Arrival and Flight - We had a really early flight out of Toronto, and arrived Saturday morning to Puerta Plata. The flight was ok, though no onflight entertainment as the VCR was not working. Above all everyone was so tired they mostly slept all the way anyways.
Rooms - were adequate. Not too fancy but very clean. We had a couple issues with hot water and a leaky roof and were immediately moved to a larger family room at no extra charge. This was done quickly and efficiently with no hassle whatsoever. We had 2 kids with us so we had a lot of stuff and the front desk moved everything for us.
Restaurants - Fantastic....always something on the buffet to eat, and the a la cartes were really good with our favorite being the Chinese. (Lotus)
Bars - were always courteous and quick to make your drinks, though would bring your own cup as they use the small plastic ones and you are constantly needing refills. just saves you running.
Beach and Pools - AWESOME.....the wave pool was excellent for the kids with lots of chairs to go round. Never had a problem getting a hair. Of course this is starting of their off season so it was not really crowded down there. The beach was gorgeous. a little rough, but just made it more fun. Water is warm and clean and the beach was clean.
Grounds - were really clean and well maintained.
Activities and Entertainment - were great. The kids club was the absolute best. Trevor is amazing with the kids and they always keep them busy with fun stuff to do. Our kids did the high ropes and absolutely loved it. Well worth the extra charge.
Tours - we went on the snorkeling tour through the resort and it was good. A little short for the $30.00 charge you were only in the water for abour 45 minutes but it was a good experience. We went on the jeep safari and bought it from a vendor on the beach. it was abosolutely phenomenal. A real eye opener but a lot of fun too. It ends with an amazing climb up a waterfall. Note to self....next time take a water proof camera because you can't take your digital and they make a video which they try and sell you for $40. A little pricey but i almost wished i had of bought it, as it is hard to describe the actual falls etc.
Departure and Check Out - was quick and easy, though noone in our family wanted to leave ;)
Conclusion - Higly reccommend this resort to families travelling to Puerta Plata. We had a great time and were pleasantly surprised after reading some of the reviews. A trip is what you make of it. if you want a 5 star then you should gor 5 star. but if you just want a fun time and don't need a frilly room. This is the resort to go to.

We stayed at this Resort from March 25 - April 08-08, and we had a wonderful vacation. Our grandchildren had so much fun and lots of activities, that they were busy all the time. We went as a family, with our daughter, son-in-law and 3 grandchildren. The slides were great for our 9 year old especially. The food was very good, the resturants were great, especially the Mexican and Japanese. The chicken at the Mexican was delicious. Our grandson said it was the bestest. Our rooms were clean, and quite large, and service and staff were absolutely wonderful. They couldn't do enough for us. They are wonderful workers. We had a fantastic vacation and would recommend this resort to anyone. The entertainment always had the audience participation, which was great for the kids. They had a ball. Oh by the way, I forgot the great food at the Carribean beach resturant. Service everywhere was excellent.

This was our second trip to Puerto Plata. We always travel with our children so this trip we wanted a resort that catered to them. Our stay was from March 23rd to March 30th. The morning arrival and departure was wonderful. Once we checked in we still had the full day to relax. Our first room was up in building 50, too far from the main building and not the cleanest. The service at the front desk were very helpful and changed us to 40 which was across from the wave pool. Great location.
Our rooms were clean and comfortable. We did have power interruptions in the mid afternoon an a couple of days, but we were out of the room at the beach or pool. Our fridge always had a good supply of water, beer and pop.
Food- Excellent, the four Al-Carts were excellent. The buffet was very clean and always had something for everyone. Coffee with the warm milk was amazing. Kitchen staff very friendly. Pizza everyday by the pool. Kids menus everywhere.
Pools- Very clean. Wave pool was so much fun. Water slides were great.
Beach- Morning waves are better for swimming. My 13 yr old loved riding the waves in the afternoon on the free buggies boards. Water was nice and warm. Two minute walk to market.
Kids Camp- 1st Choice Entertainment did a wonderful job. Very well supervised, clean and lots of fun. My nine year old loved it.
Flight- I have to mention the airlines. We flew with SkyService. The service was first class they feed us breakfast and supper and lots to drink. Excellent!!!!
Overall as a yearly vacationer this was one of our best trips and we will go back to this resort. Sure everyone could find something to complain about, but remember you're travelling to a third world country. Count your blessing!!! Relax and Enjoy. There was always something to do with the help of Chocolate and the other entertainers.

We stayed at the Holiday Village Golden Beach from March 23 - April 6, 2008, six adults and two children.
This hotel is NOT a four star, as advertised.
Our first week was a bit of a bust, but the second was slightly better.
Check-in was quick but no one seemed to be able to tell us where our room was for 40 minutes. We were pretty ticked off to find it was maybe 100 metres from the lobby where we had been sitting, waiting! Two porters for such a large resort just doesn't cut it, especially when they specifically ask for the Royal Suites people and take them to their rooms first, leaving the rest to wait.
For the first four days, we went most of the afternoon with no running water at all (apparently, fixing a pipe took four days...?). When we did have water, it was cold. After complaining at the front desk, whatever was broken must have been fixed because we didn't have a problem with hot water after that.
For some reason, getting facecloths seemed to be a real problem. We had to ask repeatedly and still usually didn't get them.
The beach is FILTHY! Our sandcastles were full of cigarette butts and discarded drinking straws. When we commented on this, we were told it is a "public beach" so they weren't allowed to clean it. It really was disgusting. Very easy to get chairs and palapas, though. If we didn't have small kids, it would have been ok, but with kids, it certainly was not.
BIG waves! Not good for small kids but awesome for boogie boarding and body surfing for adults.
There was obviously some sort of stomach virus going through the resort, as we heard many people complaining of gastrointestinal upset. When we went to see the Signature rep about this, assuming it could possibly be food related, we were told it was likely due to "overindulgence". I highly doubt my 20 month old and four year old "overindulged".
We also noticed a teeny-tiny notice on the Signature board stating that chicken pox was going through the resort. That tiny little notice blended right in with the tour info, which is was in the middle of. It would have been nice if they had tried to bring attention to it, as there were MANY small children at the resort.
The buffet restaurant was good. Never a problem finding something we all liked.
When trying to book the a-la-cartes, do it as soon as possible after you check in, as they fill up fast. The service at the a-la-carte restaurants was spectacular, especially the Caribbean. The food was pretty good.
The bartenders were all fantastic and super friendly at all of the bars. The security guards were all very sweet and the maids were friendly, too.
The Kids' Club is AMAZING. The staff is just awesome with the kids and their "play and learn" sessions were really great. Our son loved going there.
The pools were very well-tended to, as were the grounds. The wave pool was very nice, but hard to get a lounger as it is a very popular spot. Our kids loved the water slides and pirate ship.
Our son took Swim Kids lessons with Lisa and she was fantastic.
This was our third year to Playa Dorada and, aside from the kids' activities, our least favorite hotel so far. Our trip wasn't terrible, but we won't be returning to this resort.

This was my first time to the Dominican Republic and I had an awesome time. We (Me, my son and a friend) stayed at the Holiday Village Golden Beach - Puerto Plata. We arrived on March 30th and departed on April 6th 2008.
Check in - was quick and painless. We arrived at the resort about 11ish so our rooms were not ready when we got there but that was alright, we were able to sit around and grab a drink. It was only about 1/2 an hour before we were able to go to our room.
The Food – We were very impressed with the food. After reading some of the reviews we were a little iffy about the food but were pleasantly surprised. The buffet was amazing. The food was always hot and they had many options. there is no way you could not find something you liked. Every evening they had a pasta station which my friend and my son frequented. The wraps they made were better then any I have had here and made to order. I have to admit not matter what time we got up in the morning we never skipped breakfast as the omelets were to die for. A big thumbs up for the buffet!!
A La Carte Restaurants – they have 4 – Caribbean (Adults only), Oriental, Mexican and Italian. They were all unbelievable – our favorites were the Oriental (had the most amazing food I have ever tasted) and Italian (We went of my son's birthday and they sang him happy birthday and brought him out a cake) Oh, and the food was also amazing here too. You can book your reservations all together that was you will make sure to make it to each of the restaurants– you will have a choice between 6:30pm and 8:30pm.
Hotel Room – The room was clean but the air conditioner made some noise but did keep the room very cool, we even had to turn it down.
The Laundry room on the resort - This was a big disappointment. We had to do laundry while we were there and you pay an arm and a leg to use the washer and dryer, 4 dollars a token and you will need one for the washer and one for the dryer. The first time we a load it worked fine. The second time (2 days later) that was a different story, the washer stopped after filling with water but the staff got that fixed right away then when we went to dry our clothes it took 2 tokens (we used a different dryer) and they clothes were still wet. The staff again came right away but as I tried to explain that there was no heat and that is why the dryer was not working they couldn’t not understand and kept saying there was electricity. I requested another token to use the dryer that I knew worked, they came back with a token and then proceeded to put it in the dryer that was not working. So after 3 tokens in the dryer my clothes were still damp. I would suggest not doing laundry as it is a hit and miss with the dryers and they have a limited supply of tokens.
Entertainment - The staff were great. It rained for 4 days straight while we were there but there was never a dual moment. They keep us going all day. Chocolate and Jonathan were awesome. They are the reason I will book again and again at this resort. The kids loved them! My friend won bingo one night and got $100, she also won the Texas Hold'em another time and won a bottle of Dominican Viagra (rum). I also won at Texas Hold'em twice and won some chocolate.
Check out - This was also very quick and painless. They were very efficient and got everyone through very quickly.
Overall - I would book at this resort again in a minute. We are already making plans to come down again as a big group - 25 of us. The pools were great the bar staff were entertaining and the drinks .... ask for there individual specials .... you will not regret it! The people from the UK were very nice as well. My son now has many friends from there he will never forget.

