The rooms were your typical hotel room. The bathrooms were a little run down. The bath tubs very high (be careful getting out). The safe box didn't work. They didn't have robe and slippers as promised on web site. They didn't have decaf coffee.
The doctor on resort will charge for any kind of treatment. I wanted a band aid and maybe some peroxide and she told me $125.00. UNREAL!!!!!!
The grounds...TARANTULA'S all over at night. VERY SCARY!!!!
The pool area was nice if you like people having sex in the pool. They were escorted and the man jumped in the pool and they wrapped a towel around him because he was naked. SO DISGUSTING!!!!!!!! Children were in the pool when this happened (WELL IT IS A FAMILY RESORT).
THE NIGHT CLUB (DESIRES) ...They have porn on the TV and they have strippers that actually show their privates and no one does a thing about it. WE TRIED TELLING THE GUARD AT THE DOOR AND HE DIDN'T UNDERSTAND ENGLISH. Fights broke out in disco, glasses and bottles being broke right outside the disco and people drunk. This place was so out of control.
THE SECURITY WALKS AROUND WITH SHOTGUNS. OMG!!!!! I thought this was all a nightmare and would wake soon and be in my bed, but it wasn't. THE MANAGEMENT DOESN’T HELP AT ALL AND ARE VERY NASTY. RANDOLF DECENA is a nasty manager and said he is the owner, but i don't know how true that is. HE DID NOTHING ABOUT THE SITUATIONS. MANUEL CARBAJO also acts like a manager and Juan Liberato Almanzar said he is the general manager. SO I ASKED "WILL THE REAL GENERAL MANAGER PLEASE STAND" because they all say "OH YOU SHOULD HAVE COME TO ME", BUT WHEN YOU DO THEY SEND YOU TO SOMEONE ELSE. Regional manager was...JAVIER STERICH and he was no where to be found for a week. THIS PLACE IS RUN BY A BUNCH OF WANNA BE'S AND DO ABSOLUTELY NOTHING ABOUT ANYTHING.
THE DOCTOR...DR DE LUNA- Well, i don't even know what to say, but if you are going to dreams (nightmare) with your children please think twice because if your child gets hurt you may have a hard time getting treated unless you have a lot of cash to cough-up. PLEASE BE AWARE of this place. it is the most horrific place I’ve ever been to and i travel a lot. I never had to write reviews on any place i have ever been...even days inns are better than this place. I WAS NEVER SO HAPPY TO SEE USA!!!! IF swapping, sex in the pool and sex in discos is your thing then this is the place for you.
UNBELIEVABLE!!!!

Sub par AKA bad/terrible/not worth the money

I am here right now on 30 may 2011. Previous reviews only reflect the past standard of the resort. The people are very hospitable, and the architecture of the resort itself is pretty; however, the food at all the restaurants is sub par AKA bad/terrible/not worth the money.. Since the resort is isolated away from the airport and all the other resorts the problem is that this resort has no method of getting fresh ingredients and so the food is bad. On Saturday I tried the so called Japanese steakhouse--terrible experience. The Oceana --the food is bland and not a good reflection of a seafood restaurant which is odd since you are RIGHT BESIDE the ocean. Additionally, since the food sucks and the rooms dont have Air Conditioning that functions properly you cannot escape the resort because anything away from it is at least a 45 minute drive and by taxi that would be over 100 bucks per person. Within the resort the stores are a rip off. I just bought off-bug spray and some bananqa boat cheap sunblock for 45US dollars. F-ing highway robbery. Want a real vacation go to Mexico Bahia Principe Gran Tulum. Skip right over this place. Save your money. Our travel agent at Harvest Travel in Baltimore lied. This place blows. Additionally, we bought the VIP premium suites package and your only bonus with that is access to a building with air conditioning. Everything else sucks. Run away do not go here. Don't believe me. Feel free to ask anyone else that has been here this month May 2011. ---You were warned. Disgruntled customer

Your Arrival:
Safe. We arrived at the airport and were stopped to pay an entrance fee of $15 per person, cash only. 15 feet beyond this "booth" was a second "booth" where you turned in the tourist tickets for which you had just paid $15 per person. Why, exactly, do they waste the paper and our time rather than just collecting the cash an letting us pass through. We were lead to a van, uur luggage loaded, and we climbed on board. 10 minutes later, we were asked to identify our luggage so that it could be moved, along with us, to a second van. The first one had apparently changed course already. The driver was pleasant, and the 50 minute drive was uneventful.

