both gave our guides $10us which we felt the truly deserved after just walk/running up and down the mountain, as well as help people up and down the very steep steps to actually access the waterfall. I was appauled at a fellow Canadian the boasted at giving $2 and buying her guide a beer.
Other Comments:
Overall good holiday, but we will not be going back there anytime soon.

January 2009
Arrival: Jan 4 - 11, 2009
Air Canada flight down. No delays, cleared customs quickly and then directed to the bus. The drive to the hotel was about 1 1/2 hours through a beautiful mountain terrain. We left Toronto at 8:30 and we in our room by 3:00 p.m.
Rooms:
We were in Villa 2. Excellent location. Close to the beach, restaurants, etc. Clean, spacious, no problems. We requested a 2nd floor, king bed and that's what we got. Because we flew AC the safety deposit box was free. As well, if you take your own laptop they have wireless in the reception area and you don't have to pay for internet connection. Nice to send e-mails home when you want.
Restaurants and Bars:
We tried all 4 al a cartes. Nothing special but just fine. The buffet was good. Always something there. The staff are a little slow at removing the plates but so what...you are on holiday!!!
Beach/Pools/Grounds:
Small pool, not much going on....the beach however is stunning. We have travelled extensively throughout the Caribbean and it was one of the nicest. You can walk for miles on floury golden sand and crystal clear water. There is a reef right off the beach and we saw many fish while snorkeling. We had issues with the sand fleas (numerous bites) but we seemed to be the only ones. No one else we talked to complained. The grounds are beautiful. Well maintained, lush...beats the snow back home
Activities on and off the Resort/Hotel:
We did the El Limon Waterfall tour. My first time on a horse (bucket list). After a very pleasant drive to the ranch we were given a horse then rode through some beautiful but rocky terrain. Climbing down to the falls was a little arduous but we did it. My husband swam while I took pictures and then back up the mountain to get back on the horse. We had a delicious Dominican lunch and were back to the hotel by 12:30, just in time for a drink and siesta. The only issues I had was my screaming thighs for 4 days afterwards but I would do it again in a heartbeat.
Other Comments:
As mentioned we have been to the Dominican numerous times (Punta Cana, La Romana, Puerto Plata, Santo Domingo) and all through Cuba, Mexico and many islands in the Caribbean and found that this hotel was good mainly because of the beach and there is not another hotel for miles unlike Punta Cana. The hotel could be a 5 star if some small issues were looked after but if you want a stunning beach, good food and some R&R this is the place. The resort was just great for what we paid (sell off). If you are looking for those little extra's then you should considering spending considerable more money and go the Levantado or a Sandals!!! We don't typically go to the same place twice but we might make an exception!

January 2009
Arrival: Dec 27 2008-Jan 3 2009
We were a group of 6 and they did not have the name of one of our twosome at the airport however they still allowed us on the bus to the hotel- a porter demanded a tip before putting our luggage on the bus.Check in took quite a while as we felt they really did not have the info on the 3rd registration.
Rooms:
The rooms were all junior suites-we had actually pre-paid extra for one junior suite so although I was pleased that we all got the suites I am ticked that I paid $80 extra to have the one.
Restaurants and Bars:
We went to 3 of the 4 theme restaurants and felt very rushed to order our meal and eat it. Even though we had more waiters in the theme restaurant we felt we had more time to dine at the buffet. The waiters in the theme room did not speak ony more english than anywhere else. The food at the buffet was quite good and we felt there was enough variety- the beach bar which had an all day snack bar was great for lunch- The drinks were plentiful and we did not feel they were watered down too much. the new Year's eve dinner was great with lots of crab, salmon and special food beautifully set up.
Beach/Pools/Grounds:
The beach was great-lots of chairs- and tables we never had any shortage-we did have a problem with sand fleas-sea kayaks were plentiful and we easily could get the catamaran once a day-the beach was quite windy however not enough to stop us from spending the entire day until sunset down there- snorkeling was fun and there was also beach volley ball and soccer available for the children.
Activities on and off the Resort/Hotel:
we took the catamaran tour for the day- It is over priced for what you get.
They take you to 2 spots for snorkeling however these are not very good spots to see anything- some nive corals but not much in the way of fish- there have got to be better spots down there.
Other Comments:
We had a great holiday however it was very typical DR-with most of the staff not speaking any english and not overly friendly or helpful. Tipping was essential. The maid service was excellent-The business with towel cards was just plain silly-I was also surprised to have to pay for a room safe- I have never had to do that at any hotel previously- I fell that they were trying to nickel and dime us with those sorts of things.

January 2009
Arrival: December 20-27, 2008
We were on Air Canada's inaugural flight to Samana. It didn't get off on the right wheel as they didn't have the flight scheduled or there wasn't a plane ready or something? The details were a little fuzzy, however, they did offer us $10 per person at Wolfgang Pucks which we took advantage of. We were delayed by about two and half hours and we were sent through security with HAND WRITTEN boarding passes, that's a first!
I don't know the type of plane, the seating configuration was 3 & 3 and had the personal entertainment system in the head rest in front of you, very comfortable three and a half hour flight. When we landed we were greeted by two fire engines spraying an arc over the plane for their inaugural landing in Samana, another first for us. We exited the plane by both front and rear exits and we were the only plane at the airport, needless to say, we were processed very quickly through customs.
No cerveza at the departing area for the one hour drive to the resort. We met our Conquest rep and we were on our way in due time. Try to arrive in the daytime if given the choice, there are some breathtaking views along the way. Depending on the driver, they'll stop for photos.
Check in took a little while, most of the people on our flight were in the same hotel too. This was a good thing as it was real easy to make friends with familiar faces.
Rooms:
We bought into the Roulette Jr. Suite deal which means we didn't know until we made contact with the Conquest rep. which resort we were at. It could have been El Portillo or Cayacoa. We were at El Portillo, at first we were put into a standard room with a king size bed, I thought that was the junior suite, we went to the front desk to pay for the in-room safe key approximately $40usd for the week, we were informed that they had put us in the wrong room. Well, the real junior suite was even more impressive, room #8201, very large bedroom / living room area and the toilet, shower had there own segregated areas within the bathroom, very clean and no sign of creepy crawlers, bugs or anything else. We are not slobs and didn't invite any bugs either.
The mini-fridge was stocked daily with two beers, two waters and four soft drinks. Just leave a note and a tip if you want more than two beers or any other beverage left on a daily basis. If you arrive to your room without the bellhop, you need to insert one of your room keys into the white wall slot on the inside of your room to activate the power and a/c in the room. The shower had plenty of force behind it and all you had to do is place old towels on the floor to receive new ones.
Our balcony overlooked a utility shed of some kind and the property line where there was some palm trees and lush vegetation. There are no ``Ocean view`` rooms as the resort is set back from the amazing beach. We were approximately a five minute walk to the beach from our room.
Restaurants and Bars:
We did not reserve a la cartes until the next day after arrival and to our disappointment, could only get one of our entitled three reservations and that was at the oriental restaurant. As it turned out, we did not take advantage of the a la carte and we dined exclusively at the one buffet restaurant. The food and variety was o.k. to good, always fresh eggs for omelettes in the morning to theme dinners in the evening. The most important fact, neither one of us had any ill effects from the food or water. I do have to commend the resort on their X-mas eve gala dinner, it was exceptional, we had caviar, crab, traditional turkey was available, they accommodated a table of twelve outside for us, live music, a special X-mas with our new family of friends.
The bars were good, never had to wait too long, there were three bars fairly close to the beach, remember to bring a travel mug, there cups are small and it is a waste of plastic. The drinks are made well, not half alcohol like I have experienced in other all inclusive resorts. They only had El Presdente on draft and local spirits, there drink list was good and we tried a few of them. I enjoyed the Caiperhinjas, a white rum, sugar, lime and some other mix, very good!
Beach/Pools/Grounds:
The beach was incredible! If you are looking to body surf the waves, this is not the place for you. If you want soft golden colour sand, great coral reefs right off the beach, then this is paradise. The snorkelling was excellent, there are still plenty of areas where you can go for a dip and cool off. Never an issue for a beach lounge chair, they had plenty, no need to RESERVE your chair and leave, I hate that. It was fairly windy on most days, but, we preferred that to the pool.
We only spent literally ten minutes in the pool, we just couldn't pull ourselves away from the beach. The pool was a bit cool, and to me, a little small.
The grounds were very clean and well maintained with lots of lush local vegetation.
Activities on and off the Resort/Hotel:
We enjoyed a couple's deep tissue massage on site at the spa (not the one on the beach, that looked a little suspect for our liking) for one hour. $150usd for both of us, a little pricey but enjoyable.
We also went on the Cascade (waterfall) half day excursion, approximately $45usd per person, this was awesome. The drive was about thirty minutes in a unique type of bus, followed by forty minute horseback ride to a shaded rest area for the horses, then, a fifteen minute walk down to the falls, just beautiful. Go for a dip if you like, just remember you have to ride back in wet bathing suit or take a change of shorts. Bring hikers, I went in sandals and had to wear their rubber boots. Your shoes will get dirty. It is a very rocky and rustic trail which crossed the river a few times, but, the trail was beautiful in its own right. We each had our own horse and guide / horse whisperer, these guys walk the whole trip in rubber boots, every day. You can opt not to take a horse, I wouldn't recommend this option, it is pretty hilly terrain and it would wipe you out the rest of the day. I was sore enough from riding the horses, never mind hiking the trail on foot.
I was fortunate to meet a fellow Canadian who knew a thing or two on sailing, Admiral Perry! We were able to take advantage of the catamaran that is available, the shoreline is beautiful and it was a pleasure to see it from out on the water. I went out with Perry on three different occasions.
Enjoyed playing Bocce ball on the beach with Perry and Bob, you can get the bocce set from the animation team where they hand out towels.
The Disco was hit and miss. We had two great nights out of three visits where there disco was hopping pretty well, thanks to Bob and his tequila shots!
Other Comments:
We are an easy going late 30's couple and were looking for a place to catch some sun, relax and re-charge our batteries, we got this and more. The beach is fantastic, we met some new friends and had a great time and didn't get sick. With the new airport, this area will explode with tourism, visit now before it's too late.
Cheers,

December 2008
Nov 29 - Dec 6
Rooms:
Upon arrival, there was no power in our room. It wasn't until we found someone who spoke English were we told that one needs to place your room key card into the white box by the door. Once we got that going, the air conditioning wouldn't work. Again, once finding an English speaking person we found that the balcony door must be closed in order for it to work. The ceiling fan was noisy and had to be turned off during the night so we could sleep. The double beds were hard as rock. We dreaded going to sleep at night because of the poor rest we got. There were four of us in the room, my wife, myself and two children, yet everyday we had to call for towels. They would take away four towels and leave us one. Everyday we left something for the maid and still only one towel and no tub mat or face towels.
Restaurants and Bars:
The buffet is small and the selection is not the greatest. The servers are few and far between. For a 5 star I expect to have my glass filled at all times and not have to go looking to fill it myself. The food variety was of poor quality and all tasted the same. The a la carte restaurants were nothing special but a welcome change from the same old at the buffet.
Beach/Pools/Grounds:
The beach was nice. You could walk down the beach for miles. Be careful of the rocks within the water. Bring your own snorkeling gear as there are many fish varieties close to shore. The pool is nice but small and cool. There are rules posted for guests to follow but not enforced. One rule was young children must wear a swim diaper. We found many young children in the pool with just a bathing suit on or nothing at all, leaving what ever deposit in the pool and the staff just ignored it. Beware....
Activities on and off the Resort/Hotel:
The only quiet spot outside during the day was the beach. If you choose to stay by the pool, the local music gets cranked up by the animation staff with no relief even after asking for it to be turned down. The animation staff is lazy and uninformed. Just to exchange towels seemed to be a chore. The arobic classes they teach are dangerous and useless. They obviously have no training. It would be better if the resort imported some trained instructors to better serve their clients. As for the activity equipment, everything is broken. The 'gym' (if you wnat to call it that)had no air conditioning. All the equipment was broken...treadmill, bike etc... When we used the shuffle board, ping pong and pool table, they were broken also. The only thing we found not broken were the kayaks. When we went to check out the kids club with our 9 & 7 year old boys, the staff was sleeping on the beds while the kids played. Needless to say, we didn't leave them.
Other Comments:
Before the end of our vacation week, we were dying to go home. This has never happened to us before. They rate this resort a 5 star but I seriously beleive it is less than a 4 at best. The ride from the airport is about 1.5 hours.

