What a rare treat to stay in a quaint, clean hotel with so many on-site and nearby amenities run by a couple who truly understands what "Customer Service" is all about.
A chance meeting in early 2008 at a Sosua supermarket led to the discovery of a wonderful Cabarete gem - Casa Blanca Hotel - owned and operated by William and Dorothy Oosterman. We've been at the all-inclusives for years, but wanted something smaller and quieter where we could relax at our own pace. We were not disappointed!
When: late May 2008
Length of Stay: 2 weeks
Our studio room, Janet's Supermercado
We booked Studio E on the second floor with "Romeo and Juliet" balcony overlooking the pool and luscious garden just a few weeks after returning from a trip to Sosua in February. William provided me with lots of information about the hotel and area, and arranged for driver Jose to pick us up at the airport ($35 USD - government rate for taxi from POP airport to Cabarete).
The room was spacious with a kitchen area and countertop propane stove, sink, dishes and utensils and small fridge with freezer. Lots of storage space for our stuff, TV suspended from the ceiling with many channels, spacious bathroom and of course the balcony with table chairs and wicker loveseat. We really enjoyed buying our food and beverages at Janet's Supermercado (pronounced Yanet's) less than 5 minute walk from the hotel, and cooking our own meals and snacks. We spent less than $ 250 US in food, liquor, beverages and water from Janet's Supermercado in two weeks. At home, we easily spend that much in a week. Everything you need is in that store, including large jugs of water and liquor. There's also an exchange desk where you can change your money into pesos and a Claro (acquired Verizon Dominicana last year) mobile phone retail outlet. Many shops and restaurants just steps away from the hotel, and many kilometres of beach, sand, kite surfers and wind surfers.
We were so impressed with how clean everything was inside and outside the hotel with ample hot water and pressure, no complaints at all. The ceiling fan and movable floor fan cooled us off nicely, and the amazing mid-afternoon breeze was wonderful. Slept peacefully the entire two weeks. We even awoke at 6 am several times to watch the sunrise and listen to the birds. We enjoyed having our friend Larry the lizard in our room as he did a great job gobbling up some bugs. There were some mosquitoes, but we brought plenty of bug stuff with DEET. Our legs got chewed one evening at dinner on the beach when forgot to spray, but took a Benedryl to keep the swelling down. Some vinegar on the bites soothed the itching. Only a 5 minute walk to the sandy beach, and did some refreshing walks for up to an hour each way. We were truly ecstatic, and met so many nice people, too.
Services
The daily maid service by Rita was fantastic; she even neatly folded some clothes we had accidentally dropped on the floor. We always left a tip for Rita as a thank you for her excellent work. Our room was always very clean, especially the bathroom. The pool was fantastic, and we spent alot of time there as I had a nasty cold for the first four days. William and Dorothy had inflatable chairs and mattresses for guests to use and we enjoyed their company on several occasions for a chat around the pool. The trees and flowers were beautiful, especially the flowering banana and coconut trees, many birds - mockingbirds, woodpeckers, mourning doves - visiting cat we nicknamed Claro who came by almost every day for a pat and escape the sun under the trees. Many lizards were fun to watch scurrying around, even rescued a little one "Poco" that fell in the pool twice.
William and Dorothy were the perfect hosts, asked us every day how things were, if we needed anything, and full of helpful tips like where to exchange money, getting around, restaurants, prices, etc. We went out for dinner with them, including Casanova (pasta and pizza specials half price 5-6 pm daily), The Downwinder (love the food, drinks & air conditioning), Tropicoco (amazing buffet), Pomodoro (very good pastas and pizza, but service very slow). We always felt safe in the hotel, but kept things locked away and locked our door and closed windows whenever we were out or on the balcony. Just like home, don't leave valuables laying about. Common sense is necessary wherever you travel. We appreciated their constant concern for us and other guests, and being able to call upon them 24/7. It's nice to know that if you have a problem or question, they're always happy to oblige. Never felt like we were being a pain by asking so many questions, unlike some places you stay. Even if you arrive late at night or wee morning hours, they make arrangements to pick you up at the airport and help you settle in to the hotel. Exceptional, first rate guest services! And, you could rent a motorcycle for $ 20/day, but we like to walk, so explored mainly on foot.
Restaurants
We ate often at Claro restaurant at the hotel's front entrance. Great food, great service, great prices. Our favorite meals and beverages: BLT, Yummi sandwich, Herb Chicken Veggie Wrap, Fruit Salad, Waffles, Cheeseburger, Traditional Breakfast, French toast, smoothies. We tried almost everything on the menu! And the coffee was amazing.
We also ate at Jose O'Shay's Irish Pub (awesome Margaritas and steak), Grill 15, The Downwinder (amazing homemade pies, cappuccinos, bacon cheeseburgers and very spicy Cabarete Burger), Lax and Pitu (yummy Mexican dishes). We rented two beach chairs and an umbrella one afternoon for $ 6 USD, and someone would take your drink and food orders and deliver them right to you for a small fee.
Miscellaneous
We didn’t take any tours, preferring to hang out on the beach, go for long walks and people watch. We went for a few drives with William, who's also a Remax agent, to check out some properties. We had no intentions of buying anything, just to look, but we fell in love with a studio condo in Cabarete, just a five minute drive from Casa Blanca Hotel, and before we knew it, we made an offer, it was accepted and now it's ours! We're still in shock that we own a piece of paradise, thanks to our new found friends. This was by far the best vacation ever, and we look forward to seeing our new friends again very soon!
| Casa De Las Anas ~ Cibao | Anita |
Casa De Las Anas is a small bed and breakfast tucked away in the Cibao area of the Dominican Republic. This area is the less seen, less advertised GORGEOUS mountainous area of the country. Packed with trees and rivers, it is a getaway very different from the beach or typical tourist resorts. They only have 3 rooms, are a long way from the usual tourist haunts and are in a very modest neighborhood. Come here for relaxation and an authentic taste of Dominican Culture and FOOD. Oh the food is amazing, every meal is home cooked by the owner and included in the price which definitely offsets the annoyance of the roosters in the morning! Casa De Las Anas is a great place to practice your Spanish and an excellent setting for kids. Experience the unique beauty of the Dominican Republic Backcountry at Casa De Las Anas.