Rooms:
First, let me tell you that I reserved our room in the preferred club, so that we would receive the best treatment and have ou own concierge. The room that I had booked for my two teens and I was supposed to have 2 queen beds. The room we were given had 1 king bed. Not acceptable. The other choices I was given were a tiny room with two full beds, or I could pay another $700 to "upgrade" to a room with 1 king, which I shared with my daughter, and a pull out chair, which became my son's bed. I hate to think about the rooms that are not in the preferred club. We had ants in the bathroom sink all week. Never resolved. We had water dripping from our ceiling. Resolved within hours. There were no screens on our patio door or windows. Never resolved. The patio door lock was broken. Never resolved. The refrigerator in the room never actually got cold. Never resolved. The bathroom light bulb burned out and for some reason could not be replaced until mid-morning. Showered in the dark. Several times a day the power to the room would go out for a few minutes at a time. Okay...that was the room.

Restaurants and Bars:
Food at or below average. The buffet did not change from day to day and the food was never worthy of the walk to dinner. The Japanese restaurant rated an average. The Mexican restaurant left me wondering what about it was Mexican.

Beach/Pools/Grounds:
The beach is very small. The pool is only 3 feet deep. Everywhere. The ocean was green, not the expected blue, and the caution flags on the beach remained up for our entire trip. Some days you could not go in the water, and other days you could go in if you were "cautious". None of the water activities were do-able due to the beach cautions. If you want to sit like a blob, it was perfect.

Activities on and off the Resort/Hotel:
Nothing was nearby off the resort. The excursions appeared to be greatly over-priced and just not worth it. If you were at a beach resort where you should be able to go in the ocean, why pay more to be bussed to another resort to do the same thing? The CORE zone was a joke. No one was ever there other than the 1-2 employees who were assigned to the area. No one offered to let you participate in any of the activities, such as the rock climbing wall or the archery. It seemed to be too much of a bother for the employees to get off of their chairs and set anything up.

Other Comments:
Okay, I may be at times thrifty, but seriously...$52 dollars for 2 bottles of sunscreen and some aloe when our stash from home ran out?? I guess they know that there is no other place to shop, so they stick it to you big time!

Arrival: November 23, 2009 to November 27, 2009
I would never return to Punta Cana. The concierge was not very helpful.

Rooms:
The air conditioning was very low and could not raise it. The refrigerator did not keep the drinks cold. There were ants in the room. There were tissues stuffed in the ceiling where there were holes. They did not replenish the wash clothes each day. The bath tub was ridiculously high. They only have less than half of the shower with glass, so while you are taking a showew the floor gets soaked. I got out one time and the mat went out from under me and I fell on the floor hard. I would like to know how senior citizens got into the tubs. Also there are no handles to hold on to. The ceiling fan wobbled like crazy. We were afraid it was going to drop. But you had to keep it on because that is the only cool feeling you felt.

Restaurants and Bars:
The only edible restaurant was the buffet. All the other specialized restaurants were terrible. The beef was disgusting. They need more vegetables.

Beach/Pools/Grounds:
Pools were nice. Where paid extra for swim-out rooms. The waiting staff did not come over to our side of the pool to see what we wanted to drink. They only stayed on the other side. Also, we had to vie for rafts. Instead of having one for each person they had a selected few. So we had to take they into our room at night so that we would have them the next day. People were trying to take our chairs from the front of room.

Activities on and off the Resort/Hotel:
Signed up for a shopping tour which costs us $35.00. They would not cash our traveler's checks. The Hotel wanted to charge a 10% fee to cash the traveler's checks. We finally found a market that would take our traveler's checks. Also, there was supposed to be free snorkling and parasailing. But they did not tell you they had to take you by boat to the caribbean side of the island and that would cost you $70.00 per person. What a scam.

Other Comments:
Also, they should tell you there is a casino there. The casino is a joke. There were maybe about 20 slot machines and 3 tables. They should call it a game room for adults.

