February 2008
We took a week long vacation to Hotetur Dorado Club in January 2008. Our party included myself, my husband, our 20 month old daughter, my mom and dad and my best friend. First impressions are everything, but second impressions can be redeeming. We arrived at the resort at around noon time on January 19th. We flew out of Ottawa with Go Travel Direct and Zoom Airlines.
ROOMS – The rooms were ready before 3pm but when we got them we were very disappointed.
We had asked for rooms close to one another in our pre booking requests and we were sort of together - my parents had room 606 which was very poor (the a/c unit sounded like a jet engine taking off when it did work and they had no shower head, it was just a pipe coming out of the wall). My husband, myself and our daughter were in 603 (which you would think was close - but not very it was around 2 corners and at the opposite side of my parents’ room). It was very dark and tiny as well, we barely had room to fit the pack'n'play for our daughter to sleep in (which we were lucky we brought, as the 1 crib they had was being used for another baby staying at the resort). My best friend was placed in room 703 which was even more of a dungeon and in a totally different building. We made sure to be put at top priority of being changed rooms ASAP -- Joanne from Go Travel Direct helped us out a lot. On the 22nd, myself, my husband and our daughter as well as my best friend were moved into our new rooms which were a HUGE improvement. We had room 216 which was a junior suite and my best friend was placed in 206 which was adjoining with our room. It was still on the first floor and had a nice balcony. The bedroom was separate from the living area which (was in itself was massive!). My parents were moved on the 23rd to the 2nd floor of building 6 in room 623, another junior suite - it smelled very musty in the main room but the bedroom was fine. The bathrooms were a huge improvement in all the rooms. My parents’ balcony faced the street but it wasn't a big deal and they had great sunshine coming through the windows in the morning. If you have back/neck problems you might want to look at bringing your own pillow as some of them can be a bit flat, but the bedding was clean and the mattresses weren’t anything special but weren’t too bad. So, aside from the problem with the first set of rooms, the second set of rooms (after some persuasion) were great. Nothing fancy, but for the price of this resort, and the little amount of time we really spend in the rooms… they were sufficient.
FOOD – All the restaurants were great. We ate at the a la carte “Magua” and ordered steak - I do not recommend ordering this - it was very stringy and chewy and I had about 3 bites, I did not like it at all. My best friend had the chicken and fish kabobs and said they were really good. Service was excellent, and the soups and breads were fantastic. We ate at the beach bar restaurant as well on one night and it was VERY good. My husband and I shared the Seafood Paella and it was delicious and very filling (more then enough for 2 people). We’d highly recommend this dish as it is a specialty and was very, very tasty.
The main buffet was excellent and my parents, who are picky about food, found it to have a wide variety and high quality of food. Breakfast had eggs to order, french toast, pancakes, EXCELLENT omelets, bacon, cereals, yogurt, lots of fresh fruit, and plenty of other choices. Lunches had a mix of everything and were never fully repeated throughout the whole week. Dinners were great and usually had one grilled or carved specialty item per day. For example, one day they were carving roast turkey, the next day would be fish fillet on the grill, the following day would be grilled chicken, etc. Most days there were hamburgers available fresh off the grill. Lots of excellent pasta choices at the pasta bar, and the garlic there is very potent! Salads were always fresh and the veggies nicely washed and very crisp. The grilled veggies were always excellent and perfectly cooked – never mushy, never too raw. None of us ever had reason to complain about the food at this hotel with the exception of the steak mentioned above. Sure, it’s not 5-star quality in terms of selection but this is a small resort, and the quality of the food and taste more than makes up for the sometimes mediocre presentation. The food was delicious and this is the first time my husband didn’t get sick on the food at a resort on vacation!
We ate at the beach bar restaurant on many occasions – the food there was also excellent. They had a choice of hamburger, cheeseburger, fried chicken, ham and cheese sandwich, hotdog and vegetable sandwich. They came accompanied with a massive side of fries. We were never disappointed.
DRINKS – All the drinks were fantastic, the coffee was very, very strong – it is not Santo Domingo it is liquid Maxwell house. I recommend using a lot of milk or getting the cappuccino instead of straight coffee. They had a specialty alcoholic drink each day and they were very good as well. The white and red house wines were ok… kind of bland but still decent. Wines can be had at lunch or dinner. We brought our “Bubba Keg” travel mugs and they worked great! We had our names on them as we all had them so the bartenders learned who we were pretty quickly and served us right away.
POOL – The pool was fantastic. Very clean, refreshing and more then enough space for everyone. The children’s pool was also very nice with a waterfall that kept our daughter entertained! We were able to get an excellent spot by the pool each day, usually with a thatched umbrella, which was good as our baby needed to stay in the shade most of the time.
BEACH – The beach was amazing. My parents have been on many vacations and they raved about how clean this one was in comparison to many others they have been on. We had a lounger helper each day that set them up for us wherever we wanted. There were more than enough palm trees to shade the area for those that wanted. The water was beautiful and we were able to go snorkeling and see some small fish one day. The beach was a 3-4 minute walk from the hotel. We’ve been at resorts ON the beach that take longer to get to the beach from your room.
TOURS – We took the city tour with Martin Espinal and it was great! We got to see the Brugal Rum factory, the Amber Museum (which was extremely over priced – do not buy anything from there if you are looking for the right price), we took the cable car up to the top and were able to stop at some shops to buy things as well as stop at a local supermarket to buy our coffee beans to bring home (this is the cheapest place to buy coffee and snack foods – the beach vendors and small shops have to buy it somewhere, and you know that it’s somewhere locals go – the supermarket!) The cable-car is a MUST SEE if you are in the Puerto Plata area. The views were spectacular and well worth the trip up to the top. The cable car felt safe and the operators were very professional and courteous.
Overall, our trip was a great success and we had a fantastic time. For the price, Hotetur Dorado Club was a nice place to stay. We heard they might be selling the hotel to another company in the near future, so we are unsure how to take that news. When we go back to Puerto Plata, the Dorado Club will be one place we’ll consider although we might opt for a 4* such as the Breezes (again) just to have that little bit extra consistency. For our third time to the north coast, this trip was still very fun, and we’d definitely recommend the Dorado Club to those looking for a cheap getaway. The sun is the same everywhere, and this hotel is on one of the best beaches on the coast!