Casa Dorado Bed and Breakfast — Not Rated Location: Las Galeras - Samana Description from Website: The bed and breakfast has 3 rooms for rent. The large tropical garden is perfect for relaxing after a day of swimming, fishing, whale watching or hiking. Visitors can rent one bedroom or the entire house. Cleaning service is provided |
| Casa Dorado Bed and Breakfast | Dawn |
We stayed there last month. Casa Dorado is a beautiful Mexican-style house. Gorgeous mexican tiles, hammocks and wi-fi throughout the house made it a great place to stay. They had the most wonderful breakfasts: waffles, eggs, fried cheese, amazing dominican sausage. They also do grilled fish and lobster for dinner if you order beforehand. And the best part is they have fresh water in their showers, not salty water.
Casa Dorado is right down the street from the best beach in Las Galeras, La playita, and Casa Dorado offers boat rides to Playa Rincon, one of the best beaches in DR. It is truly one of the most remarkable beaches I have ever been to. Playa Rincon is totally undeveloped and gorgeous, and is a great place for swimming. We also snorkeled at La Playita and Playa Fronton.
Roberto and Catherine were great hosts and offered suggestions on beaches and El Limon waterfall. Their website is www.casadoradodr.com. I would rate it 5 stars.

| Villa Taina | Nicole ~ Montreal, Quebec |
When booking my trip to Cabarete, I was disappointed not to find that much about Villa Taina so I thought I’d send you a review for future customers. From booking through internet until time to check out it was a fabulous experience.
I received prompt reply every time I emailed for information, reservation and changes in our traveling schedule. That was a good start. When we arrived in mid-afternoon I still had my hand on the door handle that the gentleman at the front desk called me by my name. I was really impressed.
The hotel is not that big... Just big enough (60 rooms maybe ?) But the service equals all larger, renowned chains. So you get a personalized service. We had a standard room on 3rd floor with a view on trees and next door building but it didn’t matter we spent so little time in the room mainly at night to sleep. The room are large enough, extremely clean, with all facilities. The shower was spotless with warm water at all time. We never had power shortage either.
The entire hotel is spotless. The pool is average size but not that many people uses it. However it is really a nice pool surrounded by nice garden, also spotless.
The beach front is just like heaven. Clean no matter what time. Enough lounge chairs for all the clientele of the hotel. You don’t have to run at 6h00 am to put your towel. Once they know your habit the beach service boys will set up your chair in advance. It is really worth the tip I was giving them as an appreciation every morning. I already miss my little friend Antonio. This child works on the beach daytime and goes to school at night. I wish some kids in Canada should be exposed to this to appreciate their easy life here.
All the people at Taina are so kind and nice. Always around to help should you need the extra service.
Restaurant, the Serenade offers an excellent menu and the food is of excellent quality. My husband suffer of a heart problem and they did everything to provide him with a meal that meet the diet requirements, and always with a smile. They also organize thematic nights where we did appreciate the BBQ buffet. Excellent!
The clientele is rather older (mid 40 and up) mainly European (German, Italian, Polish) we were the visible minority – Francophone from Montreal – but it really didn’t matter. We were there to relax, enjoy the beach, the sun and the wind surfers. We give Villa Taina a 5 stars and thanks everyone there for this excellent vacation.
My only complaint has nothing to do with the hotel. There are just too many vendors on the beach that bother you all the time!

In addition to being one of the oldest (and many locals say "the best") restaurants in the area, Nicole's cooking has been highlighted in several European travel guides with seafood and steaks as her speciality. |
| el Marinique | Meegan ~ Canada |
This small hotel in las galeras is worthy of a good review. The 2 level apt. is clean, comfortable and is unlike staying at big hotels. We got the attention we deserved: nicole cooked us everything we requested, we enjoyed their beautiful restaurant overlooking the sea and they helped us hook up a boat trip to playa rincon. It is like staying at a quaint b&B and I highly recommend it!

Tropix Hotel - Sosua — Not Rated Location: Sosua - North Coast - Approximately 20 minutes from Puerto Plata airport All-inclusive - 12 rooms Description from resort website: Air-conditioning and ceiling fans - Private bath with shower Refrigerator - Free Wireless Internet - walking distance of beach and restaurants |
| Tropix Hotel | USA |
I love small, boutique hotels where you get the real flavor of the area. This is a prime example. Being there took me right away from my hectic life in the US and sent me into a calm and breezy state. The room was perfect, the pool was perfect. The plantings are lush and gorgeous. You should see the orchids growing wild on the trees! In season there are plenty of mangoes to go around - right off the trees on-site. See the picture on the web site - exactly how it looks. The owner is a wonderful hostess and great fun; she'll do everything to make your stay perfect and will be happy to share local secrets - best restaurant, a deserted beach, a wonderful walk. The pancakes prepared by Juan for breakfast are the best I've ever had. I'm going back again and again, when I can escape from the "hectic". I love it there!