My advice to anyone thinking of going to Dreams Punta Cana is DON’T! We paid substantially more for the preferred club and that is a scam. We were not alone in that we paid for an upgrade and received a mediocre room facing a piece of the pool. Some guests we met with no upgrade had better rooms than we did. We were not alone either. We met and spoke to guests whom had paid large for upgrades, and were given rooms with 2 twin beds rather than king beds and were way back on the resort from the ocean. I requested a better room and they said no, but on our second week when the resort was only about half full they offered us an upgrade to fully face the pool for $100 USD a day. We said no thanks. Our bathroom ceiling leaked on several occasions and we had to have it fixed, the water was forever dripping down the wall in the bathroom behind the toilet. We were sure that eventually mold would be forming. The toilet ran regularly. Non-preferred members regularly used the beds on the beach for the preferred customers. Raphael on the beach was great and really took care of us, but when people refused to move whom were not preferred, the resort did not back him up and those people stayed. As well, the beds on the beach were an eyesore. They take up a great deal of space on the beach and block the view of the guests sitting in the preferred area on chairs. There were nowhere near enough shelters and chairs for the non-preferred so many sat in our area in an effort to get their children and themselves out of the hot sun. The water is a lot rougher there as it’s on the Atlantic side and there are tons of large rocks making walking and swimming difficult. As well, any water sports they provide they have to bus you to another beach and that includes the banana boat rides etc. Of course due to the rough water and rocks. As for food, the buffet is the best. The Italian is awful. They had actually had the pasta sitting in the bowl, poured some sort of chef boy are de (sp) sauce on it and nuked it. My husband’s food was supposed to contain diced tomatoes in it. There was no such thing. Last and certainly not least, as is the disease of the Dominican, is the pushy rude people harassing every guest regularly about going to a so called 90 minute presentation off the resort to buy time share. This is something you do not want to do!!! It actually takes close to a day according to the guests that got roped in and the sales people are incredibly aggressive. If a so called high end resort like Dreams has leaking ceilings, curtains hung with loose bits of wood and according to an electrician we met who attempted to remove a light bulb from his balcony light, very scary electrical work, would you want to invest thousands of your hard earned dollars on a condo there, NOT!! What was good about it, the staff, the gym, the spa and the buffet.

Room Block:
building 1

Arrival:
February 2012

Restaurants and Bars:
Italian was bad! Buffet was the best.

Beach/Pools/Grounds:
Nicely kept.

My husband and I arrived on feb8 by air canada, which was terrible,to say the least, no food, two glasses of tomato juice, to dreams punta cana. This is our eighth year consecutively visiting the DR, and one of the worst trips we have ever taken. We usually stay in five star resorts, as this was listed, and usually upgrade when we arrive. Upon arrival the room that we booked wasnt available, and it was well after 4 pm. Front desk staff were totally not helpful when wanting to upgrade to the preferred club. Took almost 5 hours to get us a room, and when we paid the additional 560. us dollars, they finally gave us a key and said walk to the room and the luggage will be brought up. The room was horrifying, old dated, tub/shower together, tiles missing, ceiling hanging, etc.... , we went immediately up to the front desk again to ask to see the room that we had given up, seeing the seedy one was the upgrade, and the front desk person all the sudden didnt speak english anymore..... After having a tearful breakdown, and management noticing , a gent came over and asked what the problem was , and I relayed our problem. Turns out the frontdesk man took our money didnt give us the upgrade, as they can tell because the preferred club has black key cards. He hadnt offered us any information with regards to the benefits of the upgrade because i am sure he intended to keep the money and send us packing hoping we didnt know what to expect. We were then told to follow the gent and he led us to a suite in building nine which he said was a time share suite. It was beautiful, clean, spacious, etc. and we left the room to go find a place to eat as we had not eaten for 14 hours. The first two restaurants we went to gave us plastic pucks, to wait for our table, which we later thought were a great idea, but on that night, ten at night, was very annoying to us as starving people cannot eat plastic pucks!!

Room Number:
9211

Arrival:
We arrived at 4 pm, no cold drink offered while waiting for our room , that was not ready, even though check out is 11 am. Only one other couple checking in at the same time, their swim up room was not available and they were given a honeymoon suite in place of it. Paid 80 dollars per night for room/service upgrade and eventually , five hours later were given our room. It was a suite on the second floor of building nine, facing the pool , with a full deck, hot tub. the room was excellent.

Rooms:
The room was very clean, a couple of the lamps didnt work, other than that it was excellent. No robes, one pair of slippers, no big deal, although we did call for a robe for hubby as i had one and using the hottub required one.

Restaurants and Bars:
the restaurants and bars were all excellent. Clean, great staff, excellent food and presentation The coffee boy at the oceanic restaurant is a must, he is very entertaining!!! We tried the Oceanic, the Chinese, Japenese, the Mexican and the world Buffet, all were very, very good. They give you a puck if there is no seating, and ask you to have a seat at the bar and when your table is ready the puck lights up and your table is ready. No reservations necessary and very efficient. The staff in these restaurants went above and beyond to make your dining experience complete and wonderful. Cannot say enough about the service.

