When you go to Dominican Republic it is fun and interesting to do some tours and excursions. Many travelers stay in an all inclusive hotel and do not leave the resort grounds and beach. There is so much more to do and see than just the offer in your resort.

Beside enjoying the sun, beach, the warmth and excitement which is embedded in the Latin culture and mingling with the Dominican people, you have the possibility to partake in a variety of tours, attractions and excursions while on your vacation.

Debbie’s offers a large number of Tour and Excursion reviews. Here you can read the experiences of fellow travelers who sent us their Tour and Excursion reviews, which can assist you while planning your activities during your stay in the Dominican Republic. Zip Line Adventure

April 2009
We had wanted to go Ziplining, but I required a pair of close-toed shoes for that, and neglected to pack any... so off to the plaza to drop over $50 for shoes.... yes, they're nice and I'll wear them again.... but a little pricey... So we went Ziplining!!! What a blast! Our drivers name was Manuel, and man, can he drive and navigate those bumpy, windy roads!! Kudos to him! Our tour rep was Pedro..he was great! He told us information on the area and the people on our drive to the mountains for Ziplining! He was very friendly and full of knowledge! They take great care in doing the ziplining as far as safety and procedures are concerned... You really should check out the website for it to see the video and pictures, but it's a lot of fun, and really safe!.. try to go in the morning though, as the afternoon would get pretty hot out there.. The drive through the country side and the small towns was interesting as well.. and Pedro would tell us about all the different vegetation, and we even tried unripened, or not dried, coacoa beans!... All Hail chocolate!! All in all it was a nice break, good to get away from the resort for a bit. we hear the Bavaro Runners Safari Adventure is a good tour as well... maybe next time!??!

This was an awesome zipline adventure. Other people were concerned with storied that they had heard about these and I am an extra paranoid person. Everything was done well and we were trained on safety before we got near the ziplines. I would recommend this one to anyone. Lots of people from different ages were with our group and we agreed it was a great time.

We did the zip lining offered with Bavaro tours. This was AMAZING! There is a bus that comes to pick you up, then goes to other resorts to pick up other people for your tour. The ziplining is held up in the mountains so it's about 1.5hrs or so to drive up there. It's great to go through the communities and farmland and see how the locals live. I would absolutely recommend this tour. The employees are VERY knowledgeable and very reassuring. One person who went with us was terrified of heights, but they did a great job talking to her and calming her down so that she could get the confidence to do the ziplining which was very rewarding. Soon there will be longer ziplines to go on in the next few months, so I can't wait to go back!

This was so much fun! I was a little scared at first but after the first platform it was a breeze. The staff really know what they are doing, no worries in that department at all. I will do this tour again the next I am in Punta Cana; it is well worth the money and a great experience. Actually we were told after the tour that they are looking into adding more platforms, higher and longer…can’t wait!

We went on the Bavaro Zipline Adventure It was awesome. They were very safe and nice. Our guide that rode the bus with us to the Zip line place was named Stevenson. He gave lots of information and helped reassure the little ones that were going on the zip line that it was very safe.

I had a wonderful experience in spending a half-day on a split-charter with Mike's crew!!!! I booked it two months in advance via internet and everything came off without a flaw - the ride picked me up at the hotel right on time and we had a great group of people from several hotels with us. The crew put us on the fish within an hour of leaving the dock and we started the day with 3 fish on at the same time. I have to say that the First Mate was professional and did a great job coordinating bringing each fish aboard. I was able to land a 53" mahi-mahi or Dorado that took me about 15 minutes to reel in. I took plenty of pictures and measured the fish so that I can order a reproduction back in the states to hang in my office. I think you will find this outfit to be extremely reliable and spot-on with customer service, even with one or two people doing the "pray for fish" or "chumming" over the side. Make sure you take your dramamine two hours before you hit the boat.

Just a quick review, my husband and son were picked up at 7:30am from our resort on Feb.23 2009. Took an hour and half to get to the boat after many stops. They didnt even have a bite for 4 hours. They were told they were to get beer but only had rum on board. After no luck fishing they had to drive the hour and half back. Wasted the whole day and there is no guarantee. It costs $115 US and they dont even refund half. I wouldnt recommend it. There is cheaped fishing charters in DR and if you arent going to catch anything at least you dont feel ripped off. Good Luck.

We took a charter out from Mike’s Marina on our visit to Punta Cana in January. We had a great time even though the seas were rough and the fish weren’t very hungry. The boat was very well kept and the crew attentive. They really worked hard so we could catch a fish. We had several bites, one of which actually bit through the line!!! There was one fish caught that day a Mahi Mahi. We highly recommend Mike’s Marina for charter fishing. They boats are nice and the crew is great, so is Mike.