August 2008
Country: Dominican Republic
Area: Samana
Hotel: Gran Bahia Principe El Portillo
Rating: 4 stars
Meal Plan: A/I
Wholesaler: Conquest Vacations
Airline: CanJet
Date of Visit: July 2008
Background:
I had been wanting to visit the Samana peninsula for quite some time, but it hasn’t always been the easiest spot to get to. Now that there is an international airport serving this area, it has become much easier. Otherwise it is a 4 hour bus ride from Puerto Plata.
I spent two nights at the Cayacoa, and then the rest of the week at the sister resort of El Portillo (see my other review for the Cayacoa).
The Area:
The peninsula is simply gorgeous. I have previously been to Punta Cana and La Romana, but Samana is thus far my favourite spot in the D.R. The scenery is simply beautiful; lush vegetation, rolling hills and mountains, spotless creamy sand beaches and a turquoise ocean all add up to stunning natural beauty. The El Portillo is near the town of Las Terrenas and about 90 minutes from the airport. The beauty of the El Portillo is that there are no other major resorts close by, so it has a very tropical unspoilt feel. I am sure this will not last, as there is lots of construction going on in and around Las Terrenas. The beaches here are quite stunning and seem to go on forever, cove after cove after cove.
The Resort and Clientele:
The resort is quite big. When the Bahia Principe company bought this previously charming 3 star hotel, they have added many more buildings so that this resort is nearly 400 rooms. Some of these new blocks are quite far from the beach and restaurants. The grounds are very well kept however, and quite lovely to look at and walk around in. Everything at this resort was super clean and spotless.
The clientele was made up of mostly European families with young kids. This resort has a kids’ club, hence its popularity. I found that this resort had more, and younger kids than the Cayacoa.
The Room:
While I did book a junior suite, I did not get one at this hotel (I did at the Cayacoa). I didn’t bother complaining because I was very pleased with the room and its location. I was given a room in Villa 2 which is close to the beach, restaurants and lobby.
As in the Cayacoa, I had a king sized bed (very comfy!), lots of cupboard/closet space, balcony, pay safe, small stocked fridge and coffee-maker. The maid provided me with lots of bottled water and I never ran out. Unlike the A/C at the Cayacoa (which was super efficient) the one here was having a difficult time keeping the room cool. At the Cayacoa I would keep the temp at around 25 deg C, while at the El Portillo it was on max and still the room was not very cool. Keeping the door open was not an option as my room faced south, and there was never a breeze to speak of. I guess the older rooms just don’t have the same efficient A/C units as the newer buildings.
Beach(es) and Water:
The beach at the El Portillo is simply beautiful! The sand is ultra soft and creamy colored, and the beach goes on for miles. There are security guards that sit at the ends of the hotel property, and they carry intimidating rifles. Sometimes the guard would make us sign a waiver if we wanted to venture off property, and sometimes they wouldn’t. It is difficult to judge just how dangerous it is to walk along the beach. I just don’t know. I mean, I did, and it was fine, but why the guns?!?
The ocean swimming is wonderful especially at low tide when the water is calm and oh-so-clear you don’t even need goggles to see the fish and coral. The best off-beach snorkelling is away from the hotel grounds; the coral seems to be in better shape. The stuff in front of the hotel (what you see on the hotel pic’s) is all pretty much dead. The ocean water was clean and warm with no sea-weed nor jellies.
Pools/Jacuzzis:
The hotel shows as having several pools, but only one was open. This is the main pool by the beach. I went in only once since it was extremely crowded most of the time. This pool is also very small given the large size of this resort. The pool water was so warm it felt like bathwater. There is also a Jacuzzi pool, but I did not go into that one as it too was always packed.
Food/Drinks:
The food, as in the Cayacoa was very good. I did manage two a la carte suppers; one at the seafood and one at the gourmet. It was nice to have lobster and not have to pay any supplements. While the a la carte’s were fine, I enjoyed the buffet, especially being able to sit outdoors. I also enjoyed eating lunch outdoors at the beach bar/restaurant. The choices here were extensive, unlike the limited menu at the snack bar at the Cayacoa.
As at the Cayacoa, the house wine was horrible! I would think a Spanish hotel chain could do better. The other drinks were fine though. I was happy to see that banana daiquiris were made from actual bananas and not mix.
I think the only complaint I had was that if you wanted a drink, or even ice, after 11:00pm, you had to walk over to the Pueblo Principe to get it. The bars at the hotel all close at 11:00. At the Cayacoa, there was always a bar open, and most floors had ice machines.
The Staff:
As at the Cayacoa, the staff here were wonderful! Everyone was helpful and very friendly. I tried to speak my broken Spanish but most staff’s English was so good it made it difficult for me!
Things to Do:
If you get tired of swimming and relaxing, you can book several excursions thru the hotel. Las Terrenas is only about a 10 minute drive by local bus (guagua) or you can take a cab if you prefer. I took the bus and it was cheap and fun. The hotel’s animation team also organizes daily activities if you are into that. The evening shows are, well, the usual hokey stuff you get at most resorts. Unfortunately they did not bring in local talent which would have been my preference.
Shopping:
Las Terrenas has lots of shops and boutiques as well as supermarkets. You can buy the usual Haitian art and jewellery, rum and mamajuana mix, as well as the usual souvenirs. I found the prices very inexpensive when compared to Mexico or other Caribbean countries.
Climate:
I had a glorious week of hot temperatures and lots of sun! I was lucky that no hurricanes hit even though a few were in the general area.
Insects:
I think I received two or three mosquito bites at dusk one night. The hotel sprays for mozzies and who knows what else, so bugs were definitely not a problem.
In Conclusion:
This hotel was great value and I would highly recommend it, especially for families. This would not be my first choice for a quiet romantic escape however. But if you know what you’re in for, and large busy resorts are your thing, then this would be a great choice.

July 2008
We stayed at the Bahia Principe El Portillo from July 7 -14, 2008. It was a wonderful resort. Everything went very smoothly.
Before our trip, I had emailed the hotel and requested a room in building 1.... When we arrived, we paid the upgrade to a junior suite and we got a suite in building l... the only building with a beachfront view. Some buildings face walls and others are quite far from the beach and pool. The best building for a standard room is building 2.
We flew on Canjet from Toronto. We got a small meal and the flight was very smooth and on time and the staff were friendly.
The journey from the new Samana airport to the hotel is 90 minutes. The bus has no bathrooms, and it does not stop.
The scenery is beautiful and you can see the real country this way. The road is good but at times it does get a bit bumpy and hilly.
The hotel is spotless and the grounds are beautiful.
There is one buffet restaurant with indoor/outdoor seating.
There are 3 a la cartes.... fish, oriental and gourmet. They are very good.
We thought the meals were very good. There is a snack bar on the beach.
The hotel staff were very friendly, always saying "hola" when they passed you.Upon arrival, our mini fridge was not cold and within 1 hour, a man came to attend to it.. and then it was fine.
the bathroom was very modern, the room was big, everything worked, there were no bugs and we could not hear any other guests when we were in our room.
There were alot of kids at the resort but they did not bother us.
The swimming pool was usually crowded and had very warm water. We prefered the sea. It was very calm and clear with very little seaweed.
The hotel beach is quite long and on each side of the hotel you can walk for miles. When you leave the hotel grounds, they require you to sign a waiver, saying that you realize the hotel is not responsible once you leave the property. Also there is a guard on either side of the hotel beach, with a very big gun.
We took the local (guagua) bus into town and had no problems at all.
The hotel is isolated and before a person books this hotel, they should do some research on the area, so they wont be disappointed. The closest town is Las Terrenas which is small but you can walk around and there are some stores. It is not really a tourist town, but a dominican town.
They accept American money.
Our weather was perfect. Very hot with no rain for the entire week.
The only downfall of the hotel was the nightly entertainment. It was not very good. My husband enjoyed the karaoke on the first night as he loves to sign... But we dont go there for the shows.
We go for the relaxation and for the beautiful scenery, and we were not disappointed.
The shows started at l0;00 pm, after the mini disco finished, and ended about ll:00.. Then you could walk 5 minutes to the Pueblo Principe where there was another show... The disco opened from 12:00 until 2:00.
The 90 minute ride back to the airport was just as interesting as the ride on the way in....lots to see out the window.
Once again, Canjet was perfectly on time and the flight was fine.
We had a great time and would recommend the hotel, but you must realize that it is isolated!
If you wish to contact me with any questions, I would be pleased to try to answer your questions or concerns.