Beach/Pools/Grounds:
Beach was nice, clean, adequate chairs etc The pool area was clean, pool too, although seating around the pool was always hard to get. Poeple out 6 am to put towels, books and stuff on chairs, which was very maddening, because almost everyday we would take one of the marked seats as there were none to be had, and only once did the person that had their stuff on it ever come back, greedy people who put towels on chairs in both the beach and pool, then dont come back to use them. Even the floats in the pool were supposed to be left in the water for everyones use, and you would see people putting them up with their stuff, and not allowing others to make use of them.

Other Comments:
The only thing we would stress to not do , is pay for the upgrade to the preferred club, there is absolutely no bang for the buck. Only got the service when we asked for it, and then didnt really get what you would expect. Turn down service only happened periodically, no paper in the room,no upgraded mini bar, until we asked for it, no snacks in the room, till we asked for them. Overall the preferred club was not preferred. I dont like to complain, but when they advertise a service and you pay to get it and dont, it leaves a very sour taste in your mouth, and a bad impression on the plave you visit.

I like to check hotel reviews before I go somewhere and every time I read a negative review, I try to take it with a grain of salt. I realize that you can't please everyone every time. I'm also pretty easygoing when I travel and up until now, I've always had a positive experience so I was really surprised by the service we received at this resort and the resort itself. We were traveling in a group (mostly family), to attend my niece's wedding. This resort is rated 4.5 - 5 stars and with that kind of rating, there are certain expectations. Let me just say this - if you're a beach person, i.e. you enjoy swimming in the ocean (not just laying out in the sun), then this is not the place for you!

Arrival:
Our experience at the airport and during transit to the resort was fine - we didn't have to wait very long and we only made one other stop before arriving at Dreams. The ride from the airport to the resort takes a good hour, however, on very bumpy roads, so if you are prone to car-sickness, you're going to find the ride long.

Checking in at the hotel was not so pleasant. For the first time in my many years of traveling, we arrived at the resort, proceeded to the check-in desk and were told that two of our reservations had been cancelled! We tried to explain that this was impossible and that we had booked way back in February and had purchased a package deal (flight AND hotel) so that if we had cancelled anything, we would not have been able to even get on the plane. They were not very sympathetic and they refused to give us a room until they could confirm that they were going to be paid. This meant that they made us stay in their lobby for over two hours, while they figured it out, and all this time, they kept blaming our travel agency - they never accepted responsibility for anything. Luckily, the bride and groom had no problem checking in but they were really upset that we were being treated this way. After repeating for over two hours that they didn't have any free rooms, they finally found some but we were told that only one had two double beds - two of us would have to share a bed for the night but they promised to change our room the following day.

Rooms:
The room we were given with the one bed (building 4, 2nd floor) was far from being 5-star quality, to say the least. It was dirty, full of bugs and there were holes in the bathroom ceiling. Also, the fridge was warm, the TV didn't work and neither did the safe (this meant we had to keep our valuables with us the entire time). It was also very dated and it hasn't been renovated in years. Thinking that it was only going to be for the one night, we sucked it up and settled into bed only to be rudely awakened at 2 a.m. by our arguing neighbours. Alot of the bedrooms have adjoining doors, which we discovered are paper thin. We were kept awake for over three hours while the couple next door were having "words".

In order to get moved to another room (with two beds) the next day, our Air Canada Vacations rep had to intervene and had she not done so, we would have had to stay in the dirty room. I listened to her and the reception clerk argue back and forth and although I'm not fluent in Spanish, I understood enough to get that they did not want to move us. They finally agreed and the second room we were given (building 5, 3rd floor) was much better - still pretty outdated with the decor, but it was clean, everything worked and being on the 3rd floor, it was fairy quiet.

I was still pretty upset that we had had to fight to get this room and they never apologized or offered any compensation - even after our Air Canada Vacations rep confirmed that all their records were fine - it was the resort's mistake about the cancellation.

Restaurants and Bars:
One good thing to say about this resort is that you don't have to make reservations for the à-la-carte restaurants and you can go as many times as you like. Our experience at the French, Japanese, Chinese and Seaside Grill were very nice. The food was delicious and the staff delightful. The main buffet was fine and there were always plenty of options.

Beach/Pools/Grounds:
Like I said earlier, this resort is not for beach-lovers. In fact, it is very dangerous to swim in the ocean - the current is very strong and the water is murky so you can't see the bottom, which is covered in rocks and coral. I attempted to venture in (carefully) and left 15 minutes later with a bloody knee. Even if some reviewers recommend going a bit to the left of the resort, we didn't find an area completely clear of any rocks - you thought you were fine and then the current would pull you into a rocky area.