The main trip we took was with Mike Fisher from here at Debbies... This was one of the most memorable trips we have had. Not just because of the sailfish we caught, but because of Mike's expertise, courtesty, friendship and his experienced crews. Would definitely do this trip everytime we are there without hesitation!

Hats off to Capt Julio and his mate Luis for all their hard work! What a day of fishing! Non stop action from the time we left the marina! Less than an hour into our charter we had Marlin on our tail! We had the first Marlin on board shortly after that! About an hour later we were into the dorado! We hooked up with 5 all at the same time! The lines were smokin'! Action packed to say the least and we managed to keep all the lines untangled! An hour later we had our second Marlin of the day! Now with two Marlin and five dorado one would call that a super day of fishing but wait.......we hooked into the THIRD Marlin of the day! WOW! What a very special day on the water! We trolled for about two more hours and Luis thought we had a wahoo hit one of the lines but missed the hook! Quite frankly, the boys from Iowa were wore out from all the reeling on this day! You most definately topped our Cabo San Lucas trip! Thanks again for an awesome fishing adventure! We will no doubt book with you on our next trip and HIGHLY recommend you and your crew! Thanks Again to Mike, Julio and Luis for all your hard work!

We just wanted to tell you Thank You for the terrific time we had on the OGB. We also want to give a Big Thank You to Julio (our captain) and Luis (our deckhand). They were great. It was our second day on the boat and we were already 3 hours into our 4 hour trip. We had given up and were satisfied that we still enjoyed our time. But then Luis yells up to Julio to turn the boat and head in the direction he was pointing. Boy he had some good eyes that day. As we hit the location Luis pointed at, we hit not one and not two but three Fish On. I do love my husband as it was already decided that I would get to reel in the first fish. Thanks to the reel chair I reeled in two before he reeled in one. I know, I know, I had the advantage. As you can see in the pictures, we had a great time. Anyone planning on going fishing while in Punta Cana, I would highly recommend Mike's Marina. Our crew continuiouly changed the bait and scouted for fish the entire time we were out at sea. We are already planning a two week vacation in December and can't wait to fish with them again. Again, Thank you Mike, Julio and Luis Joanna & Ken Wallace Las Vegas, NV

I wanted to share with you my experience in DR. We had a week planned at the Club Med in Punta Cana. Our stay was great. Before we left I scheduled a four hour charter fishing trip with Mike's for the family. The price was steep at $650 for four hours but I was convinced that it would be a wonderful experience for my wife and two children. We were picked up at the hotel promptly at 8:00 and arrived at the marina shortly after where we were greeted by Mike. We had two crew members (Julio and Julio) who could speak very little English. Overall we had a four hour boat ride as we did not catch a thing. I am well aware that this is a risk. However, at $650 I had to say this was the largest disappointment of the weeks trip to DR. Upon our return we were just told sorry and put on a van to return to Club Med. Very disappointing experience.

Mike, my wife and I had a great time on your charter. I caught a 45lbs. Dorado and my wife caught one that was 80lbs. My only complaint was at the end they wouldn?t give me the fish to take home. When I asked one of your Captains he told me that it wasn?t his decision. I would suggest that you let people know that up front, because I have chartered many other places in the world and never had that happen to me before. That almost ruined my trip, but if I would have known it up front I still would have fished with your company. In other words, I felt deceived and that was too bad. I hope this gives you perspective of an honest customer

Mikesmarina - booked before I left - they picked my son and husband up from the beach. My son is 6 and this is his third time with Mikes Marina. This year he caught a barracuda. His friend caught a grouper and apparently a couple big ones got away!!!! This is his high light every year. Now you have to know I walked down the beach and was late coming back. So we usually do catch and release. My son was so excited that he saved the fish. When I came back from my walk and into the resort he pulled the fish from under his chair and ran to me!! Everyone was laughing! I was glad! Because him running with that fish will be a laughable memory I will never forget! Thanks Mike! like usual your the best!!!

What a great time we had ! Everything was top quality, right from the boat and equipment to your very experienced first mate and captain. The crew worked so very hard to make the trip so memorable for all of us - we had a lot of fun ! This excursion was certainly the highlight of our trip - and to land a wahoo and a king mackerel was the bonus !! Thank you for being able to accommodate us - we all had such a great time.