I went to this hotel from December 22 to Dec. 29 2007, I was surprise for a 3 stars. People at the hotel are great, the hotel is very clean and the buffet was o.k.
The beach was very nice and lot of chair. Even if the hotel is not directly on the beach (it's only a 3 minutes walk) they installed a bar & restaurant on the beach, so you dont have to go to the hotel for your drink or meals at lunch time. Bar is open from 10:00 to 24:00
I had a great room with a mezzanine, the bed were on the 2nd stair with a complete bathroom and wardrobe. The first floor was large and clean with kitchen table, bar, tv, . Very large balcony.
Good choice for a week vacation. Will not go for 2 weeks because I was missing the pianist and a big lobby ( I am use to 4stars and they have that kind of entertainment).

Don't always believe what you read. the Dorado Club is great for the money. It is quiet, clean, comfy and has everything you need. The food was fine, a bit repeatitive. The previous review really runs this place down, and that's not fair. Yes if you're someone who sits round the pool all day and does not venture out anywhere, then this hotel does not have the ameneties other bigger hotels have, but who wants to stay in? After all its just somewhere to lay your head! Our room was great, really clean, housekeeping was excellent and we had no problems what so ever.

ON the 26/6/07 i had the miss fortune to have to spend the night in this hotel. No way would i class this has a 3* hotel. My husband and i arrived at this hotel with our four year old grandson and was shown to our room which we found to be rather dirty and very much below a 3* rating. the fridge which was in the room had mould growing in it all the windows where dirty along with the sink bath and toilet. when we went for our evening meal we found that there was very little to be had and what there was i would not of feed to my dog consequently we all ended up going hungry for the night which is really not acceptable considering we had a child who had to go with out

June 2007
We recently returned from another very fine 2 week holiday at the Dorado Club
We flew out of Halifax with Sunquest on a CANJET aircraft. No problems either way, cramped as usual, no hot meal and not much entertainment.
It rained for the first three or four days we were there however we all tried hard not to let that upset us. Even with the rain we were able to get to the beach for some time each day. The location of the Dorado Club being right next to the shopping plaza certainly helped as well especially during these rainy periods. The last 8 days or so of the vacation were gorgeous.
As all the other reviews indicate, this property is a safe bet. A solid 3 to three and a half star. Small cosy hotel, friendly efficient staff, clean adequate rooms and just a short walk to the beach. The beach reconstruction has helped. Any sea weed or other debris was cleaned up by workers daily -usually by 11am -. The hotel is in need of an update in some areas. At the beach some loungers could be replaced and more garbage bins should be available there. Around the hotel and pool area, the patio stones could be re painted. These are not complaints, just areas that we have noted that if looked after, could certainly help add a half star rating to this hotel
The food was great at all the restaurants. Osvoldo is the main waiter at the beach bar at night and also helps out in the other specialty restaurant, the Magua. Daniel is the head waiter at the Buffet restaurant and he and his staff were all very helpful and friendly. Julien is the head overseer for the resultants and bar. The front desk manager is Freddy and he is assisted by Martin. Any room problems, just see them.
During this trip and as with past years there. the worst part for us was the pathway condition to the beach when it rained. It became a soggy muddy mess very quickly. Repairs here should take priority.
The Dorado Club remains for us a very safe home away from home. As the previous review states, you will not be disappointed with your stay there.

February 2007
My husband and I just returned from a week at the Hotetur Dorado Club. We had booked a three star “wild card” holiday with Go Travel Direct (resort assigned upon arrival) for the sum of $229.00 + $270 fees & tax pp. There was some apprehension but we decided we were going to have an adventure and make the best of what came our way.
Property
The resort is clean and has all the basics you need for a good holiday……………a good size pool, several bars, a buffet, two specialty restaurants and a beach bar/restaurant. There are shops and services, including medical, on the premises. The grounds have lots of mature trees. However, there were no flower gardens.
Staff
All the staff members we encountered were pleasant, polite and accommodating. Everyone worked very hard to ensure we had a good time.
Entertainment
The animation team provides daily games around the pool and beach and keeps the atmosphere lively. In the evening there are the usual shows with lots of audience participation. One evening a professional dance troupe performed a fine programme. On another evening a band entertained us.
After the shows the Disco and bar is open from midnight to 7 AM. Snacks are also available there. We never went to the Disco as the fun started after our bedtime.
Rooms
Our clean and very quiet second floor suite (large bedroom, huge living room with hide-a-bed couch & dining area, bathroom and furnished balcony) with ocean view was a nice treat. We were in building #2. The bathroom could use some up dating but was clean and free of mold. The availability of hot water was sporadic depending on demand. The furnishings were “tired” but reasonably comfortable.
We appreciated having lots of cupboard and dresser space so that we could unpack completely. We have stayed in renovated 4 star resorts where we had to live out of our suitcases, which was very frustrating.
Pools
There are 2 pools, one for adults and the other just for kids. The larger pool has 2 sections so even if there were games going on one could still swim on the other side without running interference. A red cross trained lifeguard was on duty and he ensured the children were safe.
Food
The quality and variety of food available was reasonably good. Some days the offerings were better than others. At breakfast there was an omelet station and the chef also cooked mountains of bacon to order. There were the other usual breakfast offerings of cereal, breads, scrambled eggs, fruit and cheese etc. At lunch and dinner the salad bar was very basic………..lettuce, tomatoes, grated carrots, grated cabbage, avocado with the choice of 3 dressings. There was always a pasta dish (At night there was a pasta station where the chef made dishes to order.) and pizza. Every day there was a different chicken dish as well as other choices of fish or meat. Several times a week very decent paella was served. For dessert there were selections of cakes and cookies and of course, fresh fruit.
At lunch and dinner a server might appear and take your beverage order. More often than not we helped ourselves from kegs. White and red wine and beer were available as well as a great assortment of soft drinks, coffee, tea, juices and milk.
Specialty Restaurants
Two restaurants are available and each is very good. At night, the beach restaurant is transformed into the Caribe. At this romantic setting Mediterranean dishes are served.
The other specialty restaurant, the Magua, is near the lobby. In a quiet, relaxed atmosphere grilled foods and pizza are served. It has a salad bar and a self-serve dessert table.
Bars
One bar is open at the pool and another is located at the beach. After the evening show the Magua is converted into a disco where snack foods and drink are available from midnight to 7 AM. Drinks were also served in the entertainment area during the shows. At all the bars there are the usual assortments of mixed drinks, beer, wine and soft drinks.
Animation/Entertainment
During the day the animation team provides guests with silly games and activities around the pool and the beach. At night there are the usual shows involving audience participation. One night a professional dance troupe was brought in and on another occasion there was a band.
Beach
The beach is a three minute walk from the pool area. The warm ocean is easily accessible for young and old alike; the ocean floor is smooth and sandy. The Dorado Club beach benefited from the reconstruction programme and is very pretty.
All in all we had a great holiday where we made new friends. We feel we had excellent value for our money.
Those who complain about the Dorado Club and would like to see many improvements should consider the consequences. Up grades, renovations and refurbs cost money which would in turn drive up the cost of a holiday there. The Hotetur Dorado Club offers an affordable package for those looking for a budget holiday in the tropics. Whether you are in a 3, 4 or 5 star resort everyone still enjoys the same sunshine, ocean and lively atmosphere of the Dominican Republic.