illas Jazmin - Costambar — Not Rated Location: Costambar ( Puerto Plata) - North Coast - Approximately 30 minutes from Puerto Plata airport Description: Villas Jazmin en Costambar offers a swimming pool and is near restaurants and shops. |
| Villas Jazmin | Paige ~ USA |
Just returned back from a week-long trip to Costambar (a quiet gated community located 3 miles away from Puerto Plata). We stayed at Villas Jazmin as part of our RCI vacation exchange.
The Good
* This is not an all-inclusive resort. There is the option of a food plan for $160 per person for the week (breakfast and dinner). However, in Costambar there are many other restaurants with excellent food worth trying out. The most I paid for a meal was $10 US. It is worth exploring and experiencing different places instead of being stuck in one place.
* They have excursions leaving everyday for those who want to do more than lay on the beach. I took the Jeep Safari trip and would highly recommend it to everyone.
* This is a very quiet, very safe little community. It is not for those who want an exciting nightlife and a young crowd. It is perfect for those who want to lie on a quiet, not crowded beach with the option of going out to some of the local bars at night.
The Not-So-Good
* Do not expect a soft, sandy beach. Costambar’s beach is protected by a coral reef which keeps large waves from forming. This also prevents sea shells washed on shore from being broken down into soft sand. We also saw a fair amount of trash on the beach including some broken glass. If staying at the Villas Jazmin, Carlos the beach boy will provide you with beach chairs for 40 RD (or a little over $1 US) per chair per day.
* The water is warm and clear, but not ideal for more than wading. The coral reef does provide those interested in snorkeling with a nice view.

Loase Resort and Raquetball Club — Not Rated Location: Costambar - North Coast |
| Loase Resort and Raquetball Club | Adrian |
My wife and I have put many reviews for all inclusive resorts in Dominican Republic and I never thought that we would ever go to one that wasn't all inclusive. We recently changed our mind with the help of a friend.
As a first time visitor to the Loase Resort and Raquetball Club in Costambar I did not know what to expect. I was told about Loase by a friend who had stayed there and all I had to go on was their website . On the drive from the Puerto Plata airport to Loase we thought what did we get ourselves into. Once we arrived we were surprised at how nice and private the resort was. We stayed in a large room with a sunken bathroom that was closest to the pool. This was the biggest room I had ever stayed in before and when I asked the owner Jose about the size of the rooms he said that they tend to get many european guests that stay for as long as a month and their comfort was important. There is a small golf course located behind the hotel and had a beautiful view of the mountains. The best part was how generous the hotel staff was and the cook was incredible! Make sure you ask for the curry chicken which takes him an entire day to prepare but is absolutely incredible. We wanted to taste the local food and were told by the manager to speak with the cook and he would be glad to help us. We had no idea how far they would go to please us. Several times during our stay we were asked what we wanted to have and they would go shopping for the items and have it ready for our meal. This included breakfast, lunch, dinners and snacks it did not matter what our request was it was done. We would gladly return the Loase on our next trip. This is definitely a hidden treasure and I want to take advantage of it before everyone finds out about it.

Todo Blanco - Las Galeras — Not Rated Location: - Las Galeras - North Coast - 3 - 4 hrs hours from Puerto Plata All-inclusive - 8 rooms Description: |
| Todo Blanco |
My sister and I stayed at Todo Blanco in Las Galeras in March of 2005.
We liked the fact that it was not an All-Inclusive, and we were prepared to sacrifice some creature comforts for the charm of a smaller more authentic place to stay.
I can compare it to two other small and close-by hotels Tropical Lodge in Samana (an hour or so by gua-gua) as well as Playa Bonita in Las Galeras (a 1 minute walk/next door).
Breakfast was better than at Tropical Lodge
Staff was friendliest at Todo Blanco.
We had a lovely 2nd floor room with a balcony overlooking the green yard, with white cotton curtains that billowed out the window.
Tropical Lodge is the quietest place in Samana - no small feat. But their decorations are nill, depressing rooms.
Todo Blanco took the cake for class and nice decor - this is the place to send a fashion buyer who drinks cosmos and wears all black, WHEN she wants to try "roughin' it."
We did have rather salty showers - very salty - that was the one draw-back. My eyes burned sometimes from it. But hey!
Todo Blanco does not have a pool - but if you buy a drink you can swim next door at Playa Bonita!!
The salty showers were our only complaint, and in the D.R. that is a small price to pay.
We will only return to TODO BLANCO, no more Tropical Lodge and no more Playa Bonita.

