Los Gringos
Not Rated
Location: 70k east of Puerto Plata airport between Gaspar Hernandez and Rio San Juan - Beachfront
3 Cabanas
Description from resort website: Here you will find the Los GrinGos Beach Bar and Grill offering everything from a refreshing drink to a quick snack...plus three wonderful thatched beach cabanas to stay in. Los Gringos is situated at one end of Playa Magante, a spectacular stretch of sand scattered with palm trees offering plenty of shade, where you can walk for miles and enjoy what nature has given this part of the island. And, as we are protected by a double coral reef, there is safe swimming and snorkelling from the beach. Thankfully, no power boats and no jet skis. Just the occasional local fishing boat and the lap of the waves.

Los Gringos Steve
September 2006

I just returned from a three day stay at this beautiful little resort. It was one of the most tranquil places I’ve ever stayed. I awoke to the sounds of waves lapping the shore every morning. The manager Patrick cooked some of the best food I’ve ever eaten. We had filet mignon the size of a roast. We also had mutton, fresh fish, and a wonderful breakfast every morning. Wendy was always there to wait on us hand and foot. The rooms were clean, showers hot, and the beds very comfortable. We had the beach to ourselves most of the time and could lounge about in the hammocks or beach chairs. In the evenings we went into Rio San Juan to play a little. Patrick found us a guide to help us out and show us around. Patrick has been in the Dominican Republic for 13 years so he pretty much can answer any questions you have. I highly recommend this beautiful little get away for anyone.

Los Gringos Patricia ~ UK
July 2006

Just discovered this little gem and stayed for a week at the beginning of June in cabana GriGri. The rooms are right on the beach, next to the fabulous restaurant where Patrick cooks wonderful and tasty meals for a very reasonable price.

Delightfully relaxing, lovely comfortable beds and most unusual, fully tiled and working bathrooms on the beach with hot showers.

Made to feel very at home and welcome, but you can still have your peace and quiet on your own veranda, just looking out through the palm trees, doing nothing.

Lovely swimming and long beach walks.

Going back next month with all the cheap flights that are now available from the UK via www.airflights.co.uk. Patricia

Los Gringos Jayne ~ UK
June 2006

I went to a new small resort near Rio San Juan called Los Gringos on May 9th through May 16th 2006. It’s a group of three new palm thatched cabanas and a large thatched restaurant/bar. It’s located right on the owner’s private, sandy and secluded beach. The only visitors being the local fishermen going out or coming back from a days fishing or visitors for lunch or dinner in the restaurant. The beach is sandy and virtually deserted. Sometimes a riding party will gallop past. If you’re interested in riding, the horses are fabulous and are delivered right to your cabana door for a three hour ride (or less!) along the beach and through the woods. You can buy conch shells from the fishermen and Lorenzo, the handyman, is happy to lop off the top of a coconut for you.

What a place to chill out! The food was gorgeous. The chef, Patrick, is Belgium and peaks 5 languages. He cooks with an international style using fresh fish, pasta, steaks. Everything mouth-watering! One night we had a fantastic BBQ on the beach. There’s plenty of beer, wine and mixer drinks too.

The cabanas are new and very comfortable with hot showers, ensuite bathrooms, fans and mosquito netting on all the beds. Each has a decked porch with a hammock or hammock chair. It’s about 50 steps to the beach and the same to the restaurant.

There’s lots to do nearby. Gri Gri lagoon was great. Diving excursions are taken out from the lagoon too. Find Felix who speaks English and will organise everything and go along as translator…for a small fee!

This resort is off the beaten track and not for those who want a big resort atmosphere but it was the best holiday I’ve ever had and I’m desperate to go back.