April 2006
Arrived home April 7th after a two week holiday.
Holiday was thru Sunquest as sold by selloffvacations.com. Melanie in Moncton is a great rep. Fight was out of Halifax with CanJet Airlines - Thanks to Norma and her staff for their help- After de-icing, along with my cousin and her husband from New Denmark, we left Halifax at 0630 and arrived in POP at about 1115. No much leg room on the plane, no duty free and you had to rent the portable DVD players. Meal was the typical cold breakfast, muffin, cheese, juice, etc.. No real complaints except for the length of the flight.
Arrived at the Dorado Club around 1230. Warm and sunny about 27 degrees. A cousin and her husband from Kamloops and friends from England met at the reception desk with a couple of cold ones. Great. Nice to see them as well.. Freddy the receptions manager had our rooms ready and check in was very smooth. Throughout the stay Freddy and his staff Martin et al.. handled all problems(what few they where). The hotel is your basic 3star but would require so little work to bring it up at least 1 more star. Paint and re doing of the tiles and new drapes and furniture in the rooms and a few other small details could really help this place.
The food was excellent as far as we all were concerned, excellent soup and the pasta bar was really well received. The staff, from Daniel at the buffet to Julien his boss and also Osvoldo at the beach bar and Magua restaurant were outstanding and catered to our every need. I'm sure we all put on a couple of extra pounds. We celebrated three of our groups birthdays' while there. Our friend from England and also for Daniel from the buffet restaurant and for a friend of our cousins' who had come with them from Kamlops.
The weather cannot be controlled however it did not seem as hot as it was last year when we were there. It rained quite frequently especially at night and got cloudy with some wind a few days. We all left with great tans and it sure beat the cold we were and I'm sorry to say still frequently get here in New Brunswick.
I still say that the beach area in front of the Dorado Club beach bar and the stretch in front of Playa Naco, is the best in the whole complex especially for swimming and just enough waves. There were some sea weed being washed up from time to time but the cleaners do their best to rake and gather it up in the morning. The beach bar opened at 10am and served all the normal local drinks, cervesa, rums, whiskeys, pina coladas, banana mamma's, etc.. The normal chicken, fries, burgers, and hot dogs could be had from about 1130am to 5pm. No complaints at all.
We went often to the plaza, what a great place to go just for a diversion from the beach hotel life, especially when it's raining. We took Daniel and all his family to the Pizza Hut one night, they really enjoyed it. It was nice to see and meet them again.
For entertainment Donkey and James Bond worked very hard everyday to keep all guests busy and involved- no pressure but guests make their vacations as much fun as they want to, it's nice to get involved and do some of their games/skits. Volleyball both at the beach and pool were really very good. We also went to the orange shacks several times, like always, barter, barter. barter. Saw Marco Polo and bought a few things. We went to the casino both at Jack Tar and Occidental Playa Dorado. Won at the Occidental, lost at the Jack Tar. The best trip was up the Cable Car. Booked thru Nelson on the beach, great guy and the best prices - 25us per person, this included the trip to the rum factory, a trip to the cigar making store, amber and jewellery store and entry to the cable car. We paid 15$ US for a guide for all of us to show us around on top of the mountain. Of all the trips we have taken while there over the years this is as good as any of them. The outback safari is good as well but this one right up there. Great views and scenery.
Anyhow, I hope some of the crowd whom were with us send their own review but other than a few hic-cups this was a very good vacation and I personally have no problem with the hotel. It, like a lot of the others are getting tired and needs some tender loving care and updating/upgrading. As a side note we went into the Viva Wyndham Playa Dorada to see our friend Alejandro(receptions Manager) and also our friends from Cape Breton. This is a nice newly renovated hotel. By all accounts they had a great week and would recommend the Viva. Wherever you go, relax and have a good vacation.