The reason why I returned to Mike's Marina is that I really get to enjoy myself. I don't have to worry about anything. I don't have to worry about getting to my hotel from the airport. The hotel accomodations are really nice and the people are friendly. The location is pretty. I had fun hanging out at the bar where I met new people. The fishing was a blast. Besides the fishing drinks and snacks were provided. As I said, I didn't have to worry about anything. All I had to do was relax and have a great time. And Mike is a really great guy!

My wife and I just wanted to report back on our experience we had fishing with Mike’s Marina. The pressure to go fishing with other companies is great. Everyone wants you to go fishing with them and they will lower their rates to make it very tempting. However, we took the advice from Pete’s web site “Punta Cana Information Guide” to only go with Mike’s Marina even if they hold to a higher price. We are so glad we did. While the other fishing companies may take you for a fun trip out into the ocean, Mike’s Marina employ dedicated fishermen who want to catch a fish just a much as you do. We were there to catch fish and with Mike’s you get what you pay for. If we wanted a fun tour of the ocean we would have booked the sunset cruise with the Hotel. We are proud to say that Mike’s did what they setout to do. We caught in just a 4 hour trip: a dorado and a huge blue marlin (192” and 180Lbs). The experience was one we will never forget and made our first trip to the Dominican absolutely legendary. My sincere thanks to the crew aboard the Shekinah (Manuel and Catch) as well as everyone at Mikes Marina that where so accommodating, helpful and professional. We will go with Mike’s the next time we go back to Punta Cana and know that we will have a wonderful experience as a result.
Just a tip to a the skeptics: If you’re still not sure which fishing company to go with just spend a few days on the beach, as I did, watching the fishing boats come in. When a fishing boat catches a fish the crew will proudly put a small color-coded flag up to indicate what and how many fish were caught on that particular trip. You’ll notice a trend as I did. Mikes ships are pretty much the only ones with flags coming in to the marina with very few exceptions. The hotel bookings never reported success during my two week stay.

I wanted to send a note about my great experience fishing with Mike in Punta Cana. I had a great time and was very impressed with the all of the services that Mike provided. Mike took care of every little detail from picking up and dropping off at the airport, letting me use his computer for emailing at his office, picking me up and dropping me off for fishing, taking great pictures and emailing them too me after the trip, and making himself available to make my experience as enjoyable as possible. The fishing was great also! I had a blast fishing with Mike, Captain Manuel, and mate Catch. They were all friendly, accommodating, very knowledgeable, and professional. I think they were more excited than me (which I didn't think was possible), when I caught my first ever marlin. I can't wait to come back!

My son and I recently took a trip along with his friend and his father to punta cana specifically to charter a boat for a fishing trip. After reviewing numerous charter options I chose Mike from Mike's Marina to service us for three days of fishing for white and blue marlin. Mike assured me that he would take care of transportation to and from airport/hotel and to the charter boat.

From the moment we arrived off the plane Mike and his driver Richard were there awaiting our arrival. Without hesitation we loaded our bags and were off on a safe ride to our resort. Not once were we dissapointed with the transportation, his drivers were always on time from the beginning to the end of our trip in Punta Cana.

We charted one of Mike's 42 foot boats for three days with the same captain and first mate throughout. Like all of Mike's workers they were very friendly and accomodating, speaking English to us and making sure that we were comfortable. Within three beautiful days on Mike's boat we caught Blue Marlin, White Marlin, and Mahi Mahi.

All four of us were totally satisfied with Mike's service. We are now planning another trip to Punta Cana to again fish with Mike's Marina in a Blue Marlin Fishing Tournement in August. I would recommend Mike's Marina to anyone looking to go fishing in Punta Cana. Whether you are looking to take just a days trip out on one of the boats or planning your trip around fishing, Mike's Marina is your best bet. Not only did he provide us with an outstanding and successful fishing experience but he was even there to show us around beautiful Punta Cana after hours.

Just wanted to drop you a line to let you know what a great time we had on our full day charter on Mike's boat "Intrepido".

I fish quite extensively from New Jersey (USA) to Maine. Recently I had a charter in Hawaii. Our 5/20/07 trip with Mike's guys was by far the most enjoyable day on the water I've ever had! The fishing was great, the crew was great, we even had a bonus watching several whales off and on! The four of us caught 15 nice Dorado, a Wahoo, and had a Blue Marlin check out our spread but he wouldn't eat.

We plan on visiting the Dominican again in 2009, and I can't wait to book a day with Mike!

