The Dominican Republic is without a doubt one of the best holiday destinations to visit with children. Sun, sand, deep blue seas and smiling faces appeal to adults and children alike. Around each corner on the island lies a small adventure. Kids love to make new friends and language is rarely an obstruction for children to play together. Travelling with children involves some extra preparation, especially if one parent stays at home or when you travel with an adopted child. I recommend bringing enough essential products for your (small) child with you since specialty items are often hard to find or really expensive. When you take care with the tropical sun, food and especially the water, nothing will stand in the way of an unforgettable holiday experience for your child and yourself.

When you travel with a child for the first time it is important to plan for a slower pace than you have been used to. Whenever possible choose a hotel or resort that caters to parents travelling with children. Family orientated all-inclusive resorts often offer an activities club for children (make sure the “kids club” does not just means a bunch of kids watching Donald Duck on TV), special pools, baby cribs, child seats in the restaurants and even a baby-sit service. I personally find it really helpful when there is a fridge in the hotel room to keep food, fruits and drinks fresh. Most stomach discomfort stems from drinking or using tap water for food (salad) preparation, it takes some time to fully get used to the idea only to use treated or bottled water. In general it is a good idea to have some whole fruits like bananas or avocados handy. They are safe to eat and can save the day. Mosquito’s are another issue I like to touch upon. Bring some anti bug spray specially formulated for children. A ventilator is a more natural way to keep bugs away. Long sleeved t-shirts offer some protection against mosquito bites as well as the tropical sun. Bring plenty of suntan lotion. Resorts normally sell some but at often outrageous prices. In case your child has special needs, I recommend having all relevant health information handy all the time.

Why not leave the all-inclusive resort for what it is and take your kids on a tour of the country? Simple adventures like coming in contact with other children and a new language or hiking along an exciting trail make for everlasting memories. One of the best ways to discover a country with a child is by renting a car. No waiting for buses and taxis, you are free to come and go as you please! Important is that you make sure the car has a child seat or that you bring a universal child car seat with you. Festivals, live music events and markets are great to check out with children, establishing a meeting point when going to crowded places gives a lot of peace of mind.