This was our first time to Dominican and we were very happy with our vacation. My husband and I traveled with our 5 ½ year old boy and 13 month old baby girl. We arrived February 16th and departed February 23rd, 2008.
Check in was quick however they did not recommend a lock for our safety box. I had to go back to the front desk to request one – make sure you save yourself a 2nd trip and request at check in. Other than that – check in and check out was fabulous. All of the front desk staff spoke English unlike what we experienced in Cuba.
Food – we were very happy with the food. The buffet offered a “kid zone” offering ice cream , jello, pizza, French fries, and fun things for kids. There were always lots of different things to eat. My husband loved the omelets’ and my son loved the pancakes (they make in fun shapes for the kids). My only recommendation is for the resort to offer more high chairs – we always had to ‘hunt’ one down.
A La Carte Restaurants – they offer 4 – Caribbean (Adults only), Oriental, Mexican and Italian. They were all wonderful – our favorite was Oriental and Caribbean. Book your reservations as soon as you arrive – you will have a choice between 6:30pm and 8:30pm. If you require a high chair – book this as well.
Soccer School – we did not pre-book because we were not sure if our son was going to participate. We signed up my son on the Tuesday and he loved it (cost $14.00 per session). Marc the coach was excellent with him and he ended up playing another 3 days. The kids play at noon each day and at 4:00pm for $2.00 adult’s play. My husband and I played a few times - very fun.
Nursery – my daughter attended the nursery and they are looked after by British nannies – again all great. You can sign up in advance for 2 hours in the morning (10:30 to 12:30), afternoon (2:30 to 4:30). They even offer babysitting services in the evening in your hotel room ($10.00 per hour). You have to sign up in advance and they cost per session is $15.00. They give you a small telephone in case of emergencies and only call if your little one will not settle down.
Hotel Room – this is the only thing that we were a little disappointed about. The room was very clean and our bed was very comfortable but our air conditioner made A LOT of noise (rattled a lot). We also had a problem with our tub draining as well – this is bothersome when you have small children to bath before supper. We never told the front desk as we did not want the bother of having to move rooms so we just put up with it. I did tell the front desk on our departure. A few days we returned to our room to find no water bottles in our fridge and I called down to the front desk and someone was at our room within 10 minutes – very good service. We booked the family suite which has a separated room for the children. We brought our own play pen because I did not want to take the chance of not having one for my daughter.
All in all we really did enjoy our vacation. The pools, entertainment, and drinks were all good. This resort only caters to Canadians and British which we loved as well. The British are excellent people. We found the waves at the beach to be a little big and difficult for small children to swim but we found going to the beach in the morning a little better. Definitely recommend this resort for parents traveling with children!!!
| Holiday Village Golden Beach | Debbie |
We arrived on Feb 5- Feb 19 2008
This was our second stay at this resort. We returned because we loved the expanse of the grounds and the wonderful atmosphere.
If you have kids it is THE place to be. We did not have kids but would definitely bring our grandbabies here. The Wave Pool is a big hit if the ocean is a bit wavy for the little ones. A nice quiet place to go for a cool down , a snack, and drinks.
The room was sufficient. This is not Canada or Britain so don't expect the Hilton. We loved our room because it was near the golf course. It was quiet and easy access to the beach entrance. If you don't want little bugs in the room don't spill your sweet drinks or bring food into the rooms as that is an attraction for the little critters. Remember you are in the tropics. Its all part of the package.
We had a little problem but it was taken care of as soon as possible.
The Dining room is huge and well kept. Food was fantastic. If you couldn't find something you liked then you are just too picky. The food trays were always replenished and were hot and tasty The waiters and waitresses were fantastic. They would try and teach us a few new spanish phrases each time. They loved you for trying to learn it .
Oscar the OMELETTE MAN. Has the brightest smile and warmest eggs ever!!! After a few trips to his station he remembered what you liked and how you liked your egg. Great Job. The pancake lady .....EXCELLENTE!!!!!She is too cute. Always spent special time making character pancakes for all the kids. Oh yah.. and even for me!!!
The Al a carts were just fine. The Italian has a wonderful ambiance and Jamie is always smiling.
The Lotus. Very nice atmosphere and food was very good. Try the Grooper. ( fish)
was so much fun. They do need some new taped music in there. They must be sick of it too by now.
The Palms Wow, On the Beach at sunset . How pretty can you get? Just so relaxed there.
The Upstairs Lounge... which is NON SMOKING was a great addition to our evening as we enjoyed Steve the Entertainer. 800 till 900 don't miss him. Ask him to sing River of Dreams. by Billy Joel.
The stage entertainment is less than average. They are better than last year but still needs much improvement. The British /Canadian quiz is so lame . The other , Name that tune game is hard to take for an hour. British Bingo....... again. I think darts would be more fun. Or how about musical chairs. haha.....
The staff and grounds people do their jobs with huge smiles. If you attempt to spend a little time with them they really are the best thing there. The Dominican People are very warm and just as interested in us as we are them.
We enjoyed the Dominican Entertainment and Event Crew. The British Crew were very standoffish and never once would stay and talk with us. They seemed to be busy doing only what they are set to do and no more. How ever. If you see Chocolate around you will see what we mean. This young man has what it takes to perform and to excite people into enjoying them selves and feeling good at what ever activity he has coaxed you into. The Brits can sure take notes from this talented and friendly Guy. Thank you Chocolate!!!
If you want to get Certified Diving Make sure you are there for 2 weeks as you have to do a bit of studying. ( ideally take your study part in Canada and then do Your Open water here) Marco at the dive booth where you get towels can set all of that up for you. We did some dives and are very impressed with the Dominican Dive masters and assistance. The equipment is very very good and the dive area in Sousua has something for every stage of diver. The prices are good. Make sure your wet suite etc is included if you take off resort packages. Also. Off resort packages that say they have a boat more than likely it needs repairs that day. We did hear great reports about Northern Coast Diving out of Sousua ,is very highly recommended as well.
The grounds were kept up every hour. Staff were endlessly keeping all the fallen leaves picked up. The gardens were all well pruned and beautiful. The Hotel is a well oiled machine and the staff moves effortlessly doing their jobs.
We took the Outback Jungle Safari the last time and would recommend it to everyone. You get to see the landscapes, visit a Dominican home, see and taste some of the fruits grown there. Try some coffee and coco. See a different beach and swim there. Great Fun. Please bring some school supplies for the School that you stop at on the way back. The teachers can distribute them as needed. Any type of teaching aid would be appreciated as well. Stickers and pencils .
We took a trip to Sousoua and Cabarte. We caught and negotiated a price with the "Bus" Which is a mini van with lots of people in it. We paid 100 peso per person to Cabarete one way. To Sousua it would be about 100 peso for 2. Then the same price back. Unless you want to take a Taxi back. It would be a little bit more but find some others going your way and share the cost.
The one thing we would like to suggest at the Hotel is to have a Weigh Scale for your luggage. Before you get to airport you can avoid a big surpise of overage KG on luggage. I think they charged 10 US per KG over weight.
Our Friends were going to be charged 80.00 and then they were allowed to take out shoes and coat and a book from Carry on then they were only charged 60 US ...... Hmmm but the weight was still going on the plane whether they carried it or it was in the carry on.
Also . to avoid overage if you are bringing Rum home. Spend 4 04 5 dollars more at the Airport and avoid having to pack it and weigh it in luggage. We had an overage on our weight as well. We had scuba fins mask boots snorkel etc in our luggage which should have been in a separate suitcase . We pleaded ignorant and they let us go. Another point on this weight issue. We met a couple there who had 2 kids (who were also allowed 20 kgs each.) Their total families luggage was 54 Kgs under. In the end it must even out. I think that is just one way the airport is trying to make up for the TAX they no longer collect from us on Departure. ( it is now included in our Package from Travel Agent)
All in all. Visiting the Dominican has been very good. We would highly recommend this resort. Especially if you have younger kids. We loved the fact that we did not see one person making a fool of him/herself from drinking too much . I would rather hear a few kids having fun than the other..... Have a Great Holiday... WE did!!!
| Holiday Village Golden Beach | Bill & Karen ~ Vancouver, BC, Canada |
My wife and I just returned from a 2-week stay Feb 5th to 19th, 2008 at the Holiday Village Golden Beach. Fantastic! We have travelled mostly Mexico for the last 15 years, with one trip to Costa Rica, but booked a fairly last minute all-inclusive to this resort.
Arrival – Easy check in, the main buffet restaurant stayed open for an hour or more to allow us delayed newbies to get a proper meal – no rush.
Rooms – While our air conditioning and fridge was not working, we waited until after a meal and all the newbies had checked in and the front desk was quiet, before registering a complaint. We were moved in about one hour to a different room (they even sent someone to check the new room to confirm everything was working before it was assigned to us. Thank you! The layout of the resort with lots of villas instead of one or two high-rise buildings is very preferable.
Restaurants – the main buffet restaurant had a huge selection of foods, was varied daily and was very tasty. The serving staff mostly were pretty good (you do run into a little of the “manana” attitude, but YOU ARE IN A DIFFERENT COUNTRY SO GET OVER IT! It is truly amazing at the amount of whiners and complainers we ran into. They were upset at any little thing (more than just the food) because it was not the same as home…….SO STAY HOME! Again, the food was very good. The 4 a-la-carte restaurants were varied: so-so on the Mexican, pretty good for the beach Caribbean, the Italian and the Japanese. The last two were very nicely decorated and quite surprising.
Bars – Very friendly bar staff at any of the outlets. They would make pretty well any drink, certainly they had their favourite list. I do agree that the house wine was pretty awful (when you see it poured from a bottle, you have to understand that we also watched them fill the bottles from 4-litre plastic jugs.) You could order bottled wines at a reasonable premium ($7-$10) but there was no concerted effort to sell this option. We must give our compliments to Adrian and Carlos in the Activites Pool Bar, and a special compliment to Jonas upstairs in the Aquinox Lounge. The only problem occurred on our last day when a group of 15-or-so ignorant British soccer hooligans brought 3 children upstairs to watch a soccer match on TV. Their total lack of respect towards the security staff, bartenders and Signature Reps proves the deserved title of IGNORANT BLOODY WANKERS! My wife is English, and this was extremely embarrassing to her.
Beach and Pools – Very nice beach area with palapas and recliners. Being on the Atlantic, obviously there wouldn’t be great swimming or snorkelling unless you are in a sheltered area (Sosua) The wind picked up in the afternoon like clockwork and kept the hot sun tolerable (yup like an idiot I got burned.) The pool areas were all kept very clean, with the activities staff always very cheerful! Adults and children were exposed to lots of activities to participate in if you wanted to. Or, veg out at the pools or beach.
Grounds – Very well kept, with lots of visible maintenance staff. BRAVO!
Tours – As we have taken many tours in past years elsewhere, we deliberately did not participate in the Jungle Safari etc. We did go to Ocean World, and found the quality of care given to the marine animals must have been above excellent. The shows were good, but all day is too long.
Conclusion – We were very disappointed in the attitude of the main Signature Rep – Gareth. As I wrote on the survey card on the return flight, it is our opinion that this man SHOULD BE IMMEDIATELY FIRED! He is despised by all the local staff, and was dismissive and rude when we sought evening assistance with a cut toe (required 5 stitches at the clinic.) His distain and obvious attitude toward the Dominican people was the ONLY sour personnel experience. The local staff and the other Signature Reps and the Activities staff were all excellent! The resort has to give Chocolate a big raise; his enthusiasm never stopped! We will go back next February.

