Camino del Sol - CabareteAshley ~ Canada
February 2007

A friend and I just got back from staying at the Camino Del Sol, Cabarete for a week 27 January 07 to 4th February 07) and we had the best time. We went there with no expectations knowing it was a 3 star hotel and was pleasantly surprised. When we arrived at the hotel we were greeted by music and dancing staff that served us fruit juice. It didn't take us long to check in a get to our room, which was very clean, it had air-conditioned, a hair dryer and TV with numerous English channels including HBO. The food was great, lots of fresh salads and fruit every day and with a great selection at the buffet with fish, chicken, tons of veggies, different kinds of rice potatoes, and great desserts. They also had special areas like the omelette bar in the morning and pasta and pizza bar at lunch and the evening. The atmosphere around the resort was great everyone says "Hola" to you whether they work there or were a guest. We did spend most of our time on the beach during the day and by the pool after the beach closed. As for the guys selling tours and jewellery, we just told them no and they went on there way, a couple times they just sat with us and talked with no pressure to buy. We did venture off the resort at night and went to a couple of the local restaurant's on the same street next to the front reception, called Charlie's Bar and the Bar and Grill where we had drinks, played pool and got offered free shooters!!! We took the shuttle in to Cabarete during the day to buy some souvenirs and a few odds and ends that we needed and of course you have to bargin with them, which is half to fun....ultimately this is their lively hood and they do want your business. We felt brave enough to take a motor cycle taxi back to the resort which was a blast and cost us about 40 pesos each. We also went to Sosua to the disco which was very lively, to say the least. All in all this was a great vacation and I was very sad to leave...can't wait to go back!

Camino del Sol - CabareteD .Thomas
July 2006

Having just returned from the Dominican Republic, Puerto Plata, this is one holiday tat I would strongly not recommend. I have been to many locations all over the world and this by far is one of the worst. This is the following problems I encountered. Firstly the brochure states there are many things to do and see when there is not at all much. We drove in most directions for over tow hours and all we kept coming across was run down roads, very few shops (all selling the same things - nothing any good), and people all trying to entice to taking a ride with them beware of taxi driers one tried to charge us 700 pesos for a ride that should cost 100 peso.

One word of advice AVIOD "FREDDYS TOURS", CAMINO DEL SOL STREET NO.1, CABARETE. I paid over $120US for a white-water rafting trip and all I got was a 7 hour drive and less than one hour on water, when we were promised a minimum of "4 and a half hours". When I went the next day to complain all they said was sorry and before I left there was another American couple who paid for a tour that did not even end up turning up. We saw this couple the following evening as they were staying at the same resort and they mentioned they go no refund and no tour, and were very angry. There is one outside the Pariso Del Sol hotel on your left and one on your right, they are both owned by the same people and are RIPOFF'S. The one on you left has two boys there and both speak good English, there names are "******** and ************" AVIOD these SCAMSTERS, there charm is only there until they have your money.

Flying out from Gatwick was awafuil as there was no clear directions whatsoever and having booked with The Holiday Place, there was no clear indication on where to colelect tickets, we therefore ended up waiintg over two hours in three differnnt ques. As you may have read the hotel we stayed at was the Camino Del Sol in Puerto Plata. The hotel itself was not too bad however the food was same nearly every night we were there, and the main restaurant was very badly lit at night which was a small candle on each table. I think they were going for the romantic look but hardly practical when you can just about see the plate you are eating from. The other issues with the hotel were the television signal hardly worked all the time we were there, and when we went to reception the always promised there was someone coming that same day to fix it, one morning when we wet white water rafting we requested a breakfast / lunch box, as we were leaving before the breakfast restaurant opened, however when we got the lunch box it was filled with hundreds of small insects, they offered another and this only had about 20 insects in that one, needless to say we went without breakfast. People here do apologise and seem quick to apologise however this does not make things better when you have broken a shower and television in your room, with no one to fix it for your entire holiday. I am really tolerant but sometimes this as just too much.

Camino del Sol - CabareteRose
February 2006

I was at this hotel on January 28, 2006 to February,2006. my experience was awful. the personnel at front desk who name was ******* was very rude and unprofessional. I ignore you at all time when you approach for service. I forgot his last name but will never forget his rude attitude. It was hard to find someone who spoke English. Room condition was awful and when we check in on Saturday we were put in a villa which was like a dungeon with no towel or toilet paper. The next day our travel agent representative promise us that our rooms will be change by Monday and explained that the hotel was full booked due to holiday weekend. The new room was ok but one bed was broken and the bed and sheets smell old and funky. The food was nothing to talk about and the same everyday. The liquor tasted like it was water down to last longer and drinks was again nothing to talk about. no fresh fruit juice or fresh like fruits at buffet table. I would not recommend this hotel to my enemy.

Camino del Sol - CabareteDee from Swindon
May 2005

my partner and I went to this hotel last October and we had a great time.
The staff were very friendly and our maid Anna could not do enough for us.
WE WENT KNOWING THAT THIS WAS A VERY POOR COUNTRY. These folks earn in a month what we would take home in a week.

We went to peurto plato in a taxi it cost us all of £5.00 the driver stayed with the whole day.He took us to all the local places of interest,he even found us a lovley seafood place where you could pick your own lobster,we then carried on to the amber museum which by the way is a great place to visit it is very well done and the shop at the end is just great. We left in the morning at nine and returned about4.30

it was a brilliant day needless to say we gave this chap more than a fiver he was an absolute gem. The hotel was great and our chefs were very good We were there when the hurricane stuck and these people could not have been better ,Despite a lot of devastation they stay cheerful and get on with things. We brits could learn a lot from these folks

Paraiso del Sol - Cabarete  BB and group ~ Winnipeg, Canada
March 2008

We are from Winnipeg, Canada and stayed at the Paraiso del Sol just east of Cabarete from March 12-26th, 2008. We chose this all inclusive because of the price, Cabarete location and because it offered singles’ rates. Eight of us stayed at this resort, two couples and four singles. It is really hard to find affordable single rates and the Paraiso del Sol offered this. Initially, because of so many poor reviews we had read on this resort, I was very apprehensive but as this was my 7th trip to the Dominican and my boyfriend’s 10th, we knew that you have to take the poor reviews with a grain of salt.

This was a great resort and all of us plan to return to it next year. We have stayed at other Cabarete area resorts (Wyndham Tangerine) and PdelS location was great as it is out of Cabarete so there are no early morning night noises from nearby resorts or bars in town but close enough to take a cab or moped or free shuttle.

The beach is great with miles to walk in either direction. Waves can be big but that is what to expect at times from the ocean……..it is a big, powerful, beautiful ocean and makes you wonder at the power of Mother Nature. Cabarete is a free shuttle or a 50 pesos moped ride away so if you like calm beach then you can go there. The ocean view is great.

The resort was great, staff helpful and friendly and there are three pools that kept us cool - a huge more shallow pool and a nice deep pool closer to the beach as well as another near the restaurant that we didn’t go to.

Our rooms were clean, which is my main concern on any trip. (The women in our group liked the fact that bleach was used on the floors in our rooms and hallways). The single people in our group had rooms with two double beds so they really liked the extra space. Air conditioners help but be advised that the air is turned off during the day as this is a country that does not have services we take for granted here in Canada, like drinkable tap water, great electrical, etc. We were never in our rooms during the day anyway except to change for supper and to sleep. As long as air is circulating, a ceiling fan or air conditioner will do the trick to get the air moving.

