We ate last night at Los "Locos in frente" This is located on the callejon de la loma approx 1 city block of of the calle principal in Cabarete. The wife had filet of Meru (grouper), I had a steak, the kids had burgers.w/ fry's everything was very good and the steak could be cut with a fork, perfectly cooked over an open flame. The filet of Meru was huge and cooked very well too. cost was $1100.00 RD. This included 2 mixed drinks. Top of Page
As said above, Tropicoco was a wonderful place for our late Saturday dinner. For Sunday lunch we walked 100 feet down the beach from our place to a beachfront spot called Sun Dreams. Wonderful pasta, sandwiches and burgers for $800 RD for the 4 of us, and make-shift pool table. Spectacular beach vistas. We had the place to ourselves until a couple guys showed up for their 3-beer, 3-shot lunch. We ate there Monday, Tuesday and Thursday too. Sunday night we went to Las Brisas in town for a nice meal on the beach for around $1700 RD. When eating on the beach you should consider bug spray -- my daughter got a number of sand fly bites that lasted several days. Stopped at Bon for ice cream. Monday night we ventured out the local road toward the “caves” to an authentic Dominican place called Mercedes. Wonderful dinner for around $800 RD for all of us. When we showed up the only other patrons were a family from Wisconsin who had walked there from their resort -- at least a mile on a rough road. They seemed relieved to see us and were very happy when we gave them a lift back to town after dinner. Stopped at Bon for ice cream. Tuesday night to another local spot called Fat Chicken, located beyond the east end of town. Great food for cheap, $1050 RD. Quite the scene as all kinds of folks showed up later competing for one of the 4 tables in the whole place. Stopped at Bon for ice cream. Wednesday lunch was PJ’s in Sousua. Good pub grub, at $1200 RD. It was an old times sake lunch, as I had known Jose, the original owner of PJ’s, more than 20 years ago. PJ’s then was just a narrow bar. The jewelry shop across the street, Patrick’s Silversmith, dates from that era, and Patrick is still there. A great place to buy a jewelry gift. We cruised the stalls at the beach, negotiating sunglasses from $1200 RD to $250 RD, and doing less well on t-shirts from $400 RD to $300 RD. Back in Cabarete for dinner we went to LAX for wonderful beachfront dining. Great vegetable curry, wings, fajitas and pizza for $1500 RD for all of us. We learned there that the bigger restaurants use ice from filtered water so it’s safe to drink. Oh yea, stopped at Bon for ice cream. Thursday dinner we walked along the beach to Jose O’Shays in the middle of town for another beachfront meal. Food was good, although relatively pricey at $2400 RD. Top of Page
We really got tired of the buffet style of eating so we were so happy to find Chris & Mady's restaurant up the road from the hotel . It is only a five minute walk from the Tropical and an excellent spot to visit. Chris is originally from Winnipeg and his wife Mady from DR run a super bar/restaurant with TV's for those of us who like to keep up with hockey, auto racing, etc. Their food is fantastic and very reasonable. Be sure to take the time to stop by and visit them! It is well worth the trip!!! Top of Page
We took an evening trip to Porta Plata to a restaurant called "The Ponderosa" this was on the recommendation of a women from Montreal we had met earlier. We contacted a taxi operator named Joel who made all of the arrangements. He picked us up at 6:30 and drove us directly to the small but tidy restaurant (It sat approximately 16 people). Joel disappeared as soon as we were out of the taxi, we were then met by three servers (Female) one who spoke broken English and the other no English.. This was the beginning of a most enjoyable evening. This restaurant specialized in local lobsters (they have no claws). You are shown to 4 large glassed in tanks that contain lobsters fro 1 lb to 5 lbs, you pay by the pound a select how you want it done out of the menu) WHAT A TREAT. I STRONGLY suggest giving this try ( with soup, appetizers buns. lots of beer as well as desert and tip our bill came to $220.00 for all four of us Top of Page
What a memorable evening we had!...dining exactly as this former waitress of Toronto high class restaurants/clubs covets - a leisurely spent evening filled with excellent food! The filet mignon was prepared perfectly to my desires! I have eaten garlic bread countless times, but Cafe Cito's was truly the best I have ever had in my life! I want the recipe as I can't quite duplicate it.
My boyfriend loved the cigars Tim suggested and has developed a taste for sipping rum.
Of the countless positive reviews for this restaurant, I read only one negative one. I think the reviewer must have North American fast-food taste in dining. And he certainly isn't a connaisseur of men's looks. Scruffy he calls Tim Hall?? I think not. Most women would see a Hemmingway quality - charming, sexy and handsome. Most men would see a bon ami willing to share the best of his cigars, fine rum and anecdotes.