March 2008
My wife and I (early 50’s) traveled to Gran Bahia Principe El Portillo from March 3- 10 with my 78 year old mother-in-law. We had read about the Samana area for the last couple of years and were interested in seeing what it was like after trips to Puerto Plata, Punta Cana, Jamaica and Bermuda. Price was right and reviews on this and other sites were good, convincing us to book.
Flight - Went down on the afternoon flight with NoliTours/Skyservice out of Toronto. Flight was full and reasonably on time although the plane into Toronto from Samana that we boarded had arrived a few minutes late. Trip down was about four hours if I remember correctly. Decent flight on an Airbus 320, three seats per side, 30 rows in the plane. We were given a snack of a heated bun with some unknown filling in foil as well as a cookie, water and soft drinks. Bar service was available as well, $5 a drink. We were also given a rum and fruit drink shortly before we landed free of charge. Movie down was Enchanted. All in all, a decent flight. Still not a lot of leg room but I’ve seen worse on Skyservice.
Airport to Hotel - Had to complete a separate immigration all in Spanish form in addition to the one we filled out on the plane when we arrived. There’s one woman yelling out English translations for the form but it’s fairly easy to decipher. Luggage pickup was simple enough and then you go thru another luggage scan. My bag was picked to be opened but after 30 seconds we were on our way to the bus after meeting reps outside. I had read the trip to the resort was quicker at night but it still took us about 90 minutes. Lots of slow downs for potholes and small towns but an interesting ride. I’m used to seeing deer crossing signs up north by Algonquin Park. The cow crossing signs in Samana were different. Be aware there is no washroom on the bus so use the facilities in the airport. Check in was on the bus which saved time. We arrived at the resort around midnight so no welcome show, song or drinks. Beautiful lobby, fairly quick safety deposit box rental done when we arrived ($31 for the week). Found our two rooms and went to the Italian a la carte in the Pueblo Principe area near the resort entrance where they have drinks and late night snacks. Surprisingly good Club sandwich and cold Presidente at 1 am, nice way to start a trip. They have cold cuts out but there is also a separate menu for sandwiches available if you ask.
Rooms - We had two standard rooms in the Villa 15 a one minute walk from the lobby and in the middle of the resort. King bed, balcony, tub with shower in the tub, all the usual amenities. Nice room, no complaints. Lots of hot water for showers or Jacuzzi tubs, lots of bottled water left for you in the fridge along with Brahma canned beer and pop. TV worked but no English sports channel which we’ve had in every other resort. I missed my morning sports fix while my wife was getting ready. The rest of the channels were the usual mix of Spanish and English. How often do you watch television on vacation anyway. There is a mixture of two and three storey villas, beautiful landscaping, palms and multiple other types of trees everywhere.
Beach and Pools - the beach is beautiful. I loved the beach in Punta Cana at the Bahia Principe for the white sand and the chance to walk a long way to see other resorts. The sand at the El Portillo is more golden. The resort beach I would estimate to be 500 meters/yards whatever your choice of measurement is but then you can go for miles in either direction without running into another hotel. Beautiful for walking and felt safe. Occasionally had to sign a waiver from a guard with a gun over his shoulder acknowledging you’re leaving the premises and understand the risks but I never heard of anyone having any problems off site. Palm trees line the beach on and off site. At the west end of the beach where the Los Alos snack bar and water sports are was quite crowded. It’s closer to the pool and bars and more sheltered from the wind than the other end. We usually chose the property line on the east end of the beach. Lots of palapas and chairs available all day at that end with palm tree shade available as well. I loved the snorkeling with all the coral. Lots of different coloured fish, mainly small in size. I found the snorkeling better at the west end of the beach. Water temperature was great and bottom was sandy. No drink service on the beach, not a problem for us. We had a maximum 50 yard walk to get a drink.
It was great beach to watch the kite boarders or whatever you call the guys on what looks like a mini surf board with a huge kite pulling them across the waves. It was very windy most afternoons and down the beach to the west end, there were lots of kite boarders. We walked down the beach to the next point (5-10 minutes) a few times to see them up close and it’s quite amazing. There’s a school for boarders along the road into town so you can see all types of skill levels. Amazing speed, great aerial tricks.
The main pool is a decent size though not large. We didn’t go there too often except to escape the wind in the afternoon a few times. A good number of lounge chairs available, all with pads. It was difficult to get a chair by 11-12 but when I would walk by to go the beach at 8:30-8:45, still lots of available chairs. A fair bit of towel/chair saving but not as bad as other resorts I’ve been to. There are three bars to use from the pools and beach. A pool bar, beach bar and snack bar/bar at Los Alos at the west end of the beach. They ran out of tomato juice a few times which bothered the Bloody Mary people I was with but they easily found other drinks they liked. The Presidente on tap was cold and plentiful all week.
There is a quiet pool near villas 11-12 that is apparently new within the last year. Small pool, maybe 40 lounge chairs, several palapas and seats and tables as well with a bar here. I think the bar closes between 5-6 pm. We liked to go here for a swim and drink at the end of the day to get away from the activities at the main pool. Lots of people loved to participate in those, we tended to go more to the quiet areas.
Food/Restaurants – the buffet restaurant has seating outside on a patio which we used almost every meal. It was warm enough to eat out there at all times which we really enjoyed. The buffet had a good selection for all meals. I loved the fresh fruit available at all meals, also liked the smoothies in the morning. They cook fresh omelets in the morning and pasta at lunch and dinner. They also have a guy carving a roast each night. They had outdoor grilling going on a couple of nights. Dominican lobster on the grill for the Saturday night gala which was great. A great rib roast inside that night as well with mounds of shrimp available. That was the best buffet meal I had during the week. We also went to the Gourmet, Seafood and Oriental a la cartes. I would rank our meals in that order but all were good. We like our red wine and what the restaurants serve wasn’t great initially but we got used to it as the week progressed. My mother in law said it tasted like her home made wine so she was happy. The others liked the white wine at some meals. Champagne was available for all breakfasts, with or without orange juice.
Overall the food was good, certainly never went hungry and always found something we liked. I didn’t think the a la carte meals were as good here as they were at the Bahia in Punta Cana but still very good.
Staff – great staff from the animation, to the servers to the maids. We were away from the room early and came back late so we never actually saw our maid but she did a good job with the room. She left only one towel figure which disappointed my wife but if that’s one of the only complaints, you’ve had a great holiday. Leonardo was our favourite server at meals.
Excursions - we didn’t do any formal trips, just went into town one day. We spent a couple of hours walking around Las Terrenas, and that was about all we needed to see. Interesting to watch the motorcycles and cars not collide which is what you expect to see happen frequently given the driving habits. I saw one guy go by on his motorcycle holding a lamp with shade in one hand with his approximately five year old son on his lap. We heard the El Limon trips and the national park trips were good. Some saw whales in Samana on a trip. We were there to relax and we did a great job of it.
Trip home: We were lucky to get asked by Jean Robert, the Air Transat/Nolitour rep, to go in a smaller van through the mountains for the trip back to the airport. It was daylight and we saw amazing mountain sights and views and a very interesting trip through many small towns. It was a great way to finish the trip, especially after arriving in the dark a week before. Nice duty free store in the airport. Flight home was on time. Lots of people charged extra for their overweight bags coming home. The check in guy tried to say our carry-on luggage was included in the 20 kg limit, even going to the point of weighing one carry on bag but we still stayed within the weight limit anyway. That isn’t the Skyservice policy as far as I know so it would be worth arguing if they tried that and you were overweight.
Final thoughts – We loved the people and the staff we met on this trip. It was good to meet people I had “met” through reading their reviews and comments on Tripadvisor and Debbie’s. Great people with a common interest in having a good time in a beautiful place. We have never returned to the same place in out travels but we would seriously consider returning to the GBP El Portillo. The size of the resort is just right for us, the location is beautiful, everything was great. I don’t know how much longer Samana will remain the quiet area it is now but we will be sure to return before it becomes too developed and loses the charm its isolation provides now. We would recommend this place for anyone, a good mix of ages, nationalities, etc.
If you made it this far, thanks for working your way through this long review.

| Gran Bahia Principe El Portillo | Danny and Kim ~ Ontario Canada |
March 2008
We have just returned from a week at El Portillo (Feb. 11-18/08). This was our second time here (same week as in 2007) and we travelled with a group of six, four adults and two kids, 9 and 13.
Arrival: The afternoon Skyservice flight into Samana was okay. Plane was smaller than we are used to and left an hour late. The whole Samana airport experience was good. It is well organized. When departing there is a new huge Duty Free shop in the terminal as well as a snack bar that has hot dogs, fantastic hand made grilled sandwiches (that may or may not be worth the long wait while one man makes them all), nachos and popcorn as well as pop, chips and gum. Rum is $5 in the duty free shop and they also have lots of souvenirs for not so great prices.
Transportation:
The ride to the resort was quicker than last year. We think this was because it was about midnight and there was less traffic. If you travel Royal Golden (Air Transat Holidays) you will be issued your wristband and you will fill out a registration form on the bus. Room card keys were inside the folder along with tour information. When we arrived at the hotel we were instructed to tag our bags with our name and room number and the bell boys would bring, but since we had the same rooms as last year and knew exactly where to go, we just dragged them with us, then went for a snack at the new Italian restaurant located in the Pueblo Principe. The disco was hopping and we spent a few minutes there.
Rooms: We e-mailed the resort three weeks prior with a request for our previous rooms - ground floor villa close to the beach with adjoining rooms and we got everything but the adjoining. Two beautiful Golden rooms over looking the beach and ocean. Villa #1 - rooms 1105 & 1108. Our rooms were very luxurious and large. 1105 has a king bed and 1108 has two doubles and each room has a couch that can be made up as a bed if requested. We had all the golden inclusions. The beds, pillows, towels, etc. all fairly new. Very clean and no insects.
Note: New Villas #10, 11 and 12 are Royal Golden as well, but are located as far away from the buffet, restaurants, main pool and beach as you can get... a 5 minute walk. There is another pool and bar there, but the water is not as warm, there is less shade and less lounges. It is very quiet though (apart from smalls planes departing the Portillo airport across the road) and my daughter named it - the OPP, the old people's pool.
Food: The food is good. The pasta bar every night was a saviour because there wasn't always something else to choose from with picky eaters. Always lots to choose from, but it does get repetitve after a week. Breakfasts were great. Pancakes, omelettes or eggs cooked to your liking. Bacon and sausage were fabulous. Fresh fruit was plentiful. Lunch is pretty much the same as dinner at the main buffet. Meats, rices, potatoes, pasta, salads, breads, cold cuts and of course many deserts to choose from. Ice cream to choose from as well.
Champagne was available at breakfast and there was always a new drink being served outside the main doors to the buffet.
Also new this year was the availbility of seating outside the main dining room on the terrace. Very nice in the mornings and one night there was a charcoal BBQ grill set up there with a chef cooking beef, chicken and seafood.
Beach Bar & Grill - New this year was the beach bar format - Smaller buffet available there for breakfast and lunch. Everything except fried eggs and omelettes available there from 7 until 10:30 then they open at 1 for lunch (fantastic roasted chicken, rice, beans, fish, shrimp and mussel paella, burgers, hot dogs, french fries, salads, nachos and ice cream and more). Then they close at 4:30... nothing available there after that. The after hours snack bar is located in the Italian restaurant in the Pueblo Principe near the entrance. We didn't try the snack bar except for the night we arrived too late for the buffet service.
A La Cartes restaurants:
Service was great at all the a la cartes for us and we had no problem getting reservations first thing in the morning after we arrived... we did this in the golden clubhouse before the Transat briefing (where they tell everyone to go do this!)
Oriental - good selection. Everything that we tried was good, but would recommend the spring rolls, almond chicken and sweet & sour pork. The fried ice cream was well liked.
Gourmet - Very good food, but 'fine dining' so the portions are small and the dinner takes a while, but just because of the elegance of the dinner. Very properly served and they do take care of you. We enjoyed the 5 pepper beef steak which we ordered without pepper sauce for the kids. Other party members really enjoyed the Lobster salad.
Seafood - we did not eat here, 3 out of 4 of us don't eat seafood, but last year other party members went and said they enjoyed it very much, perhaps even more than the other two.
New this year! Italian restaurant a la carte: we all loved this one. Lasagna better than I have ever tasted and every kind of pasta. Desserts were also very good. Be warned the pizzas are calzones (folded and stuffed pizzas, obviously hand made in the shape of a fish) and huge! Go hungry!
Bars: Service was okay. Drinks varied a bit from bar to bar and the lobby bar could stand to be enlarged, but with a little patience you can get any number of fancy drinks or beer. The beer in the rooms was canned Brahma, and the beer on tap was Presidente. We enjoyed the Banana Mama, Banana Mambo, Tequila Sunrise, Mai Tai, and 'Bahia Principe' drinks the most. The kids liked the Sunrise - no alcohol and the Cool & Nikes from the lobby bar.
Pool bar was great - Hilario and Dominga know how to take care of you especially if you care to tip... they appreciate it and loved the baseball gloves and Dora hats we gave them for their kids.
Beach: Fabulous! Lots of room to swim or snorkel and it is like snorkelling in an aquarium. About 20 different kinds of fish and lots of coral to explore around. If you want just soft sandy bottom, just to the left of the aqua centre is best. A little wavy in the morning, but by 3pm or so, it's calm and very gradual slope out to deeper water. And, the water is warm! Not many shells to look for, but a few to be found. A little ways past the water sports centre are two downed palm trees. They lay over into the water and were lots of fun to hang out near. Kids walked up them and we sat on them... Also this year there is a red sign stating that you are leaving GBP property and that they are no longer responsible for you. You sometimes have to sign out on the sheet that the security guard presents.
Also if you go right along the beach there are two ladies there who offer massages on the beach and hair braiding. My daughter had her chin-length hair completely braided for $30 and 2 banana mama drinks!
Main Pool: It seemed small at first, but once you make yourself comfortable, it's fine. Water is warm and the lounges are plenfitul if you reserve by about 10am. Not as many noisy activities around the pool this year. Water aerobics at 12:30 and dance lessons beside the animation building in the shade at various times throughout the day. Merengue, Bachata and Salsa lessons around 5pm were not to be missed, but there didn't seem to be as much of a chance to take your new knowledge and show off before Showtime.
Animation Team and ShowTime: the team is good. Bocce ball, ping-pong, archery, volleyball, and merengue lessons, mini olympics reallly add to the holiday atmostphere and the animation team really make everything fun. The "ShowTime" is also fun, can be hokey, but you have to take into account they have to make it understandable for guests from around the world, who don't speak just English or Spanish. Sadly there didn't seem to be any mini disco, before each show, where they play merengue music and you can dance with the animation team.
The beach party was different this year as well. No games, just music and we didn't hang out long enough to see the fireworks that we heard from our beds.
New market area: near the main buffet some nights there was a mini market area set up. Everything from paintings, cigars, jewellry and you need to barter with them. Don't go for the first price... the prices are similar to the shops in the Pueblo principe and you can barter here but not at the shops... all the vendors look to be licensed.
Pueblo Prinicipe:
Italian restaurant - previously mentioned is located here... and contains the only after hours food spot on the resort.
Stores: the shops are now open... one with clothes, hats, towels etc, one with more expensive trinkets and cigars, and one with typical souvenirs. Prices of some things are reasonable and others are crazy. There is also a Harrison's jewellery store and a photo shop where you can see the Staff photographer's shots and purchase either pics or a disc with your pics on. You can also book a photo shoot with the photographer and buy packages of the pictures. Good quality but $5 each...
Disco: sign says only over 18 allowed and we didn't test that. The music ranges from typical D.R. merengue to club-dance that we are used to here. Lots of fun if you stay awake long enough! The animation crew is there until about 12:30. It is now apparently a piano bar until midnight, but that is hearsay...
New as well: Medical clinic is now open in the Pueblo principe. We did not need to use it =)
Taxi to Las Terranas: Once again we had Nino Vega. He's fabulous and very punctual. The front desk will call him directly. We had him take us to the Lindo Supermercado (supermarket) at the far end of town and pick us up 15 minutes later - he waited for us there. We bought Brugal Anejo Superior dark rum for $7 a bottle, vanilla for about $1 a bottle and coffee for about $2 a small bag. They also have Corona in bottlesand Bud light. (We take Pesos with us for this store as using US$ last year proved problematic and the staff were not impressed). There is a bank in the plaza if you need it! Then we asked to be let out at the shopping area, leaving all our supermarket loot in the back of his van. It's then a nice stroll down a busy street past lots of reasonably priced shops. There is a little french bakery in the little plaza area on the south side along with "Funky Tranky" Bar. Good cold beer, fairly cheap. Also right there is a little shop called RUNA Artisans - great for beach necklaces and bracelets. Very reasonable! Only $20 return trip with a reasonable tip of course! We also took him some Armour All wipes for his new van! (My sister accidentally left her camera in his van and after having the rep in the Golden clubhouse call him, he returned the camera later that evening when he returned with his other fare.)
Tours: Jeep Safari tour: available Sundays and Thursdays. Having been on previous Jeep Safaris, this one fell short. The guide only spoke when the truck stopped somewhere, unlike other tours that explain things the whole time. Even when asked a question it was sometimes just a nod or a shrug of the shoulders. We went to Playa Rincon - the best part of the tour, beautiful beach with great waves, but sheltered. Good lunch served there. Then on to a small school, boring cigar factory (unless you want cigars) which turned out to be a good chance to play with local kids (we gave away some tennis balls and played catch with one, who, before we left, brought my wife and mother a flower and then to a plantation... a house with a few crops to view. Lots of fruit to try, coffee to sample along with chocolate and their version of hot chocolate. Some cheap cigars and necklaces for sale there...along with coffee, vanilla and mama juana (sp?). The washroom was clean with a flushing toilet!
In summary, this is a fabulous resort. It's lush, elegant and lots of fun! Go and enjoy!