No complaints at all about our room, showers, or anything. Pillows were a bit lumpy but after a day in the sun and sand, I could have slept on the floor. No one lost weight on the trip and my compliments go out to the chefs and kitchen workers on this resort who gave us tasty, nutritious meals with local, fresh produce in, I am sure, a non-air-conditioned kitchen prep area. Beets and carrots grow well in the sandy soil and all of us in our group ate fresh chicken at both lunch and supper every day. There is a big taste and texture difference between fresh Dominican poultry/fish versus the frozen chicken that we get here in Canada. The breads were made fresh each day and Swiss meringue is the icing they use on their cakes. The rice pudding is the stovetop kind and was every bit as good as my grandma’s. Chicken, fish, rice and beans and fresh cabbage salad are Dominican staples and are nutritious and good for you. Pork is also fresh and tasty. You will not lose weight unless you choose to eat fresh, juicy pineapple and rice every day.

This is an underdeveloped country that is doing its best to satisfy everyone that comes and visits. It is unfair of tourists to expect the things we take for granted in our countries of origin to be readily available in this country. What is available in the Dominican is: wonderful people, sun and sand, fresh produce and fruit, inexpensive Brugel rum and any other kinds of spirits and beautiful breathtaking scenery. All in our group like to support the Dominicans so would buy beer from a local for ½ or less the price that they would charge at a restaurant or bar run by non-Dominicans. Ice cold Dominican made El Presidente is a great beer!!!

My boyfriend and I always go to the Cabarete area as we have made friends with three local families and have become very close to them. We had the humbling experience to be taken to Miguel’s and Biganos’ homes and offered their most wonderful hospitality this year. The Dominican people are kind and “Please” and “Thank You”, just like at home, are the Magic Words.

One of our close friends is Willy (Wilson) Zapete and his wife, Ingris. Willy runs the Jungle River Tours out of Islabon, about two miles east of the Paraiso del Sol – a quick cab or moped ride. Every two week vacation we make use of Willy and his great staff to enjoy the Islabon and Jessica river boat tour which takes us to the mouth where the Jessica meets the ocean. There we spend time on the beach, have a few coco locos (rum in a fresh coconut) and just chill out or swim. Then Willy brings us back to dock and you can opt in with an extra cost and have Ingris and her friend cook you up the greatest Dominican lunch – sea bass, chicken, salad, rice and beans and fresh crab i.e. we met the crab fisherman on the boat on the Jessica and luckily had a plastic bag to put the freshly caught crab. Willy made a quick call to Ingris to put the water on for the crab and we had crab that doesn’t get much fresher.

Willy also took our group of 8 and 5 others from the resort along with Ingris, little Juan, Willy’s two nieces and two of his helpers for a day long trip to the most fantastic beaches. Other tour groups offer this trip to Playa Grande beach, Diamond Beach but Willy took us to three other beaches that we had never been to. Had a great lunch at Playa Grande and were able to buy Brugel rum hats which are unavailable in Canada. Great, fantastic day with our Canadian and Dominican “family”!!!!!!! Another tour we did was take three children from Miguel’s family on the boat down the rivers to the beach (their first time in a boat) and beach hut. They had a great time and Willy and his staff made sure they felt comfortable and happy. Willy knew their auntie and cousins!!!! The day after we left some others from the resort wanted about a 3 hour shopping spree in one of the towns east of Cabarete so they got Willy to arrange this with beaches and lunch to follow.

For the past seven years, we only do tours with Willy whether it is to beaches, the mouth of the Jessica, Santiago, the waterfalls, etc. as he is a local and we know the money is going to the Dominican people with no middle man. His prices are very reasonable and much lower than others. More importantly, he is absolutely trustworthy and a great diplomat for the Dominican people and the beautiful island. He speaks Spanish but also English and German with a bit of other languages as well. With Willy, you can customize your tour i.e. have lunch and alcohol included; lunch or no lunch, etc. It is best to meet with him to go over it all and then to confirm it. You may need to put a bit of money down and Willy is too honest to every renege on a deal. Once he gets to know you, like us, you pay at the end of the trip unless he needs money upfront to rent the bus, etc.

Willy’s number is 809-667-1960. You can phone from the front lobby phone. Just tell the front desk staff that you want to place a local call and dial 667-1960. Ingris may answer or one of his staff who may not speak English, so just tell them you want a tour and that Gerry and Bonnie told you about it!!!! I don’t believe he is allowed to advertise in the resorts but it is well worth the price and dependability that come with it.

All in all we had a great time and two of the people from our group even bought into one of the time shares on the resort. At Paraiso del Sol, there are NO high pressure tactics like at the Wyndham or other resorts. That was our main reason for not returning to the Wyndham this year.

Easter week: We were there during Easter. Well……..…..it was an experience. The resort became so full of city dwellers from Santiago and other areas that wanted/needed a weekend get away. It was a continual party from the time they arrived till the time they left (Thursday night to late Sunday afternoon). Luckily we had a day tour with Willy one day and escaped to a nice bar next door to the Paraiso del Sol for another day – there is a pool there for customers’ use as well. But if crowds, continual noise day and night and aggressive behaviour to Paraiso del Sol staff are not up your alley, avoid Easter week in the Dominican!!!! Our group and many others have decided to plan future trips before or after Easter as it can be quite overwhelming with crowds, noise and attitudes that some of us may not be used to or enjoy.

All of us enjoyed this resort and plan on returning next March. Enjoy your vacation. All the very best……

February 2008

First of all, I can't believe how picky some people can be. Your vacation is what you make of it!

Anyways, like most of you I searched almost every website to find out everything i could about this hotel. I was very worried about going because of all the bad reviews, but i figured.. for such a great price, can it really be that bad?

I just got home and my review is: 10/10!!! I loved every minute of it, and never wanted to leave. Yes, there were pros and cons to our resort.. but i found the pros outweighed the cons BY FAR and i would go back to this resort any day - in fact my friends and I are planning to go again soon.

Okay, so I'll start with the bad:

ROOMS:
-No air conditioning in our room, however this didn't really bother us. The fan worked, and it got quite cool at night so we left our patio door open to let in air (some mornings I would wake up shivering!) So a/c is NOT necessary. But most rooms do have - we just aren't the type of people to complain about small things ..so we dealt with it.
-like others have said, the pillows are a bit hard to sleep on.. i just brought my own pillow case, and most of the time when I got into bed it was late and I was exhausted so I passed right out without noticing!

FOOD:
-The room where the food is kept is quite hot. My friends and I got there right when it opened so we knew the food would be fresh - i wouldn't trust the lunchmeat or cheese after about 20 minutes in that heat!
-A La Carte restaurant basically has the same food as the buffet but has no flavour - don't waste your time!

BUGS:
-Mosquitos get pretty bad at night, bring bug spray!

BEACH:
-yes, there is some debris on the beach..however, like most public beaches, its caused by people who don't pick up after themselves (straws, napkins, wrappers), and things from the ocean that have washed up on the shore - I did see people cleaning the beach

HOURS:
I wish it was 24 hour snack bar, inbetween meals I found myself to get really hungry

EMPLOYEES:
-Although they are very very very nice, some are a bit aggressive and will hug and kiss you and tell you they love you
- if you don't like it just tell them 'no' and they won't bother you (same goes with the vendors on the beach!) -Language barrier sometimes (although, most do know english very well!)

Everything about this resort I loved. The scenery, the kindness of everyone... my friends and I lost our keys a couple times and the security guards were very helpful in finding them. The maid was always cleaning our room and the food was really good - especially the bread!!!!! (home made..delicious!). My friends and I befriended the Animation Team and they took us to a club in Sasoua (SO FUN)..we paid $15 per person (cab there and back, cover for bar) and they watched over us to make sure we were safe. The shows were hilarious, I quite enjoyed them. The activities by the pool are always fun, we were regulars in water aerobics.

The employees work really really hard, long hours, and all they want to do is make sure you have the best vacation. Sure, the resort isn't a 5 star - but the service you get from the people, the culture you experience while there, and the overall atmosphere of the place makes up for it.

They are upgrading the place, since there are now new owners. Honestly, I was skeptical too - but you won't regret it. For the money we paid ($700 all inclusive, including taxes, Sunwing, from Toronto) It was definately worth it.