The prices are very reasonable too. Patrick was doing a website when I was there but not sure if it’s finished yet as he said beginning July. www.losgringodr.com

Hotel Coyamar Laura and Charlie ~ USA
August 2005

My family and I recently returned from a week long visit to Playa Bonita on the Samana peninsula where we stayed at the Hotel Coyamar. It's a small, ten room hotel (two buildings with five rooms each) with restaurant and bar and located off the beaten path near the town of Las Terrenas. This is an excellent place for those looking to avoid crowds, casinos, and the mega resorts; take life easy and experience the "real" Dominican Republic. The hotel staff is very friendly, the food is great and the beach is beautiful and not crowded. The rooms are spacious but beware - they are not air conditioned, only a ceiling fan, but they do cool off at night (my daughter and her husband had a first floor room which was much cooler than the second floor room my wife and I had). One can hike into town (~3 miles) or catch a motorcycle taxi or a regular taxi for shopping and dining. There are many tourist shops and restaurants in Las Terrenas. Peter, the hotel's owner, will arrange for a taxi to pick you up at the airport in Puerto Plata and take you back when your visit is over (about a three to three and one half hour taxi ride one way!). The cost is reasonable and included in your room bill. We really enjoyed our stay, hated to leave and will definitely try to make it back again!

Hotel La CatalinaBonnie & Laurier ~ USA
July 2005

We had the good fortune to be part of a golf tournament staying at La Catalina Inn last October 2004. Approximately 90 minutes from the Puerta Plata airport.

First off, we are accustomed to All Inclusive resorts so this was our first stay in a "boutique" type hotel. (La Catalina has about 30 rooms and "apartments".) We stayed in one of the rooms set off in 2 buildings on the North side of the resort. The "villas" are south of the main building. Our first impression was of the beauty of being up in the hills overlooking lush vegetation and the sparkling blue ocean beyond. After large AI resorts with constant activity music blaring, you can appreciate the quiet elegance of this resort. It was like a breath of fresh air! Our room was very comfortable and nicely appointed with a ceiling fan and A/C, but what a treat to open your double doors onto a small

balcony overlooking the beautiful gardens and the fresh hillside breezes! The rooms were cleaned daily and supplied fresh towels. Breakfast and dinner was included, with several traditional breakfast choices and a limited dinner menu. The quality is excellent with a nice presentation. They have a gem of a chef. The main bar area is also the dance/entertainment area. Very friendly and informal. A nice place to make new friends and re-aquaint with old ones.

The general manager, Debbie Allum-Ennis, will make you feel welcome as if you are old friends and family. Natalie and Sue are also on hand to make customers feel welcome and comfortable. All the staff were polite and helpful. There are 2 pools and a jacuzzi.

If you are looking for a gentle, quietly elegant, piece of the Dominican Republic, you can not go wrong with a stay at La Catalina Inn. And give our love to Debbie!!

Hotel Residence Playa Colibri
Daniele --- Italy
August 2004

I just came back from a 2 week vacation to the Dominican Republic. After reading many great reviews and seeing the rates of Hotel Playa Colibri, I decided to take my husband for our 10 year aniversary to this hotel in Las Terrenas. I could not have made a better choice, and would like to let other people know what a perfect place this is. We are not the kind of people who like the all inclusive kind of thing, we like to be free and a little bit adventurous. This hotel was perfect for that, but without having to hassle ourselves with the taxt drivers at the airport, because the hotel had made all the arrangements, and believe me, after a 10 hour flight this is a great thing. We received a warm welcome at the hotel, the staff was very friendly (we were helped by Marleen, who spoke several languages and kindly showed us our apartment). We felt like coming home and settled in immediately to the Dominican way of life. Sipping a cuba libre on the beach (right in front of the hotel of course), we watched some spectacular sunsets, since it sets right in front of the hotel. During the day we simply kicked back, read many books (after I had finished my books, I was very pleased to find out that the hotel has a small library with some great books left by other guests and available for free to other guests). At Playa Colibri they have a good eye for small details, and this made it a very relaxing and satisfying experience. Highly recommended!

Hotel Residence Playa Colibri
Don & Jane
May 2004

I went with my girlfriend to Las Terrenas in the Dominican Republic. Friends told us to go to Playa Colibri: a great place and very inexpensive with many different sized apartments. Everything they told us about Playa Colibri was true, the hotel is very beautiful, the staff super friendly and very helpful, the rooms meticulously clean. We only went for one week, but would have loved to stay longer, there is plenty to do in the little town of Las Terrenas (we went diving and rented a quad to explore the surroundings). Coming back from our day trips or the spectacular white beaches in front and close to the hotel, already the first day it felt like coming home. They have a very good restaurant on the premises, but there are also some nice restaurants on the beach, but they did not match the quality of the food we had at Colibar. We really recommend this place and would like you to post our review. Best Regards, Don & Jane