Jason and I had a blast fishing aboard the Shekinah with Manuel and Catch! Looking forward to coming back to the D.R. and fishing with you in the future! May 5: Both of us hungover and tired so we decided to "take it easy" the first day of fishing due to wind and sea conditions. We boated 2 dolphin fish and 2 albacore in the first 4 hours. We raised 2 white marlin and hooked 1 on a "skipped" ballyhoo! Jason was able to subdue and land the 80lb white in under 20 minutes with a "quick release" completed boatside by mate Catch! Fished for several more hours before calling it due to wind/seas. May 6: With absolute ideal sea conditions we decided to target white marlin with flyfishing tackle. Ran "hookless" teasers of skirted ballyhoo on both flat lines, a daisy chain of squid on center line and pulled the fender teaser off left transom. Raised 4 white marlin throughout the day and Catch successfully "teased" one close enough for a "bait and switch" with a Cam Sigler Parrot fly. Fish peeled off close to 400 yards of fly backing with initial run and only jumped once! Made a total of 3 runs, but mostly stayed down about 50 feet and sulked. With constant pressure and retrieve it took me about 30 minutes to get the 100lb fish boatside for another "quick release" by mate Catch! Many thanks to Mike, Manuel and Catch and the entire support staff of Mike's Marina for a memorable experience aboard the Shekinah

Mike, I would like to take this time to tell you what a great time I had while fishing with you in the Dominican Republic. First, the hotel which I stayed at was very nice and had a lot of activities. Next, I was also impressed with the crew ( Manuel and Catch'em ). Those men made me feel very comfortable and gave me an impression of professionalism in their craft. Finally, I felt that you had a natural concern for my well being in the Dominican Republic. I appreciated that you picked me up and delivered me to any destination including the Air Port. This attention to details made my trip there a wonderful time. As a Sports fisherman and traveler of the world, I feel this trip was one of the better fishing experiences I've taken and would have no problems in coming back to fish with you in the Dominican Republic. I just wanted to write and let you know that we had an awesome experience on our half day charter last week. Both me and Dwayne caught a Mahi Mahi and it was just an excellent day. I want to thank you for all the quick responses to my emails and we will see you again the next time we are in Punta Cana (hopefully next year!). You have a wonderful crew as well, they really know what they are doing! I have attached a few pictures from our trip in case you want to include any of our catch on your website!

Thanks again for the wonderful day!

I am sending you this thanking you for everything setting up my best fishing trip since I caught my 185 pound tarpon four years ago. Your crew was awesome and professional and put me in the chair to land six Dorado out of eight with one huge bull. The only reason we didn't land them all is we didn't have enough hands. We had 3 on at the same time twice and my wife, as your boys would say, was introduced to their friend RALPH...She wasn't much help.

I have already had one guy contact you from Chicago and I will give your name to anyone who asks. I look forward to my next visit and you will definetly get a call.

Thanks Again and Good Luck

I had another great day fishing with Mike's Marina Deep Sea Fishing off Punta Cana this year. Last year we caught a big sailfin, this year its was even better. We set out in the afternoon with a fairly heavy swell and headed out way offshore. 5 dolphins joined the boat and swam with us for quite a long time before we hit a shoal of mahi mahi (dolphin fish). The lines were going off in all directions and the crew worked damned hard to help get the fish in and re-bait the rods. We caught 20 fish on our boat!!

Fantastic. I would highly recommend this company, very professional and they find the fish too!! Can't wait to go with them again.

Another GREAT year using Mikes Marina. Prebooked everything on the internet using Paypal so everything was very easy to do. Mike personally responded to all my e-mails. My little 5 year old went in a little 20 foot boat - just to do some simple fishing with his Dad. Last year he caught some this year he got something too big for our line we brought took everything so my son has his big fish story!!!! Mike provides all the fishing equipement but my little fisherman wanted to bring his own!

The rest of the gang went on the big 42 foot boat. I am very use to deep sea fishing and know sea sickness can hit anyone so a childrens gravel before you go takes the edge off. One of our guys hit a Maui Maui and everyone was very excited. Everyone enjoyed the views from the boat - they also drove right past the sunken ship. We did a half day tour and everyone got back to the resort to have a late lunch and tell all the fish stories! Thanks to the crews (they are the best!!!!) and a special thanks to Mike! your amazing!

You can see pictures in my photo album - the fishing pictures are in my Majestic Colonial album and last years photos in Ocean Sands photo album!