Banana Mama's are the best drink! Make sure you say "mucho rumo"! No complaints in the drink department!

Charlie's down the road from the resort has good ham sandwiches after the bar closes in the resort at 1am.

The beach is very wavy, but absolutely gorgeous. The waves are powerful, but very nice. Go to Cabarete early in your vacation to check out that beach, it's very beautiful too.

Hope this helps!!

January 2008

Location: Approximately 1 hour from PP airport. The resort is approximately 15 minutes outside of Caberte and 30 minutes from Sousa. There is a free shuttle to Cabarete from the hotel that runs at 10, 11, and 2. Return trips at 11, 2 and 4. Taxi into Caberte for approximately $15 each way. Some people walked the beach back from town and it apparently takes about 1.5 hours.

Grounds: The hotel is divided into two sections. The older section is on the beach side and includes villas, the “regular” rooms, the reception, the main buffet restaurant, one pool bar, and the snack bar (beach bar). This side has a smaller pool next to the beach. The was another buffet restaurant and a disco which were not open during our stay and did not look like they were opened for some time. The grounds at the hotel were not well maintained in this section as most sections appeared to be closed. Across a small street was the newer section which contained the “superior” rooms, as well a bigger pool (that is pictured on the website), a pool bar and the stage area. The pool bar on this side closed at 1:00 am and on the beach side the bar closed at 5 pm. The newer sections were better maintained and more work was starting on our second week. It was a 5 minute stroll to the beach from our side. Internet was available for 50 pesos for 20 minutes. The telephones often did not work, although Edward at the reception would let you use the main phone.

Pools: There are two pool areas (and another smaller pool behind the reception that was not open). The pool by the beach was well maintained and quieter and had shade. The chairs here were in poor condition and not very plentiful. The main pool on the other side was also well maintained, very big however; there is little shade to be found. There were enough chairs at this pool, but again they were not in good shape. At the main pool is where all the activities took place.

Beach: The beach was not well maintained. During our visit there was no clean up and as a result the beach was littered with lots of debris. There was a bon fire one night and the staff just left the remains. The chairs at the beach had seen better days and you had to drag your own chair to where you wanted to place it. There were also not that many chairs to be had. This beach is not one in which you can swim easily and the waves will knock you off your feet even at knee level. Swim and wade with caution. There is a lifeguard.

Rooms: We had a room in the 5000 section on the third floor (the top floor). Rooms are very spacious and all had balconies that either overlooked the pool or the “gardens” (in our case the frog pond). The rooms have lots of closet space with plenty of hangers and a chest with six drawers. Ours was in good condition. There was supposed to be a table but ours was missing. Our room had two double beds and they were not in that bad of shape. Lighting as always in the DR was poor. We had a TV but it did not receive the signal very well and after asking a few times were simply gave up and carried on without. (Although other people had TV’s that worked fine—so it is the luck of the draw!!!). The A/C was hit and miss. We were told that they only turn them on at certain hours (after 6) and often it would be too cold with it on. We always had plenty of hot water, and mostly good water pressure. On our last night our bathroom ceiling began leaking but it was fine during our stay.

Food: We ate at the Buffet every meal. We really enjoyed the food and this was much better that we had expected. Always found something to eat. Breads were amazing. The resort rates higher than a 3 star for us in this area.

Overall Impression: This resort is what they claim it to be a 3 star!!! It had its advantages and disadvantages. We enjoyed a relaxing vacation—food was good, there was plenty to drink (should you want it). The little “village” on the street of the resort contained some shops, restaurants, a disco and internet café’s. Edward at the reception was a lot of fun and he has a hard job listening to complaints all day –so give him a smile and he will appreciate it. We met Jackson on the beach from Mel’s Tours and booked a tour through him. He speaks excellent English and was always happy and smiling. Louisa does braids on the beach (she has a hard life) so anything is appreciated. Don't miss Ocean World and the trip into see Cabarete. We would likely not return again as there are many more places to visit, but the resort was in the process of cleaning up its act so we heard, and was good for a cheap relaxing holiday.

Paraiso del Sol - Cabarete  Carol ~ Montreal
January 2008

Arrival - January 5th to January 12th, 2008
We arrived on the 5th of January to a luke warm welcome. I was not impressed by the staff at all. We stayed until the 12th of January and the staff was unwelcoming.

Rooms - We had 3 1/2 days of rain and ont he Tuesday the 8th of January there was very heavy rain all day and we were in the 3300 series of rooms on the top floor and the ceiling started to leak then pour and our beds were soaked. They changed our room along with about 20 other rooms that were full of water. On the 5th I menitonned that the tap was leaking and that the air conditioning did not function on arrival the Saturday and we were now Tuesday and nothing was done. The curtains had holes in them so that the light pierced trough them and there wer bed bugs as my daughter's legs were covered in bites. They changed our room after the leaky ceiling to the 1200 series of rooms and it was on the second floor so no leaking but the air conditioner did not work well .. This hotel does not rate a 3* but more like a 1 1/2* or 2*.

Restaurants - There is only one restaurant Michaelangelo (Italian) and we had our name put on the list fo the Thursday night and got there and our name was no longer on the list. We had to argue to be able to eat there. There was supposed to be a Snack Bar opened every day near the 2nd pool and the beach but it was only open 2 days of the 7 that we were there. Also in their pamphlet they say that tea an coffee were served from 2o'clock to 3 o'clock every day but I never saw any in the 7 days there..The buffet area (Marisposa)was d

Bars - The attendants at the 2 bars that were open could not make decent drinks to save their lives. I have been to ther 3* bars and the drinks were amazing.

Beach and Pools - The beach is full of dried seaweed and old bottles, branches, plastic containers pieces of discarded clothes (sandals) and in the 7 days that we were there no one cleaned the beach. The waves are beautiful though..

Grounds - The grounds need fixing up there are potholes in the walkways and when it rains it is a veritable swamp with tons of musquitoes included at no extra price.

Activities - The animators are lack luster. I don't feel that they really tried to motivate people to do things except go to the local clubs and charge everyone for transport so that they could split up the earnings at the end of the night. **Les animateurs n'était pas trés interessé aux gens.

Tours - The tour to Carabrete was good.

Conclusion - This trip and hotel turned me off of Dominican Republic and this hotel really did me in.I have stayed in 3* hotels that put this one to shame... If you want to enjoy your trip avoid this hotel

Paraiso del Sol - CabareteShiela
May 2007

Our vacation hot spot was the Paraiso del Sol Resort. We arrived on Saturday April 7th, 2007. This being Easter weekend, the hotel allows locals to come and stay. We were put in rooms opposite of each other, but were advised they would be changed the next day. The next day we were moved to adjoining rooms that open up onto a court yard with a pool. It took us 2 minutes to walk to the beach from our room. Before going on our holiday I read a lot of the reviews and was a bit worried. I even brought my own towel. The room was great, and very clean. Refrigerator kept our juice and soda cold, but in the morning you could walk out to the bar by the pool and get yourself a nice fresh juice or just more water. The staff were all very nice and greeted us with a "Hola" each time we walked by our asked for assistance. The bartender's were great, the Dark Rum & Coke hmm good. Banana Mamba's were delicious. Charlie's Restaurant just down the street from the reception served up some awesome food. Back at the hotel, the menu changed a bit each day, the omelets in the morning were great and the pineapple to die for. We met some locals and they took us down to the lagoon, a 20 minute hike down the beach. There we found a bar that served up drinks made in Coconuts. Very tasty, but a bit heavy to carry. They also serve up the catch of the day all at a reasonable price. The Catamaran trip was a lot of fun. But I wouldn't recommend you booking any trips from the beach vendors. Our resort offered activities during the day and then had entertainment nightly around the main pool and bar area, something for everyone to enjoy. Going back next year but this time going for two weeks. Had a blast and would recommend this hotel to everyone. It may have only been rated as a three star, but the staff and the cleanliness of the hotel, rooms, dining, grounds, etc...I would rate it as a 5 star.