Paraiso Tropical — ![]() ![]() ![]() Location: Beach front - Cabarete - North Coast - 20 mins. from Puerto Plata airport All-inclusive - 170 rooms Description: Formerly the Sea Grape Hotel - 3 Restaurants - 1 Pool |
| Paraiso Tropical | Paul & Jen |
My wife and I arrived at 11:30 am on Saturday March 22/08 at Paraiso Tropical in Cabarete. We opted to take a cab there as to avoid the lineup at check-in. The ride there was smooth and the driver was excellent.Check in was great as before when we were there in Nov/06.Chris the gentleman behind the counter is very efficient and remebered us from the previous time there.Christina the manager remembered us also and as did a few of the remaining animation staff that were still there. I must say that all of the staff are very efficient at their job and excellent at remembering people ,even though they see so many people every day.The room we were assigned was a little dated but it was very comfortable and always very clean. The cleaning lady always made sure we had some sort of animal made of towels everyday, which I think is wonderful that they take the time to do that even though they have so much to do and so little pay.(We made sure she got a tip everyday)This resort is just an awesome paradise,a diamond in the ruff, a great little place to just relax and enjoy a wonderful time without all of the sometimes annoying travel club folks at other resorts that can hassle you to no end.The food was always good as we never went away hungry from any meal. There was always an egg station at breakfast for eggs anyway you would want them.At lunch, there was always something there for everyone to eat,as dinner ,same thing, lots of choice. One evening they had roast suckling pig on a spit which we just think is amazing. We only tried the Mexican ala carte,it was superb. We ate chimichingas and quesidillas and to finish the meal they served a big shot of Tequilla and lime.Simply superb. The beer served is Presidente which is almost the best beer you can find. The pina coladas were always awesome as were the cuba libre. The beach is always cleaned as you see the workers raking the seaweed everyday. The beach is just right outside the resort about 20 steps. What a great view. The folks at this resort are so helpful and caring if you had a problem it would be fixed right away. The people of the D.R. are wonderful and so is this resort.I can't beleive that this resort would get a bad review but I guess my opinions are mine and other peoples are theirs.Just as we were leaving and saying our good-byes to all the staff,Christina the manager came up to us and gave us this little plate of cookies. The plate was made of some sort of plaster as a momento of their resort. She is such a great person and makes you feel at home.We will definitely be returning in November to Paraiso Tropical as we vacation twice a year to the D.R. We absolutely love this great little hideaway.
| Paraiso Tropical | Jane |
Just returned from 1 week at Paraiso Tropical. It was my second trip to this area of the Dominican. No complaints about the resort. Everything that was said in the December 07 review is what I would write. Food was good, we ate at the Italian A La Carte and enjoyed it, didn't try the Mexican and tried to make reservations for the Thai but it wasn't open while we were there. Rooms are older but clean, we did request a different room when we arrived as we were very far from the main buildings and pools, we were told they were full but would let us know and we were moved after the third night to a larger room near the pools. Very friendly staff who are more than happy to interact with vacationers and they put on great shows in the evenings considering they are a very small entertainment staff. The pools were clean, one is quiet the other had most of the activities, water polo, volleyball, aerobics, etc. The ocean has pretty substantial waves but not unmanageable. You just need to be aware of your surrounding and not be irresponsible that's why it's the ocean and not a pool!! Overall, it is a no frills resort that lives up to it's 3 stars. I did an all inclusive last minute deal with gotraveldirect and it was well worth the money. P.S. The Outback Safari which you can book through the hotel is fabulous!

Hola-
My wife and I, ( 56 and 62 years old ) just returned from this hotel after a two week vacation - Dec 14-28/07. I have traveled extensively over the past 35 years in the Bahamas, Central America, South America and the Caribbean. In my mind, vacations are what you make them. This hotel is NOT in North America , nor does it try to be North American. Vacations are NOT made by hotels, they are made by the travelers.
Food-
Good simple fare within the buffet range. No problems having a good meal. The Italian a-la-carte restaurant was only opened on 2-3 occasions, we caught one meal there and it was excellent. The Mexican restaurant was never opened, yet we were in high season. My food rating is high!
Rooms
The mail hotel section is older and has very, very small rooms that are antiquated. We were in this section the first night and it was simply not up to any standards. We requested a room change which was promptly accommodated with courtesy. The second room was adequate and clean. Room rating is adequate!
The Staff
The staff use of English is limited , however they all seem to be Happy Campers with Great attitudes. They go the extra mile and always are helpful and cheerful. Staff rating is very high!
The Pools
There are two pools which are maintained in a reasonable fashion. One near the ocean which is noisy and a second inner for the people who want to be in a quiet environment. Pool rating average!
The Beach
Be prepared for Huge waves. Wave surfing is the norm rather than swimming. In two weeks there was only two days where the Green Flag for swimming was raised. The undertow is noticeable. Not the best swimming environment. Beach rating is low!
The Guests
If you are an extrovert and want to interact with lots of Canadians..stay away. This is a hotel with a 75% German occupancy and they are aggressive! If you like your own company......its SUPER ! We saw only one additional Canadian couple in two weeks. There were a few Brits and a few Icelanders. For us, it was super as we did not go to make friends, rather to have a peaceful time.
Overview
Good value for the dollar. If you want an action packed vacation you had best stay away. However, if you want a rest vacation it can fit your needs. Nothing is spectacular, but them again it surely is one of the better three star hotels.
If you want any further information, simply write to me at cottreau@nbnet.nb.ca

I recently returned from a fabulous 2 week vacation at the Paraiso Tropical Beach Resort just outside of Cabarete. I had read a couple of reviews and had mixed feelings. After spending Two weeks at this resort, all I can say is it is GREAT. The place Is small, but beautifully landscaped and maintained and very clean. The rooms were large and clean as well and comfortable. The food at the buffet wad very good and a great variety to choose from. I think me and my partner both put on some weight. The 3 A La Carte restaurants were quite good as well, and a nice break from the buffet. The staff was terrific and helped make our visit a memorable one. It has 2 beautiful and clean pools and is about 20 feet from a lovely beach.
I have visited the Dominican Republic 7 times and stayed at 7 different hotels, and can honestly say that this was one of the best ones. I will certainly return there again. Drop me a line if I can help in any way. Good luck! Harvey S. (windowguy7@sympatico.ca)