February 2008
We stayed at the resort from feb 4 to the 18th 2008.
Transportation to the resort was 1 hour and 45 min by bus without facilities.
Check in took 1 hour even though there were only 8 couples.
The privilege of using the safe costs a whopping $31 USD a week even with having paid extra for the gold club.
The room was junior suite as per the Gold club specs very nice room, however, the block of rooms was not even on the resort map and the balcony looked out on the back of three other blocks of rooms very disappointing.
The bar fridge was not stocked, the TV did not work, there was a missing light bulb, and broken light socket not a great start, and the bar fridge got stocked when and if someone felt like it, and apparently it was my responsibility to find out why, and I would gladly have done that if I was fluent in spanish.
The staff is more likely to speak french or german as most of the guests speak these languages.
The pool is way undersized for the number of guests they have managed to squeeze on to the property.
There are not enough umbrellas for shade, if you should require shade the only available lounges are in the sun and all others are reserved with towels and other items of ownership.
The beach is stunning and you can walk forever, however, if you want to sit at the beach you better get there early, as the lounges are surrounded and captured by 8AM.
The food was a hit and a miss .
The buffet is a bad layout as there was a lot of congestion and jockeying for position.
We were entitled to 4 a La carte restaurant reservations a week, but after 2 we gave up. I ordered one thing in each that was not available, in the second one we ordered fish and got pork.
The beach restaurant was quieter and the view was beautiful but the selection was limited.
The animation group was OK, but they spent a lot of time entertaining each other.
The bar was good, there was a lively staff, 2 or 3 of t hem spoke some english and one of them sang a lot of Spanish songs which was a treat as it was in short supply.
The grounds were well kept and except for the occasional wafting aroma of raw sewage were enjoyable .
The two Transat Reps could be found in their office in order to sell tours.......apparently their main focus.
This resort is billed as a four and a half star. I would rate it as a three to three and a half on a good day.
As this was our first trip to the Dominican Republic We have no desire to return.

February 2008
We have just returned from a week at El Portillo (Feb. 11-18/08). This was our second time here (same week as in 2007) and we travelled with a group of six, four adults and two kids, 9 and 13.Arrival: The afternoon Skyservice flight into Samana was okay.
Transportation: The ride to the resort was quicker than last year.
We didn't try the snack bar except for the night we arrived too late for the buffet service.A La Cartes restaurants:
Service was great at all the a la cartes for us and we had no problem getting reservations first thing in the morning after we arrived... we did this in the golden clubhouse before the Transat briefing (where they tell everyone to go do this!)
Oriental - good selection. Everything that we tried was good, but would recommend the spring rolls, almond chicken and sweet & sour pork. The fried ice cream was well liked.Gourmet - Very good food, but 'fine dining' so the portions are small and the dinner takes a while, but just because of the elegance of the dinner. Very properly served and they do take care of you. We enjoyed the 5 pepper beef steak which we ordered without pepper sauce for the kids. Other party members really enjoyed the Lobster salad.Seafood - we did not eat here, 3 out of 4 of us don't eat seafood, but last year other party members went and said they enjoyed it very much, perhaps even more than the other two.
Go hungry!Bars: Service was okay. February 2008
This was our sixth time to the Dominican Republic and our first to the Samana area. Our good friends Cathie and Gord went with us. Stayed at the GBP El Portillo from Jan 28th to Feb 4th and was an excellent value for the money. The charter flight was like all the others, always feel my vacation starts once I’m off the plane and unwrapping my legs from behind my head. Customs was quick and we were given directions to the bus upon leaving customs. It was only maybe a third full, air conditioned but had no washroom on it, we knew this in advance so no problem. We took the early flight so as other people said the ninety minute ride was great. Lots of different scenery, very tall hills, sea views, passed through El Limon which was interesting, and onto the resort.
Arriving: Got there and went to the front desk. Didn’t take long to check in. Given our wrist bands and told to come back at 2:30. Went for lunch and a few drinks, came back at the time they said and the room was ready. The web site had said check in wasn’t until 3pm so this was fine.
Room: We"d booked Club Golden through Air Transat and got villa #1 room 1106 right on the beach. It was a junior suite, very similar to the one we had at GBP Punta Cana. In our e mail we’d asked for a king bed and close to the water so were very happy. The bathroom had a whirlpool tub, separate shower, toilet behind frosted glass doors and a nice vanity. The closet had the safe ($31US) per week and worked by a six digit code you entered (numbers of your choice) plus the letter A, The closet also had around sixteen wooden clothes hangers (we bring some wire ones also) and storage for both suitcases if you don’t want to leave them on the bench. Along with the king bed was a sofa and a table with two chairs. The dresser had a twenty inch tv on top, four drawers on the left side and the fridge on the right. It’s stocked every day, left a dollar inside each day for the person. The air worked too well according to my wife and had to keep the ceiling fan on low speed. The room darkening curtains worked well and the air stopped when the patio door was opened. The maid kept it spotless and we tipped her every day. You’re given two cards for the room, one unlocks the door, the other goes in the slot to activate the lights and air. Left that card in all the time.
Restaurants: Overall enjoyed the food, a couple of meals were "different" but that happens. For breakfast we went to both the main buffet Las Dalias and the beach front snack bar Las Olas. The buffet had more selection but we enjoyed the snack bar, eating looking over the ocean. For lunch you had the same two choices, found that most of the time we went to the buffet, but a few times they had a BBQ set up at Las Olas. At the buffet carving station they had ham, lamb, beef etc on different days along with salads, soups, fruits, desserts etc. Thought it was a good selection at lunch for this size of resort. For dinner you had the buffet, and four ala cartes. The theme nights at the buffet were Monday- Spanish, Tuesday-Italian, Wednesday-Carribean, Thursday-Mexican, Friday-Dominican, Saturday- Gala and Sunday was an American theme. The Gala night had prime rib, duck, rabbit, pork tenderloin, smoked salmon, chocolate truffles etc. Would recommend that you don’t book an ala carte on Gala night. For the ala cartes you order your entire meal (appetizers, entrees and dessert) all at the same time and each one gave us a fancy drink at the beginning. The new ala carte, the Italian is up at Pueblo Principe. We had dinner at the Oriental which was a pleasant surprise. We had the spring rolls and sushi, followed by the Duck ala Orange and then the fried ice cream. Liked the food, quality and service. Very nice. We tried El Pescador (seafood) a couple of days later. I had the seafood cocktail followed by the lobster and sea bass kabobs, while my wife had a pineapple starter followed by the steak and shrimp. The steak was cut up into small pieces and reminded her of stewing beef. This was a disappointment for her. For dessert we both had the Creme Brulee, I liked my meal very much. Again nice service. The gourmet restaurant La Orquidea we went to twice as we were given four ala care meals with the Royal Golden package. On the first visit my wife had the Lobster appetizer, the lamb and the sugar dessert while I had the smoked salmon, five peppercorn beef and the pecan pie. I would like to thank everyone from the restaurant who helped roll me out of there at the end of my meal. I loved it. The second visit was as good as the first, this time I had the lamb, the same as my wife. We thought the white wine was good. All the ala cartes we went to had the same hours, 6:30 pm- 9:30 pm. And we did see people turned away for not wearing long pants. The dress code is in the info book in your room plus a sign outside the ala cartes. We never had stomach problems once while we were here. As with any resort there are things which can irritate you. With us it was it was how the buffet was run regarding seating. When we entered the buffet on the majority of occasions the table wasn’t set and it was done in stages. One person would remove the used plates etc and put on a new table cloth and the next would give you the cutlery. Then a third person would bring glasses and if you were lucky they would get you water and wine, but sometimes you had to wait for someone else. Napkins were also hard to get. Every time someone came to your table you would ask for the items you needed, but it didn’t always work. Everything came together eventually but you have to be patient. The wait staff was working very hard, and were pleasant and we were very friendly to them. This didn’t affect our tipping these great people. For breakfast and lunch we just went with the flow but dinner was different. When we were at the GBP in Punta Cana they would ask how many in the party and would escort you to a table which was already set. This would have solved this problem here. The best way to describe this is it’s like an itch you couldn’t scratch. Hopefully the management can make changes in the future, it would also make it easier for the hard working people there,
Bars and Drinks. Enough bars, all a short walk from where you are. Liked the lobby bar drinks the best. It was open from 10am-11pm. A bar menu is available. Some nights they had a waiter with a cart in the lobby bar area going from table to table with a certain drink he’d make for you. One night it was Caesars, the next was Rum Sours. At the buffet entrance they had a fancy drink every night depending on the theme and also champagne some nights. Service at the tables was never a long wait but you can go to the bar and get the drinks yourself if you want. Coffee was also available here from 10am on.Other bars were at the pool 10am-6pm, the beach 10am-6pm , at Las Olas snack bar during the day and at the theater 8pm-11pm. Never made it to the Pueblo Principe late at night, getting too old. Overall we thought the drinks were excellent, and Presidente beer was on tap.
Beach and Pool. Nice golden sand beach, cleaned every day with a reef off shore. You could walk in either direction with a few villas on the beach. Very beautiful, a few vendors but not pushy. No problems with safety, walked during the afternoon, no jewelry on and just a small camera. The water had coral in certain parts with lots of small fish. This resort had the most people snorkeling I"d ever seen. The best swimming area was in front of Las Olas, also had a water sports hut at this end. It offered snorkel gear, sea kayaks, etc. Motorized (banana boat) activities had an extra cost. Lots of different small fish, fed them bread or bananas. The pool was beside the beach with two different depths, the deepest was around five feet. The towel hut was here also. There was also a jacuzzi beside the pool, both these areas were very popular.
The towel game. The resort was full when we were there and some people were putting out towels at 7am. We would go for breakfast, then go to the beach and get a spot. This would be around 9-9:30 am and always got something. We did see people laying on their towels past the water sports hut a few different days and also there were a couple of comments concerning a lack of chairs in the Gold Club comments book concerning a lack of loungers. If you want around the pool get there quite early.
Activities. There were beach aerobics, volleyball, dance lessons etc. There was never any pressure to participate. Very friendly staff. There were also a group of sky divers there during our stay, it was something which was very entertaining. A small airport was close by which they used.
Grounds. They kept this place spotless, always someone cleaning. They even power washed the pathways daily.
Tours. The tour room is around a corner from the check in desk at the front lobby. We booked the half day whale watching tour through the Air Transat rep. We left at 8:30 am and were back by 2pm. The ride from the resort to Samana was around 40 - 45 minutes. We got on a boat which seated six people per row, around fifteen rows deep. It was quite large and was a good size because it was cloudy and the water was choppy. Ended up wearing rain coats and got soaked .We took gravol before leaving, this helped as some people got sick. Ended up seeing around 6-8 whale sightings. The amount you see depends on which side of the boat your on. The other side didn’t see as many. Plus when a whale is seen every one stands up. They broke water but never had one going up into the air and it happened so quick. Never got any photos of the whales but some great photos of open water and the back of peoples heads. This was a tour we’re glad we took. How many times do you get to see whales? If you go take a towel from your room, take gravol before leaving and wear a swim suit under your clothes. Out of all the tours we’ve taken in the Dr this will be the one that stands out.
Washrooms. Public washrooms at Las Olas, the theater, by the buffet restaurant and at the main lobby.
Gold Club. Booked our ala cartes here. Our friends didn’t have the Golden rooms but we booked for all four of us with no problem. The club had three computers for the internet, the one on the right had an English keyboard. The other two didn’t have the @ symbol, you had to hit a couple of keys to get it. There was a comment book here and also a book with menus for the different ala cartes. Found this helpful. Also had different liquors here but never had any. Very helpful people.
Tip. Couldn’t find an ice machine at the villa and no ice bucket in the room. Met a man who was on his second trip here, he brought a thermos for ice to take back to his room. Sounded like a good idea.
Summary. Very nice resort, enjoyed everything about it. Great value for the money. To see a new part of the DR that isn’t as built up and with different scenery made for a relaxing. vacation. Glad we went.