But if you do go, go around 9pm at the earliest as it only starts to get “Rockin’” around 10pm. Great atmosphere, great people and apparently, it doubles as the Canadian Consulate. The proprietor, Mr. Hall will give you the low-down on the Island and will ensure that you have a great time. Who is this “knucklehead” that had the audacity to write a negative review anyhow. He just be a miserable son-of-a-gun (I betcha he's a mommas-boy). My wife had a melt-in-your-mouth Steak, I had the Double Chops and my Daughter had the Spaghetti. Another “must try” is the grilled vegetable platter. It’s great! All much better than any Restaurant in the Plata area. Honestly, go and have a great evening. Top of Page
We ate at Chili's Thailand restaurant recently, located above Sosua in La mulata. The four (2 adults and 2 children) of us ate for $900.00 RD. This included and apetiser. everything was excellent except the drive up the hill on a not so smooth road. We ate at Moru Mai last week. This is next to the famous La roca restaurant on Pedro Clisante in the Heart of Sosua. The food and service is always excellent and probably the cleanest place in town.Kids had chicken breats sandwiches w/ rice and salads my wife and I both had Fillet de Meru our favorite thing on their menu. everything was excellent Cost $1200.00 RD Top of Page
This outdoor bar is located right where the hotel shuttle buses drop off and pick up. Canadians Mark and Colleen who run the bar are terrific people. While you are sipping on your Caesar, ask them for local information, as they are very knowledgeable and friendly. Colleen also does delicious, made to order sandwiches which can be ordered to go. Take one with you down to the beach or even for the plane trip home - they beat airline food hands down! Top of Page
February 2005 3 of us , so it is a little pricier , but well worth it . Their service was great , and the staff was really friendly. It's a great alternative to the hotel's buffet. For those of you who don't like seafood, they also pizza on the menu, they even deliver! Top of Page
I just wanted to share with you...a memorable experience at Puntilla de Piergiorgio in Sosua. I had my wedding there this august and it was amazing....this is one of the most romantic places that I have ever been...the sunset was amazing..the hotel..although not five star...really made everyone feel great! The rooms need updating in the main building...but all my guest in the new building were very comfortable....
The FOOD was Excellent on both nights...we hosted a barbecue the night before the wedding at the same hotel...Stick to dominican cuisine and you cant go wrong...
Anyway...I thought it would be nice to let others know how great it was...

In February 2005, we visited the La Puntilla de Piergiorgi. It was a thoroughly enjoyable experience. The restaurant was reminiscent of a Greek restaurant perched on a cliff over the turquoise Caribbean with a brilliant blue sky. The food was excellent and well presented with a fine wine list and discrete attentive waiters (they didn't pester you every 2 minutes asking how everything was!). The ambience was delightful and the layout of the dining areas well thought out with multilevel areas so you didn't have to look at a sea of other diners. Top of Page
Samana
Just got back from Samana in the DR this week. After my visit to a certain restaurant located in the downtown Samana area I knew I had to write a review and let everyone know about it. After enduring and usually enjoying the typical buffet style food at our resort (Occidental Gran Bahia) we decided to try after being recommended to it by others travelers in our hotel. We took a cab ride down to the downtown area and told the driver where we going and was dropped off right in front of the restaurant. Upon arrival we were greeted and given a seat on the patio. We were surprised and delighted to find that the menu was not only in English but German and Spanish as well. This was fantastic as we would at least know what we were going to be ordering. The waitress who was serving us spoke French but was able to communicate in English pretty well with us. I had been told by the group that recommended us that the steak fillet was fantastic and it could be ordered medium or well done. Unfortunately, the other beef orders were only available rare. Three of my group ordered the beef fillet, one ordered the T-bone, one ordered the chicken skewers and one ordered the meat platter. As an appetizer before our meal we were given loaves of bread with melted garlic butter on the side for dipping. This helped pass the time as we were advised that our steaks would take approximately 20 mins to cook. While we waited we were able to watch Samana pass by and the water across the street. The waitress was always available if we needed anything and was adept at keeping the shoe shiners and children selling stuff away when they came by (which was not often). When our meal did arrive it came with a baked potato, half a tomato, and another green vegetable, both done in a type of garlic sauce. The steak itself is perfect when cooked medium, covered in a peppercorn sauce. The whole meal was fantastic. Everything tasted perfect. The whole meal was filled with everyone exclaiming on how great their food was. From the tomato to the potato everything was cooked perfectly. I have not had a better meal at a restaurant. Ever. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed their meals and ate every bite. With our meal we had two bottles of wine and several sodas. The water was bottled, as well the ice was fine to use at it was purified water (has holes through the center). We did not indulge in any dessert though the table next to ours had a flambé type dessert that looked great. Our meal total was 5460 pesos. This equals approximately $194 USD. This was for 6 people with 2 bottles of wine. It was well worth it and if we had not gone so late in the week, we definitely would have gone again. I highly recommend visiting this restaurant if you are staying in Samana. In a couple years this will be the new spot, so please keep this place in mind! Enjoy!