We went to Paraiso Tropical (Cabarete, Dominican Republic) in November of 2006, and had a great time. The staff at the hotel were all fantastic - they were very friendly, and went out of their way to please. The animation staff were great people and made our vacation. The rooms were clean, the pools were clean and the food was good. This is a 3 star resort therefore we went with low expectations and we were pleasantly surprised. We will be returning in Feb/2007 and can not wait.
| Paraiso Tropical | Patricia ~ North Bay, Ont, Canada |
I went to Paraiso Tropical (Cabarete, Dominican Republic) in April of 2006, and it was probably the best experience I ever had. The staff at the hotel were all fantastic - they were very friendly, and went out of their way to please. Many of the staff spoke several languages, which was very impressive. The room was clean, and the service ladies did an excellent job. As for the food, there was a nice variety, and was not too spicy. The staff at the buffet area were great, and happily made Tim Horton's coffee for me, which I brought from Canada. It took a little while to explain what I needed, as some of the staff in this area did not speak great English. But, when done, it was served with a smile. I don't think I have ever met a friendlier group of people in my life.
There was a young lad there, aptly nicknamed "Jackie Chan" (Jose is his real name). He was fantastic with the children, and usually kept them occupied for a good portion of the day. My son just loved him, and probably missed him the most out of anyone when we left. Then there is Tico, a very sweet older man - he's the guy to see if you have a sunburn. He very respectfully treated my sunburn with aloe vera. The front desk staff were excellent, and always very helpful if you needed anything.
The entertainment was simple, but very good all the same. The "Mr. Paraiso Tropical" contest was hilarious. You will have to go there for yourself to see it.
I would highly recommend this hotel to anyone. I will be going back in November for a week, and next year in April for two. I can't wait....