July 2005
This is my review of the DORADO CLUB HOTEL, visited in
Mach 2005 by myself and my girlfiend, our ages are 20
(me) and 27 (her)with Thomas Cook (British) for only
£600 each for 2 weeks!!!!!
This is a brilliant site and we thought we should
contribute to it - before we left, I used this site
extensively to check out the dorado club and others -
really helpful!
The Dorado Club Hotel is, in my opinon, excellent for
an average budget. I would rate it 3/4 *. (4* for
british as I know that americans generally need higher standards in ratings.) I had no major complaints at all, even though some of the reviews I read were pretty scathing!!
Firstly it is in the Playa Dorado Complex, an
excellent complex. Ths hotel is literally three mins
from the beach, which is a fantastic beach, everything
u would expect. White sand, gorgeous clear sea. Lots
of loungers and lots of space too. Free Snorkels!
Very reasonable watersports (Parasailing, for example,
£20)
Ok so here we go!
1) The transfer from the airport - short.
2) Arrival and check in - quick, helpful, pleasant.
3) Reception area - very nice indeed - you will be
pleased when the coach drives up to this as opposed to
some of the others we passed!!
4) ROOM - EXCELLENT!! We were shocked to not only have
a huge lounge (with a sort of bar) with a huge
balcony, but a bedroom and a big bathroom as well. In
the rooms u get sky (useful for those - many -
hangovers) and a suite with a coffee table. Also air conditioning. Could be updated, but fine for me.
Shower and bath were clean and powerful shower. Bed
was very comfy. Headboard will not with stand much
though. (!!!) ONLY complaint - walls not soundproof.
Heard baby next door a few times in night. And vica
versa! But rooms are in nice blocks, ice water
machines
and rooms are cleaned everyday, very well.
5) STAFF - All wonderful. Very helpful, got to know
us quite well - the fun team are fantastic, "donkey"
is nice if u know what I mean girls!!
6) FOOD - also very good. Got slightly repetitive
after 2 weeks, but still perfectly eatable. Different
cultural buffet every night, lots of choice and some
of the food was really excellent. Never made it to
breakfast but heard that was nice with lots of fresh
fruit.
Excellent a la carte restaurant (can use once a week),
does not cost extra, very nice food and good service.
7) MEDICAL - Hope u dont need this as much as we
did!!!! There is a doctor on site who is there all
the time, excellent and very useful, but she will
charge about £40/ $80 for a consultation ONLY and then
there is treatment to pay for - not cheap! Still
reassuring to have her there though.
8) EXCURSIONS - Boy did we do a lot of these!! There
are lots of tour operators who hang around - the key -
HAGGLE. Say "so and so offered it for less" or "my
friend said u quoted her this" or whatever. The jeep
safari, which u should do, only cost us about £20
each. They will usually start off asking about £40.
DONT book with the tour operators, haggle with locals,
they are much cheaper!
9) NIGHTLIFE - Important if u are our age I guess!!
Well, free bar of course, so easy to get quite pissed
and contrary to what I was expecting, it is quite
lively at night. You can drink at the bar, see the
show (there is one every night - a lot of thought goes
into them) and then go to Hemmingways.
Hemingways deserves a good description in itself!
It is in the PLAZA, the middle of the Dorado Complex.
It (the plaza) has an overpriced jewellery shop,
clothes shops, bankc (2 ATMS, very useful), tour
operating booths and hemmingways, an american
bar/nightclub. This gets very busy on fridays and
saturdays, rightly so! Good mix of european dance and
latin american music. Good to get very drunk and
stager home - the hotel is basically opposite!!
The shows the fun team put on are always good -
kareoke, dancing competitions, and THE show to see -
the Michael Jackson Show!! Famous - and for a good
reason! DONT miss it!
11) POOL - not too big but big enough. They do
lambada and merengue lessons by the pool every day,
which are excellent. There are poolside games, but
these are not intrusive and they don't hassle u to
take part.
Overall, this was a fantastic holiday. Weather was
excellent, trips were excellent (go into Puerto Plata
if u can), the staff were excellent and so helpful,
the food was good and we didn't want to leave!!
If you go have fun and be good - and if you cant be
good - be careful!

April 2005
We've just returned from our annual 2 weeks at the Dorado Club. Basically we've been going there for the last 10 years. Since 1995 we've stayed twice at the Occidental Playa Dorado and two years ago went to Punta Cana and stayed at the Carabella. Each other time has been here at the Dorado Club. This hotel offers pretty well all that we require in a holiday spot. The beach area is arguably the best in the whole complex. Just enough waves to make it fun but not the wind or blowing sand like at the point near Paradise or up by the Ibeorstar/Coral Marien hotels. It is a good 3 star hotel. The rooms, walkways etc. do need to be refreshed, (a new coat of paint, walkway tiles redone and so on), however it does not claim to be a 5 star. We read most of the reviews for other hotels and note that there are many similar problems at higher rated hotels. Reviews from other hotels like the Jack Tar and so on also state that the rooms require sprucing up. This year 2 of our cousins and husbands and friends from England joined us. All had an excellent time, no real complaints. The quality of the draft beer and of the house wines and liquor were the areas of most concern. The beer (draft) said Presidente' but it was of the lower quality. Even the bartenders and waiter staff confirmed this. As indicated we have been going there for a lot of years and have addressed the problems with the General Manager, who knows if anything will change. That being said we like the staff and if the price remains in our range we'll go back again. Our maid service was excellent, always done by 2pm - our room had the spiral staircase to the second level. The room #234 had two baths - great- it wasn't noisy yet was near everything. The food was very good. None of our group got sick. Soups were excellent and of course there's always chicken. We had a couple of gala nights, with shrimp. We frequently had mashed potatoes. We went twice to the specality (steak and pizza) restaurant. Our friend from England celebrated her birthday so we took our friend Daniel and his wife from the dining room with us and we all went to the Villas Dorado fro a lovely dinner in their speciality restaurant. We ate one time at the Pizza Hut in the mall with Daniel and all his family. Very good One of the people with us had a cold when we arrived and had to deal with that while there. Our flight was out of Halifax with Sunquest using Can Jet Aircraft and crew. We did have concerns there - no in-flight duty free, no hot meals and no movie or entertainment going down and on the way back we had to rent individual DVD players for 15$. Not good. Also the flight times were an hour longer that with the normal sun carriers. Usually it takes about 4 hours with Skyservice or Air Transat but these took 5 or more. If anyone reading this or other reviews about this hotel has any concerns, don't.. it is a good, reasonable hotel with good staff and tasty food. Remember get your food, eggs and such well cooked. Any problems with your rooms, go see Freddy, the rooms manager, the dining room captains, Julien and Daniel will take care of any other problems you may have. No matter where you go, to this hotel or where ever, have a good safe holiday.. PS we all and other some friends rom Cape Breton who were staying at the Playo Naco went on a tour of the newly opeed Viva Wyndam Playa Dorado, - right next door - and met with our good friend Alejandro Feliz who is the Rooms manager there. Thats a nice hotel for anyone thinking about it. See him. he'll treat you well.