Paraiso del Sol - CabareteE M
March 2007

After reading numerous reviews we almost cancelled our March break trip (2007). We decided it could not be as bad as people wrote so we went. We were greeted at the hotel by a 4 member band playing lively music and offered fruit punch drinks right away before even checking in. All the rooms paperwork for the group was lined up on a separate table to get us checked in very quickly. Our room was extremely clean and the A/C worked. The TV only initially had one clear channel but my 10 year old son soon read a little of the instructions ( in Spanish) on how to program the box and we had maybe 40 channels to watch ( not that TV was any priority). There are three pools on the property, all cleaned daily and kept very clean. People did have a bad habit of placing pool towels on chairs and not ever using them. As for towels, I would recommend you bring a couple of your own. They have lots but give you one per person and you have to return them to get new ones. The supper menu had a different theme every night but some parts got a little monotonous.

However, my daughter and son each found something they liked every meal.

The staff are exceptionally friendly and very helpful. They worked long days and did it with a smile. My kids for bouncing around a soccer ball and before you knew it, the staff got together with other guests and a game was had. Each night a cheesy show was put on but it was in good fun. The beach is windy but fun to play in. Where else can you walk for three KM's on a lovely beach and never run into another person. We met a great couple from Scotland staying here and they had a fishing rod and fished in a nearby river. The locals were interested in what they had, even telling where the best spot to fish was. Many, many Germans come to the resort. They did not seem to notice that 10 others were already waiting at the pool bar to get a drink and for lack of a better term, demand immediate service :-( I did see people spraying rooms for bugs a couple of times but never saw any ourselves. We keep food out of the room so as to not attract any unwelcome guests ;-) . Our towels were changed daily and we asked for and were given four every day. May have helped that we left $2 US + a pack of Skittles + Juicy Fruit gum for the maid every day that we bought in Canada. Candy is ridiculously expensive in DR. We felt very safe at all times in DR. We took a "Freddy's Horseback Tour" which lasted the full two hours. Saddles were in rough shape but the estimated 16 KM round trip with most of it on the beach was lots of fun. We brought a full luggage of gently used clothes + another of running shoes. We also bought lots of new pens and pencils to give away. Offered in small parcels to the staff and each time they asked for a note indicating we were giving it to them. All staff members were consistent with this. Shoes were the bigger hit and I think offering them to some of the beach vendors or locals in Cabarette may have made a bigger impact. For a 3 Star hotel we got our monies worth.

It was quiet, clean, safe and very relaxing. The staff were extremely polite and friendly. They always had a big smile. The weather and staff make a huge difference and the staff definitely did their part beautifully.

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE READ THIS AND IGNORE ALL THE HORRIBLE REVIEWS on here!!!! I booked this as a late deal with my boyfriend and another couple and we had the best holiday ever. We read a few of these reviews before we left and was really really worried, but they are all wrong some of them are from a year ago and maybe the hotel has improved Im not sure but everything was perfect. The rooms were big had air con and cable TV, not all our channels worked but who wants to watch tv whist in the carribean HELLO??? I did not see any bugs, rats, cats and i saw only 1 dog on the whole resort. The food was lovely especially Dominican night with lovely rice and beans with fried chicken!! none of us were ill at all whilst there and the food is kept on hotplates and the salad and cold cheese and meats are kept on frozen plates. they are constantly bringing out freshly cooked dishes and even cook you fresh omelettes or pasta or pizza depending on what night it is, I understand about the drinks though they have definetly watered down the alcohol, the only thing that was lovely (and strong) is the cuba libre (dominican rum and coke) or the santo domingo libre (dominican rum and sprite) or the beer. The rooms were cleaned daily and towels replaced. All staff was really friendly as were the locals if you grab a taxi and go into the centre of cabarete which is 5 minutes away and costs 200 pesos (3 pound) It looks a bit scary at first as it can be very busy and lots of people hanging around the street but in the end my boyfriend was laughing at me because they are all so friendly and it is a completely safe place to be. The best bar there is called Bambu bar has great music is cheap and you can dance on the beach, for a quite drink there is also Jose O Sheas of course an irish pub. The pools in the resort are nice, and the animation team are great loads of activities to do all day, I personally prefer the beach which was beautiful, the sea is wavy and you cant really swim in it as such but we had great fun splashing about and jumping in the waves, its is very clean and the beach sellers dont bug you sometimes they just come to say hello (they have to make a living some how) and they are not rude at all. there is also a bar and a pool, with a BBQ in the afternoon which is 1 minute from the beach, its just perfect. Also had a full body massage for 500 pesos (7 pound) and it was really really great and a relaxing way to start the week. We did 1 trip as they can be a bit pricey but YOU MUST go on this its called Monster Truck Safari look it up on the internet, It was the best way to see some of the island and meet the locals, drinks were great food was lovely, we drove through huge rivers and swam in a beautiful river. we went to a lovely little school where the children run out to see you and wave, if you do go on the this take something for the kids, any toys or old clothes you may have as they really need it and they are so gorgeous I wanted to take them all home, you also see where the film jurassic park was made, Please make sure you go on this trip it really made our holiday. also any questions you have when your there ask reception as reps are useless. well Im sure I could go on forever saying how great my holiday was but i HIGHLY RECOMMEND YOU GO AND EXPERIENCE IT FOR YOURSELVES!!!!

January 2007

My husband owns a villa and we come there every year. We were just there in January 2007 for two weeks. We had a wonderful time. It did rain on and off. The staff was wonderful. We usually ate at the restaurant Michael Angelo's which the head waiter was wonderful as well as the staff. The only problem that we encountered is that the alcohol was watered down. (especially the vodka). You need to get more americans there. I think that they would enjoy the area. The rooms were always clean and if you needed anything, the housekeeping would make sure that you got what you needed. Josephina is an excellent housekeeping director. The staff at the desk were always polite and very helpful.

I hope we will be back February 2008. I have read some of the reviews and i believe people are just plain spoiled. Freddie's tours are great. They are not a rip off. I am going to try to recruit americans to take their vacation in the Domincan Republic. I am looking forward to next year.

just to let a few people know ,returned to this resort and spent a week over new year , having been there once before three years ago at same time of year .

this time i was a bit worried because i was bringing my mother + father in law with us but again all was fine , if anything better ,it never ceases to amaze me how some people enjoy it and others hated it , but apart from the mosquitos ( which you cant really do a lot about ) everything was great , monster trucks again was brilliant and i will be back in another three years , i think people dont realise you have to work at enjoying yourselves or you get stuck in a rut

Paraiso del Sol - CabareteJanet & Natalie ~ England
October 2006

I have just returned from a week at the Paraiso Del Sol, Cabarette, Dominican Republic. I travelled with my daughter for a 'chill out' week. We got just that, the hotel is a bus/taxi ride from the centre of Cabarette and there is nothing to do in the area outside the hotel. This hotel is no frills, low budget everything. Bedroom furniture is very old and dusty. Air conditioning hit and miss. Some rooms had to be fumigated during our stay due to large spiders and cockroaches.
Food is very repetitive, what you dont eat at breakfast, you will get at lunch and/or dinner. And you will discover how many different ways there are to serve bananas!

You will need to take tablets for 'the runs' - everyone needed them. Only one bar open at night and sometimes only one bar person, expect to wait 20 mintues at busy times to get served. This hotel could never cope if it was full to capacity. Cocktails/spirits poor quality. No such thing as a large beer and you cannot get drunk - try having a beer elsewhere and discover the difference in strength!

In spite of what some brochures say, the rooms do not have fridges or hair dryers and you will need small flat pin plugs for your hair dryers. The shops near the hotel are rip off merchants, you can buy cheaper in Cabarette, but knock them right down. Avoid the ladies who try to braid your hair in Cabarette, they even offer to escort you to the bank if you say you have no money. Have your wits about you when the shops give you prices in US dollars, you tell them you want to pay pesos and they will try to rip you off with the exchange rate.