Occidental Gran Bahia — ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Location: Shuttle to Beach - Samana - North Coast - Approximately 3 - 4 hrs hours from the Puerto Plata airport All-inclusive - 110 rooms - 7 suites Description from resort website: 2 restaurants - 2 bars - 2 sweet water Swimming pools - Free Transport to Cayo Levantado island |
| Occidental Gran Bahia | Sandra & Jess ~ Nova Scotia |
My 14 year old daughter and I stayed at the Gran Bahia in Samana at the beginning of march 2005 for a far too short week's vacation. This was my 7th trip to the DR, my 2nd to the Samana Region. I too was thrilled to see Charter service to Samana from Canadian gateways available once again! Bazaarly our skyservice flight from Halifax was under-booked, so we each had an entire row of seats to ourselves to stretch out on and sleep away our early flight time.
We arrived in Puerto Plata at 10am. This way our 3 1/2 hour drive down the Dominican north coast to Samana was during daylight hours. Fantastic! We had the entire van to ourselves! In my opinion it was like getting a free, private excursion! We passed through all the north coast towns, got to see dailey Dominican life unfolding, past farms, beautiful beaches, barber shops, sidewalk domino games and then wove our way around the lush mountains of the Samana peninsula.
The Hotel
My last three visits to the Dominican have been spent in mega resorts, which were brand new and beautiful with lots of restaurants and end endless activities to choose from...all good...but...the Gran Bahia was like coming home!
The Gran Bahia is perched on the edge of the Samana Bay, on a steep, lush hillside. It's a spectacular setting for an absolutely adorable hotel. The placement of antiques here and there throughout the hotel's public areas, fresh flowers and linen on the terrace tables, a selection of liquers to add to your coffee, a wide veranda with cozy wicker furniture where you can relax, take in the view of the bay and feel the breeze or shoot some pool...the friendliest staff EVER and two hotel cats all lend an air of home, not hotel.
The Hotel is older, british colonial style, peachy pink with miles of white gingerbread trim...which was constantly being painted during our visit...I don't envy that job! There are places here and there throughout the hotel showing a bit of wear and tear... (making it all the more like home ;) but the hotel is spotlessly clean and very charming.
Rooms
On arrival we were assigned a room on the backside of the hotel facing the road, but requested to be moved to an ocean facing room. The majority of rooms are ocean facing at this hotel, so by all means put in your request for an oceanview room, as your chances of getting one are very good. We were moved to our 3rd floor ocean facing room (#326) by around 3:00pm the following day. It was bright and clean. Our TV had audio problems the for first couple of days, but was remedied as soon as a part was obtained. Shower water pressure was great... but hot water was sometimes available, sometimes not. These two glitches didn't bother us in the least. We understand that the DR is a developing country without the infastructure that we're used to at home, we didn't come to the DR to watch TV and cool showers feel better in a humid climate anyway. In all honesty...the view from our balcony was nothing short of stunning. Panoramic views of Samana bay, the island of Cayo Levantado, and other islands, dolphins jumping, hazy mountians on the opposite shore...you could easily have thrown a stone into the bay from our balcony...like the view from a cruise ship stateroom...WOW! From our balcony in the mornings we had a bird's eye view of local fishermen casting their nets ...in the evening we could watch the Dominican kids playing catch on a beach to the right, and watch the sunset over the hills Los Haitises National Park. The balcony view alone was worth the trip! There were equally stunning vistas from the many landings and stairways of the hotel.
Dining
The buffet has 4 dining areas to choose from...2 indoor dining rooms, a roofed terrace that opens to a beautiful bay view, and a open air dining patio that overlooks the bay and pool area. There wasn't a huge variety at the buffet, but the food was excellent and there was certainly enough of a choice that you wouldn't go hungry. This hotel is not big on american style pizza and french fries type food. But there was always a good selection of delicious chicken, pork, beef, rice, beans, potatoes, pastas, salads, cooked vegatables and yummy deserts and ice cream. The white house wine was great and the coffee too! The dining room table and drink service was excellent. The a la carte' Italian dining (which you need reservations for) is seated on a veranda overlooking the pool and bay...very nice atmosphere...unfortunately I didn't get a chance to try it out. You can expect meal time visits from the two hotel cats...one of the cats in particular is a pro at mooching...and is getting very round! ;)
Bars
There are two bars, one by the pool that serves both as beach and pool bar, and a lobby bar. The pool bar staff are lots of fun. The lobby bartenders are excellent...we were sitting in the lobby one evening and one of the bartenders brought my daughter and I our favourite drinks without us even asking!
Staff
Because the hotel is smaller I found the staff get to know you better and you get to know them better...they are truly wonderful people...from the front desk staff, porters, housekeepers , animation crew, waiters and bar staff...some of the friendliest and most helpful staff I've encountered in all of my visits to the Dominican. Bring big tips! A good word for our Air Transat tour rep. too, Gershon.
The beach & Cayo Levantado
The hotel beach is down 2 flights of stairs from the pool deck. (It's a good idea to grab your drinks on the way down as the bar is at the top of the stairs). Please don't expect the endless white sands of Punta Cana. The beach is small with brown sand, but pretty. It's backed by a stone retaining wall and lots of lush vegetation for shade. There was a lack of loungers though, so if you're not an early riser expect to lounge on your towel, or you can usually nab a chair when the early lunch crowd leaves. On Sunday nights the hotel hosts a fun beach party and bonfire with drinks and dancing in the sand. The sea bottom is nice and sandy, no rocks or coral to stub your toes on. There is a nice view of Cayo Laventado from the beach, and on a bluff at the far end of the beach there is a pretty canary yellow villa which is privately owned. At certain times of the day there is enough surf for some mild but fun boogie boarding (you have to bring your own though). The hotel provides snorkelling gear and you can see a few fish around the bluff at the end of beach, but there are better reefs out off the island.
So... if you must have white sand and better snorkelling then the hotel offers 3 free daily boat transfers to Cayo Laventado island. It's about a 10 to 15 minute boat trip one way. The island is beautiful! Here you'll find a big beach of soft creamy, white sand and more spectacular views of the bay. There is a tent market on the island where you can buy crafts and all kinds of food and drink. Try a pina colada from the Amigo bar...they serve it in a scooped out pineapple and you get to eat the scoopings too! Expect to be approached by beach vendors here...if you're not interested in their offerings they will leave you be after a friendly but frim "no gracias." We enjoyed talking with them and practicing our spanish...one young vendor impressed us with knowing bits and pieces of english, german, italian and french and of course spanish!
Other Hotel Amenities
Some other hotel amenities worth mentioning...
internet service is available in the lobby in the evenings. There are one-armed bandits just below the lobby bar. There are nightly shows pool-side by the animation team that largely involve audience participation. As mentioned a beach party on Sunday's, and there was also a cocktail party/hotel management meet & greet in the lobby one evening which was a nice touch.
Some evenings there were a pair spanish guitarists roaming the dining area, and live piano playing in the lobby. There's small lobby gift shop and massage tent overlooking the bay.
Turn right through the hotel gates and cross the road to find another whole area owned by the hotel. Its' here you'll find the tennis courts, a small golf course, the hotel riding stables, and miles of lush, mountainous, ecological reserve to ride or trek through (free organized trekking excursions can be arranged at reception as well as horseback riding). Also at the top of a very steep stone road you'll find the hotel's villas. All hotel guests are welcome at the villas (you can stay up there if you don't mind the climb). The bay view is twice as stunning from the villas because of it's elevation. It's here you'll find the second swimming pool. There is also a lovely relaxing club house with comfy lounging area, public washroom and self serve bar, including water, ice, softdrinks, assorted liqour and beer on tap...mix em how you like em!
Attractions
The Samana area has a lot to offer in itself. We purposely booked to be there during whale season. Samana bay has one of the world's densest humpback whale populations between January and mid March. If you're there during this time you must go see the whales.
In one small area we saw at least ten different whales, mother's with calves, breaching males...it was amazing!
Other attractions in the region worth visiting are: Los Haitises National Park, which is the Caribbreans' largest mangrove and has lots of cool caves and islands to explore. Playa Rincon... rated one of the world's top ten most beautiful beaches, El Limon waterfall in the heart of Samana's lush mountians. The French town of Las Terrenas with it's beautiful beach and funky french boutiques, and the town of Samana with it's pretty waterfront and crazy marketpl! ace.
In conclusion...I can't wait to get back to beautiful Samana Bay and will definitely be staying at the very charming Gran Bahia Hotel!
I have lots of photos of the hotel and area at this web address... http://groups.msn.com/sandysoceanplayground/granbahiasamanadr.msnw?Page=1
| Occidental Gran Bahia | Bonnie ~ Toronto |
My husband and I with two of our friends first discovered this resort in 1994. We fell in love with the charm of the hotel and the fabulous ocean view at first sight. My husband and I returned here for the next four consecutive years and then sadly it was not offered by any of the Canadian charters. This year the four of us planned to vacation together again and were thrilled to find that Air Transat was again offering Gran Bahia again.
Flying with Air Transat was a pleasant change from Skyservice. The seats are more spacious and are leather covered so that you don't have to be a contortionist to climb into the window seat. They served a warm lunch and offered the headsets for only a dollar.
We arrived at Puerto Plata airport at 10 p.m. and found our bus for the 4 hour bus ride to the hotel. We asked the bus driver to stop three times along the route to either have a cigarette, find a washroom, or buy a beverage. He was most obliging and we gave him a $10 US for his trouble.
Words cannot describe how beautiful this hotel is. I would recommend that you look up the Occidental sight on the internet and take the virtual tour of this hotel. From the marble floors to the mahogany staircase it is superb. The rooms are large and bright and from a good sized balcony you have a breath taking view of the ocean and islands. You are so close to the water that I think you could probably throw a ball and have it land in the water. Our rooms were on the third floor so at night we would leave the doors open and listen to the waves breaking over a small outcrop of rocks.
The food at the buffet restaurant was good and often excellent. The tables are in a lattice sided room that overlooks the water. Quite wonderful!
The beach is excellent. It is long enough to go for a pleasant stroll, lots of deep sand and plenty of shade. It is easy to walk in and out of the water as there are none of those deep troughs at the water's edge. The only problem was that there aren't enough lounge chairs. I counted only 30. I know that they experienced a bad hurricane last year and perhaps they lost a lot of their chairs.
The pool is directly in front of the hotel and overlooks the ocean as well. There is next to no shade around the pool and the hotel has constructed a stage platform for the entertainment at the only side of the pool that is shaded by trees. This stage has been painted black and I can only imagine how hot it must be on bare feet at high noon. The last time that we were there there were umbrellas around the pool and I can only guess that they also were lost to the hurricane.
We took two excursions while we were there, the first of which was a day long "safari" to a beach and a banana plantation at the north end of the peninsula. Getting there was definitely the best part. They stock the 4 wheel drive truck with a large cooler filled with soft drinks and a huge bottle of rum. Our husbands asked to stop at the first "convenience store" and filled the cooler with Presidente beer instead. We had nine fun loving youth on board and this was an inspired move. I can't imagine what the trip might have been like had they consumed a gallon of rum before lunch. We travelled a road that I would have thought only a billy goat could manage and a couple of times we forded streams. Often, very young children would come out of their houses and wave and we wished that we had brought something to give to them. We finally stopped at a refreshment station where they sold coffee beans, vanilla, rum etc. They also sold bags of lollipops so we bought a few bags to give to the children on our return trip. We didn't wonder why they would be selling something like lollipops. Silly us. On our return trip, children would come running when they heard the truck and we ran out of lollipops half way back.
The second trip was a boat ride across to the mangrove forests on the far side of the bay. It was a bright, calm day and the boat ride was excellent.
All four of us are already planning to return to Gran Bahia next year and I can't wait
| Occidental Gran Bahia | Linda and Wayne ~ Canada |
My husband and I just returned from the Occidental Gran Bahia in Samana for New Years from December 27th to January 3rd.
The ocean views were the most beautiful we've seen in our ten years of Caribbean travel. Everywhere you looked the view was amazing. Around the end of January to middle of March, you can see lots of Hump Back whales right from the hotel. This would be a great time to go to Samana to see the whales.
The rooms were kept very clean. We always had warm water as well as a good air conditioner. We were on the third floor (superior room) with an amazing view. We couldn't stop looking out the patio door the whole week we were there as the view was beautiful.
The food was better than we expected (don't expect five star food). We never had a problem finding something to eat. We ate at the Italian Restaurant, which was good. There is only one a la carte here.
The beach is rather small, but very nice. Plus you can take a boat each day to Cayo Levendo, which is beautiful. This transfer is included in your all-inclusive. Cayo Levendo is also called Bacardi Island, as Bacardi rum used this island for their commercial and bottle label.
The hotel put on a beautiful New Years Eve gala, lobster and shrimp buffet, salsa band in the lobby, and fireworks at midnight. They even served soup around 1am to sober people up.
The staff was amazing, very helpful and very friendly. One of the nicest staff we’ve ever seen and we have stayed at five star resorts.
Our Air Transat Representative, Greshin, was excellent. He really cared about you having a great vacation.
The resort itself is very clean, however, it is becoming a bit worn and needs a renovation, especially the rooms. We did take the malaria drug (Chiloquin), but did not see one mosquito. We even had rain for a full day and about three nights, and no mosquitoes.
The town of Samana is so beautiful. The ocean is visible from the town, which makes it so nice. You have to see it to believe it. We would have liked to spend more time in the town, but one week goes so fast. We will be back.
The only downfall to this trip is the bus ride (van), three long hours with no bathroom. We didn't see much on our arrival as it was dark, however, on our departure (in the daylight), there was much to see. The first hour of the return trip from Samana to Puerta Plata is beautiful, then you go through Cabarete and Sosua, which are nice, but in between is very long. They are building a new international airport in Samana, as well as new resorts. This will definitely be the next hot spot for the Dominican Republic. It was nice to see Samana before it becomes too touristy.
Conclusion, we would definitely recommend this resort due to the amazing views, however, keep in mind you are going to a 3 1/2 star resort that needs a renovation, and you get what you pay for.