Manati Park - Punta Cana
Kent
March 2009
We also went to swim with the dolphins at Manati Park. 95 per person for the park entrance and swim. 30 min bus ride from resort. the park is like a nature park with lots to see in way of wild life . iguana's, crocs , parrots, flamingos , monkeys , etc.... they put on a couple of shows as well . one being a parrot show which is cute , and kind of cool . the other is a horse show of sorts. and not woth the time in my opinion . ( i have been around horses a lot so nothing for me ) the dolphin swim is ok , if you've never done it before , but it lacks in comparision tO others if you have . maybe 15 minutes in ths pool. less than 10 floating and getting to touch them ( there was 2 ) then individual interaction.......getting a dolphin kiss and a pull to the edge of pool. ( you hold onto the two under belly flippers and the swim back wards) my first time so i liked it . my wifes second ( first in cancun ) and she said it lacked. either way it was an ok way to spend 5 hrs and a 100 bucks per person. you need to sneak your drinks in . if they see them they will make you leave at front . my son had his taken away , not sure why and never really asked , think maybe someone could try to harm animals ???? or maybe they just want your $$$ at concession.

I also went to Manati Park to swim with the dolphins. It was about 10 minutes and was in a pool, but it was really neat to be able to touch the dolphins. The rest of the park was lovely. You could walk around and see different kinds of animals and there were shows a couple of times a day, including a horse show, a bird show, a dolphin and sea lion show, and a recreation of a Taino dance in the replica Taino village. The package for swimming with the dolphins was $85 US, but it is much cheaper if you just want entry into the park to take a look around. A very colourful bus picks you up at your resort. You can catch another bus back at fairly regular 2-hour intervals.

Manati Park - tried on our last day there to fit this in too-- the dolphin show was fantastic and they had a show with sea lions too - we laughed soo hard.. we rushed through the park and everything there was great - our next trip we are booking this tour first to spend the whole day there- we loved it!

The second tour we took was to Manati Park, where you can swim with dolphins. That was a lot of fun for not too much money. I believe it was $75.00 per person, which included several shows (dolphins, sea lions, horses, a native story-telling show....a little risque in parts), and you could walk all over the park and see many animals.

We also went on one tour to Manati Park. If you have kids, you will like it. We saw a dolphin and sea lion show, a parrot show, a tribal show (plus there was a horse show). It was very hot so bring lots of water from the resort with you because it's expensive at Manati Park for food and drinks. We also walked in the iguana pit, my son held a snake, a sloth, a parrot, etc. and he loved it all.

We opted for the Manati Park excursion. We probably chose the warmest day to go there, but my best friend and I wouldn't have missed swimming with the dolphins for the world! They are the gentlest, most intelligent creatures we have ever met. The Parrot Show is a must as well. We did cut our day there short though, due to the heat which was hard on our male companions. But we would highly recommend it as a must for visitors of all ages.

The Puerto Plata Runners Safari Adventure tour was awesome. We went through Puerto Plata and up the mountain into the countryside. Our jeep safari took us to a true Dominican household, beautiful views, horseback riding, a traditional Dominican lunch, a beautiful beach where we could boogie board, and the tasting of hot chocolate, coffee, coconuts, and cigars. We learned how cigars were rolled and learned even more from our excellent guide, Giovanni. We went on a national holiday so didn't get to tour the school, which is usually part of the day. Some tours include waterfall tours. The tour operator excursions do not include this as part of their tour as it is deemed unsafe by the Canadian government, but the excursions you buy on the beach will take you there.

Then we took the Puerto Plata Runners Safari Adventure trip which we LOVED! If you can take it, do it. We went to the local school and saw the kids. Just a hint, I took notebooks, pencils, pencil sharpeners, pens, markers etc....take stuff for them, they really need it! Then we went to the Ranch which we enjoyed as well. At the ranch there was a lady crushing fresh coffee beans and made us coffee and then we had fresh coco it was yummy then we went to the cigar factory that contained only 1 employee that always had a smile on his face. then we got to shop. BUT they didn't bug you. They basically said, if you need help ask and then they walked away, which I loved! They provided us with lunch and it was a beautiful spot and it was good. They really taught us alot!

Of the many tours we went on the Puerto Plata Runners, and Puerto Plata / Sosua city tour. Both were great. The Runners tour load you into a truck and off to the country you go. PLEASE DO NOT BRING CANDY!!!! The tour guide will tell you not to bring it. It will rot their teeth and teach them to beg and fight for what you give them. Pens, pencils, note books, penciled crayons…… all good choices, just not candy. They stop at a school, a farm, a cigar ‘factory’ and their ranch. At the ranch you go horse back riding or you can go see the beach. The horses were very lean and boney and the little ride you get is fun but too short. The food they served was good and more on the local side that the resorts serve. Off to another beach for boogie boarding or playing in the surf. Both were fun and informative tours

We booked a full-day Punta Cana adventure with the Bavaro Runners. It was AWESOME. Everyone who travels to Punta Cana should take this informative tour. We learned so much about the Dominican people and their way of life...their economy, their beliefs, their jobs, their family lives, etc. all while seeing the stunning countryside. Our guide, Eros, was hilarious. He really made the trip! If you do take this excursion, please bring school supplies as they stop at an Elementary School. Bavaro Runners has made it their cause to help fund the schools and they are so appreciative if you can help them by bringing markers, paper, pens, pencils, etc.