Arrival -
The rain greeted us upon our arrival. We were met by a representative from the hotel and shuttled to our resort. Check in was relatively quick and painless.
Rooms -
Very nice rooms. There was some issues with the plumbing. They had had a lot of rain and the sewage holding tanks were full. So of course the poop in the toilet just had nowhere to go. Instead of emptying the tanks, they tried to use a plunger for the first few days. Also, we had a very small leak in the roof. Once the plumbing problem was solved and the rain stopped we had no issues. We staying in the Royal Suites. It was great! My wife spent the evenings in the hammok and our air conditioning worked so well we had to turn it down. No funny smells or bugs to report.
Restaurants -
The buffet was pretty good. Check out the fresh fish and the omelette bar. You will not be disappointed. The Japanese food was incredible! Try the crab cakes folks! I was way too sick the night we went to the Caribean, so I will not even attempt to comment. The Mexican was good. We never did the Italian as we did Japanese twice.
Bars -
We spent a lot of time at the swim up bar at the Royal Suites. My only complaint is that the bartenders only really know how to mix about a dozen drinks. They were extremely friendly though and humored me as I practiced my broken spanish. The Aquanox Lounge is great in the evening. Make sure you check out Steve the lounge singer! Very entertaining. He loves it if you interact with him. The bar on the beach is the only place you will get a decent Pina Colada. Everywhere else they use this disgusting slush stuff that is slimy and horrible.
Beach and Pools -
We walked all the way from the resort into Puerto Plata. I gotta tell you folks, Holiday Village has the cleanest beach around. We walked the other direction too and found the same thing. The pools were nice.
Grounds -
Well kept. Always lots of workers maintaining things. Very impressive.
Activities -
We really didn't participate in any. All our activities were off resort. The activities are very much aimed at the kids. Several other couples were complaining about this.
Tours -
We did the Freestyle Catamaran and the Jungle Safari. Both very much worth the money. The catamaran takes you snorkeling in Sosua. Amazing snorkeling! We did a tour into Puerto Plata. We went to the cable car up the mountain. Very nice. You can get a guide for about $10. Up to you if you take it. Avoid the Amber museum. Waste of time. Fort San Filippe was very cool. One note on the cabs. They will take you into town and around to see the sights for about $50. Sounds like a rip off, but they actually take you somewhere, let you out and wait till your done. Then they take you to the next place. So they are not just taking you the ten minutes into town for $50, they actually stay with you the whole time. Something to consider.
Conclusion -
We had a great time. The Dominican people are amazing and really made the trip for us. We couldn't let Holiday Village completely off the hook considering the problems we had, but all in all we enjoyed the resort. We heard from others that had been to the Dominican several times that this is the best resort they had stayed at.

Arrival -
we arrived on jan 27 our plane was delayed in ottawa for six hours but they gave us a 15.00 lunch certificate not very generious but better than nothing, we arrived at the airport was greated by sunquest staff and put on busses very quickly ,check in was quick.
Rooms -
rooms where nice but smelled a little musty, had a bar fridge and iron and hair dryer and was kept pretty clean
Restaurants -
the main buffet was ok the a la carts where good the italian one was excellent great staff the best food you could ever ask for.the mexican was pretty dull ,but over all the food was ok at this resort
Bars -
the beach bar was the best. the main bar smelt sour all the time.
the drinks where good but mostly just rum drinks. the wine in the restaurants was very good but at the bars it was alful ,definately not the same brand
Beach and Pools -
beach was ok but the water was very rough not good for snorkling or swimming.
Grounds -
where will kept
Activities -
there where lots of things to do in the day time
you could learn to dance and make cocktails and other fun stuff by the main pool and play volly ball and other beach games at the beach
a guy there by the name of chocolate got everyone involved he was a real nice guy who earned his money
Tours -
only went on the caterman trip and it kind of sucked
the weather was bad and couldnt see any fish when we snorkled and almost everyone got sea sick. it was not worth $85 americanConclusion -
i had a fun time ,but it rained almost every day for at least an hour or more.i cant say if i would go back here again. not likely i think the other side of the island is better for the beaches and the weather
| Holiday Village Golden Beach | Marlene ~ Canada |
Arrival -
4 adults and 1 17 year old. Check in was quick and painless. Staff were verry efficient.
Rooms -
Rooms were kept clean but could use a little maintenance. We had a drip in our room each time it rained. When you asked for something for your room they tried very hard to accomodate as quickly as possible.
Restaurants -
Buffet Restuarant was not very good, food was never hot and there was not as much variety as at other 4 star resorts we have stayed at. Breakfast was the best of the day. Tried 3 a la carte's Italian, Oriental and Mexican, these were all okay with the mexican and Italian being the best.
Bars -
Not a drinker but bar staff were quite friendly.
Beach and Pools -
Great Beach, well kept with chairs always being available.
Grounds -
Grounds were kept up very well
Activities -
More suited to families with young children not much for adults or older teens. Entertainment was very repetitive with the games and such and found that the shows started at 10:00 but would have enjoyed more if they had started earlier (ie 9:00 or 9:15)Too much time spent on childrens program.
Tours -
Did the outback safarri and the freestyle catamaran both were excellent. Only conplaint about the catamaran was that it didn't stop at a beach so if you are not a swimmer you were stuck on the boat all day.
Conclusion -
Would return to Puerto Plata again would probably look for a resort with less emphasis on children's activities.

Wish people would be more considerate and pick up after themselves though.Grounds -
Well maintained.Activities -
Lots to do for children and adults!
Entertainment staff work very hard and do a lovely job!
Funny and friendly!Tours -
Very fun and interesting.
Didn't do the rum factory or cigar run but did do Ocean World Adventure Park (do swim with the dolphins there!), and Outback Jungle Safari and that was excellent (boogie boarding at Calabrete Beach was awesome!). Sosua Beach was beautiful.
Do go banana boating, tubing and snorkeling there!
Conclusion - Highly recommend this resort.
The staff were friendly and accomodating. It was clean, well maintained, and the food was excellent. The weather was beautiful too!!
Lots to do for adults and children and we will definitely return.

We stayed at this resort from Dec 8-15,2007 and had a fabulous time!!
The food was great, service was excellent, and the resort was beautiful.
I had read the reviews prior to our departure and got a little nervous
- where did those people stay?? It certainly was not the same resort
that we were at!! We had 2 couples - ages were 45, 52, 72 & 74. The
weather was not the best - we had a hurricane run through on Tuesday
and it rained everyday, but who can determine the weather?? The staff
had the entire resort cleaned up in about 1 1/2 days - you could not
tell that there was a storm that went through. Steve in the lounge has
a wonderful voice, the entertainment team kept everyone busy if you
chose to be, the waiters/waitresses were always there to make sure you
had everything you needed - Veronica in the VIP restaurant is a
sweetheart, "speedy ganzalis" will take care of you in the Italian
restaurant, and make sure you have a " Raphael Special" at the main
bar- they are really yummy!!!
If you are an adult only group, then it is a good idea to upgrade to
the Royal Suites ( if you wait till you arrive, it will cost less to
upgrade than if you do it prior to arrival). Linda on the beach will
take care of all of your hair braiding/manicure/pedicure, but make
sure you get a price PRIOR to her doing any work on you. We will
definatley stay here again - hopefully have better weather- but on a
whole, this is a great resort that has gotten way too many bad reviews!!
Happy Traveling!!