The one thing I did enjoy about the beach was that there were plenty of chairs, palapas and palm trees so if you need to take cover from the sun, there is plenty of room to go. The beds on the beach are also fun, if you can get one.

The pool is probably the best part of the resort and it is huge so you never feel crowded. There are also plenty of chairs all around and plenty of shady areas if needed. It is a struggle to get in, however, if you are vertically-challenged like myself as there are very few stairs - only a few areas with a ledge you can lower yourself onto before dropping to the pool.

Activities on and off the Resort/Hotel:
A few us of took a catamaran ride, which was nice but it was not ideal for snorkeling - the water was very murky so it was hard to see anything and the coral isn't as colorful as in other Caribbean countries. Also, the current was so strong, I was exhausted after a few minutes and had a hard time getting back to the boat.

Other family members went horseback riding and had a great time.

Other Comments:
Had it not been for the beautiful wedding we attended and spending some quality time with family and friends, I would have been extremely disappointed with this vacation. I would not return to this resort and would not recommend it to anyone. I prefer staying at a resort on Bavaro beach - it may be crowded in some areas, but the water is divine for swimming. I may sound fussy, but for my hard-earned money, I prefer clear, turquoise waters and white sand when I go on vacation!

I was very disappointed to find out that so many of my guest who had traveled to DR for my wedding got sick. When they returned home and got tested by their doctors they had food poison. A good portion of the trip they spent in the bathroom throwing up or with diarrhea. Not to mention the rooms smelled horrible..mold..mildew..the maid told them "we don't usually use these rooms.
The staff was friendly. The pool should remain open a little longer than 6pm. Trolly or shuttle cars need to be available for elderly folks who can't walk from the lobby to the beach area.
I felt so bad that out of 100 guest more than 50% of them got sick, as the bride who selected Dreams I feel horrible for my guest.

We had a great time until one of the staff stole from us. They took jewelry from our room. We reported this to all concerned and after some idle threats, we got our stuff back. Treated badly by security at the resort, like we were the criminals here. Told this rarely happens, and we witnessed several such altercations with other guests. We reported this to management and our travel agent. Dreams Resorts as well as the provider did nothing to reimburse or do anything to make us feel any better about this. We will never visit the Dominican ever again. The general public needs to know that this must happen alot down there.

Take plenty of tums and pepto bismol. Both my mom and I went to this resort and we both got sick. We only drank bottled water the entire time we were there. We also didn't over eat or drink more than our usual consumption of alcohol. Everyone that went on the charter flight with us and stayed at the same hotel said a few people from each of the members of their party got sick with the same stomach virus we did. PS-Take hand sanitizer since your breakfast will be buffet style every day.

Also, if you don't like to be hot and sweaty..this is not the place for you. The "air conditioning" in the rooms are just to take away some of the humidity. It doesn't offer any areas with real air conditioning, so plan on being in the pool most of the time. All of the restaurants are open air restaurants.

I will say that even though we did get sick, we did enjoy the hotel offerings. We did enjoy the variety of restaurants. The staff was friendly and accomodating. We did the Marinarium excursion which was totally worth the cost!!! Make sure to do this excursion within the first day or two of your stay so you are not too sick to enjoy it.

For me, the next time I go to the carribean will be on a cruise with air and less chance of getting a stomach virus from the food.

The rooms were very clean, but not well maintained. The fridge and safe were broke. The door handle for the bathroom door fell off and was never fixed. Also our fan was wired wrong and was pulling the air up rather than pushing it down.

Restaurants and Bars:
The restaurants and bars were very nice. The Oceana restaurant didn't have many seafood options even though they were a seafood rest. I think all of the restaurants were trying to accomodate all of the tastes in the party.

Beach/Pools/Grounds:
The beach was not good. I would not recommend this for anyone who loves to hang out on the beach. Our Apple Vacations representative even told us when we arrived that the beach in front of the resort was not good for swimming, but if you went down to the left of this area, it would be good swimming. The water in front of the hotel looked like the Jersey Shore.

I will say everything was kept very clean by all of the staff they had working all day long.

Activities on and off the Resort/Hotel:
The nightly entertainment was good for all ages. I would definitely recommend the excursions that they have to offer!

Other Comments:
If you are looking for a great pool to hang out in. This would be the one. But remember, wake up early so you can get a chair. Also, bring your own inflatable pool toys because people don't share very well.