Just returned from Punta Cana and cannot say enough good things about the Jellyfish. Our group ate there twice. One dinner and one long enjoyable lunch. Both Gabriel and Wanda could not have been more accomadating. The food and drinks were excellent. It was a very pleasant surprise when we arranged to be picked up by water taxi for lunch that Gabriel was the one who came to pick us up. If you need a place to go to break up the monotony of all-inclusive food, this is the place.
Great place especially if you have an all inclusive package and want to escape the resort fare. Fresh seafood with an Italian twist prepared and served by some very friendly folks. Gabriel and his wife were super as a previous reviwer noted. It costs a few bucks each way to take a taxi and is well worth it. 40USDpp with wine and a cocktail.
My husband and I just returned from our stay in Punta Cana. The food at our resort was horrible and we had read the reviews on Jelly Fish and decided to go for dinner one evening. They had the best Pina Colada ever made. Dinner was fantastic! I had the sea bass, my husband had the mahi mahi – a couple we went with had the Cajun shrimp and pasta. Everything was delicious! For us, the bill was $25 per person which included 2 drinks each. We didn’t think this was outrageous at all. Then when we had trouble getting a cab to pick us up to return us to our resort, the owners graciously called a friend to get us back. It was so great that we walked over an hour 2 days later to go back for lunch! Would be a shame to miss this great restaurant on your visit to Punta Cana.
South Coast
Sporting Club (on the beach about 1/2 mile west of the Hamaca)
Darren's Portofino Restaurant & Beach Club Bar: We had a very nice and
inexpensive meal there. Darren is from Boston and one of his workers, Roy,
is from Gloucester. It was also nice to talk to someone from our area. They
serve on the street in front of the restaurant, in the bar-restaurant inside,
on the patio outside, or on the beach. As you walk into Boca Chica, it's the
first major restaurant on the left. The address is Calle Duarte #32 and the
telephone number is (809) 523-4660; fax 523-4444.
Stayed at the Boca Chica Resort The real find in Boca Chica, however, was DaNancy restaurant near the
Hamaca resort. Both nights there we found the place packed with upscale
Dominicans and very few tourists. Nancy (owner and chef) offers a free
appetizers table and very reasonable prices for her excellent food. The
grilled shrimp and lobster were about half the price of the more famous
Neptunos restaurant. Our checks for four of us with a cocktail each,
two bottles of wine, dinner, tax, and tip ran about $20 per person.
Most entrees are in the $8-10 range. Get there before the place is
discovered!
La Langouste de Co Zet 852-5738
Stayed at the Colonia Tropical The restaurants we tried in Juan Dolio were: Café Real, Tango, Guiglia's Café, Il Pisano and El Caribe. They all served good food. The prices are comparable to what you pay in Canada. The cheapest item on the menu is usually salad, pizza and spaghetti in tomato sauce. Café Real had the best pizza, Tango served great steaks, everything we tried at Guiglia's was great (I think it was the only place that served hamburgers, other than at our hotel, and they were good) and Il Pisano had lovely pasta. El Caribe catered mostly to the locals with excellent Dominican food and cheap! And, the beer was always ice cold everywhere we went!
The bars were Mata Pollo, Bar Boulevard and an unnamed place that was next to a gift shop (next door to the post office). Mata Pollo was fun, never got crowded, but always someone playing at the two pool tables. The bartender is the DJ and the music was always great. Some locals and tourists. Bar Boulevard caters more to the local crowd, always full, pool tables and latino music. The unnamed bar only had four tables, plus the bar, but it was nice sitting underneath the canopy watching the world go by. The cheapest beer in town was had here for $2. The latino music (especially the bachate beat) by the way is wonderful. You can't help but want to get up and move and the Dominicans almost always sing along to whatever is playing! All of them could be recording artists themselves! We almost never heard any North American pop music - it was a great break!