February 2005
Hi all.
We were there from February 8 to 22, 2005.
We had a great time.
Pros:
The location is right in the middle of Playa Dorada, right across from the Plaza. It’s literally a three-minute walk to the beach on the pathway between the Playa Naco and the sports field / helicopter pad belonging to another hotel (not sure which one).
The staff is excellent, very warm and friendly. We don’t normally take much notice of resort animation teams, but the Vibes Tribe were great, Juan (Bejeeezus!) and Ruth especially.
The food, at both the buffet restaurant as well as the Magua Steak House is very good. No problems or complaints.
It’s a small resort, very easy to meet people.
Cons:
Our room had only two bedside lamps, both of which had very dim energy-saving bulbs. We couldn’t even read in the room. We checked in Tuesday around 5:00 PM. I complained Wednesday morning, and also asked for a second blanket on the bed. On Thursday, someone came in and took the lampshade off one of the lamps; no blanket. On Friday at dinner, a management rep was handing out customer satisfaction surveys. We gave all sections of the hotel a good review, except for the lighting and blanket issue. I handed the form back to the rep and told her of the problems. On Saturday morning, we had nice 75-watt bulbs in our lamps (it made a huge difference), and a blanket.
Our room overlooked the parking lot, between Playa Naco and our hotel. A motorcycle gang (I think their vests said Nativos) checked-in the first weekend (yes, we were surprised too). Didn’t see much of them around the hotel, but their bikes were noisy coming and going. It wasn’t a big deal.
Overall, I would say it’s very good value for a three-star resort. Everyone we spoke with had good things to say, although one family did change rooms 3 times. We wouldn’t hesitate to go back.

February 2005
We just returned from there on Feb 15, 05
Well this hotel does have what it needs to make a great place to stay if they would just utilize it in need of renovation badly. We changed rooms 3 times. And the room photo on any website I pulled up on this resort is not like any one I had been in. However someone did tell me that, that room they show does exists...but is for the timeshare people only.
We had heard about a lot of thefts from the DR in general from other travellers....and it was on our last day that we got to experience that.....We were all packed up left loaded bags in our room and then we noticed our camera and a bottle of expensive perfume went missing. I could careless of the items BUT LEAVE the FILM.
Food got boring after time...it was okay, needs more selection on the dessert items... Blue jello red jello, jello cakes in all colours. FUN team works hard and are good with kids. All and all it was agood trip other than the theft.

January 2005
Hi Debbie,
We just got back from Dorado Beach Club on Sun 16.1.05.
We should have been staying at the Tropical Luperon Beach Hotel, however we were met at the Airport by the Sunset Reps who were openly honest with us and said we were unable to be taken to the Luperon because of "Quality Issues"!!!
So we arrived at the Dorado shattered from a long bumpy flight because of turbulance, so accepted to staying where recommended.
The staff we all encountered semmed to be lovely helpful people, such a shame they have to work so hard trying to please unhappy holidaymakers having to stay in such grotty surroundings, the rooms were as clean as ever could be given the state of them.
There seemed to be quite a lot of problems with thefts !! thankfully we were not personally affected, other than we helped out a gentleman who had had his Meptformin (diabetes drugs) stolen along with cash etc. Diabetes drugs seem to be a high target as for the Dominican Diabetics this is a very costly drug. My Hubby is diabetic but I had taken extra tablets "just in case of any delays" we were able to leave the guy in question enough tablets till his return home 3 days later.
Anyone going out the Dorado Villas, well best of luck as there were several families that had demanded to be moved to the Beach Club as conditions in the Villas were even worse, though on the Villa's good side apparently the food was much better than the poor choice and quality we were getting.
All I can say to the owners of the Dorado Beach is, "Come on get your act together, you have lovely rooms a great position, some of the most pleasant staff we have ever encountered on our travels. Get things cleaned, repaired and decorated, get rid of the criminal activity, make the rooms and safes totally secure and you have a good place for people to have a nice relaxing holiday.
This was our first ever holiday to the Dominican Republic we were so looking forward to it, now I am oh so glad to be home and will sadly never venture there again, we have never ever had a bad holiday before but as they say "first time for everything"
Oh and by the way the weather to top it all was dreadful, torrential rain every day for two weeks, with the odd hour or two here and there os sun, trust us to go there when "they have never seen the like of it before"