October 2006

My wife and 2 friends just came back from the Paradiso del Sol resort/hotel and we had a great time. I made the mistake of booking a vacation and then reading the reviews, but everything worked out just fine. The reviews i read on this resort were horrible, but almost everything commented on was no where to be found at the resort. Rooms were nice, air conditioner worked very well and the staff was great. The food was repetitive, but okay, especially for the price. Everything looked clean and well maintained.

Pools were also nice. The ocean was a little rough, but I loved it. Getting tossed around was a lot of fun actually. We went to Ocean World Adventure Park and swam with Dolphins and it was very worth it.....Over all I had a great vacation at Paraiso del Sol......I am writing this review because i was beginning to think only angry people spoke their minds.................. I'd go back

June 2006

I spent 2 weeks at the Paraiso Del Sol in Cabarete. Being my first time at an all inclusive I thought "wow, everything included". Well that is true except working plumbing and air conditioners. I had to complain 4 times. finally they moved me accross the street to the Camino Del Sol in one of theirr "older rooms". This room was great. The restaurants were only open between certain hours for ech meal so you couldn't go at 2 in the afternoon for a bight to eat because no of them were open. I still enjoyed myself though. swimming in the clean pool and enjoying the pool bar and occatinally the beach. The security personnel were great and were always friendly. Especially when it came to bringing my future fiancee to the room. The telephones were as much a problem as the air conditioners. There is a little place down the street that has phones which were much more reliable and cheaper to use. The best part of my trip was meeting all the french, brits, irish, and eastern europeans. They made my time much fun. Take my advice. Spend the extra 100dollars for the week and go somewhere else.

Paraiso del Sol - CabareteGrahame & John ~ Stoke on Trent, England
May 2006

We have just come back from Paraiso Del Sol in Cabarete after spending the best 2 weeks holiday we have had in ages.

We had already booked the holiday before reading the reviews, we were in such a state of panic we were going to cancel but as we had booked a late deal we could not request a refund. We arrived at the airport and as mentioned in previous reviews 'don't let the men help you with your bags' a man grabbed one of the bags when we were at the front of the bus and threw it onto the bus, this cost us £2 for 5 seconds of carrying. Apart from that everything was smooth. Driving to the hotel it seems that you have arrived in your worse nightmare - taking into consideration the reviews we had read just days before. Once arriving at the hotel the staff were nice and we had checked in in around 3 mins. The room was clean and tidy with 2 double beds and air con, which aided a very good 12 hour sleep. We toured the hotel the next day after a very good breakfast, there were maids and pool cleaners everywhere and the gardens were lovely. Lunch was great and dinner was also good, don't get me wrong we become a bit sick of rice and omelettes after a while so the al la carte restraunt is great for a change. To cut a long story, we had a brilliant holiday and there was nothing to be worried about. If you are asked to buy something on the beach just say no and they will go away. The only thing i would say needs updating are the sun lounge's as they have become saggy after so many people. The people are friendly but watch the bar men at the main pool, they seem to serve selected people unless you really shout them or are female. We met some great people and had a really relaxing holiday, it was just what we needed. Be warned through, Paradise Island can become very busy and there is NO shade what so ever, the white water rafting is an amazing day...even after the 4 hour bus journey....

Paraiso del Sol - Cabarete Kim and Gord ~ Ontario
February 2006

There's a hotel in my hometown that used to be called The Alpine years ago. People in my city went there to buy drugs or get beat up.

When my wife and I arrived at the Paraiso Del Sol that first night, late, the only ones off the bus, for our belated honeymoon, all I could think was, 'We're living in The Alpine Hotel for a week, and it's raining, and we can't leave.'

The bellboy who showed us up to our first room was very helpful. He stood guard by my bags at the top of the second flight of stairs when Kim dropped one of hers and it bumped back down. He was also very helpful in demonstrating how not to lock the patio door, how not to turn on the air conditioner, and the futility of trying to use the phone. I returned the favour by demonstrating how not to tip and gave him a brief English lesson using only slang and hand gestures. He seemed most appreciative.

The staff, to give them credit, speak English quite well if you pay them. At least substantially better than the few English speaking guests we encountered. Those we did meet must have won their vacations in a mental health lottery where ticket sales were restricted to people with substance abuse difficulties or chemical imbalances. Their spending money, sadly, was apparently supplemented by funds otherwise targeted toward theirs medications.

I've always thought The Dominican Republic was a bit behind Canada enconomically until this trip I realised they have had dollar stores for at least 30 years, or before the Paraiso was built, because every lock, light fixture, shower head and patio chair was bought for less money than a plastic necklace from a beach vendor. Maybe that's where they got them. Peso stores.

The towels were nice though. There were two from The Bahia Principe, one from The Casa Marina Reef, and another I couldn't read even when holding it up to the unlockable patio door because it was too transparent. I can imagine the staff rifling other hotel's dumpsters to acquire them. They weren't just worn, they were eroded by the constant stream of water squirting over the shower curtain from the aforementioned shower head.

In retrospect, the inability of the air conditioner to condition was rendered moot by the cool weather. So I'm not complaining. Go when its cold so as not to be disappointed.

We came to fondly call our two beds 'the foothills' and 'the valley'. We'd switch from one to another each night to distribute the pain throughout our bodies.

When we lost our key, (my fault), the problem was quickly solved by staff who suggested, "Leave your patio door unlocked." We never did get another key but were able to bribe the security guard or the maid daily to either let us in or watch our door. No problem.

In the unlikely event that you have some complaint, just use the phone to contact the front desk. Try as I may, I was unable to throw it that far even though our second room was closer than our first. Kim had much more luck with the telephone since she was merely throwing it at me.

To their credit, The Paraiso uses only purified water to dilute their alcohol. A lot of it. Every drink I had was 3/4's rum and it still took a supreme effort to get inebriated. Many other English speaking guests somehow managed to overcome this barrier, but you must remember, they were without their Lithium.

Purified water IS plentiful and available. At the store. Or you can take your own containers to the restaurant at mealtimes and only at mealtimes and fill them from the dispenser which was supposed to be purified. You can't miss it. It's between the Tang orange drink dispenser and the Tang pineapple drink dispenser.

The one a la carte restaurant reminded me of a garage we used to rent in high school for band practice. It has an Italian flag on the wall in case the food requires a hint as to it's origin. The red house wine is a perfect blend of Welch's and rum. The colour is very convincing.

We always took the long route to the beach. Not for exercise but to avoid the septic system leak outside building #5 where we first resided. I tried the short way once by myself but couldn't hold my breath that long.

We went to the buffet once on the Camino side, a lower rated resort, for dinner, and treated ourselves to pizza which wasn't available across the road at the Paraiso. There are two versions. The one that looks like cardboard is plain and the one that looks like cardboard with a small slice of green pepper is deluxe. Their other offerings were less identifiable/appetizing. They don't have signs above their dishes in various languages telling you what they are because I really don't think the staff knows. The only lineup at this buffet was for alcohol. I just stayed there and drank because Kim couldn't throw the pizza that far.

We had one really good day where we left the hotel and went to the Occidental Allegro Playa Grande in Rio San Juan. It was my second and not opted for choice of resorts. Only $70 for the cab and another $120 for the golf and cart and caddy. $200US was cheap to get away. We had to sneak through the hotel with our bracelets in our pockets so we could get to the steps that led down to the incredible beach surrounded by the magnificent golf course on the cliffs above. I was really lucky that we had one hand jammed in our pockets because Kim was only able to hit me with the other as she saw what we had missed. She later confided to her lawyer that the 5 hours I was away golfing made the whole trip worthwhile.