We were there as a couple in our mid 40's.
On arrival we were registered very quickly and met with smiles and patience as it was 10pm at night and we were very tired. Everything was explained very quickly and thourghly to us when we were registering.
Our room
We were registered in the royal suites. It was the master deluxe suite. I cannot say enough at how well the room looked when we arrived and the cleanliness of it was fabulous.
Plenty of towels at all times as well as the coffee maker that was always restocked daily with supplies for the next morning.
The resort itself is very large at a first impression and took awhile to find everything. It was kept very clean and no matter what time of day there was always someone cleaning somewhere. The grounds are well kept.
We had excess to the adult only pool but did use the other pools as well. As a couple going there without children I recomend to other couples going there to stay in the royal suites as when you tire of being around children you can use the adult only pool. The activity pool was very good but the wave pool only had waves 5 times a day which was very disappointing. The water slides were very good though.
Entertainment was good as well and the activities were very well organized as well. The entertainers though were british as well.
We went to all of the a la carte restarants which were Mexican, carribean, italian and oriental and found the food very good and the restaurant staff was always smiling and attentive to anything you may require throughout your meal. The buffet restaurant was good but very repetious in the food.
I did find that unless you were from the UK don't bother getting involved in the little quiz games because you can't do them because they are british oriented.
Overall we had a wonderful time and would go again. I do realize this is the prime time for the british to travel there and that Canadians will travel down south during the winter months so yes we were the minority but I found the staff and other guests all very friendly.

We stayed here as a family of 2 adults and 2 children from 6th – 20th August 2007.The children are aged 13 and 10.
On arrival
On arrival we were met with a lovely refreshing drink and our cases were quickly taken to our rooms. Check in took 10 minutes in total.
The property on first view.
The overall feeling of the property on arrival is the scale of it we felt we needed to use the map in reception a fair bit to begin with.
The upside of a property so big is that you feel that there is plenty of space and not until the evening do you realise how many guests are actually on site.
Our room
We stayed in room 552 which faces on to the golf course and the trees where the woodpeckers live .Our room was spacious enough for all of us and was a standard room .Others we met there had the rooms with kid’s dens and felt that storage had been sacrificed a little for this.
All the furniture in the rooms is dark wood so unfortunately to be able to make the room light enough every light had to be on. The walkway between the room and bathroom is unlit so to see into the wardrobes you have to open the bathroom door and use that light. The rooms are serviced daily and linen and towels changed 3 times a week. Drinks restocked daily in mini fridge in room. We had no issue with our room it was always cleaned to a very high standard.
The pools
If you are not staying in the royal suites there are 2 pools you can use the wave pool or the activity pool.
The wave pool has people reserving sun beds from around 7am despite the book you are given regarding facilities saying this is monitored and frowned upon.
As you can imagine it attracts more children I thought the surface was slippery and saw a couple of quite bad falls taken whilst there.
The activity pool is better we thought lots going on but no pressure to join in it has a little paddle moat for feet or just sitting and reading in .The pool is not so big and is roped off for various things like kids club activities but only for sections of the day we thought the balance was right .Here people take sun beds as they need them not several hours in advance. There is a towel hut so no need to pack your own if you are tight on baggage.
Kids clubs
Well what can I say my kids loved the clubs they used wavelength and tried lots of new things .There are 3 or 4 sessions a day including one that runs from 8.30 – 10.30pm.
The in2action team work tirelessly andy and chris my kids are missing you .There is always something different happening 3 times a week that twilight session charges a fee but this is always for sweets and treats for your child at a price of 5 dollars, if you go in the shop and see the price of sweets you will soon see this is a bargain although we still heard many people moaning about it. In addition there is a cinema on site that shows 2 films daily one is always a children’s film.
Food facilities
Buffet Area.
The topaz restaurant is the main buffet area for the hotel .It has a good variety of food including areas where food is made up as you wait this applies to all sittings. The downside is that it is mozzie central you soon learn that they prefer the dark areas and to sit with your legs in the light areas. If the place was busy we sometimes struggled to find a place set for us to use but in all it was fine and there was always good choice for all of us.
The snack bar by the wave pool.
Check your burgers the 2 times we ate there we sent food back to be cooked our burgers were nearly mooing they were so raw.
In addition I ordered a salad which had extra ingredients- caterpillars which I almost ate!!!!!
The palms by day
This is the beach restaurant the food is slow to come but is far superior in quality, content, choice and view it is 2 minute walk down the path. The place is always clean and we never went back bitten. .Children can go in by day also.
A la carte
We ate in the Mexican the oriental and the Italian they were all fantastic clean spot on for authenticity and ambience. We didn’t try the palms at night as it is adult only so wasn’t possible.
Entertainment
It would be fair to say by day the entertainment is good the team are very organised but it would have been nice to see more Dominican entertainers as last year we stayed in a place almost exclusively Dominican and it made our holiday .Special mentions for Jonathan and also Marcus is great he always has lots of new things on the go circus skills etc Hope those card skills are working ok if you are reading this Marcus.
Night time entertainment
I was extremely disappointed with the night time entertainment bingo name that tune you could set your watch by it. The shows were average at best it is a shame as it lets down the whole thing. Some of the entertainment team are very up themselves to say the least others looked miserable like they would rather be anywhere else. The entertainment area is the main place we were bitten in 2 weeks we saw it being washed down once we were nearly always last to leave and the chairs had been reset for next day without the floor being washed down.
The beach party was excellent though the best night we had.
The aquanox bar
This bar is 24 hours and adults only it shows some premiership football games and is a great place to chill out. The singer in there is amazing (he will like me saying that but he does have a good voice).
The main bar at activity pool
Wow what can I say these guys do they ever stop smiling they make great cocktails know your order in advance after a couple of days. The area around the bar is very low on wasp activity – a big plus!! Every few nights they would set the bar on fire with 151 rum I have never seen anything like it but it is a show in itself perhaps the entertainment team could take a few lessons.
The reps
First choice reps were a visible presence at all times and were always checking that everything was going well with your holiday.
The beach
The sea is a little rough and unsuitable for weak swimmers in my opinion as it shelves off quite steeply. The beach itself is wonderful I was here last year and it is a big difference. There are always lots of sun beds to be had and the shade is good here too. It is a short walk through the property it takes 2 minutes maximum.
Overall impressions
Although it is advertised as a 4 star we think it is a 3 going on 3.5 at best, many areas look like they need a good clean in particular the main stage area and the sunbathing areas where the pools are. The entertainment issue is a big thing as are small things like the room lighting. Undercooked food and badly prepared food need to be looked at. It has potential to be a really good holiday village but we felt to the greater part that the main thing missing from the Dominican Republic holiday village was the Dominican Republic. If you took away the palm trees and the matted roof tops you could have been anywhere .

HOLIDAY VILLAGE GOLDEN BEACH: FYI THIS IS NOT A 4*....I'LL GIVE IT A 3*
WARNING IF YOU'RE NOT FROM UNITED KINGDOM THEN DON'T GO BECAUSE YOU WILL BE SHONE APON!!! I have been in travel for 6yrs; I have traveled to many places and have stayed at all types of hotel ratings. My sister and I decided to take the kids away for their first vacation, and seeing as we have been to Puerto Plata many times, and in the playa dorada complex we decided to go there with the kids. Our flight down to begin with was good. Also on the way home, we flew with Sky Service. The only issue with them was my sisters stroller was broke and also the strollers were not provided to you at the exit from plane you had to go all the way down to baggage claim, and with a 1 yr old and a 20mth old it can be quite tricky, but on the return they did have them right at the exit from the plane. Ok so back to my review of the hotel. Before going I read mainly bad reviews on the hotel, but I've never been one to base my travel choice on reviews, but I will tell you for the first time ever with all my traveling, this time I wish I did!!!!!! Hotel: Property is a 4 star, very nice property. All bungalows which I like, great stretch of beach, great landscaping, pools were great, especially the family one with slides. Property was always clean, but my only issue would be with the rooms, yes they were very nice and well kept, but the air circulation or air conditioner did not work that great and our clothes were damp all week and our room was extremely sticky, and did we ever have an issue with the ants, I mean I can understand seeing ants, but when your showering or going to brush your teeth or use toilet paper and they are covered in ants it's a problem for me. The hotel is very slippery, the rooms and the swimming area. So if you are considering traveling here for some odd reason, and have children make sure to bring them swimming shoes Service: the service was good. The bar tenders, waiting staff, cleaning staff, were always smiling and willing to help even if there English was not that great. The only issue was the waiting game for the highchairs and with 2 babies well they can only wait so much. But other then that the staff that was from Dominican was great. Now as for the service from the activity group, well they were all from United Kingdom, and we found them to be very stuck up. My sister and I were never greeted by a smile from them, never asked to join in any games, never provided with information that the entire hotel seemed to know, and we were at the pool area everyday. Also be prepared to have to pay for things, such as pool tables, any local calls you wish to make, kids club, things that should be told to you before booking. Room: Room was clean and was done daily. We were told by Signature that the room would consist of 2 queen beds, and of course upon our arrival we were given one queen bed with a pull out couch. We did speak to the Signature rep and she was great. She switched us rooms as there was no way we could fit 2 playpens, and all of our things including baby things in a room with a pullout. The only down fall of rooms was the A/C barely worked making room very damp and tons of ants as well as low lighting, which was fixed right away, they changed the light bulbs and added another lamp. Food: the food in the main buffet was very disappointing the first 2 nights, but they started to become a lot better, and the breakfast buffet was great if you eat breakfast. The Mexican restaurant was great, service and food was amazing. But my only concern with this is being a family resort they should warn you in advance that the restaurants are adults only so if you have children you may reconsider this hotel. We also went to the Italian and it was good as well. They do have a beach bar but it's for adults only, which is STUPID because you are paying this much money and you are not allowed to eat at the beach DUMB. I never remember going to a resort and having to line up for drinks! The resort is extremely under staffed. Babysitting services: EXTREMELY BAD. Now as for the standards well they were ok, but be prepared to have $15usd an hour per child if you choose to go out only until 11pm. And if you wish to go to the restaurants and you are traveling with children, well you're going to have to use a sitter, because they do not allow children in any of the el a carte restaurants except the Mexican one. The day nursery is $20usd for 2hrs! The evening babysitting is a joke. No one is going to go out until 11pm, and I sure can not afford $40usd a night when wanting to eat at the restaurants. Entertainment: BORING!!! The entertainment staff was boring! Never did I think I would be traveling to the Dominican Republic and seeing English entertainment, because if that was the case I would have gone there. They had no sense of games; it was the same games every night, bingo and name this song. They had a magic show as well as dancing, which were done by the locals and that was amazing. But never did the entertainment staff smile at us or say HI never did I see them getting people involved to play games, im use to going to a resort that is staffed by the locals, that are full of energy and excitement, that interacted with you and your children if you are traveling as a family, never did we get that, the staff just blended in with the tourists. BUT I WILL SAY THE SERVING STAFF WHICH WAS ALL LOCALS WERE GREAT EVERYONE SMILED SAID HI SPOKE WITH THE BABIES HELPED US WHEN THEY WERE CRYING OR GETTING INPATIENT! WAY TO GO!!! Disco: HA that was a joke! I would not call It a disco I would call it a karaoke bar which was terrible, They do have another disco on site by enterance of property, which is also available to the public so we found it great! Mostly locals but it was still great to watch them dance, only thing that sucked was having to pay for the drinks. The whole property is from United Kingdom, so were talking, England, Scotland etc. And I'm also including the staff (excluding the serving staff) and my sister and I were the only black people there that week, so we got stares and eye rolling, everyone there including the entertainment crew thought we were from Dominican so it was pure rudeness all week, you could tell they felt like why are there locals staying here? For example, I went into the washroom to change my daughters diaper and as I was looking for an open stall a lady walked in behind me and said "HOLA, ARE THEY ALL BEING USED?" as I opened the door to the washroom I was about to enter she assumed I was part of the staff and assumed I was holding the door for her and flew into the washroom stall! DISGUSTING! 95% of the tourist were so ruse to the staff, eye rolling and never a please or thank you, never a smile to them, just terrible the way they were treated You are not allowed to bring in any of the outside public, so if you are traveling down to see family or friends unless your getting married you can not buy day or evening passes. We were on the beach and were asked to leave the beach as we were thought to be locals, who shouldn't make a difference, but it did, of course we didn't as we had on the hotel bands. Overall this hotel is rated a 4* and it is not a 4*, ok well yes maybe the property is, but as for everything else, I would give it a 3*. But if you are ok with vacationing to another country, and the whole staff and tourists are all English and Scottish then you'll do fine. Would I go back? NEVER AGAIN WOULD I GO BACK TO THIS HOTEL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I have stayed at better 3 star hotels in Dominican and other destinations, and this one is over rated that's for sure.