July 2004
We spent two weeks at Club Dorado, which we found to be run down and in need of serious reno's , oh by the way March 2-16/04 and would not go there again as it is not even a 3 star hotel...however, it has great potential and a decent location... We blamed Sunquest for the enticing review in their brochure otherwise we would have entertained Punta Goleta and I might add we did see other 3 star hotels, which were much nicer and deserving of the rating.. Just a short note we changed rooms 4 times, so our first weeks was a run a round.. We had serious discussion with the desk and even the chain owners and they understood our problem and reacted quite favorably... Note: Sunquest and the other tour companies have dropped Club Dorado from their brochure, but do offer Villa's Dorado......................Good luck...DC

June 2004
A quite basic accomodtion, but nice and clean and quite quiet. We were very lucky on arriving as we were given a suite which was huge! We didn't get a sea view which we asked for, but then again it is in the centre of the Playa Dorada complex so you can't expect to look right out over the sea from there! Still we had a lovely balcony which was shaded by exotic trees,( which was a god send as it was in the high 30's when we were there. The air conditioning was lovely, but rather noisy, but we got used to it after a couple of days and didn't really notice it much ). The Playa Dorada beach is lovely, only 2 mins walk away.
If you want to do any excursions the Jeep Safari is a must ( as long as you are a good swimmer). You are taken into the rain forest and you swim in rivers, climb waterfalls with the full force of water tumbling down on you. Coming back is the best bit as you get to slide down the natural rock slides of the waterfall. Brilliant! Knackering but brilliant ! Thanks to Julio and Gary for keeping me alive !
Good for the older children, my son is 10 and quite a good swimmer, but swimming against the current he found a little difficult, so thanks to Julio and Gary for giving the occasional piggy back swim ! They are so fit !!!
The Playa Grande excursion was a wonderful way to relax after the jeep safari. This was a boat ride through the Gri Gri Lagoon, and then a 10 min drive to Playa Grande Beach, where lunch was served in the shade of the Palm trees. (Rice and chicken again, but if you paid for it, you could have lobster which we opted for.) We had a few hours here before returning to the hotel. This was one of the most beautiful beaches I have ever come across.
We also did Paradise Island, which is a 30 min very fast speedboat trip out to the island. Take plenty of high factor sun cream here as it is literally a sandbank in the middle of the ocean, with only a few huts for shade. We did this on our second day and got VERY VERY burnt, because of the strong breeze you don't realise how hot it is. We couldn't move for days !! The snorkelling here is amazing. If you buy some bread on one of the stops in the coach and feed it to the fish here, they appear from no where and take the bread from your hands...apparantly they like bananas too !
The Dominican republic is the BEST holiday i have ever had. I would love to go back, but wouldn't go all inclusive again, as we found the hotel food (and apparantly according to the locals, most of the hotels) to be very bland and repeatitive. We ended up eating alot in Hemingways in the shopping plaza and Pizza Hut. There is only so much rice and chicken you can eat ! Sayng this, there was always plently of different breads and croissants and loads of fresh fruit at breakfast, but we gave the hot food a miss, as it was weird meats and eggie things, never found out what it was supposed to be, and what we thought was toast was very sweet and sickly. The fresh fruit juices were lovely.
But overall a brilliant holiday, the only down side was when we arrived back at Gatwick and there were no stairs to get us off the plane! Typical England !

Dominican Republic is a great place to go on holiday, for adults and for us kids! If you don't want to laze around on the beach or have a nice swim in the sea then don't worry, you wont get bored because there are plenty of fun tours to go on. Personaly, I liked the Jeep Safari best. You get to have a lovely drive (quite bumpy so be prepared to hold on) through the towns and villages of the Dominican Republic. Then after the drive you get off at a big, wide river(don't worry, not too deep at all! ) and have a gorgeous trek through the rainforest. Then you go on to a little pool and climb the first waterfall. The tour guide and the water guide help everyone up the waterfalls, even young kids like me! You go up 7 levels and the brave ones take the leap of faith off the 8th level.
On the way down you slide down the watefalls and jump off the last one. BEST TRIP EVER!!!

Warm and friendly
Just got back! Didn't want to leave! We stayed at (Hotetur) Dorado Club for the last 2 weeks of April 2004. Took Skyservice- bring your own headphones for the movie (and snacks!). It's the smallest hotel in the playa dorada complex, but it's a sure winner if you want a quiet family or couple type atmosphere. This is not the place if you want to party. (Of course there are discos like the Crazy Moon if you do). Very warm and attentive hotel staff. Oh yeah, and if you're Canadian, they'll love ya because the owners are Canadian. The fun team (Scooby, Shaggy, Winston and the 2 girls) are just great. They work so hard (10-12 hours a day) to make your stay an enjoyable one. Note: Winston is usually rude to overweight people, especially women, and needs a good spanking! Entertainment was great! We especially enjoyed the Micheal Jackson show. Could've sworn it was him! The dance shows are also great, including the ones from the fun team. Do participate in the crazy games or shows at night- you can win free rum, t-shirts, hats, etc. Great variety of food- something for everyone. Banana Mamas and super sweet pineapple was refreshing after a day in the sun. AH yes and the beach was every so wonderful! We actually passed by other resorts, such as neighboring Naco and the Flamenco. Both were seemingly more impressive because they were bigger hotels with more pools and more services, but lack the charm and warmth of Dorado Club. Here are some other tips: 1) Don't book your tours with your tour rep. Find Johnny and be prepared to haggle. We saved a bundle for the exact same tours! Loved the JEEP SAFARI & Paradise Island. The Jeep tour is for the adventuresome as there is a 20 minute hike to and from the waterfall as well as CLIMBING waterfalls (7 exactly) with the help of the waterguides. (and bring money for those waterguides because they work hard and only rely on tips for money). Be prepared for a 2 hour bus ride to and from Paradise island and a fun butt slapping time in the speedboat. All worth it for an exquisite time snorkeling! Get Black Banana as your tour guide- you'll be happy you did! Do bring toys, candy & school supplies for there are many children in need. Also bring some gooodies like soap, shampoo, toothbrushes and toothpaste, etc. for the chamber maid. 2) Do visit Puerto Plata & Sosua. You have to exit the complex and catch the bus or gua gua on the main highway. Gua guas are mini-vans (or cars) which either go to Sosua or Puerto Plata. It can be quite a crowded ride, but is a real cultural experience. Do inquire about the cost before you get in: it should be 10 pesos to Puerto Plata per person and 20-25 to Sosua. Don't enlist any of the children to act as a guide-it's illegal. There are tour guides in central park who will show you the Amber Musueum, Fort, and stores for a reasonable fee. By the way, you can take a taxi, but it will cost you $10 US and up. 3) Don't change all of your money to pesos at once, and yes you can bring Candian dollars (although you have to pay a departure tax of $20 in US currency ONLY). 4) For souvenir shopping, don't go to the store at the hotel. The mall across the street has prices that are higher than what you might pay in Canada, but are rather reasonable compared to the prices you will pay in Puerto Plata & Sosua. Also, REMEmBER: you will have to haggle for a great price. If they say 800, you say 200, then they say 600, you say 400 etc. The supermercado or super market has good prices, especially if you want food or sunscreen. 5) If the path to the beach gets muddy, take a stroll through Naco to get to the beach instead. All in all, you get what you pay for: the decor is in need of change, but everything else is just fabulous! A big thanks to all you trip advisors who helped us to choose a great vacation! Any questions? Drop us a line!