I really thought that all was well when, on the flight home, we were lucky enough to get seats by the exit door giving us a foot of extra legroom. I even thought Kim had forgiven me and wanted to snuggle when she reached over and I realised she had listened intently, as I had not, when the stewardess explained how to activate the thing.

Anyway, it's so nice to be home and sit on my own toilet . . . constantly for the last two weeks. I do everything here now including writing this review. It's just me, home care, and my parasites. Kim doesn't take posession until the end of the month, so there's no hurry.

Admittedly, the trip was not expensive, but once you calculate alimony, the loss of your priciple residence, lawyers and time off work on the throne, there are irreconcilable differences in the price of another resort. Any other resort. They should change their name to LAST.

And Honey, if you're reading this, for the millionth time, I'm sorry. . . . At least you didn't get beat up.

Paraiso del Sol - CabareteBoris ~ Saskatoon, Canada
February 2006

We arrived on Jan. 17. We had our bags taken up to our room and unpacked. I went to turn on the hot water tap in the sink and nothing came out. Both the tub and sink plugs would not hold water. We had to hold the showerhead by hand to prevent water from splashing on the floor, and the air-conditioning wasn’t working properly.

I brought the above problems to the attention of the front desk. He radioed someone right away and I thought great service! Someone came up to the room checked the air-conditioning and said “normal”. I showed him the sink and shower problem, he looked at it then left. It was 10:30 p.m. so I thought someone would be in to repair it in the morning.

The next day no one showed so I went to the front desk and asked if we could change rooms. He asked why, to which I began to explain the disrepair with the plumbing and air-conditioner. He called someone right away and said they would check it. Someone arrived at about.10:00 p.m. that night. He got the hot water faucet to work by turning the valve on from beneath the sink. In order to run the hot water I would have to turn it on and off using the valve beneath the sink. He put his hand on the conditioner vent then left.

I had a shower and as I was stepping out water dripped on me from the ceiling. I hoped it was coming from the shower above and not the toilet. The dripping ceiling would occur daily for a period in the morning and at night. The sink was also dripping from beneath when the hot water was turned on. The next day I requested a room change from the front desk. Once again he asked why and I explained the problems we were having. He immediately called someone. By this time I wasn’t expecting much. In the end nothing was repaired and I stopped complaining about it. We just wanted to get on with our vacation.

There was only one bar open in the evening and it was always a long wait to get a drink. I had a glass of rum straight up and it was badly watered down. In the evening there were two buffet restaurants to eat at. They only served wine at the one restaurant and there was always a line up there. In the morning you could only have toast at the one buffet, the other one didn’t have a toaster.

I cut my finger on some glass one night and went to the front desk for a band-aid. He told me I could buy some at the store. I would have thought they would have a least had a basic first aid kit. A first aid kit would not be a huge expense but would go a long way for customer service.

On a couple occasions I had asked the front desk if they could give me change for 50 pesos. They said no and pointed to the store that was closed. Now some of this may sound petty but the point I’m trying to get across is that the customer service sucked big time. If someone at the front desk would have smiled I’m sure his or her face would have cracked.

The general appearance of the room was ok and room service was fine. The one improvement they could make would be exchanging the towels when they clean the rooms rather then, collecting the towels in the morning and returning the towels in the late afternoon. We would have to hide a towel so we had something to use in the meantime. If you want a face cloth bring your own because they don’t provide them. You may want to bring your own pillows. Their pillows have worn down to little balls of fibre.

The gardens and grounds were well manicured and kept clean. There were far more mosquitoes on this visit then there was on our last visit to the resort in 2002. This was a huge problem for me because some of the bites were getting infected. The mosquitoes were very hard to avoid and they were everywhere!

My general impression was that the staff didn’t seem happy. Now there were some shining stars like Jesus who would always greet us with a big smile, seat us and bring us a drink. This guy should be put in charge of staff training for customer service.

I thought the food was ok but was pretty much the same every day. After two weeks it was getting tiresome. If they had had more variety this would have made a huge difference. They would remove the coffee pot at about 10:30 a.m. until about noon. So you could have a beer or drink but not a coffee. It’s little things like this that they could improve on without a lot of expense. One night they ran out of wine at 8:45 p.m. They should have served wine at both locations. I’m sure this would have eliminated the line-up in the one buffet that was serving wine.

I had spoken with other guests that told me they did not have any of the plumbing problems we did. All guests I spoke with were very unhappy with customer service issues and said they would not return. As I mentioned earlier we did stay at the resort in 2002. My final impression is that the resort is in deep decline and I wouldn’t be surprised if it went into bankruptcy.

In spite of some of the problems with the resort we still had a good time on the island. We hope to return again next year but will not be revisiting Paraiso del Sol. For me the mosquitoes were the final straw.

Paraiso del Sol - CabareteLynsey ~ Northern Ireland
August 2005

We are from Northern Ireland and booked our holiday through teletext and stayed at the Parasio del Sol hotel from 22nd june-6th July 2005 for £700 including insurance, meal on flight and transfers from airport to hotel. When we arrived at the airport we were surprised at the men wanting to carry our bags. Don not let them. They want tips. Our first room in the hotel overlooked what can only be described as a swamp, so we asked to be moved to a room with a pool view, which we were and this was much better. The rooms are nice and comfortable and the cleaners work hard. The air con continually broke down though, which was quite annoying when temps were over 100degrees. The humidity is immense by the way.

With regards to entertainment, there isn’t much. But the pool is big and you can lie there or at the nearby beach. At the beach you will be bugged by men trying to sell necklaces and trips. Just firmly say no and they will go away. The walk along the beach will take 1 hr to cabarete. Here there is a bigger beach and some shops, but again you will constantly be annoyed to go into shops and look.

We went on 2 trips. One to Paradise Island which was really good, although it took 4 hrs (no exaggeration} to get there. The island is gorgeous. You are taken out on a speedboat and then given the opportunity to snorkel. The fish are amazing. You then receive fruit and drinks. After the island, the included lunch is great, but another 4 hrs to get back to the hotel.

The 2nd trip- Ocean World Adventure Park, not to be missed. We bought a general admin ticket for £30 and wished we had have put the extra to it to swim with the dolphins or at least had the sea lion encounter but a great day even if you are just watching.

Both trips booked through Freddy’s tours, much cheaper and exactly the same tour your rep will offer at half the price.

Back to the hotel- most reception staff are friendly and helpful. Food ok, though the same food re-hashed on our 2nd week. Entertainment at night fair. We didn’t venture out of our resort at night, as we thought it may be unsafe.

Basically a good holiday for the price and a bit different than going to Spain. I wouldn’t go back to this resort, but would def like to try the Caribbean again

August 2005

I've just recently returned from the Paraiso Del sol in Cabarete Dominican Republic and after reading some of the reviews of this hotel on your site I thought I'd pass comment on my holiday.

The hotel was very clean and the grounds well maintained. The staff were friendly and helpful. the food was repetitive but tasty. The animation team did a very good job. The pools were clean and refreshing. There were plenty of sun loungers for everyone. The beach was fantastic and the sea was a little rough but invigorating. My room was large with two large beds, the air conditioning stopped working during the second week and when I reported it to the desk I was given another room. The alcohol was very freeflowing. All in all a well priced, good holiday which was enjoyed, not only by me but, by everyone I spoke to whilst I was there.