We have just returned from the Dominican, we stayed at the Tropical Casa Laguna Hotel. Having read reports before we went we have some reservations. when we arrived we were very pleasantly surprised, the check in was very efficient and we were quickly shown to our room. This was quite large and spacious, a double bed for us and a single for my 11year old son. The back balcony was overlooking the neighbours piece of land which was quite unkempt, but the front terrace more than made up for that, we overlooked the main pool and the stage area, but could also see the bar area and the lower pool. We dropped our bags and went to explore, the pool and the gardens were kept immaculate at all times. We crossed the 'main road' easily but at times it can be busy and you do need to watch out for the motorbikes. The beach is lovely, the sellers do approach you on a regular basis but a polite 'no thank you' and they move on. If you buy from them barter with them they usually drop the price by 50%. The food at the hotel was OK, yes as others have said a bit repetitive, but you are in another country and you can not expect home cooking, we went with a very open mind, took everything in our stride and had a fantastic holiday. The animation team are brilliant, very amusing and very friendly. Anyone going, please give Luis, Christopher, Wellington, Kenya, Ellie and Sexy Boy our Love - Phil, Judith & John. We also went on some of the trips- many available, we booked through Hurra Travel on the main street - cheaper than the reps. The rooms are cleaned every day and the maid are very pleasant, people that did have small problems with rooms or air conditioning units, the maintenance team were quick and effective to repair. We simply did not want to come home at the end of the 2 weeks, other families did though. It would not be everybody's cup of tea- but if you go to enjoy yourself - you will. We did not go out in the evenings but some of the younger couples did and had a ball by all accounts - coming back at 5am from the clubs. Talking to other holiday makers there were more people that had a good time than the few that did not enjoy the holiday. If anyone wants to know anything further or more photographs, please email me at judithnaylor@blueyonder.co.uk - I am more than happy to help if I can, I could write for ever, and would go back tomorrow. Thanks