April 2004
Brilliant!!!
Unless you are very fussy, you will love this place. The staff are very friendly and eager to help.
The rooms , while not 5 star , are very spacious and clean. If you detect a strange smell on arrival , it is because rooms are fumigated for creepy crawlies etc - this will soon disappear - in fact in the full 2 weeks we were there we only had one "visitor" - a very disorientated bat!!
Maid service is daily , towels are changed every day , with seperate towels for beach/pool.The maids shape your handtowels into swans and leave fresh flowers in your bathroom!
There is plenty of cupboard space and a satellite tv (we did not bother with this at all).We had a lovely balcony surrounded by lush vegetation.
Food is plentiful and varied - something for everyone including the kids.I loved the fresh fruit for breakfast. We both put on half a stone each!
The beach is just a short stroll away - beautiful , fringed by palm trees , and the Atlantic sea is very warm.
We took advantage of the free horseriding - a great way to spend the morning , and went on a jeep safari (recommended) don't forget to take sweets or little gifts for the local children - if you don't you'll wish you had.
A range of trips can be booked form the shopping plaza just over the road at rates much cheaper than your rep will offer.
We were a bit worried about visiting over the Easter period as we had heard that the locals "took over" - a big holiday for them .However , it was no more busy than Majorca in August ( just Easter Thursday, Friday , Sat & Sun) and they added something special to the holiday atmosphere. In fact all nationalities mixed and got on well together.
I have saved the best till last - the "Fun Team" - Winston , Scooby , Shaggy , Sofia and Arisleda. We had read about these characters before we left the UK and were a bit dubious as we do not usually like to get roped in for games etc - but they were great people and didn't put any pressure on you to join in if you did't want to .Winston deserves his own tv show - what a character. We are still quoting his catchphrases now "Oh Bejesus " etc.
I enjoyed aqua aerobics in the pool every day with Scooby , and Sofia organised games for the kids.Shaggy was so sweet I could have brought him home with me.
Evening entertainment was varied - Live band at the pool , local dancers , merengue , bingo , karaoke, a magician etc.
We had a great holiday and plan to return next year.

April 2004
As most people indicate, the Dorado Club is exactly what the travel books say it is. It's small and quite friendly. For the most part the rooms are functional. Maid service is what it is, I believe they clean rooms in a certain order each day so it depends on the time of day yours is scheduled to be cleaned. Unfortunately ours was around 2 or later each day. Tipping which we did every day, didn't seem to make our room be cleaned quicker. That being said we had face cloths each day and all was well. Air Conditioner worked but was noisy. TV worked but like always you have to ask for the remote. Had to pay for the safe key but the deposit for the towels was refundable. One thing to be aware of is if you have a problem with anything in your room, they will change you. The receptions manager is Freddy and the assistant is Martin, both are easy to deal with. We have been to this resort several times. We like no line ups for the buffet or bar and the rooms are basically the same as the Playa Dorada or Playa Naco, yet its a couple 100$ cheaper. Staff in the buffet or bars are very accommodating. Julien is the Manager of food services and bar facilities, Daniel a particular nice man and good friend is day captain and next in line and the night buffet captain is Candidito(sp?). They are the ones who wear neck ties. The beach area is the as good as it is in the whole complex. In our opinion, better that at Jack Tar or Marien Coral or Ibeorstar. Also the beach area at Gran Ventan's is not as deep and is quite narrow. The wind blows more often in the point area at the Paradise. The worst part of the Dorado Club is when it rains hard (like we had for the first 3 days) the path to the beach becomes almost impassible. I talked to the management about this and apparently they are having a problem with Playa Naco however they are aware and something is supposed to be done. WHO KNOWS - Dominican
time. The food is not bad. We like the fact that they often offer mashed
potatoes, something other resorts don't often have. Last year we went to Punta Cana and while the beach was terrific and the hotel, (Carabella) was fine, the ambiance was not there. At the Dorado Club (Playa Dorado Complex), you don't feel hemmed in to your own resort. You can walk anywhere and the plaza is there with all it has to offer - a place to go anytime, especially when it rains, the pizza hut, Hemingway's etc. Anyhow, we feel that the Dorado Club is a good enough place for the cost. Others resorts are fine and have some additional perks, for example our friends from Cape Breton decided to go to the Playa Naco this year. Their rooms were perhaps a little fresher than ours, also their fidges were stocked daily with beer, pop, and water, they also had a toaster and a microwave. These perks are nice. Anyhow for anyone reading this review, the Dorado Club is fine. You really get to meet people because of it's size. We met lovely people, Mick and Brenda, from England and we are keeping in contact with them. No matter where you go, have a great vacation, you deserve it.