December 2007
Your Arrival
The trip was uneventful. The arrive 3 hours before was overdone I feel by the charter company/rules. 2 hours would have been plenty of time.
Bought some liquor at the Duty Free in Toronto. Next time round, I would buy at the Samana Duty Free for higher quality brands at similar prices.
Rooms
We stayed in the Royal Golden junior suites. One room had two beds. The other a true king bed. Both rooms had a couched area with a pullout bed in a small sitting area. Very nicely decorated, with fridge tv and drawers in one low rise bureau. Note: did not have full length mirror.
Bathrooms did have makeup mirror, hair dryer. Complementary basket of mutliple shampoo's, body gels, razor kits, dental kits, boot shiner, and shower cap. Bathtub jacuzzi jets. Stall shower. Hot water no problem:
cold water was not in good supply making showers difficult. The shower did not have a pressure balance so beware the toilet flushing with your partner in the shower~~!!
Restaurants
The tour purchased included 4 ala carte meals. We only took advantage of two nights there as the themed buffet was great in variety and in tastes offered. The International night is not to be missed and in tip, one should always examine the outdoor patio for often there was a bbq setup for grilled fish and whatever: we missed it too often!!!
The ala carte seafood menu had "Dolphin Fish" on it and that turned me off, even after getting a clarification from Jean Claude the fabulous rep that it was not actually dolphin but rather fish referred to by that name ... whatever!
The oriental ala carte miso soup made my s/o sick. The appetizer 'shrimp chip' was not that tasty, fried indelicately. The sushi platter for two was scrumptious, as was the duck l'orange. The beef chop suey was good as was the chicken dish. The sweet and sour pork was not well received by the person who ordered it and was not sweet nor sour ...
The gourmet restaurant was better, with the beef tenderloin really a steak rather than the expected medallions. The pepper corns made for a tasteful meal, with overcooked onions, and something else of limited nutrition or taste. Could recommend some solid vegetables for such a presentation. Generally speaking to the ala cartes: order your desert at the same time as all the other dishes as otherwise, you will not be given the desert menu. Service here could be improved but it may be a language or training issue.
The staff generally otherwise is very polite and pleasant ensuring with a smile an enjoyable time. We had an oddity occur in that we were celebrating a birthday, and my 'male' name ended up on the cake (complimentary and scrumptious) for my 'female' partner who got the cake. It was made real special by all the staff singing done in spanish and english of the birthday song, with the right person getting the wrong cake. We would not complain for the genuine smiles and joy of the occasion and the mistake made us all happier for it, than willing to be upset over it. Some people may not be that happy about such a mixup but we were on holidays and were a happy bunch.
Bars
The bar service was generally prompt though the language necessity using the standard drinks on the "menu". Not all the staff knew the drinks though. The main bar in the resort had on display liquors not included in the package and these were not well explained as to how they could be made available for $$$. The language gap in our lacking the Spanish to get in or out of situations was apparent. I note that the bar people were not getting tips yet were still joyful at work. I think if you tipped them early in your vacation, your service and your drinks would improve some. The pool bar when tipped got prompt service every time, perhaps in advance of the queue!!!
Beach and Pools
The beach: beautiful, clean, golden to white sand, fine, but not too powdery to dust up. There was swimming areas closer to the scuba centre for distance swimming. Closer to the hotel, the coral reef was in and out with swimming spots. The reef itself was great to snorkel through with abundant fish of many varieties. The beach was protected by a large reef about 50 metres out so no large fish could come in to the beach area, making this a very safe beach. Aside from two dweebs who walked on the coral (I was hoping a sea urchin would get them!!!), most people swam around, walked. The beach walk east and west was great. While our beach was guarded at both ends, the military appear to like to frequent the public mostly deserted upspoiled areas farther down in both directions. In one case we were asked for money by a crippled man who was harmless. We did not feel threatened at any time even when we went to remoter areas down the beach in either direction. We encountered a parachute sea boarder on one trip who had a blast going up and down the waves. This is likely offered closer to the town of Las Terensas, down the beach, and would likely be a blast for the kids if you bring them.
The pool was very refreshing and the lounges very comfortable with their large padding. Not over-crowded for a full resort but likely would require your towel to reserve a good spot around 11 am. Most people hit the beach!! And there were more than enough lounges there.
Grounds
The grounds were well kept. Swept and power washed, with grass planted in most areas, all areas were lush, with tropical plantlife abundant but not overwhelming. There were birds around and some playful dogs, we think licensed locally as they had red collars. They were friendly and somewhat trained to hand signals.
Activities
This is not a resort for lots of action. You make your action though the animation (recreation entertainment) staff make things happen. There were daily beach volleyball games, and ping pong by the pool. The spa centre was fabulous, with a great steam room for two (eucalyptus oil), and a drip shower with a bucket drench, to a warm not hot, whirlpool area. We had a couples massage which was delivered in parallel by two staff, that left us both relaxed and very satisfied.
We took a scuba dive and some pool lessons for some members of our party. The dive was to a site past Las Terensas near Cabrio. I had problems with weights with my request for the poundage not respected and no extra weights on the boat, so my dive was aborted. The water was choppy but the surge very light down below. Two small sharks were spotted and very interesting coral formations, with abundant fish
(parrot) of wonderous colours. The staff was very fair on this dive.
Marco was very patient with the new divers, taking well care of them.
The dive boat lacked a ladder s
o I was disappointed reentering the boat (big guy here). The equipment was newer, clean, and they had all sizes.
The snorkeling gear they provided was clear and unblemished.
Tours
We did not take any tours. We did taxi from the Hotel to Las Terensas for shopping, hiring the cab for an hour for 20 USD. Better prices for gifts and souvenirs there. Coffee 2 lbs for 5 v. 1 lb for 5 at the resort or the airport. There was a patrol there by the Police with short shot guns. Generally a happy go lucky day to town for an hour or so in the morning. The ride was much shorter than expected and we think we could easily walk to the town via the beach though this might not be the smartest course of action. It is a sparsely populated area and hints of bandoleros abound.
Conclusion
We all enjoyed ourselves immensely. The resort facility is great. The improvements that will come in time with service difficulties are training issues. The maid service was great, with twice a day service, including a bed turn down service. I advise to bring one dollar bills and to use them: while the brochure said no tipping was required, having tipped and seen service improvements (subtle), and the smallness of the amounts, to "us", I recommend being generous to receive more than generous service in return. I would go back in a heartbeat, preferring the DR here to Cuban resorts (3) anytime. I am Sandals type of guy and rate this resort below that level (drinks of any kind flow there and the service level/facility level is higher) but it is certainly a very good resort, in an upspoiled area, and a great value.