I am 44 years old visited Cuba- 4 times, Mexico- 1 time, Bahamas -1 time.
This review may have some influence due to comparison or expectation from my previous vacation. We are 14 of us (four families) stayed at the hotel from 30th June to 7th July 2007. Only the last day we had little rain, otherwise weather was beautiful. Yes! My conclusion is 'weather plays the major role'. Before the visit we read very bad reviews from various England guests about this hotel which made us very upset but Signature Vacation insisted it is under control. Let me mention a few good and minor bad things on this hotel. Skyservice Flight: As usual in North American flights all attendants were 45 or older.(Is this a regulation?) Food was average. You eat what they give. No option.Airport port transfers were friendly and the hotel reception was good. . Rooms were only available to us after 3 hours of our arrival.
At the hotel I noticed there is no manager level person available and if there is an issue every hotel reps will behave that they have no authority. It was noticeable that the hotel staffs having hard time to speak or understand English compared to staffs in Cuba or Mexico. This may be the reason why this hotel has all the live entertainers from England. Remember, during the live entertainments you will feel that you in England amusement park but not in Caribbean resort. I basically boycotted all of it. It was booooorrrring!. aaaoooowwwwwhhhhh. sleeeeepy.!
English entertainers are very reserved and shy. They could not go to the bottom of the way to bring up or boost the morale of the guests. They are trying hard but it is not the audience for English entertainers. You have to be joyful, crazy, fun and easy going. Basically you have to be a joker who brings the boring or stressed guests in to environment. It is very important that entertainers to say “Hi” or OOLa” every time you pass a guest. But they never did because they themselves feeling like guests but not like entertainers. If they were Caribbean entertainers it would have been fantastic. (I experienced in Cuba, Bahamas and Mexico). This is a major disaster area the hotel or vacation company should address. Bring in some Caribbean talents. we are here to see Caribbean culture.
I forgot the Digital camera at the La carte Dinner at Mexican restaurant on July 2nd . When we went back to ask, they said they never seen and never tried to investigate.. All the waiters are nice and honest but some time you get a bad one too. It is partly my mistake too for not taking care of it. Who should go here? This hotel is meant for families with kids 3- 10.years old. Period!. Yes! they have kid‘s program like preschool and activity classes. Honeymooners, adult groups, families with teens will not find anything other than meal, drink, pool and beach. If you happen to go then try to go out some excursions trips like high water fall trip, deep sea fishing, trip to Paradise Island, Ocean world or Safari trip. High water falls trip is not offered at hotel due to little risk involved. We booked the jeep safari and waterfalls tour from a vender at the beach (Emanuel). Tour was very thrilling and fun. We were given helmets and lifejackets then asked to climb seven water falls and then jumped and slide down on the way back. They will help the non swimmers. We felt the best spring water from the forest. One of the guides will come with you and video tape all your thrilling movement and sell it for 42.00 US Dollars. It was worth since you cannot capture most of them due to the water. Water falls activity is allowed for only over 8 yrs old. If you are buying a tour or souvenir Bargain! Bargain! Bargain! It is a Must! Bargain at least 25% of the price they ask. For example: To braid my daughter’s hair I reduce the price from $45.00 to $15.00. For your information, an average income for a waiter is $200.00/month. So you do the calculation what is worth what. Providing tips for the waiters and house maids are useful. It makes our life little easier.Pros: resort was calm. Since there were no rough teens or adults there was no sign of aggressive behavior. Kids are safer. No chance for physical injury. Good kids programs. Rooms are clean. Good drinks at bar. Food is good.
Cons: Communication problem in English. No real manager available to take complaints. Line up at bar or omelet table. Night time entertainment is very bad (No Caribbean Taste). Entertainments are only targeted for visitors from England. Good for families with small kids only. No good for adults, teens and honeymooners.

We stayed here 28th May-11June and no way is this a 4* hotel. We have stayed in better 2*'s in Gran Canaria!
We arrived in the middle of a thunder storm and when we entered our room in was raining in the room all over our daughters bed. Their solution to this was to push the bed over so only half of it got wet! The next thing that hit us was the smell (urine) it was disgusting. Their solution to this one was to turn the air conditioning up high. So the choice was ours - put up with it (no way) or freeze to death. The patio door didn't close - nothing done. Light in bathroom hanging by a wire - nothing done. Then to top it all the toilet broke!
When it rains, this place is a death trap. People slipping over and lots of broken bones and heads needing stitches. Also the drains are overflowing and the smell of human waste wasn't very nice to say the least.
We are not fussy eaters but we didn't think much of the buffet. The al a cartes (when you could get into them) weren't great but were better than the buffet.
The service everywhere was very slow but we put this down to bad management, not the staff. Having one chef in the beach bar at lunch time is a joke! Allow at least 2 1/2 hours when wanting to eat there. Also only having 2 bar staff at night does not go down very well.
We found the wavepool area to be very dirty. (A piece of pineapple on the floor was there for days.) The wavepool was very hit and miss. Some days it didn't come on at all. It also didn't help that on 4 occassions it had to be closed because some disgusting person kept using it as a toilet! This also happened in the activity pool.
On a more positive note the Wavelength club was great. Our daughter (11) had a brilliant time and made loads of friends.
We had 4 days of rain but then the weather was lovely - it got hotter every day.
The highlight of the holiday was Ocean World. It was fantastic. We did the dolphin and sea lion encounters. Take plenty of money because you will spend a fortune but it's well worth it.
Overall there were no major problems, just lots of little ones, that when added together resulted in a big disappointment. We all made the most of a bad situation and had a nice holiday but really for what we paid it should have been fantastic!
| Holiday Village Golden Beach | Beverly - ages 46, 37, 13, 11 |
Just returned from our holiday on the 11th june, was very disappointed with our room. We were in room 221. On arrival it was raining heavily, we were shown to our room only to discover there were no locks on our doors, my husband walked back to the reception and asked to be moved only to be told there were no rooms available and that someone would come over and fix the locks for us. We waited and waited and waited, eventually they did come and fixed the locks. Next morning we got in shower to find every time we showered there was a leak running down the wall onto the floor which left our room really slippery so we had to have a towel down for the whole 2 weeks. The lights were really dim and there was a light socket hung of the wall. Our children had to sleep on a sofa bed which we were told there would be 2 double beds and the room was so tiny not big enough for 4 people.
The weather was raining for 4 days on and off which is no ones fault and when it rains it RAINS.
As it had rained heavily all the drains became flooded it, the smell was disgusting you could see the sewage rising to the top. All the tiles became slippery and children were falling and hurting themselves.
After 4 days we enquired to move somewhere else.
But there were good things too
After all the negatives i think people should know about there was positives too
The kids club were fantastic my kids who are 13 and 11 loved every minute of it, all the reps were excellent and there was something going on at all times for them.
There was also plenty going off through day for the adults too if you wanted to get involved.
We went on 3 excursions and loved them all these were jeep safari outback, paradise island and the catamaran.
The pools were nice too although a bit small (main pool) the wave pool was great and the waterslides but be aware a small child broke there leg and rumour had it that it happened on the slides. (saw child in plaster but don't know how true rumour was)
The food was good most of the time and when we did get into the restaurants they were nice especially the lotus. In the main restaurant the service to get a drink wasn't very good but every thing else was good. They made lovely omelettes and pancakes on a morning and plenty of choice for everyone and loads of fresh fruit.
The beach was lovely and you could walk for miles and the locals were friendly
I just want people to know that not all the rooms are bad i heard people saying theirs were fine i think we were probably one of the unlucky ones and this is the first time i have complained about a first choice holiday and holiday village because the other holiday villages we have been to have been worth there 4* this one unfortunately hasn't i would only rate the rooms has 2*