March 2004
We have just recently returned from a 1 week stay at Dorado Club resort on March 16, 2004. I was traveling with my daughter and her friend both aged 19 years. We had done this trip as a last minuet deal and the price was right. I had the opportunity to read some of the reviews before we left Canada and tried to go with an open mind, after all we were going for the sunshine and warm climate.
We traveled on Skyservice and was pleased with the professional manner in which we were treated. We have also stayed at other resorts in the Dominician, both of which were 4 * (Grand Vantana, Pureto Plata, & LTI, Puna Cana) you have to remember that there is no comparison with a 3 * to a 4 * first off.
This hotel is very dated and old some of the rooms are to say the least offensive, and not even up to a 3* class, the first room that they showed us that we were to stay in was not fit, it was on the ground floor and the smell of must and mildew was abundant. I told the staff that I would not stay in that room and my daughter had breathing problems and in no time would be very ill. In no time at all we were given an excellent room which was a suite, it had 2 baths (great for 2 young ladies fighting over the shower) and 2 floors, the girls thought it was wonderful, so did I. The staff at Dorado Club is wonderful always helpful and wanting to please. Is that not what it is all about !!!
The food is the same as all the other resorts that I had stayed on before, there was always something that we could find to eat and there was lots.
The entertainment was well lets say that the fun team tried and it was entertaining... The fun team is exceptional, they will ask if you would like to participate, if you do not they do not bug you to do so.
The hotel it self is very close to the plaza so we did our shopping there, the vendors on the beach did become annoying after a bit, way to many of them and we were on vacation and really did not wish to be disturbed, but with that being said you just say not interested and on there way they go.
We did meet some wonderful people from all over the world mostly from the UK. What a nice bunch of people to share your holiday with.
I believe that a lot could be done with this hotel to upgrade and make it more appealing to us cold North Americians. I sure hope that it will be sometime in the future, as it is such a waste of a beautiful location.
Over all my thought is that I would not return to Dorado, but with that being said I would go if I was to have the same room that I was given on our trip. But as for the staff, the people we meet, and the price, I may reconsider.

February 2004
This hotel is exactly what the brochure says it is .The hotel was small and friendly. We did get a bad room in block 9 to start with but we were soon moved to a lovely room in block 3.
The pool area was very clean and had loads of sun loungers . The pool bar had a great selection of cocktails. Dont start at the top of the cocktail list as soon as you arrive though because tha bar tenders are very generous with the spirits and their rum is 75% proof . If you want to get out of the complex and see the rest of the dominican republic then book your excursions through your holiday rep. You may find them cheaper in the Plaza but you are not covered by your holiday insurance. We went on the whale watching trip with an afternoon on bacardi island. This was amazing. If you suffer from motion sickness then i strongly suggest you take some tablets before you get on the boat.We also went on the catermaran day trip which was also a great day out.We met some great people and we fed tropical fish from our hands while snorkelling .
On the whole we had a great time and we will definately be going back to the dominican republic. Here are a few tips that i wish i had been told before we arrived
1.Make sure you have some $1 notes before you arrive because the porters will need tipping and they dont accept coins.
2. Make sure you put plenty of sun cream on if you go on any boat trips , if you dont you will burn .
3.If you like a cup of tea then take your own tea bags . Many thanks to Anne and Martin who gave me some .
4.The Pina Colada can be served with rum or without ,but it is a natural laxative so dont drink too many in one day!!!!!!!!!!!!!
5.We took boots own insect repellent with us and we had no problems. apparently the flying insects are immune to the jungle fever brand.
6.Book your A la Carte meal as soon as you arrive. We left it a couple of days and by then every day was booked up .
7. Try the casino in the Paradise hotel .Its a great night out and as long as you are playing the tables the food and drinks are free.
8. Make use of all the sport facilities .They are free!!!!!!
9. Have a great time

February 2004
We just returned from the Dorado Club in Puerto Plata and had a great time. The resort is located in the Playa Dorada complex and is very central. It is located across from the plaza and we found that very convenient. The younger girls in our group also liked the location as Hemmingways and the Crazy Moon bars were also very close to us. The resort is very dated and some of the rooms are not the best, and all the rooms differ in quality. When we got there we were given a room on the ground floor that was very old and smelled very musty. Our friends were given a suite on the third floor and it was very nice with living room, bar area, two baths and two bedrooms. They were traveling with their daughter and a friend and the girls wanted their own room ( away from the parents ha ha) so we moved in with our friends and had a great week there. We went with a group of 7 and did have a great time. The activity team are very good and keep you entertained. The shows at night were just ok and I have seen better but they were ok. The food was great and I was really surprised at how good it was for a three star resort. The pool is smaller than other resorts but very clean and they do have a children's pool. I did notice the crowd here to be more seniors then younger people. The walk to the beach was very quick and actually only 2 minutes at the most. The beach bar was very nice and I did enjoy how you could sit and look at the water here. Actually I thought it was one of the best beach bars on the beach for location. The food at the beach bar was chicken and hamburgers. The chicken was simple delicious and you must try it.
As for trips we didn't do too much except did a shopping trip one day to Puerto Plata and Sousa. I will tell you this I found the prices very high to buy in Sosua and in Puerto Plata and found the cheapest prices in the plaza across the road from the hotel. These prices were far cheaper before even bartering. Although in the plaza some places wouldn't barter but that was ok and as it was often cheaper than the bartering price in the towns or on the beach. So really check prices.
So if you are looking for a nice hotel, great for the price , good entertainment then you will be happy here. The staff were very friendly. We probably won't go back as we like to try different places but don't be afraid of going to this resort. Have Fun.