March 2007
Departure
We departed from Pearson airport in Toronto. Check in was a breeze as the lines were not too long. There was a bit of a delay at security, however, the lines here did not even come close to comparing to the huge line at the Tim Horton's outlet beyond security.
Flight
The flight on Air Transat was uneventful. We were treated to an on-board movie and got to eat a soggy breakfast sandwich from Harvey's. Coffee and tea was served to those on board. I was quite surprised with the amount of legroom in economy class.
Arrival in Samana
We were greeted warmly in Samana to overcast skies with scattered showers and warm humid weather. There were 2 exits on the plane so we deplaned quite quickly through the rear exit door. We breezed through immigration and quickly retrieved our bags. There were no locals grabbing at our bags here at El Catey airport. We carried our own bags a short walk out to the waiting buses. There we were met by our Air Transat rep who steered us towards the right bus.
Bus ride to El Portillo
If you are the type to get ill on bus rides, by all means, bring some medication for motion sickness. The ride to the resort is probably the most scenic I have ever seen. However, driving in the DR is not an exact science. The trip there will be rough and you will be tossed around. Also, you should be aware that there are no facilities on the bus so take care of that detail before you leave. During the bus ride, we were pre-booked by an El Portillo rep as our rooms would not be ready on our arrival. We were issued bracelets which would allow us to eat, drink and have fun at the hotel till our rooms were ready. Rooms were promised for 3pm, but were ready shortly after 2pm.
The Resort
Upon arrival at the resort, we got off the plane and were warmly welcomed to El Portillo with a welcome drink (a Maitai) and by a show put on by the animation staff. We really felt welcome.
One thing that is very much obvious is that this resort is kept immaculately clean. There are workers everywhere cleaning, sweeping and waxing floors, doing landscaping and making sure the resort is always looking it's best. The main building has a spacious lobby. Here you will find the guest services desk as well as 2 internet terminals. Internet was free for Golden Package guests and I took advantage of it on 3 occasions.
Tip : When you get to the hotel, visit guest services right away and reserve your à la carte dinners. That way, you'll have a better chance of getting the times you want. Aialla or Jennifer were always quite helpful at this desk.
If you are travelling with Air Transat, you will have a meeting at some point with your travel Rep. We met with Robert that afternoon. He gave us a list of all the do's and don'ts. You can also book your tours directly through your travel rep.
Our room
We were in room 1104 in Villa 1. This is the villa closest to the beach, the pools and the main building. Our room was immaculately decorated and contained a king size bed. There was a balcony which overlooked the Jacuzzi, the beach and the beach-snack bar. When you arrive in your room, you'll have to place your key in a slot by the door. This will activate the air-conditionning. As a side-note, if you open the patio door, the air-conditionning will stop working. We had a slight issue with the drain in our shower, but eventually Jennifer from guest services was able to get the message to the right person and it was fixed. There is a safe in the room but be warned that it costs 31$ to get a key.
The Beach
The beach has soft golden sand. You can walk for miles on either side of the resort. If you walk 90 minutes west, you`ll arrive in the local town of Las Terrenas. We did not walk there but others who did said they felt very safe. There was a lot of coral in the water, however, it was visible. If you are looking for a place to swim without coral, head west right near the watersports hut. There is a section there where there is no coral. The waves here are not big at all as they are absorbed by the coral reef.
If you plan on snorkelling, you can get equipment from there. We saw plenty of fish and marine life right in front of the resort although Pierre, at the watersports hut suggested going to the points east or west of the resort for the best snorkelling. We stole some bread and some bananas from the buffet and this allowed us to attract all kinds of fish for an up-close and personal experience. There were plenty of loungers on the beach. However, if you wanted a palapas, you had to get to the beach fairly early. There were vendors on the beach although they left you alone if you said you were not interested. Jewellery and gifts were cheaper in Las Terrenas.
The pool and Jacuzzi
The pool was smaller than we expected it to be. However, with this being a smaller resort, this was not a huge issue. The loungers by the pool were the most comfortable at the resort. The Jacuzzi ended up being one of our favourite spots. We ended up there just about everyday. It was always very quiet. Just remember that it is a cold Jacuzzi… not a hot tub.
Animation Staff
The animation staff are a lot of fun. They have a schedule and every day they do different things. Merengue on the beach, aerobics in the pool, ping-pong, bingo, archery… there`s something for everyone. Diego and Fabio seem to be running things most days. The animation staff also seems to take care of much at the night-time activities. We only went 1 night and it was kind of hokey, but they were trying hard.
The Food
The food at the buffet was varied and tasty. We were always able to find something good to eat as we are not at all picky eaters. The ice cream was particularly good. Staff at the buffet worked really hard cleaning tables and keeping your glasses filled. The breakfast buffet was the only place on the resort where you were able to get fresh fruit juice… everything else seems to be juice mix. The breakfast smoothies were fantastic.
We also ate at the 24hr beach and snack bar. The roast chicken was quite good, as were the chicken nuggets.
While there, we got to visit 2 of the à la carte restaurants.
The oriental was our favourite of the two. The spring rolls were fantastic and the sushi contained cooked fish. The deep fried ice-cream was also quite good.
The gourmet restaurant was good as well. Although the beef carpacio was not appreciated by anyone we spoke to.
The bars
Bar service was always quite good. There was very few time spent waiting for service. Our biggest gripe about the bars was the lack of consistency in the drinks. One drink at one bar would be really good and then you would order it at another bar and would not even come close to tasting of looking the same. All bars have blenders but the staff seldom use them. Pina Colada's and banana mama's come from a slushy machine which we really did not expect.
Excursion
We took the 1 day jeep safari (75$ per person) provided by Bavaro Runners Safari Adventure. It was a long bumpy ride, but well worth it to see the Dominican countryside. We visited a typical Dominican home, a rubber factory (very cool) and then had a FANTASTIC lunch. After lunch, we were brought to a local beach where we were able to body surf some waves. The beach here was not very clean… the beach at the resort was much better. Warning. : the tides here are VERY strong. Weak swimmers should not wade into water deeper than their knees. Afterwards, we were brought to the Lulu Waterfall where I was able to swim in the waterfall. Water was a bit cold and I was the only one to go in. Our guide Pedro (spoke English, French and Spanish) and our driver Manuel took good care of us all day, even when our jeep got a flat tire. During this ride, you will see some of the nicest panoramic views you will ever see. Do bring a camera along for the ride.
Staff
The staff is very friendly. You will always be greeted warmly. They do not speak much English, but with pointing and sign language, you will do fine. We tipped some staff but noticed that whether you tipped or not, they were always willing to please.
Nightlife
We found the nightlife to be practically non-existant. Perhaps this is due to the age demographic at the resort which seems to cater to a bit older crowd. There were very few 20 or 30 somethings.
Las Terrenas
We took a cab to Las Terrenas (10$ each way) to do some shopping. Most stores do not open till 10 so don't go too early. Also keep in mind that they close in the afternoon from 1-4. We were able to negotiate at some shops, but those owned by Europeans did not seem to be flexible on price.
Departure
Departure was smooth. Security was quick. Do not pack ANY liquids in your carry-on. Your rum will get confiscated. There is now a small snack bar at the airport where you can get soda and snacks. They will not let you bring your drinks onto the plane.
All told, this was a great resort. I would recommend travelling here now while tourism is still new to Samana. For pictures, visit http://www.flickr.com/photos/gaudreaur/ If you have any questions, feel free to contact me at gaudreaur+DR007@gmail.com

February 2007
Stayed at El Portillo from Jan 28-Feb 4. After reading so many negative reviews we where a little leery about what we had gotten into. We where in an Air Transat Golden Pkg out of Toronto. To add to the efficency of the trip we where issued our all incl bracelets on the bus on our way to the resort. On arrival at the resort there was a bit of a line up at check in as two buses had arrived at the same time. However anyone who wanted to just go and relax and have lunch where able to as they had their bracelets. We had our meeting with our Air Transat rep within an hour of arrival. At this time he told us everyone would receive $200 per person back because certain features of the Golden plan where not available yet.We have visited the Dominican five times over the last fifteen years and this resort is one of the best if not the best.My rating Resort 4.5,Room5,Food4.5Beach5,Staff 4.5 Cleanliness 5
All together a great place for a Holiday.

February 2007
We arrived in El Portillo on Jan 31/07. We flew out of Vancouver and landed in Samana. As of this time there really is not much at this airport.
The bus ride to the resort was fine. We knew that is was to be 1 1/2 hrs long, so it was really no big deal. There was only 5 or 6 couples checking in so there really was not problem. We were in Villa 5 and had no problem with our room.
I think the main thing that might be holding this resort back at this time would be the staff. This is a first time job for a lot of these people, and there english is not that great and most of the bar tenders have problems with the drinks on the menu. But everyone is happy and they do not mind when you help them make you a good drink.
Some people seemed to be having a problem with the a la carte restaurants, most of the time it was not what you expected but all the meals were good. If you did not get enough at the a la carte then you could go to the buffet.
The weather was really hot, the ocean was lots of fun and we had a great trip.
We did go on the jungle tour, which would have been better. If the guide would have spoken to the three people who spoke english, a bit more and not most all the time to the other 12 who spoke french.
The construction that was going on did not bother us. The shopping center and the Club House were not done when we left. For this reason we got $200. back each week. So in total we got $400. back so that was a bonus.
We spent the last 4 days of our 2 weeks at the Cayo Levantado. This was due to over booking at the El Portillo. Now there is only a 1/2 star difference in these places or so the book says. It was like night and day. Very fancy was nice but we had more fun at El Portillo. But is was sure nice to be pampered like that at the end of our trip.
Hope this answers any questions people might be having about going to this resort. You only have as much fun as you want. Remember it is us who make the holiday.

February 2007
We stayed 5 nights at El Portillo and 2 at Cayo Levantado as El Portillo was overbooked so I give you both. If you get the chance to stay at Cayo Levantado do it.
Check-In
El Portillo…Most people had their rooms ready immediately however we had an hour or so to wait. We walked around had a quick bite, some wine then were taken to our room, not a problem. The front counter staff was friendly and helpful. Some of the staff could speak Italian, English... If you did asked for something and they didn’t understand immediately someone who could speak English was there to answer our question.
Cayo Levantado…Domingo was quick to help us check in and told us if we had any problems at all to call him directly. During the first day he check in on us to see how we liked our room when we told him we were there to celebrate our anniversary he sent up a bottle of wine.
Staff
Smiles were plentiful and for the most part their English was better than my Spanish.
Rooms
Our room at El Portillo was sufficient, we had the basic Sunquest suite which we only used to sleep and shower in. It was on the third floor with the wooden cathedral ceiling which made the room seem larger. It was kept clean and the bar fridge was restocked daily. There was one day where the maid came in late in the afternoon, she apologized did a rough clean that day and did not touch her tip. The next day it was immaculate again. We were very satisfied with our room. People we met at El Portillo who had the Transat package were happy to get what they had paid for.
Our room at Cayo Levantado was stunning with its four poster bed and wicker living room furniture in an oversized room in a main floor villa. The bathroom was almost as large as the bedroom with a Jacuzzi tub looking through the bedroom and out over the terrace into the ocean. The terrace was partially covered which gave shelter to a table and two chairs, another outdoor sofa and chair. The bar fridge was stocked. The maids came in twice a day, once in the morning to pick up our towels, make our bed… In the evening while we were out for dinner two maids would arrive pick up our towels, turn down our bed and leave some chocolates and a rose on the bed.
Food
At El Portillo the food was plentiful at the buffet, we never went away hungry. We were quickly seated and served our drinks while we got our food. We only managed to eat at two of the al a cartes as we transferred to the Cayo Levantado five days into our vacation. (We transferred, not because we didn’t like El Portillo but to see another resort.)
The Oriental: I had the curried shrimps, and my husband the chicken. The large shrimps were light on the curry but well prepared I enjoyed them very much. The chicken was not to my husbands taste not to say that you wouldn’t enjoy them. DON”T order the gelle café sake or whatever it was ooooooooo so NASTY lol our table had a good laugh at it and sent it back. JMHO it was like an experiment gone wrong.
The Gourmet: I had the sea bass which was to die for IMO, and my husband the filet mignon, very tasty. Better than some restaurants at home was how he put it.
Both, the red and the white house wines were very sweet. If you wanted a dry wine you had to order it from the Not-Included menu which you had to ask for. Make sure if you are drinking any kind of rum drink that you ask for the Brugal it is a much nicer rum flavor than the Normandy. The flavor is noticeable even in your banana mommas or coco locos.
The Beach Bar was a great place to be…not too many people there and the pollo (chicken) rotisserie was a quick meal accompanied by a Caesar salad. The chicken was always juicy and very well done, one of my husband favorite meals/snacks.
At Cayo Levantado we only managed to eat at the buffets, the one in the main building as well as the beach buffet. Both were very good, again excellent service. Along with the normal buffet selections for lunch they included shrimp, lobster, chicken, pastas…. Drinks here were delivered to you on the beach, by the pool..... The wines were much nicer here as well their liquors and beers are the premium brands.
Beach
El Portillo’s beach was awesome, great for walking. Very tropical, miles of sandy beaches and palm trees, beautiful blue water and a sky that stretches forever. Nice firm sand and clear waters for the snorkelers. The stars in the evening against the black sky were entrancing.
Cayo Levantado had soft coral sand and the water was warmer. Here there is both a private beach for the resort and a public beach.
Conclusion
Worth the money? Absolutely would go back to either resort in a heart beat! We enjoyed both properties, my husband more the El Portillo me the Cayo Levantado.
If you are looking for a complete and organized resort neither of these resorts are there yet. (As of Jan. 27th anyway) If you ever have a complaint at either resort a call or walk to the front desk and it is quickly rectified. They ask you for your suggestions and comments be honest and give it to them. They are moving quickly to get everything smoothed out IMHO I feel they will truly be at their best in the fall/winter of 2007.
I am pleased that I was fortunate enough to have experienced both these hotels in my one week vacation my only regret was that it wasn’t long enough, unlike this review