My friend and I (both in our 20's) stayed at this resort from May 26th - June 2 2007. The resort is nice, nice rooms, we stayed in room 45-2. Never had a problem with the room, air worked, and we had plenty of hot water. Staff is very friendly. I'm a very picky eater, so of course I pretty much starved for the week, but the food I did eat was pretty good. We only went to one a la cart restaurants during our stay, we went to the oriental (Lotus) restaurant....VERY GOOD!. I was suprised. Classy and elegant. Honestly I can't comment on the pools because we never went in the pools once, we were always at the beach swimming or tanning. The beach is beautiful, always had enough chairs, Yes it is a nude beach though, and there were some ladies who went topless. I got my hair braided in the salon in the resort, cost me $60 US. We ended up going into town (Puerto Plata) twice during our weeks stay. We really enjoyed that. It's $35 US for a cab ride there-and-back into town, plus, if you get Henry and Raul for your drivers, Raul walks around town with you as your bodyguard. I miss Raul!. Oh, and when you go down to the beach, you WILL be bugged to buy a trip by Ramon!, he doesn't take NO for an answer. But he's a very nice guy. Don't buy ANYTHING on the actual resort, over-priced. If you don't want to go into town, take a walk inside the complex our resort is in, there's a mini-mall type thing with lots of stores in there, and it's only about a 10-15 minute walk from Holiday Village. Now, onto the BAD things of this resort, the nightlife!, absoloutly no nightly entertainment. There was entertainment from like 9-10:30pm, then kareokee until 11:30pm. I wasn't pleased. One night we went to the Mangu Disco Bar, also inside our complex where the resort is, we didn't like it. We were maybe 2 of 6 tourists, the rest were locals. They charged us $15 US for two drinks. They check you at the door with a metal dectector. Yeah, we didn't like it. Also this resort is NOT for young singles without children!!!. I would NOT recommend it to anyone who does not have children. Also, this resort is FULL of people from England, including my friend & I, there were about 11 Canadians staying at the resort(thats including small children), and like 600 English people. It was a crazy week, haha. The Signature/First Choice reps on the resort were very helpful and pleasant....kudo's to them!!. I wouldn't stay at this resort again, simply because it does not cater to young singles, but even still, we had an amazing time, no one got sick, and we can't wait to get back to the Dominican Republic!.
| Holiday Village Golden Beach | The Kaiser Family ~ Alberta |
My wife, my two oldest daughters (ages 8 and 10) and I stayed for seven days at the Holiday Golden Beach Resort and had an amazing time. I definitely recommend it if you are bringing children with you. They have renovated the entire resort and the grounds were very nicely landscaped and the beach was large and very beautiful. There were water slides a wave pool, and a kiddie pool with little slides that would keep the children occupied all day. The family room consisted of bunk beds partially partitioned off from the main room with old western style swinging doors and the children loved it. The only problem was that the lighting was very dim and it was very hard to find anything, especially in your safe, as soon as it got dark out. I recommend that you bring a flashlight.
The food was not spectacular but it wasn’t bad either and was always hot. You can always find something you liked as there was a good selection and variety. We were not that impressed with the food or the service at the a la carte restaurants (Mexican and Japanese). Although, my wife did get a free meringue lesson from one of the waiters while we were waiting for our food.
You can definitely save money on the tours if you sign up with Manuel out on the beach instead of going with the hotel excursions, and they are just as good if not better. If you take the jeep safari that ends up at the waterfall, ensure that you know how to swim and know what you are getting yourself into. I had a blast climbing up the waterfalls but many people did not expect the amount of climbing and swimming involved and if you are closterphobic this is not the tour for you because some of the caverns you swim through are pretty narrow and dark. This was not explained very clearly to anyone even at the waterfalls. We bought a suitcase full of toys, pens, paper, books and candy from the dollar store before we left Canada to give to the children while on the safari tours and the smiles on their faces was worth the price of admission alone.
The staff at the resort was very friendly and quite helpful. The bartenders always remembered your name and drink and they always had a healthy pouring arm.
The Mangu disco bar located just on the outside of the resort compound is supposed to be a disco catering to the tourists but it is very popular with the locals. We were probably about 2 out of 10 tourists in the entire disco and it was packed from wall to wall. This is definitely not a place to go if you are not into loud rave music and crowded dance floors. It was definitely a tad seedy with a few transvestites and hookers not to mention a metal detector at the door. The gentleman in front of me had to check his two guns at the door. No matter, my wife and I had a great time there dancing up a storm on a Friday night. We never felt threatened or insecure and everybody was quite friendly as they were also there to have a good time.
If you are going to Puerto Plata to shop you may be a bit disappointed, because the shops are few and far between. We were happy that we bought most of our souvenirs from the local people that need the money, but you could find everything at the airport duty free for much cheaper on the trip back.
I would definitely go back to Holiday Golden Beach Resort especially if I was bringing the kids, but if it was just the wife and I, we would probably seek out a more romantic resort. All in all it was a great holiday.

My husband and I, and our 2 girls ages 8 and 9 had a wonderful time at this resort. It was just beautiful everyday, it was like we woke up to the same beautiful day. We had a family room and it was perfect for us, the girls just used the T.V. as a night light. The room was clean everyday and we had no problems with the A/C or hot water!
The staff here were wonderful and eager to help make your stay a great one. We did some of the family activities with the in2action team and we had a blast. The wave pool and waterslides were a huge hit for my family.
We went to the Italian and Lotus restaurant and we enjoyed both. You can get pizza at the Mexican restaurant in the evening or during the day, which my husband loved. The buffet always had good food so we enjoyed it just as much or more than the other restaurants. We were prepared but no one got sick from the food. One of our daughters was sick for most of the trip but she caught it before we left...and she still had a great time.
We went to Ocean World and did the dolphin encounter and it was the highlight of out trip. My husband went "deep-sea fishing" or should I say an expensive boat ride! They said that there would only be 4 people on the boat and there were 12! My husband is an avid fisherman and said that the "deep-sea fishing" was a joke and a money grab.
We were so busy during the day that by 9:00pm we were usually in bed, so we missed most of the nightly entertainment. The shopping was fun but a little overwhelming at first. I got the hang of it by day 3. Offer 1/3 of what they ask, most will barter. Got some beautiful paintings and jewelry (bring lots of smaller bills).
I think that it's all what YOU make it!
Hello "Steel town"!
| Holiday Village Golden Beach | Ottawa, Canada |
We had a great time at the resort and would go again. We went expecting the food would be different, there may be bugs, we may have the runs for a day or two, and service would not be what we are used to here. And we went prepared with necessary medications just in case. The result, we had a wonderful family vacation! Am surprised about some of the negative comments, especially the food, guess it depends on your expectations. We heard few complaints from other visitors while we were there.
For activities for the kids you can't beat it! It was fabulous, they were occupied for the week! They had a blast at the waterslides, wave pool and kids' clubs, even the adults! With regards to the event schedules including the movie schedule, there is a complete list on a wall near the bar that is next to the main pool. Just ask an activity staff member, they can direct you. Kid's club activities are posted on their respective activity buildings.
Family Room - The family room accommodation was great! The kids loved the bunk beds. No problem with our room 27-2, A/C worked, it was clean, no bugs, no leaks, no problem with hot water or electricity, a little dark but we were only there in the evenings to go to bed so it wasn't really an issue for us. Our room was cleaned everyday but didn't need to be, empty water bottles were replaced (we left $2-3 US on the bed each day, maybe that helped). Yes, it was close to the wave pool machines which could be loud but it only ran during the day and we were rarely in our room then.
Restaurants - buffet, we found it to be very good, lots of variety, we never saw repeated entrees during our week. All of us could find something we liked and our kids aren't very adventurous when it comes to new foods. Contrary to other reports we found the tables to be cleared quickly, if it was dirty we just looked for another table, no big deal! If we didn't get our drinks right away we politely asked for some.
Italian restaurant - very nice, menu is limited but food is good.
Mexican restaurant - OK for dinner, good pizzas for lunch
Lotus - didn't try but heard it's mainly Japanese
Caribbean - didn't try it though heard it was good
Wave pool bar - served chicken nuggets, hamburgers and fries that I saw in mid-afternoon (until 4-4:30 pm I think). Great for kids who can't last until 6:30 pm when the restaurants open for dinner. (We brought some snacks with us, crackers, granola bars, chips, fruit rollups to tide the kids over between meals and on the flights. Left space in our luggage to bring back souvenirs! :-))
Beach bar/restaurant - I heard they served lunch there. And yes they have washrooms, very short walk if you are on the beach. Birthdays - We arranged for a birthday cake for our daughter at the Mexican restaurant. Ordered it through the a la carte booking desk the day before. Very nice large tasty cake, decorated with her name on it. The waiters sang happy birthday.
Evening entertainment - always had something for the children from 8-9pm, was a little dry but these young Canadians and Brits are trying hard. Would have liked some Dominican entertainment.
Beach and pools - clean, nice sandy beach, lots of beach chairs. Never had a problem finding some shade or sharing shade at either site. FYI - there were topless sunbathers on the beach.
Safety - tile floors are very slippery, staff mopped up after each rain but still had to be careful! Also slippery in the wave pool, we brought water shoes for the kids. Note: main pool, wave pool and waterslide pool are all shallow pools.
hair braiding - on the beach ladies who do braiding are wearing orange shirts, they'll find you! Barter! Expect to pay US$25-50. Have exact amount, they often don't have change. Can also get braiding done at the resort salon. Bring spray sunscreen to protect the scalp.
Other notes: take bathing suits, sandals and sunscreen in your carry-on luggage in case your room isn't ready upon arrival (before 3pm), you can enjoy the pool while you wait. Take lots of $1US bills for tipping and for small purchases, change will be given back only in Dom. Pesos and you can't exchange it back.
Punta Rusia tour - long day! 6:20 am - 4:30 pm. 1-1/2 hour bus ride to the speedboats, 30-45 min. on the speedboat, and 3 hour bus ride home from Punta Rusia! Bring tshirt for snorkelling.
Airplane flight - I'd have to say going both ways, the in-flight meals were not very good. That is something that SkyService could improve on. Next time I think I'd buy a sandwich to take on with me. Seating is tight but you are getting a cheaper holiday by choosing to fly with a charter. If you want comfort expect to pay a lot more!

