The balmy climate with it's ever-present trade winds and the warm temperature of the Atlantic Ocean combine to give this part of the island year-round, delightful weather with only a few degrees difference in temperature between winter and summer.
In addition to a number of new all-inclusive hotels in the area, there are also many small non-inclusive hotels. Hotels are mainly located in Samana City, Las Galeras (25 kms. from Samana City), Las Terrenas, El Portillo, Cozon and Playa Bonita areas. Samana has a distinct European flavor and many have opened up businesses to cater to tourists in the area, including many good restaurants.

The opening of the Samana Airport in November of 2006 has increased accessibility to this beautiful area, with most hotels within an hour’s drive of the airport. Samana is located 2-1/2 hours from Puerto Plata, 4-1/2 hours from Santo Domingo, and 3-1/2 hours from Punta Cana.

Samana Peninsula is characterized by many unspoiled white sandy beaches, lush tropical forests, tall coconut trees, green mountains, and is dotted with little towns, such as Sánta Barbara de Samaná, (Samana City), El Limón, Las Galeras and Las Terrenas. ). Cayo Levantado is a small island (1 square kilometer) off of Samana with lovely white sand beaches flanked by palm trees, and is a popular day trip for tourists. There are also a couple of hotels on Cayo Levantado.

Hidden towns and fishing villages, brightly painted Dominican homes and a Mediterranean-influenced atmosphere characterise the communities here. Dominating the interior are mountain passes negotiated by winding roads that offer magnificent views, lush vegetation and cool waterfalls

Attractions include El Limon Waterfall, which is approximately 300 metres above sea level and has a 40 metre drop that ends in a pool of clear water, Los Haitises National Park and El Salton del Limas.

Samana’s north coastline is a scuba diver’s dream – sheer drop-offs and pinnacles that rise from 165 feet to within 15 feet of the surface. Underwater visibility can range from 100 to 150 feet.

Experience the world-renowned spectacle of whale-watching, where humpback whales gather in the turquoise waters during mating season (mid January to mid March). Boat excursions take groups out to witness these incredible creatures frolicking in the sea.

Whether you are looking to go hiking or mountain biking, horseback riding, motorcycle riding, whale-watching, scuba diving, snorkelling, swimming or simply relaxing, in Samana you can do it all.