July 2005

PLEASE DO NOT LET OTHER PEOPLE'S COMMENTS AND VIEWS RUIN YOUR HOLIDAY!! We have recently come back from a 2 week holiday at the Paraiso Del Sol Hotel in Cabarete. To be honest, after reading all these absolutely appauling reviews my heart sank and I wondered what on earth we had booked. I was almost dreading going!! I had visions of us being really ill and being on drips in hospital and was really worried as we were taking our 1 year old daughter. However, having stayed at this hotel I really cannot believe how people can honestly put these dreadful comments about the hotel. This is a 3* hotel and it was one of the BEST 3* hotels I have ever been to. If you are used to a 5* hotel this is not what you will get. It is a 3* hotel. I think people have absolutely ridiculous expectations. What more can you ask for... this hotel has beautiful, regularly maintained gardens with tropical surroundings, the cleanest pools I have ever seen, very very friendly activity team, very clean apartments with maid service every day. You couldn't ask for more food, you have fresh bread that you cut yourself, jams, rolls, cakes, eggs, sausages, freshly made up omlettes, cereals, milk, tea, coffee, hot chocolate, fruit juices, fresh salads, fresh fruit, pizzas, fresh pasta, fish, potatos, vegetables, lasagne, hot and cold meats, rices, soup, cheeses, they only had chips a once a week and no icecream but there is a Danish cafe just 5 mins round the corner which sells lovely iceream for 30P!! There is an A La Carte restaurant and a beach bar which does burgers, hotdogs, chicken, jacket potatoes, salad.... What an earth more do people want?? The cocktails were fine, yes sometimes they did run out of things but there are hundreds of people!! They replace things as soon as they can. The entertainment is good and they make such an effort, they are very hardworking!! The bus into Cabarete is free and yes it is an old dusty bus but people have got to remember this is a poor country, they do not drive round in Mercedes and BMWs! We had a fab time and were not ill, apart from having 'holiday tummy' once but you get that anywhere. Our baby was not ill either and she ate their food too! Please do not believe everything you read. A holiday is what you make it. This hotel is fantastic value for money. We were certainly not disappointed and would recommend it to anyone.

Paraiso del Sol - Cabarete
May 2005

we have just returned from our two week holiday from hell!!!!

after booking a holiday in the Craibean we we excited and looking forward to a nice, relaxing holiday in the sun. How wrong can you be! We arrived at the Praiso Del Sol and were greeted by helpful staff and were taken to our room. The room was nicely furnished and clean, so far so good! The first couple of days were going ok, the food was a little bland and as long as you like eggplant, mashed banana and black bean stew it was fantastic! On the Friday of our first week we were greeted by LOTS of Dominican locals - aparantly they can pay to use the hotel at weekends (which we didn`t know but hey - live & let live). This turned the tables slightly when you can`t use the toilets as they were constantly blocked, you can`t go into the pool as they have taken it over and were drinking in it (depite being told by staff not to). The final straw was seeing chldren urinating in the pool and at the side of my sunbed! They certainly know how to enjoy themselves and spoil it for others! To say they can eat is an understatement!!!!!

The so called curtesy bus (provided by the hotel) is a joke! We (along with 20 others) waited at reception for the bus to turn up at 9:00 am (Dominican time of course - 9:55 am) to be dropped off in Cabarette for a "taste of the local area", this took all of 10 minues to look at the 3 shops and 1 ice-cream parlour!! We were told we would be picked up by the bus at 11:15am (Dominican time again), after waiting in the hot sun for around one hour 3 couples decided to flag down taxi`s. After another hour we (our party of 5 - including a 7 year old child) were the only ones left, because we didn`t take alot of money with us and what we had we spent on souveniers, expensive ice-cream and the local begging children we didn`t have any money left. At 1:15pm we had no alternative to take the "attractive walk along the beach" - so the rep said. So in 34 degree sunshine with no refreshment or shade with a child we took on the arduous 1 hour and 15 minutes slog along a hot sandy beach back to the hotel. Upon returning to the hotel we asked reception "what the hell happened to the bus" and we were told "we decided to cancel it Sir, can I get you anything" - our response was not printable!!!!

To say we would NEVER return to this hotel is putting it mildly. We transferred to a lovely area & hotel in Palaya Dorada after a 3 hour fight with Cat, our Airtours rep. Thankfully this saved our holiday or it would have been a complete disaster, if you would like value for money, relaxation, good food, good wine, good fun and excellent (or at least some) facilities DO NOT GO TO THE PARAISO DEL SOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You have been warned. We have visited the Dominican Republic 5 times and would definatley return, but if this was your first time it would put you off for life!

Paraiso del Sol - CabareteSamantha
March 2005

We booked a last minute allocation on arrival for an all inclusive sun break. We are widely travelled including to third world countries. We always exercise the usual caution with regards to drinking water and the type of food to eat and we have never had any problems until now.

We knew the holiday was snot going to be good when we did not receive a good welcome, no staff seem to want to speak English or help us upon arrival. The room was ok and quite spacious but full of bugs. The maids frequently left the room door open which was an invitation to thieves.

The food was always thesame and leftovers from the meal before were made into another dish for the following day. Hygiene in the restaurant and the whole site was appalling. Birds were pecking at the buffet food. Waiters carried food from one part of the complex to the other and it was uncovered and being pecked by birds on the way. the restaurant was dark and people were allowed to smoke in the small area that was non smoking.

The worst thing was the drinks, the cups were not washed properly between clients they were just swilled in dirty water. Infection was rife on the site. The drinks appeared to be watered down and many people including myself suspected they were using tap water to do this.

Sun beds were hard to find and it was not the ******* knicking them there just were not enough. There was little to do and the animation team were not very energetic. No ice creams to cool you down.

The air condition was turned off on day three of our stay and nobody knew why or when it would come back on. Hot water was also in short supply and when you have violent runs etc you need to keep showering down.

We ate in the Italian restaurant one night and so did 10 other people that we came to know and all of us ended up on a drip and suffered with the runs and vomiting. it was not just that restaurant though because we came to know that a minimum of 40 people were on drips at that time and many had not eaten in the Italian.

My husband spent his birthday linked up to a drip attache to a nail in the wall and the GP told me I had to take it out when it had finished and she would return that night to put a new one up. With a high fever and the runs etc we would take it no more and asked for a flight home urgently. We were then moved to another hotel - much nicer and cleaner but we could not enjoy it because we remained ill ost of the time and infact two weeks later we are still being treated for damaged bowel and stomach linings.

To sum up, if you are not widely travelled and you are like a lager lout and enjoy skegness for a holiday you may like this holiday if not ensure you book a 4 star minimum named hotel and then you will enjoy the Dominican Republic as they have some nice trips on offer. Ocean World Adventure Park is an expensive day out but well worth it and so is the monster truck.

Good Luck

Paraiso del Sol - CabareteManitoba
March 2005

This is the worst resort I've ever stayed at. We knew it was going to be bad when we arrived at the end of February and were "greeted" not by a welcoming staff member but a lineup of angry guests in the lobby trying to find out why there was no air conditioning, hot water and in some cases no electricity in their rooms. It took more than an hour to check in. When we were finally shown to our room, it was a cabin and not the superior room with a balcony and a view for which we had paid a premium. It took more than a day to get the room we had paid extra for, and the staff was far from apologetic. When we complained, they offered us a $3 bottle of rum. The food was weird and gross- one night there was tripe stew! Thank goodness they at least had pizza, which we ate every day for lunch and supper because it was the only thing that looked safe to ingest. We both got sick anyways with exploding diarrhea.

The air conditioning was shut off every morning at 7 a.m. That was about the time we were roused daily by hotel maids who wanted to clean our room - we'd ask them to come back later, but they didn't lock the door behind them. One morning a stranger barged into our room thinking it was his. We asked for a "do not disturb" sign but it was never delivered. The levels of hygiene and safety at this place are abysmal. Bar cups are dipped in cold water then reused. (Resort staff collect the dirty cups from the beach where stray dogs roam and poop, but the cups aren't even washed in hot water, never mind sterilized in a dishwasher). The roof of a beach hut blew off and injured a boy beside us, but hotel staff didn't bother checking the other huts out to make sure the timbers were sound. Sure enough, two other huts lost their roofs in the wind the week we were there. This is less than a three-star hotel. If you go, make sure you have your hepatitis shots. Oh yeah, take a can of mosquito repellant. I live in Winnipeg, the mosquito capital of the world, but this place could sure give us a run for the money.