My companion did the Bavaro Runners local tour - Horeseback riding, visiting the Sugar Cane fields, coffee and Cocoa plantation, Tabacco plantation, saw a cigar rolling demonstration, there was a zipline stop on the mountains and a visit to the the public beach. Lunch and drinks provided and since my companion had some mobility issues, she found the tour quite easy to manage, and it was a full day included Lunch and drinks (of course). She was really impressed with the diverse experience and the price was good at 100$ US for the day.

WE HAD A GREAT TIME!!
Our tour guide was Mimi and he was very very good. We really liked that he wasn't over the top all the time and he took the time to tell us about the politics and culture good and bad. They picked us up at our resort with a great bus and we went to a sugar cane field and tried out the sugar cane (tasty). We went horseback riding and then to a family farm. That was really interesting. We learned about all the things they grow there and then they had the items for sale for VERY reasonable prices. We had lunch up in the hills - BEAUTIFUL!!!!!! The food was great and it was So pretty! We watched a man make cigars and they smelled wonderful!! Then we went to a beach that had fantastic waves!!!
We body surfed for over an hour and had so much fun.
I would recommend!!!!

Bring only american money to the Dominican if you can. We got hosed by converting travellers cheques to pesos and then were almost penalized for being a tourist using pesos instead of the american dollar. We saw this at the cigar factory on this tour. We were paid 30 pesos to one dollar when exchanging travllers cheques but when we were using pesos they were converting at 39 pesos to get back to the american dollar. The same box of cigars I bought in Cuba for $30 was going for $150 on this tour. So find a tour operator to recommend where to buy or ask a local you trust to buy the cigars for you. We didn't get the cigars we expected for the price we wanted. By the time all the exchanging of currency was done it was more expensive than buying them at home. This adventure also took us to a sugar cane field where we learned about sugar in the domincan. There was an armed gaurd here to prevent the haitian kids from coming from the sugar fields onto the buses and stealing electronics. Not that they all are thiefs, this tour has a reputation for the tourists handing out toys or school supplies so kids are always excited to see these tour buses. If you dont want to bring stuff for the dominican kids you can also donate to this tour operator. They sponsor schools in their community in the dominican which is awesome. We went for a short horse back ride that anyone could go on. It wasnt far or fast and showed a little of the dominican countryside. Our guide Kevin was awesome in the way that he pointed out local fauna and how it is used to heal health concerns in the dominican. The second last stop on this tour was a ranch where you could buy fresh vanilla, coffee, cocoa, mamjuana, oregano or cinnamon. It all smells heavenly and was 5$ for all the items except the mamajuana. The tour then went for a dominican lunch. The food was great. Here there was a flea market to buy things from as well. The last stop on this tour for an hour was a beach to play at. It was a nice beach and there were beach vendors. Everything from these vendors is cheapy cheapy. Don't buy your cigars from these guys they are looking for tourists to buy their cheap cigars and have anything from newspapers to leaves other than tobacco in them. It was a good tour I would recommend it for learning about the dominican and seeing life outside the resorts.

AWESOME! AWESOME! AWESOME!!! Our tourguide was Mimi and he was very knowledgeable of Dominican people and culture. We learned so much from him! We were picked up at our resort on an open air bus and taken to a ranch for horseback riding. We only rode for 15 minutes, but that was enough, as we are not experienced riders who sit correctly. It was an easy ride and we weren't sore afterward. We left there and drove through the countryside to a "typical" Domincan home which also functions as a ranch where they were picking and grinding coffee beans and cacao beans. We sampled caribbean fruits, coffee, and mamajuana. The mamajuana there had been marinating for 3 years and was much tastier and smoother than what they serve at the resorts. We then visited an elementary school. We got to see a 4th/5th grade split class. We took pictures with the kids and left school supplies we'd brought over with us with the teacher. Mimi cautioned us not to leave too much with the kids at the school because Bavaro Runners sponsors the schools they take tourist to. They only go to each school one day out of the week so as not to disrupt the learning process. He told us to give the majority of our things to the children back in the countryside. We went back into the country side and when kids would run behind the bus asking for things, we would stop and give them snacks, candy, and school supplies we'd brought with us. We stopped at a ranch for lunch. The food was Dominican cuisine and EXCELLENT!!! That was one of the best meals I had the whole week. We left there and went to Macao beach. It was the most beautiful beach I'd ever seen. None of the resorts that I've stayed at had a beachfront like this. However, there are vendors and begging children on that beach to beware of. The children there don't want candy or school supplies. They want MONEY. And only MONEY!!! One little boy tried to sell my cousin fruit. When she said no and offered him a stick of gum, he got an attitude, snatched his fruit from her and walked away...with the gum. We're on vacation. We laughed about it.