I think "David & Mary" said most of what we would say about holiday village. We just returned after spending a week in +30 returning to -30 .........perfect weather (there)
I was a bit disappointed with accommodations upon arriving mostly because I had called up a signature agent here and asked for clarification on room types at the resort. I was told HERE that 1k/1Q on the internet meant 1 king plus 1 queen bed in room. I doubled checked a few times, but was reassured this is the info they had. Upon arrival in DR, the receptionist said that wasn't possible as the rooms were not big enough for 2 beds .............so we had a cot plus 1queen ............not a big deal...room was always clean
The staff were all couteous, the rooms clean, the food quite acceptable in buffet restaurant and excellent in the Italian, oriental and Mexican. Always food somewhere to eat. (Eat in moderation). Signature reps were always around to answer questions. I liked the fact that this resort is set back from road, so I'm sure it might be a little quieter than surrounding resorts. You do need to book a la carte and we figured they are not filling each sitting up each night because they are getting the staff properly trained to handle full sitting. We found the waiters/waitresses (in the buffet) attentive for the most part unless you went for continental breakfast or after hours and expected full service.
the resort is a really nice size for getting around ..........bungalow style buildings...2 storeys only. There were no mosquitos at this time. the number i was given for front desk (from signature) FYI is 809-320-3800. If you're looking for books to read, you just need to go to signature station ..they have shelf of books to borrow. as for our flights .........they were both right on time and airflight staff very pleasant. And yes, the seating is tight ...but the flight is less than 4 hours from toronto.
I can not say enough about the "enthusiasm and great work" the in2action team did. they are a group of young men and women in early 20's that want to make sure you have something new to try while you're there. "Matt" ........test him if you go..........he remembers everyone's names!
We did the ATV trip, but booked from outside of signature vacations on site. If you want to see the rough side of things in DR, you will see all you need to see on one of these half day adventures. We preferred the ATVs..........they want to push the dune buggy style a bit more, but we were told they don't go as fast. One word of caution: as with most off site trips, BEWARE: you will run into the beggars somewhere on your trip .........and they are not happy with $1 ...they actually request $4-$5 .......so if you feel like Santa clause, then you'll love it. One thing we might have done differently on that trip (as it was only the 3 of us + guide) would've been to speak to guide and say "we'll tip you at end of trip, but don't want to along excursion" (we were confronted at least 4-5 times)
The beach was great as were the daily waves. you do not need to go in very far at all. The shells are also beautiful, and the sand stays with you.
the "garage" on the beach was great fun to bargain at. Our 12 year old became an expert and didn't pay more than 1/3 of what they originally ask for ...so enjoy that part
"Lucy" is right there if you need your hair braided ...again bargain
more advice: try to take what you need in American funds from here as exchanging and/or getting pesos there is very expensive. Likewise if you need to buy any kind of pharmaceutical product there, you will find it very very pricey
GREAT RESORT ...........they are doing very well for only being open a few months. You will find Canadians and British there as signature only caters to those countries.............so don't be surprised if you find your neighbour down the street vacationing while you're there ....HAVE FUN
if the family from "tobacco town" signs on here, then family from "steel city" says hi

Hi: We just returned from a one week vacation at Holiday Village Golden Beach Dominican Republic. January 25th-February 1st, 2007. I was a little nervous about this resort from some of the previous reports. But, we had a blast. The staff are wonderful, especially the ones that arranged the kids activities. Our ten year old son loved them. He is generally very shy but had tears in his eyes when we left as he was sad that he would not see Tim, Shannon, Joe, Matt, and Rick again. There is tons for them to do from little ones up to the ages of 15. The night shows were a bit cheesy, but hey, the kids really tried and they were fine. You were pretty tired at the end of the day anyways and usually wanted to go to bed early after a long day in the sun. The resort was very clean and the food was O.K. But, we didn't expect gourmet meals anyways. The Italian and Oriental Restaurants were great. The rooms are kept clean and housekeeping was great. We stayed in 27-3 the first two nights and was right beside the wave pool. It was too loud and the room was a bit small and dark. We asked to be moved and they obliged. We were moved to 12-2 and were very happy. It was a larger room and a lot nicer and quieter. Everything worked. I wouldn't say the rooms were four star, but they satisfied us and we will return next year. There are only Canadians and Brits that stay at the hotel. We didn't do any of the outside trips, as we heard from most people that they were long days.
There is lots to do without leaving the resort. The beach had great waves for boogie boards for the older kids. The wave pool was refreshing from the heat and not cold like some people have stated. The only bad part of our vacation was our flight home, as we flew through the tornado that hit Florida. We can hardly wait to go back next year.

We have just returned from the Holiday Village Golden Beach Resort, Puerto Plata, D.R. Our stay was from Dec 23, 2006 to Jan 6, 2007. We chose this resort in Puerto Plata due to the 4-star rating and the price for a 2-week stay.
Resort rating – In comparison to other resorts in Puerto Plata or the Playa Dorada area, it is a 4-star resort. However, it will be a 3-star resort in comparison to resorts in Jamaica, Barbados, Aruba, St Martin, etc.
Restaurants – There are 4 restaurants within the resort. The general buffet restaurant with 3 ala carte restaurants, Oriental, Mexican & Italian. The oriental restaurant, Lotus, and the Italian restaurant are very nice and fairly classy with the Mexican, Pancho Villa, being casual. We found the food in all 4 restaurants to be very good, even after 14 days at the resort. It was the first time I tried the goat and it was very good!
There is a fifth restaurant being built, Caribbean Restaurant, that should be ready sometime in February ‘07. It is on the beach and open aired - will be great once it is finished.
Reservations are required in the ala carte restaurants with 2 seating’s available, at 6:30 and 8:30, nightly. However, the Mexican restaurant is closed on Fridays.
Men are required to wear long pants/slacks in the ala carte restaurants. Although this is mentioned in the travel brochures, the orientation sessions and the reservation letters, male guest still arrive in shorts.
The main buffet restaurant has smoking and non-smoking sections that is great for non-smokers.
Gym – There is a small but very well equipped gym available. The equipment is brand new and should remain new as it was hardly used for the 14 days we were there.
Rooms – We found our room to be a bit small even though we booked a “Royal Suite” that was described as more spacious. Other that the size, the room was quite nice but basic. There was a 19” television with a DVD player, fridge & bedside clock/radio.
The room was cleaned every day with fresh towels provided – 4 bath, 2 hand, 2 wash and 1 floor. Brand new bathrobes and terry cloth slippers were also provided.
The fridge was re-stocked every day with domestic beer, pop and bottled water. You were also provided with 2 x 1.5L bottles of water to brush your teeth with, should you choose to do so. Although we did not drink the water directly from the tap, we brushed our teeth with the tap water and suffered no negative consequences.
Pools – There were 4 pools within the resort.
The “activities pool” was just beside the buffet restaurant and the outside bar. As the name suggested, it was busy with diving lessons, swimming lessons, water polo, etc.
The “main pool” was a wave pool that had wave action for 20 minutes every 40 minutes. There were 2 water slides that were lots of fun for both kids and adults alike. There was a bar/grill within the “main pool” area for your convenience as it was a 5 minute walk to the buffet restaurant.
There was a “kid’s pool” for pre-schoolers – we cannot comment as we only saw it at night as we were strolling around the resort after dinner.
There was an “adults-only pool” that was assigned to the guest of the “Royal Suites”, the adults-only section of the resort. The “Royal Suite” guests wore a different colored wrist band that allowed use and access to the “VIP Club House”, the “adults-only pool”, the “adults-only beach”, etc. However, it was not unusual to find general guest using the facilities assigned to the “Royal Suites” even though they did not pay the supplementary cost to do so.
Beach – The beach was nice and we did not have a problem accessing chairs regardless of the time we got to the beach. The water is great for swimming but not for snorkeling. However, it is not that beautiful blue/green colour you would find in Varadero or Punta Cana. You can walk for miles in either direction, and there are many resorts along the way. The Holiday Village resort caters to Canadian and British guests only, so don’t expect to see too much European sunbathing, i.e. topless tanning. Other neighboring resorts, having European guest, did have their share of topless tanning but nothing to the extreme.
Nightly entertainment – From 8:00 to 9:00 PM there was a kids’ interactive show that the kids appeared to enjoy. From 9:00 to 9:30 PM there was BINGO where you could win cash prices. However; the show from 9:30 to 10:30 PM was nothing short of bad karaoke with the performers frequently forgetting their lines. As the resort only opened in December ’06, this may improve over time.
Playa Dorada Plaza – There is a plaza within a 10 minute “lazy” walk that has some fairly decent stores with prices much lower that the gift store in the resort. Alcohol, i.e. domestic rum, in the plaza is around the same price as airport duty free; but shop around as prices differ significantly from store to store. There is a store called Jimenez where you can get some terrific deals on European & British team soccer shirts, designer jeans, etc. Hugo Boss, Versace, etc jeans for US$20.00 per pair! However, stay away from a clothing store called Mara. They will speak perfect English when you are buying something but suddenly can only speak Spanish if you need to get something exchanged! There are about 2 to 3 vendors in the plaza offering tours that were much cheaper than booking with the resort.
The “Garage” – Within a 5 minute walk on the beach, left of the resort, there is a flea market. Mainly wood carvings, coral necklaces, paintings, etc.
Tours – We took advantage of 4 tours – Paradise Island, ATV, horse back-riding and the Jeep Safari. All were enjoyable except for the Jeep Safari that was far too long. The hi-lit of the Jeep Safari was the falls. It would cost you a fraction if 4 people took a taxi to the falls, paid the entrant fee and tipped the guides.
Comments – Over all, it is a great resort for guests with young children. If you have children between ages 4 – 12, it is a great resort as there are dedicated “In2Action” coordinators that will keep them busy. Teens will find it boring with little to do. Guests without children, like ourselves, could take advantage of the various tours ($) available. We heard that several guests had problems with their rooms but we did not encounter any major concerns. The toilet did not flush but it was fixed by the 2nd day. There will be laundry facilities in the near future (1 dryer, 1 washer). Although the dryer was not hooked up while we were there, it should be by February. There are laundry facilities in the Fun Royal resort within walking distance, in the Playa Dorado area (5 dryers, 4 washers). It is about USD$1 to wash & USD$1 to dry a load of laundry with Fab detergent sold in the gift shop – a cheaper alternative than using the resort laundry services at USD$1 per item.
There are approximately 17 resorts in the Playa Dorado area. The entrance off the highway is controlled by guards and there are additional guards at the entrance to each resort. Generally, we felt very safe in the Playa Dorado area as well as within our resort.
Advice – Negotiate everything! Start by offering them ¼ of their asking price. Don’t worry; you would not be offending them. This includes the various tours.
Book your ala cart meals as soon as you arrive.