Sincerely
Once bitten, twice bitten from Manitoba

Paraiso del Sol - CabareteBridlington ~ East Yorkshire
March 2005

we have just returned from the paraiso del sol hotel in cabereta. This is the worst hotel i have ever stayed in. The hygiene is terrible glasses washed in the same COLD water as the ashtrays. We were ill away and still one week later are very ill with diarrhoea and sickness. Please make sure you have your injections and be very careful what you eat.One advise take a candle with you for the dining tables as you CANNOT see what you are eating it is so dark. The choice of food is a laugh terrible. If you have kids they do not have icecream at all, and very little for them to do. Be very careful in the sea it is very dangerous with very strong currents. The rooms were very nice and kept clean. We had no hot water for four days, so get used to freezing showers.I would never ever go back to this hotel, severe changes must be made and a big must in hygiene. We returned home on the 1st of march 2005. Good luck.

Paraiso del Sol - CabareteRénée
February 2005

My husband and I just got back home tonight from Paraiso del Sol . The resort was only a three star at best. This was not a problem for us as we knew that it was a three star in most books. This was our 5th time in the D.R. New Years we were at PUNTA CANA but this was a first for a three star.

Arrival- all was fine for the check in. There was only the two of us.

Rooms- they were clean when we arrived and were ok for the rest of the time. The housekeeping staff did not have a key and kept telling us to leave the door open. We did a couple of times because she was going to do our room next. We mention it to the front desk a couple of time too. Than one day we asked about horseback riding and the manager was talking to this couple who had her glasses from the doctor stolen. She was not very helpful toward this couple and once I talked to them she had told me it was three days ago and still is having trouble filing a report with the police. We informed the manager about our key and she told us it was lost and they replace the lock with a new one but have not got another key yet. Ok that sounds a bit strange to us. They know they need two keys per room and only got one. The lock, my husband inspect it and it was not any where near new. We give her the key and she had it for a few hours. We wake up the next morning and the housekeeping is asking us to leave the door open. We tell her again and they call housekeeping about the key. Friday they finally have the key and we saw her opening our door, but we were inside our room still. We were leaving the next day that is how long it took. 5 days. Now we fine out someone stole our cell phone from the hotel.

Beach-The beach clean ok the water has high waves with strong undertows and current. They knock you down when you are going into the water most times. My husband enjoy playing in it. Bring floating tubes or boogie broads.

Venders on the beach- same as anywhere you go, bring them a banana and a mix drink and they might drop the price a bit.

Food- I did not come to D.R. to eat because the food is crappy. We did not get sick and we had one day where the food was excellent. The other days were ok. They did not have a big selection at all. But still eat three meals a day.

Bars- Very disappointed in them. Everyday they would run out of booze, bananas, juices etc... it was always something. I am not a bigger drinker and I am very picky about what I will drink. A lot of days it was just water all day and night. They did not clean the glasses good.

Water sports- there is none in Cabarete for free. They said it is the book but once you are there they tell you not now. The beach at the resort has boogie broads you can use, he will try to get you to pay at fist like they did to us but my husband would not, he gave in and told him it was included. Every time my husband went to the pool to play volleyball no one was play but, the entertainment area said they were suppose to be playing. He played soccer once and had a great time. Horseback riding- we had a hard time getting our free horseback riding. After speacking to the manager she set it up for us. The guy that took us was a jerk and told us we were not allow anywhere except the closed in ranch. My husband had talk to someone and they said they paid 13 us. My hausband offer him 10 than 13 and he said yes to it. He said one extra hour for 13 each. We had a great time, we were on the beach the most. The couple we went with realize he paid to much and he did not give back any change. The guy that took us out here told us we owed him money because we were gone for two hours AND DEMANED MORE MONEY. I told him no, it was up to the tour guide to watch the time since we were following him. He gave the other couple the money back but all the way back to the resort he was trying to argue with us. I told him, I am not going to fight, that I was on vacation.

Entertainment we enjoyed most of the entertainment, they work very hard. The dancing was great.. activities Every time my husband went to the pool to play volleyball no one was there to play but, the entertainment area said they were suppose to be playing. He played soccer once and had a great time. We took dance lesson and really liked it, they said next day come back, we did no lessons but it said there was on the board.

other stuff this is only a three star there is not all the little extras paper, shampoo, iron.... in your room. They do have blow dryers, if you need them, bring your own because there is not many. massages... we each had one and it was enjoyable, now these guys like it when you bring them a drink. We only paid 15.00 us a person, you can get that price down the street and we would not go lower. Very nice women.

ending we made the best out of we only paid 438.00 before tax so we can not complain that much. I talked to a few people and they said it was different before. There was a lot of stuff the was not in use or service from before. Old signs and info has not been change to the way it is run now. There is no Disco anymore, the drinks signs up on all the walls of the bars they do not make, info about shuttles they give is not available any longer and the world pool doesn't work.

Hey, it is Dominica you have to go with the flow as much as possible and do not like it interfere with your vacation. I know I sound like I am complaining a lot but I think if you know what your going or might get you will not be disappointed.Oh ya ! ask for a room that does not face the back 4000 building. And yes I would go back if it was under 400.00 can.

Paraiso del Sol - CabareteGillian --- UK
September 2004

Dear Debbie,
Myself and my two friends, Vicky and Kirsty (better known to the Animation Team at Paraiso Del Sol as Julian, Bicky and Kristina Aguilera or SCOTLAND) stayed at the Paraiso Del Sol at the beginning of September for 2 weeks. I have to admit that reading the negative reviews of some of the other holidaymakers was quite surprising as we really didnt have any complaints at all about the holiday. To be honest, we were pleasantly surprised at how gorgeous and well kept the Paraiso Del Sol apartments were and the friendliness of all the staff at the complex.

We arrived there not knowing quite what to expect and we were shocked when we stepped out of the airport and were blasted by the heat and humidity (girls, I do recommend masses of Frizz Ease if you go there). That was a minor setback and I was quite worried about how we would actually sleep in heat like that, however, after the porter kindly took our luggage to our room, we were surprised at the effectiveness of the air conditioning. To be honest, there were a couple of nights we woke up freezing but that is certainly not a complaint, especially with the sunburn heat coming off our bodies. We also had cable TV in the room which does come in handy when you maybe overdid the sun slightly (which is quite possible in that heat) and can't quite bring yourself to venture out for a night out of cocktail drinking.

The room was constantly kept immaculate and our maid even made fans with our towels and pyjamas everyday. I was even shocked when I walked into the bathroom and she had gone to the effort of making fans with the toilet rolls and sprinkled rose petals about.

I might agree that the food was a bit monotonous but that could have had a lot to do with the fact that we were not adventurous enough to eat any of the meat dishes. They always had a wide selection on the buffet including about 5 different kinds of pizzas, pasta dishes, hot dogs and hamburgers, cold meats and cheeses and salads, rolls, hot veggie dishes and hot meat dishes and delicious looking puddings. We may not have made the most of the All Inclusive food but we certainly made up for it with the all inclusive drink. The Pina Coladas are so refreshing and the Presidente local beer will be missed also. We perhaps overdid the alcohol slightly on the first week but managed to indulge in a few the second week. We were not limited to stay in the complex every night as the Animation team took us into Sosua on a couple of occassions and we ventured into a club in Cabarete most nights too which was actually quite good.

The entertainment from the Animation team did get a little repetative by the end of the holiday but I've got to hand it to them, they certainly have a lot of energy. They are just constantly on the go and are great with the kids and the Seniors. We did get called 'Lazy' on a couple of occassions but our idea of holiday is, use up energy at night and rest through the day lying at the pool. No hard feelings to them though, I guess they were only trying to do their jobs. Spaghetti was definitely one who wont be forgotten though, he was hilarious.

Well, saying all that, I would definitely recommend the Paraiso del Sol to anyone and I have every intention of returning (perhaps not at HUrricane season next time though).