We also did the Bavaro Runners Safari Adventure day tour. This was a long day but very interesting. We had a great group of people on our bus and everyone was entertained. We had a short horseback ride, toured a school, local home, cocoa/coffee plantation/sugarcane field, one man cigar factory, eat lunch then went to a beach. The ride was very bumpy (bad roads) and lots of driving around seeing the countryside. The beach area needed to be cleaned up but the water was beautiful. Over all it was a good day and would recommend this trip if you want to see the area.

We only went on one tour Bavaro Runners Safari Adventure and it was great. They take you through the real country side to a ranch and you go horse back riding, then to a real house where they make coffee and chocolate, to a school house, then they feed you (the food was good but there was fly problem that really grossed out some people and they didn't eat). After lunch we went to a beach and chilled with some rum. The tour was worth every penny.

I went on the Bavaro Runners Safari Adventure full day tour, which is $85 US if you arrange it through your hotel. It was a lot of fun and I met many interesting people and got a chance to see a bit of the Dominican Republic outside of the resort. Pipo, our tour guide, was very entertaining. The one place that I was looking forward to was seeing a school. If you bring supplies to donate to the school, you are able to go in and meet the teacher(s) and see the classrooms. Check out the "Giving Back" section of the Bavaro Runners website to see what kinds of things schools need. If you arrange your tour online, there is a bit of a discount.

On the Bavaro Runners Safari Adventure tour, we saw a typical school, sugar cane plantation, coffee and chocoate plantation, typical Dominican home, went horseback riding (just around a trail) and swimming at a nice beach. Beware of the 'bus' ride. The roads are awful - more potholes than I have ever seen. I sat at the back and my butt was sore for 2 days afterwards. Our guide was Pepo and he was a riot. English wasn't bad. They certainly keep the beer and vitamin R (rum) flowing.

We had a FABULOUS time on our full day tour. Mimi was wonderful and we are so glad we requested him!! ( I'm so happy I read others reviews here!) He made our trip so enjoyable. Our two sons were the only kids on the tour and Mimi and Billy made sure they experienced everything they possibly could! My younger son (age 5) even jumped in Mimi's arms to touch the boa constrictor that the "snake man" had along the route! (My husband, myself and my 8 year old wouldn't get near it, but my younger son felt so safe with Mimi!) We brought along coloring books, books, crayons, notepads and clothes for the Dominican children we saw along the way! It was so rewarding for us and all of the other passengers loved seeing the children express such happiness! Thanks Mimi for equitably passing things out to the children! It was a true learning experience for my family to take such a wonderful tour and view your beautiful countryside. Keep up the good work, BavaroRunners!

We did the Bavaro Runners trip. It was similar to a trip we did in Cuba – sugar cane plantations, a fruit farm, lunch at the beach with horseback riding and other activities, driving through the local small towns, etc. It was interesting and worth the US$80 / person, if only to get off the resort for a day. Over all this tour was great, our guide was very knowledgeable and was able to tell us a great deal about Punta Cana and the culture. We had talked to the tour Rep. at EdenH about this half day tour before we booked; she told us all about the different stops we would be going on. Well, we specifically asked would it be stopping at a beach, she stated NO. None of our group brought along a bathing suite then to our surprise on our ride to our first stop we were told we would all be going to a beach for boogie boarding! We were not too happy about this; of course it was not the fault of the guide or driver so we did make a big deal of it then. I did go back to the resort and I tried to talk to the tour Rep. but she stated she never told us that…from now on I guess I just bring a suite no matter what.