February 2007
Date - We stayed at the Gran Bahai Principe - El Portillo Jan 9- 16
Skyservice/sunquest - Very disappointed with these companies, for our flight going there was so badly seated, my husband and I were at totally opposite part of the plane, some people were booked 2 people per seat. They seemed to be doing there job amateurishly. Many unhappy customers! I suggest booking your seats in advance.
Airport - as you have already read probably the trip from the airport to the hotel is 1 and a 1/2 hours not 45 min since the road over the mountain is not safe for tour busses. This was particularly disturbing since it was a long day we left Ottawa at 7 am we then landed in Puerto Plata dropped off people and then went on to Samana, by the time we arrived at the hotel it was close to 5pm, a long day.
Hotel - Very beautiful, has 5 star potential but it is a long way from getting there. We stayed in a standard room, it was decent, we had everything we expected plus we had a whirl pool bath which was a pleasant surprise. I believe our rooms we had were a part of the old section, we seemed to have everything but this was not the case of some of the other guests. We saw occupied rooms receiving furniture within the week we were there, one set of couples were even missing the door between their adjoining rooms! Construction was still ongoing when we were there, your woken to construction noise.
The employees - many who work in the hotel this is the first job they have ever had, and they have a while to go to get rid of their laid back mentality. Also some of them do not seem to know what they are doing, I think that Bahai principe in Mexico was so well run they should send some of there staff here to train these people properly. The maid well she did an ok job at best she forgot toilet paper one day , forgot shampoo another, left the floor dirty another, and I don't think this hotel owns face clothes. The front desk forgot to give us a wake up call on 2 separate occasions. Also the front desk does not know how to speak English or French.
Restaurants - 5 restaurants
Buffet - Dinners choices varied were pretty different it was good, lunch pretty much the same, breakfast exactly the same every day. I was happy at the beginning of our stay since the themes for dinner wore good Tues, wed and Sunday but the rest of the week the buffet was ok. at best. I have to warn you I am fussy and most people would find the food fine. I just expect to see stuff like romaine lettuce instead of iceberg lettuce for one. And just more variety night to night. Breakfast - I expect at a 5 * hotel to have fresh juice, like they served at the Bahai principe in Mexico
All 3 a la cart restaurants were kind of slow- I think they have not been at this for very long and they are just learning. Book them the day you arrive otherwise they will only be able to get reservations at 9 pm or something like that. I think what they do is not to overwhelm the staff they stagger the reservations throughout the night without turning over any tables. Fish restaurant - was decent - my recommendation is have the fish and seafood, skip the appetiser and the desert and go to the buffet for dessert. Gourmet - surf and turf -very good, shrimp linguini good, soups good (we liked this restaurant) Oriental - Ok at best, a little bland Snack bar - pathetic& scary!! you have to order your food, I think they just reheat long cold food there. The only safe things I think is perhaps the fries maybe chicken. Very seldom did I see people eat here although the balcony is gorgeous to have a drink on.
Beach and Pool - was nice, beach was the nicest I have ever seen. Great for peaceful long walks. If you walk to the left of the resort you can in 1 1/2 hours walk along the beach all the way to Las Terranas. When we first arrived there was not much wind and the seas were pretty calm snorkelling would have been good then. Later in the week I tried and the surf was stirring up so much sand that I could see nothing in front of me. I did not like this since you could not see the reef until you were almost right on top of it. Actually one lady this happed to her and she was not able to avoid crashing into it and she scraped her leg pretty good.
Kids - We did not travel with any children but I would say they had lots of activities for Kids under 6, the kids this week seemed to be having a blast. Little shows ect.
Night Entertainment - Every couple of nights they hired a guy between 8-10 to play keyboard and sing he was very entertaining. Also between 8-10 they had karaoke in the theatre also enjoyable. The night shows are kind of boring but some people seemed to enjoy them. After 11 or so they had the disco hardly anyone went.
Outings -
El Limon - The view was worth it but I would not do it again. Make sure you are physically fit - my legs were jello for 2 days later. Make sure you wear clothes you do not mind ruining, The red mud is really difficult to get off. Another note this is a very difficult ride up & down the mountain part by horse and part without. The part by horse is so difficult that they have a guide for each person to help you and the horse through this rough terrain. When the outing was done I gave my guide $6 tip, I think she was expecting more. The tour operator said he thought $5 was fair but sometimes people gave them more. Some thing to think about
Deep Sea fishing - I do not suggest it, the boat operator that is parked right at our hotel was so happy to bring us out he did not care that perhaps the seas were to rough. They just want the money, I think they are counting on the passengers to get sick so they can come back in early ( ps 3 of 5 of us go sick) - we only caught 1 small fish. We have fished from Puerto Plata, Punta Cana, and now here we have never been successful. If you want to bring in lots of fish go to cape Canaveral in Florida we have always brought in lots of fish there.
Nancies Fancies - never actually made it here but we met the lady that owns this business in the lobby of the hotel the night before we left. This is one of the nicest people, she seems to know everyone, everything, and she just loves to chat. Ps she is English. Her store is to the right of the hotel right down the road not far, beside the little air port.(you can walk)
Rebate: There was one tour company giving $200 rebates per person because the hotel was not complete yet. This was not my company but I will be looking into getting this rebate.
Overall I enjoyed my time here for 2 reasons, I needed a peaceful time to recharge which my husband and I got. Two, we met so many wonderful people on this holiday, the hotel is a nice size, kind of like a small close community we will miss them all!
Would I come back - upgrade the food, finish renovation (building), get better organized, fix the road in order to make the trip from the airport less than 1 hr and I would definitely go back.

January 2007
Let me say right from the start we had a great time. We are early 50s. We didn’t have our kids with us. We normally stay in 4 stars. Went with Air Transat Jan 7th- 14th. Received $200 each back from Air Transat
Flight: Arrived early. Book row 13 if you want extra leg room.
Samana Airport: Went quickly. We were the only flight arriving. Tip: They only have a couple of pop machines and some chips so take stuff with you when leave hotel for your flight home. Had no problems taking rum bought in town in my carryon.
Bus Ride: Yes it is 90 minutes. Buses are new and in good shape. The road to the hotel is long and windy. Up and down hills. It didn’t seem that long as the scenery is some of the prettiest you will see. If you have ever been to the DR you know how they drive. If you haven’t don’t worry they know what they are doing.
Check In: Take 2 buses full of people and show up at any hotel in Canada and see what would happen. It is slow and they need to come up with a better way. Tip: Sit near the front of the bus and have one go straight to the checkin counter and one go for the drinks. They unload all the bags to one area.
Room: They are beautiful. We had a junior suite(Royal Club) The Junior suites are larger and have a shower and separate bath tub and private toilet area, all done in marble . We started in building 7 but switched to building 1. We had sent an email requesting close to the front because one of us has a bad knee. Tip: Bring a copy of the email with you to show you had made a special request. We had no major problems with our room. Fridge didn’t get very cold so talked to customer service desk and someone looked at it right away. Little things that might bother some people don’t bother us. (First day had 1 large and 2 small water bottles in room. Next 2 days only 2 small. Saw large ones on maid cart. Asked the maid. For the rest of the week we always had 3 large 2 litre bottles in our room.)
Food: Buffet food was good. Service for drinks was always quick. There is always a good selection of different foods. If you like lobsters go to Wed night buffet
The Restaurants - Fish, Oriental and Gourmet. Make your reservations all at one time at the customer service desk. If you don’t get the time you want one day go back the next and try to switch. They seam to only release so many tables for each time every day. The portions are not large. One night my wife’s steak was small so she asked for a bigger one and she got it in a couple of minutes. Service in all was fast and we never had to wait for our next course.
The Oriental: Ask for rice with the main courses. The fried ice cream is good. The portions are not large at this restaurant and it's only 3 courses.
The Fish: Had the deep fried shrimp, squid and fish. Very good
The Gourmet: My wife’s favourite. We ate there twice! She had surf and turf both times. There was no additional charge for lobster. I had the filet and it was very good.
The beach Grill: Ate lunches a couple of days. Food was only ok in my opinion.
Bars: Bar service always was fast. All outdoor bars have self service pop, juice and frozen drink machines. Tip: They do have Diet Pepsi, but they call it Pepsi Light.
Trips: We went on the day long Jeep Safari. It was well worth the money.
You go to a typical DR home. Went to a real market. Not a tourist Market.
Had lunch at rural restaurant and saw a demonstration cock fight. Visited small rubber factory. You go on roads that don’t really look like roads.
The scenery is very beautiful up in the mountains. Took a taxi into Las Terrenas. $10 dollars each way. Find some people to share they are mini vans and you can split the costs. Found Las Terrenas interesting but most things seamed a little expensive.
Entertainment: The staff was always running activities all day long at the pool or the beach. The evening entertainment was not that great. This is one area of the hotel that needs a lot of work to become a 5 star resort.
Beach & Pool:
The water was warm, shallow, sandy and there are coral reefs all along in front of the hotel. We never had a problem finding a spot to sit. The sand is a light gold colour and very soft. The staff is always cleaning and picking up garbage. You can walk into Las Terrenas, about 80 min along the beach. I went for walks every day along the beach and always felt safe.
The beach is unspoiled without hotel after hotel on it.
We went snorkelling and kayaking. The hotel offered windsurfing and sailing as well. The hotel has snorkelling gear to use if you need it.
Shopping: There were some beach vendors, but they weren’t aggressive.
There is a small shop in the hotel. Prices were comparable to Las Terrenas shops, but very limited selection
Yes they are still building some more building and the shops. I think it will be some time before the shops area is open. The staff is still learning english, so they may not always understand but they will always find someone that does. We spent a week at this resort and saw a lot of people that were having a very good time. Forget the small problems and have a good time. This resort is a good 4 star at this time. When all the work gets done and the staff fully trained it has the potential to be a good 5 star.
Would we go back: We like to try a new area every year. But If the price was right we would look at coming back again because this resort will only get better.

January 2007
Hello Everyone,
My wife and I just got back on Saturday January 13 from the GBP El Portillo. We flew out of Toronto on January 6th with Sky Service. The flight was 3.5 hours, and immigration at the new Samana airport was easy as we were the only flight incoming at that time. After you get through immigration you are greeted by the travel rep and directed to the bus. The busses are very comfortable, and the 1.5-hour drive is very scenic, through the mountains with spectacular views of the ocean. Check in took a little while, but as we were leaving I spoke to the tour rep, and she told me that they were working on making it more seamless for the next week.
We had a great time at this resort! The resort is under construction, but interference is minimal. We were in building 19, which is at the back of the resort, and it was great. It was clean, quiet, and very enjoyable. The room had a comfortable King size bed, a Jacuzzi tub, mini-bar (for a $1 and a little note asking for extra cerveca you can get as many as you want), balcony, coffee maker, and satellite TV. Our first night we had a small leak from the ceiling in our bathroom, but we told the front desk, and it was fixed immediately. The front desk staff is more than willing to help!
The food at the resort was good. There was always something for everyone. I won’t get into details, but overall we liked what we had to eat. We ate at all the restaurants, and we never left hungry. We also had no problems ever at the bars. The bar staff was always friendly and wanted to make you happy.
The beach was my favourite part of the resort. The sand is not the white sand of Punta Cana, but rather a golden sand, which is fine, and very comfortable for walking. The water was very beautiful, with waves crashing against the Reefs about 50 meters from shore, leaving the beach calm for the awesome snorkeling. My wife has never snorkeled before, but she has now become an addict. There were so many species of fish in every size, shape, and colour. It was breathtaking!
We also did the Los Haïtises National Park tour. I would recommend it to anyone! It also takes you to Bacardi Island, where you get to spend a couple of hours on the beach!
Overall, I would recommend this resort to anyone who is looking to have a good time in the Dominican Republic, in a place which is sure to be the next big development spot. I have read all the reviews, and forums and was skeptical before we left, but we still had a great time. The people at the resort are learning, and if they know there is a problem they will try their best to fix it. We spoke to people who were at the resort for 2 weeks, and they said that the stuff that was the obvious problems in their first weeks were corrected by the second week. Things were getting better each day. The key thing to remember is “Don’t sweat the petty stuff, and don’t pet the sweaty stuff!”
This is all I can think to write at this time, so if you have any more questions, please feel free to email me at uofgaggie@hotmail.com and I will do my best to answer any of your questions!