I was part of a group of 22 who traveled to the Holiday Village Golden Beach in Puerto Plata recently. 20 of us December 28/06 – January 11 /07 and 2 others traveled January 2 – 16/07. We had nothing but problems from the start. First, one person’s luggage was lost leaving this person to have to beg, borrow and steal clothing, swim attire and toiletries until his luggage finally showed up a week later. Upon arrival at the resort it was chaos checking in and there wasn't a signature rep to be found. We had booked 3 family rooms, 3 standard rooms with 2 queen beds and a king with a cot. We were also told that our group would be all together in the same building and that the 2 families that we were required to book 2 rooms because the rooms did not accommodate more than 4 people and they had more in their family would have adjoining rooms. We did not get any rooms with 2 queen beds or a king bed, only single queen beds. Families of 3 & 4 were expected to share 1 queen bed. None of us were even close to one another, we were scattered all over the place. Even the 2 larger families requiring adjoining rooms for their children were not even close to one another. This meant that they would have children by themselves on the other side of the resort! This was completely unacceptable. The front desk staff proceeded to say that they had nothing else available and that there was nothing they could do. To top things off one family had paid for the baby pack which was not available either. This meant that there was not even a crib for their baby to sleep in – ridiculous! They had to make due until the following evening before a crib and stroller finally showed up. We were forced to alter our accommodations between our group which meant mixing families up just so we could feel more at ease about where our children were at night. To top things off we arrive in evening just as the buffet was closing and nothing else was open so everyone went to bed hungry.
Our problems with the rooms continued. The air conditioning did not work, there were plumbing issues – no hot water at times, sinks and tubs not draining, water pooling on the bathroom floor. The rooms had very poor lighting. The family rooms were supposed to have 2 TVs, one with a playstation. One of the TVs in our room was broken and there was no playstation. The patio doors did not lock – this was a big safety concern. The bar fridge consisted of 4 pops and 2 bottles of water and it was never replenished during our entire 2 week stay.
Housekeeping was hit and miss. There was always something missed. Some days the dirty towels would be taken but not replaced with clean ones. There were days we didn’t have the bare necessities such as toilet paper and soap. Some days the rooms were not even cleaned at all.
Public areas were no better. There were no toilet paper holders in any of the public washrooms resulting in toilet paper being on the floor frequently. Toilets often did not work or overflowed. The floor tiles throughout the resort are extremely slippery when wet. It is only a matter of time before someone falls and is seriously injured, if it hasn’t happened already.
The gym was not open until the 2nd week of our stay and there were no Daniel Fitness Classes as advertised. This was something I was really looking forward to and one of the features that drew me to this resort. Also the adults in our group were not permitted access to the adult pool. Nowhere in the brochure does it say you must be a VIP member to use the adult pool. The resort is advertised as having 3 pools, of which one is for adults only. This leaves the non-VIPs with the activity pool which is very small – too small – can only accommodate a few people. Not enjoyable at all. Especially as it is the only pool other than the children’s wave pool for everyone to use.
The Caribbean restaurant was still being constructed. There were no washrooms on the beach and it was quite a trek to get to one in the resort. The beach bar was under construction so there was a make shift bar, and no beach snack bar either as advertised.
We brought our own thermal mugs. They are large so it is not necessary to make so many trips to the bar and they keep the drink cold longer, the insects out and reduce waste (no need for numerous plastic cups). We were given some grief about these mugs at the beach bar. The bartender there seemed annoyed by filling these mugs – not sure why. He would only fill the mugs ½ full and give us a dirty look.
The pool snack bar made pizza in 10 minutes they said, but we waited 11/2 hours on 2 separate occasions. The buffet was nothing special – the food was very repetitive and there were periods when there was no food available. This is difficult for parents with small children that need to eat frequently and not necessarily at the scheduled meal times.
Getting a clean table at the buffet is nearly impossible and the staff do not move very quickly to clear one for you. One night after waiting for over 15 min, I asked 3 separate staff if they could clear a dirty table for my family and they kept telling me to ask someone else. It took over 30 min to get the table cleaned. Once you were able to get a clean table it was rare to be able to get a drink with your meal. Staff almost never offered and there isn’t a self-serve drink area. It is also worth noting that the majority of the people in our group were very ill at one time or another during our vacation.
Booking of alacart restaurants was painful. I was told by the booking staff that you could only book during 9-11 and 3-5 for the next day. However, twice when I stood in line for the next day I was told they were full because they had taken bookings for the next day the previous day which I had been told they did not do so just how did that happen? I did manage to get into the oriental restaurant one evening and to my surprise it was ½ empty. I am not sure what is going on here.
The laundry facilities were broken the entire 2 weeks and no one seemed too anxious to repair them.
Although the brochure states that there are 2 movies daily, I could not find a schedule anywhere and no one seemed to be able to tell me either.
There was a large language barrier with staff, especially front desk. They had difficulties understanding what I needed and it was necessary to repeat my concerns several times before I got any action (ie. Repairing the air conditioning took 2 days).
There need to be more garbage receptacles provided to prevent people from just leaving their garbage all over the place.
Activities were geared more towards younger children. Our teens were often bored. The high wires cost an outrageous $15.00 for each section. Come on people this is supposed to be an all-inclusive resort not a pay as you go.
The entertainment – what can I say - Horrible. I can play bingo at home. Same songs every night for the kids, cheesy entertainment for the adults. Disappointed none of the entertainers were Dominican. That’s what you go to the Dominican – to see Dominicans.
There was far too much smoke. Need to have designated smoking areas and there shouldn’t be smoking in the restaurants.
Signature reps selling tours know nothing about the tours they are selling. Were told one tour was a 1 hour drive and it turned out to be 3 hours. We wouldn’t have gone if we had known we would be spending 6 hours in a bus and only 3 hours of the actual tour.
I have stayed at many all-inclusive resorts ranging from 3* – 4+. This resort is not a 4* resort, it is more like a 2.5 or 3 at the highest. If this resort had been advertised for what it truly is not a new resort, but a 35 year old, poorly renovated, understaffed and uncompleted resort we would have never booked our vacation here. At the very least this resort should not have opened until all advertised services were up and running, staff trained adequately and all accommodation issues properly addressed.
To top off our vacation, the 2 people traveling January 2 – 16 were bumped to another resort as a result of the Holiday Village being overbooked. This was a huge inconvenience for our group as this meant travel back and forth for them to visit the rest of the group. I felt horrible for them. How does something like this happen? How do you book non-existent rooms?
By far the worst part of my trip was the treatment I received from the signature reps. I went in to express my concerns with the signature rep and she didn’t want to hear what I had to say. She interrupted me and bluntly said “It doesn’t matter what concerns I had, nothing will happen even if I send in a formal complaint because I signed a contract that states in the fine print that at any time they can “take anything away” – end of discussion. I was appalled to be spoken to in this manner. I am most certainly not interested in doing any business with a company that treats its customers in this manner.
This holiday cost me, my family and friends a lot of money and gave us nothing but grief. We should be compensated for not receiving the services advertised. This will go down in our memory books as our worst holiday ever!

We stayed in room 02.1 in the Royal suites section. Our children & grandchildren stayed in the regular non-suites area so we experienced both types of accommodation.
The previous reviews on this site are a bit t