Outback Safari, worth every cent of the US $79. We had gone on the tour when we were in Punta Cana a couple of years ago & loved it; this one sounded a little different and decided to go again. A great time. There is a little river ride, very peaceful, you can have your picture taken with a small alligator. The day ends on a secluded beach, Cabarete. The beach is beautiful, but unfortunately covered in litter. The company gives a lot back to the community by supporting churches, schools and families. At the end of the day they have tshirts, hats and bags available for purchase to help pay for those efforts. We cannot recommend this trip enough. We took the Outback Jungle Safari and were so happy we did. Besides breaking up the monotony of being stuck on a resort for 7 days. If gave us a chance to see how the Dominican people really live and work. While sad in a way, it also made me realize that material things in this life really are not a necessity to maintain my life, just a convenient factor that helps me cope. The people we met along the way were simple, yet beautiful. They worked hard for what they had and were proud of it. The kids we met just melted our hearts. How anyone could walk off that truck and not be a better person would make me question their character. Our driver was Louie and our tour guide was Alex. Alex was very knowledgeable and was VERY informative. He had a passion for his people, and was not afraid to list the good with the bad. He didn't paint his people with a broad brush as he explained the differences between the many different sociality gaps. Visiting a typical home, we seen how a typical family lives and how they work to support their family. We learned that unlike North Americans, the elders were treated with dignity and respect – Perhaps modern society has a lot to learn from people we consider “poor”. We stopped at a rum shack and watched how cigars are rolled. Here they sold cigars and rum... good stuff! We proceeded to see how sugarcane was grown and had a sample. We learned all about Mama Juana – A potion made of of roots, herbs, berries, rum, honey and wine that is suppose to be a natural aphrodisiac! I couldn't get pass the smell to find out :-) But the most striking stop was at a school. The kids just melt your heart. We brought along several hundred pencils, glue sticks and gave them to the teacher to distribute as he seen fit. The kids sang us a song and they were just so cute. We were taught how the kids are schooled and what is expected of them. The beer, rum, water and soda flowed all day and the truck full of international travelers all became Dominicans for a day. If you have the chance to do this excursion, forget the $80 per person fee and just do it. You'll thank me later.

Worth the money. Truck picks you up from the resort around 8:30 am and takes you to a remote part of the Dominican where you are able to see how they really live. There are a few stops during the trip where you are able to buy gifts such as rum and cigar. Lunch on the trip was ok, although I'm still not sure if it was chicken that I ate. After lunch, they take you to a beach with moderate size waves where you are able to boggy board. MUCH FUN. We also did the outback safari (67 US $ per person since we were a group of 10+), which in our opinion was the best trip we have done so far 10+traveling south. We did a tour of the back country (were you stop a little village house to experience how they live), stopped at a local river. I wouldn’t recommend walking in the water, as there are many parasites in the water which can lead to sickness since us as Canadians are not immune to this. We saw some tourists with small children strolling in the river, which is really not recommended by our Canadian health authorities. We then headed for lunch were they served Mexican food which again was delicious. After we took a few pictures with small crocodiles and then boarded a small wooden boat for a 20 minute ride along a small river. Afterwards we headed back in the jeep towards Cabaret beach, where we had fun doing ‘’boogey boarding’’ in the big waves for about 1 30minutes. This had to be the highlight of our trip. We then headed back to our hotel for supper. Our day was great thanks to Rudy our tour guide and Hosa our very experienced driver (you have to be an excellent driver if you drive in DR…it’s unbelievable the way people drive). Next was the Outback Safari… our rep Angel was fantastic, fluent English (but he pretended not to be at times, and came out with naughty double innuendos) the Dominican house was well equipped, and thanks to the help from the Outback safari, the people there had happy lives. The small village was poor, but the people were happy. Angel had us singing tequila, and then later, the locals came running after us shouting “tequila” at Angel! He must have taught them! As they were screaming “Angel” at him!

I gave a load of school supplies to Angel, as the school was closed for summer, he said he’d deliver them… we were asked not to throw stuff out to the locals, but when we stopped at a river, a child came up to me to ask for money, I was reassured that we were allowed to give these children sweets, as it was not school time… so I came out with a bag of sweets and party favour toys (little plastic puzzles) and the children went mad for them! It was truly a heart warming moment! Although, I would advise anyone reading this during term time, not to bring such gifts for the children, as their education is extremely important, and the gifts are incentive for them to skip school… if you want to help, then please do bring pencils and school supplies for their school, and indeed for Mustard Seed (the house where the children’s home is based)

Almost our entire group went on the Outback Safari ($80 US each) and absolutely loved it. Well worth the money.

If you want to know more about the real Puerto Plata as their slogan says, than give this a try. You’ll also have a hell of a lot of fun doing so. Jesse & Scoobie are such great characters & so knowledgeable & really made this trip a memorable one for us. Boogie boarding was a blast!!!!