Before departing to the Dominican Republic, I was skeptical of my travel agent´s recommendations, therefore I arrived and stayed for one night only at a hotel in Cabarete. Realizing that my requirements for peace, quiet, and down time had not been interpreted accurately, I discovered a small Hotel/Resort, Laguna Beach Resort in Playa Laguna. It is for this reason I am writing to your site, in order to share with others who are seeking time out from the maddening crowds.
Laguna Beach Resort is small, but like most fine objects, is a gem for its location (5 minutes to Sosua, and 12 to Cabarete), and one finds the beach is beautifully clean, with no bodies to bump into, the food at the Blackstone Bar and Grill is excellent and the service which is primordial for any Hotel/Resort, is superb.
I live a very hectic life and my vacations need to be the time when I can totally disconnect and relax.
I am most happy with all that was provided by the Staff and quite frankly, had I not found that peace and quiet, I would be writing a negative comment about some of the hotels I observed in Cabarete or Sosua.

Got back on 24 Jan 2005 after 14 days all inclusive at the Beach Resort. Weather generally showery but with 3 days of almost continual rain balanced with 4 days of almost continual sunshine. Have previously stayed in large 4* hotel in the sheltered environment of Playa Dorada, near Puerto Plata, and therefore have some experience of what to expect in the Dominican Republic. Our Casa Laguna Beach Resort room (Room 310) was on the second floor with a magnificent view of the beach and ocean. (The downside was that we had to sleep with ear plugs as otherwise the noise of the waves, coupled with the nearby main street, disturbed our sleep). However this was a small price for having a spotlessly clean room and very good towel, sheet and room maintenance/cleaning services. When it rains the hotel has very limited facilities inside and there is no place for people to gather. You even have to got outside to the bar and get wet to get a drink. However the bedroom TV had a good selection of programmes.
The food in the buffet restaurant was of an acceptable standard, but nothing special, and the alternative of the alternating mexican/italian, was not significantly different and unfortunately also became buffet style when we arrived at the hotel. Overall very good value for money. My main concern was that I foolishly trusted a beach seller of day trips/tours called Raymond (always wears a dark shirt and long trousers and tried to look smarter than the average seller of jewellry etc). I and another couple gave him money for a trip. First the trip was postponed because of the bad weather and on the revised date no coach came to collect us and surprise surprise we did not see Raymond in the following 3 days before we had to fly home. He therefore owes us some money which I hope to collect next year on my return to Cabarete!!! If you see him please remind him.

My wife and I spent two weeks in paradise. We stayed at Eden Bay to celebrate Christmas 2005 and to see the New Year in.
The food was fantastic throughout our stay and thanks to those who toiled much of the day to bring us speciality dishes such as barbecued pig. The surf and turf for New Year Eve included succulent lobster and the most tender of steaks only slightly upstaged the wonderful Christmas Eve dinner. Chef’s decorative work for these tantalising dishes was much praised.
The company was absolutely splendid ranging from an absolutely mad Frenchman from New York who led a Christmas Eve karaoke version of YMCA with a cast supported by the generous free wine cocktails or spirits.. How many drinks did it take to get an Englishman to impersonate a German requesting another German (the singer and keyboard player) for more oompha music instead of the pop classics?
The resort is a haven for naturalists and naturists. What an experience it was to observe, in the buff and warm sunshine, the butterflies swarming around their special bushes. Those who were lifestylers enjoyed their pursuit of happiness discreetly. All mixed happily in the daily activities organised by Peggy and Mike. Perhaps I should clarify these included water volley, crab racing, testicle throwing and croquet. Ashamed to say as an English couple we had never before played croquet and didn’t realise what an evil aggressive game it is!
Thanks to Peggy for her safety introduction to snorkelling around the exquisite coral reefs surrounding the bay. The variety of fish we saw was quite outstanding. From Peggy’s well maintained crabbery we were able to film a rehousing dispute between hermit crabs and a and actual change of shells.
The 7.30 am power walks were an ideal start to the day for the early birds. Don’t be put off and think it is a ‘funny walk’ race. Mike leads at a reasonable pace and was quite tolerant of those who puffed themselves out taking the steps as a racing challenge.
The extensive grounds have a wealth of tropical plants and fruits and on an expert conducted tour we were able to pluck a papaya that subsequently made a magnificent cocktail.
We also met Boobette and her partner Nudini who provided the magic to our holiday..
The warmth and friendship from all staff is what one expects from the Dominican Republic. The standards of cleanliness and service from Eden Bay are really outstanding. Patricia the Manager and her front of the house staff were attentive to all our needs and they ensured smoothest of transfers to and from the airport. (Perhaps smoothest is not the right word to describe DR roads!)
Our villa, right on the beach, was one of the nicest places we have stayed at.
Certainly Eden Bay is on our books for a return visit.