January 2007
We stayed at the Bahia Principe El Portillo Dec. 31 - Jan. 6. We have been to the Dominican 10 times before, Puerto Plata and Punta Cana. This trip was the most disappointing and stressing we have ever been on.
To begin with the Samana airport was understaffed. We stood in line for an hour and half to go through customs. Luggage no problem. The bus ride a hour and half at best (not 55 minutes) we were told that right off on the bus by the representative. Check-in at the hotel, another hour in line. Not to get your room but just to get a bracelet. Told to come back for room at 3:00. Came and told to come back in 10 minutes (twice). Finally got room key at 4:00. When we asked about the safety deposit key we were told to come back again. Waited in another lengthy line and finally got the safety deposit box key. We then go to our briefing and our representative asks if everyone got their call from the tour company offering compensation because the hotel complex wasn't finished yet and the services offered were not all available. Most did receive the call but we did not.
Hotel - Very nice and has 5 star potential but I would give a 2.5 for the week we were there. Our room (a junior suite) was very nice. It had everything the brochure said except the phone jack for the room. We were told we would get a room closest to the pool or ocean and paid extra for that. We got a room behind the lobby overlooking the parking lot.
Room Service - Cleaned daily, very basic for the first 5 days. 6th day was great and we even got the turn down service that we were supposed to get all week. Beach towels were supposed to be in the room (according to the upgrade) They were there the day we arrived and they were not delivered again.
Restaurants - There were 4 restaurants available. 3 a-la-cart and one buffet. The food was good at each one. Portions small at the a-la-cart. Service extremely slow at all 4, a-la-cart were the worst. At one point we waited 1 hour between soup and the next course. The restaurants were half empty at each sitting. We were supposed to be guaranteed 4 reservations but were only allowed two The buffet restaurant had trouble keeping up with clearing tables when guests left to make room for more guests. We observed people (and did it ourselves) clear dishes off a table so we could sit after circling the restaurant several times looking for a spot. Towards the end of the week the doors of the buffet were locked and people were let in a couple at a time, as the staff made room for the guests. There was also a 24 hour snack bar on the beach. We only went there once. We placed our order at 2:00 for a hot dog, fries and a club sandwich and finally received at 4:00 after reordering it twice.
Beach and Pool - We really liked them. The pool was basic, not the nicest we have seen but it was adequate. The beach was not the white sand of Punta Cana but a golden sand. Very fine sand and great for long walks on the beach. You can walk for hours if you want to. The grounds staff get a 5 star rating for the work they did keeping them clean. You could do great snorkeling within several feet of the water. The pictures you see in the brochures do not show weed but live coral. Lots of fish. You don't even need a snorkel to see them. Wow! Taking a banana with you makes them come even more.
Bars - Very poor service all week. New Year's Eve they ran out of ice. Pool Bar ran out of pop every day. The beach bar ran out of rum everyday. It even ran out of beer. When they ran out they were not concerned about it and did not get it in for several hours. At points the bartender (only one at each bar) would leave and not come back for half an hour. Water only offered in small glasses on the beach, not bottles. Sand often got in the glasses.
Beach towel service - Two days the beach towels didn't arrive until 3:00. The dryers were down and they had to send them away. If you didn't have the previous days towel to use, you didn't have a towel.
Day Activities - Not posted anywhere. They were sort of following the Christmas schedule, but not always. Selection of activities was poor. Aerobics, Volleyball, darts, ping pong and sometimes some game at the pool later in the day. That was it.
Animation - Nightly entertainment was poor. Untrained staff.
Overall - Has potential of being a 5 star property someday. Right now I would only rate 2-2.5. Service terrible. Understaffed and not trained. We were told that many of them, it was their first job ever. We were disappointed because we paid for a 5-star resort and felt like guinea pigs for their training. 2-2.5 at best for now

5 Star?? Who decides that anyway...?
Just got back from a week in Samana...
The beach was phenonminal! You could lounge on the provided beach chairs within the "human parking lot" or thankfully, you could walk for miles and miles in either direction to find your own remote piece of paradise. White sand, clear turquoise water and coral reefs at every turn. Exceeded our expectations by a wide margin!
The food was average at best. The service during meals, while very friendly, was interrmitent and certainly not "5 star". Service in general at the resort (bars, front desk etc.) was always friendly, never timely, and not "5 star".
We had no expectations of prompt service as is usually the case with most tropical all-inclusive vactions, but we did encounter more than an acceptable amount of inconvience. We paid for a suite and got a standard room , the phone and t.v. didn't work for the week, we had no running water (toilet, shower, sink) for one day and our room wasn't cleaned twice. To book a late checkout took 5 visits to the front desk. All of which are not a big deal and did not take away from our enjoyment of the beach and ocean, but combined with so-so service left us wondering if we would want to come back.
Beach/ocean-5
Service-2
Food-2.5
Resort-3

It was ok. Yes, just ok. Definitely not 5 stars like the Sunquest brochure said.
The brochure said 'newly renovated" what it didn't say was that it was actually still under construction. There was literally mud, tarps, garbage and rats! everywhere. Our room was ok (patio door did not close or lock, this took 4 days to fix. I repeatedly spoke to the front desk and even the guest services rep. Maid service was terrible. We waited 2 days for towels and toilet paper! The resort lost water one afternoon.
Service in the a la carte restaurants was terrible. We actually walked out of the Gourmet restaurant at 9:30 because we still didn't have our meal (8 pm reservation). The pool was the only nice thing.
The airport is not 45 min away like the brochure said. More like
1-1/2 hrs.
Very disappointed.

January 2007
Just back from a fabulous 1 week vacation to Samana, Dominican Republic. We couldn't get two weeks thru the holidays so settled on one. We stayed at the Gran Bahia Principe El Portillo Royal Golden. It is a beautiful resort. As we have stayed at this chain of resorts several times before, both in Punta Cana and the Mayan Rivera, it was like coming home for us. We are a married couple with no kids and in our forties.
Resort: The hotel is smaller than most Gran Bahia Principe Hotels that we have visited, but it has everything you could possibly need or want. Because of it's size, it makes for easy access to front reception, the pool, the lobby bar, the buffet and the beach. No trams needed at this resort. Immaculately clean, beautiful lobby, large buffet with outside seating available, 3 a la cartes, one large pool and one separate Jacuzzi pool area, lobby bar, pool bar and beach bar. Very tropical and plenty of palm trees. We had a welcoming dance by the animation staff and a welcoming drink of champagne and tropical juice. As the resort just opened November 6, 2006 with guests from Spain and Germany, we were the first plane to arrive from Vancouver, Canada to the new Samana airport on December 20th. The hotel was not nearly full. We expect it was so they can get their staff used to their jobs and the routine, and throughout the week, more rooms opened up as more planes arrived from Toronto and Montreal. They are still building more suites and have not yet opened the Pueblo Principe shopping area, just inside the front entrance of the resort. It is scheduled to be competed by January 1, 2007. If it's like the other Bahia Principe resorts we have visited, there will be ample shopping at a good price without having to venture off the resort.
Location: The location is on a endless stretch of beach, light caramel in colour and if you wander far enough west, it becomes almost white. The sand is soft and clean and since this is the only resort built so far, you can walk endlessly in either direction and feel as if you have been dropped off on your own private peninsula. Very impressive. The water is clean and clear and Caribbean turquoise in colour. There is a large coral reef out front, which makes for the best snorkeling we've seen right out of your resort. Endless varieties of fish. The morning sea was a bit murky, so we would recommend snorkeling in the late afternoon, when the sun is shining. Visibility was amazing. You can use the hotel's gear or bring your own. Point of note: snorkeling gear (fins, mask, snorkel), if packed separately does not get included with your weight of 20 kg per person with Air Transat. We did have mosquitoes bitting us at night, not in our room, but some where outside, perhaps while watching the nightly entertainment. We never did see them. Off Skintastic spray didn't seem to work. Others have recommended Deet. It might have been the time of year as we usually travel in February and have not had any problems.
Rooms: Check-in was seamless and we were assigned room 1206 (second floor). We went first to the buffet for dinner, as we arrived at 10:00 p.m. Samana time from Vancouver and the buffet closes at 10:30 p.m. After that, the bell boys escorted us with our luggage to our room. At first we thought we were assigned to villa #12, going by our room number, but it was villa #1 right by the beach. We must say, the Club Golden section is the way to go if you travel with Air Transat Holidays. You get junior-sized suites (as this resort does have regular-size hotel rooms as well), you get the villas closest to the beach and robes and slippers to use in your room.. Villa #1 is closest to the beach, you just have to look out the balcony and there it was, with palm trees and the ocean staring right back at you. Amazing!
Food: The buffet was delicious, always so much to choose from and different each day, ie: vegetables, pasta, seafood, pizza. The salad bar is much the same each day but has a very large selection of toppings. There was always a type of fresh fish, chicken or pork to choose from. Each day they have a different hot meat carved up for you, ie roast chicken, roast pork, ham, and turkey on Dec 24th. The holiday buffet included all the grilled lobster tails you could eat (tail sections cut into three), shrimp sauteed in garlic butter and one of the best chocolate buffet we've seen. The three a la carte restaurants were as follows:
The Gourmet - our favourite. You could order lobster and steak and their mushroom and vine cream soup is delicious. The rich chocolate dessert is also very good.
The Oriental - our next favorite. The sushi was good (comes as a shared plate for two), so we also ordered the chicken egg rolls as an appetizer and shared them as well. The curried shrimp dish was good (I know, curry in an Oriental restaurant is a little different, but it was very good). My husband ordered the beef stir fry and found it too salty, they quickly exchanged it for the shrimp dish. The Oriental restaurant is seating at a dining table. We missed the typical venue where you have a chief chopping everything up and cooking in front of you. The fried ice cream was pretty good with brown sugar and cinnamon.
The Seafood - our least favourite. Slower than the others, seafood chowder was fishy, although the salmon was good. It seems that one kitchen services all, so service can be slow, but I think they are just getting used to the new routine and that will improve in time.
Snack Bar - one of the best views in the resort, looks straight out to the ocean. Some mentioned the service was slow, but we never went for food during the day, we went just for the view. We ordered twice at night and the roast chicken is delicious.
Bar Service: We found you can get Smirnoff vodka, amber Anejo or Carta Dorada rum instead of white rum, you just have to ask. So far, there is no Clamato juice at this resort for you Caesar lovers' (I'm one of them), but with a little coaching I had a mighty fine Bloody Mary mixed up with salted rim and celery stalk. It's the next best thing. I'm going to e-mail the resort and recommend Clamato juice (they now have it at the Bahia Principe Punta Cana and Tulum, Akumal, Coba in Mayan Riviera). Once the bartender knows what you like, he remembers for your next drink order. Be sure to tip. We took lots of US $1.00 bills. We found out from one of the staff that they are not paid for the first month they are in training, so it's a great idea and kindness to tip as their average wage is $6.00 US per day as per our tour representative. Hilaro at the pool bar makes the best Coco Loco we've tasted. We recommend bringing along insulated cups or mugs, they are handy at the beach or pool area.
Entertainment: We have to say, the animation staff was the friendliest we've seen. Perhaps because it's a smaller resort and more intimate, you see them more and they get to know you. Very friendly, not pushy and happy to make you smile, as they are always smiling. The shows were okay, they need more dancing routines and less 'pull the audience out of the crowd' shows. Shows starts at 10 pm and the disco (dancing) is at 11 pm all in the same theatre. Hats off to Sugeily (pronounced Suhaily, Gendry, Albert, Diego and Fabio. They also had a wonderful three member band pay music in the open court yard where tables are set up and you can dance.
Shopping: Once the Pueblo Principe opens ups, I'm sure there will be lots. Right now they have a lobby shop with a limited number of items. We did buy our Brugal amber rum there, as the new Samana Airport does not yet have any services set up there. Speaking of the airport, it is very clean, new and air conditioned! with clean spacious stainless bathrooms stalls. Some ventured into Las Terrenas (a small fishing village) for shopping. It's about a 1 1/2 hour walk down the beach and about a 15 minute taxi cab ride for $20.00 return trip. We shopped on the beach with the licensed vendors who wandered by. Very friendly and not pushy and you were able to barter. I got a beautiful silver ring that flips over, with a pink Coral stone on one side and a turquoise blue Lorimar stone on the other. My husband got a chain made of black shinny lava rock and blue stones which the vendor made longer to fit his neck size at no extra charge. We got both items for $20.00 US cash. Speaking of cash, American Express US travellers cheques are almost impossible to cash. It took several trips to the front desk, a word to Tony, the front desk manager and some help from Ailia in guest services to get the hotel to change a few travellers cheques into US dollars. Remember, you need $20 US cash for each person to pay the airport tax on departure. We recommend you bring cash and visa for shopping and forget the travellers cheques.
Overview: We loved the resort and are anxious to read other reviews from the Gran Bahia Principe Samana and the Gran Bahia Principe Cayo Levantado on the Island. We would definitely go back to Samana. Next trip though will be Bahia Principe Jamaica. Looking forward to reading those reviews as well. Cheers and enjoy your vacation and don't sweat the small stuff. Just remind yourself that you are in the Tropics!
