Arrival: December 30, 2008 - January 8, 2009
Our arrival was not particularly exciting to report. We failed to take exact directions with us, so the taxi driver had to ask three people in the village how to get to the hotel before we found it. (BTW, taxi was $35 to the hotel and $20 back to the airport). A Dominican woman came to the locked gate and let us in. Martina and Werner (the owners, whom I had conversed with via email to make the reservation) were nowhere to be found. Rudimentary knowledge of Spanish and/or a dictionary are necessary to get by here, because the staff, very friendly though they are, speak little to no English.
Rooms:
We stayed in a 1-bedroom apartment with two beds and a kitchen. It was spacious, clean, and well-constructed. The bathroom had a small shower in the corner with a curtain around it (no tub). The hot (more like warm) water did not last, often resulting in lukewarm showers (not that this was entirely a bad thing). The very low water pressure was a little frustrating. The mattress on the bed had very little padding on top of the springs, which I found uncomfortable - but this did not seem to bother either my son or husband. YMMV. The kitchen had a reasonably-sized fridge, a two-plate hotplate, coffee maker, and basic dishes. There was no air conditioning in the apartment (some rooms have it), but there was a ceiling fan in the bedroom, and we did fine without AC while we were there. The woman who took care of our room was very friendly and did a great job. One of the residents of Bayahibe directly behind our bedroom had a rooster in a cage - which provided a wakeup call every morning. Luckily the outer blinds of our windows closed very well, and we managed to sleep through the earliest crowing on most days. ;)
Restaurants and Bars:
We ate at the following restaurants: Mare Nostrum, Restaurante La Bahia, La Punta, Cafecito de Cubano, Pizzaria Marina, Bamboo Beach Bar & Grill, and Cafe Restaurante Leidy. Most, with the obvious exception of the pizza place, served multiple seafood dishes and a few pasta dishes. The Cafecito de Cubano also had sandwiches. If you are vegetarian, you will be limited mainly to spaghetti with tomato sauce (or pesto at Mare Nostrum), simple cheese & veggie sandwiches, basic salad (if you're lucky), and a few sides. Oh, the Leidy restaurant and Bamboo Grill also have crepes (the latter actually being run by French). My husband's favorite was La Punta, where they served whole fish that were quite tasty; I liked Bamboo Grill and La Bahia. None of them were bad though. We also went several times to a juice bar called La Jungla and once to the ice cream place next door to it. We didn't visit any bars.
Beach/Pools/Grounds:
The main beach in Bayahibe is a moderate walk from the hotel - probably around 10 minutes. We went there once a day on several of the days. To my knowledge (though I could be mistaken), there is no public bathroom near there. Towards the far end of the beach is the start of a resort, but there's plenty of public space available. There are several trees to lie under. Woven beach chairs are available for $6 in USD. The same vendor also sells seafood, fries and drinks. There are a few booths directly behind the beach selling the usual stuff (art, jewelry, hats, etc) but they do not come down to the beach. You will, however, encounter a few pushy vendors on your walk between the hotel and beach, especially during the hours when most of the tourists come through on buses for side trips or boat excursions. The Bayahibe beach itself is fine - no real complaints there. If you enter the water away from the main crowd, there is a small dropoff a few feet into the water - not the best for really small children. If that's the case for you, stick to the main area. We had a nearly-4-year-old with us, and he was fine, with supervision.
Activities on and off the Resort/Hotel:
We went on two tours. The first was the "Safari" trip organized at the hotel. We were able to grab Martina on one of her fleeting visits and ask her to set it up. The truck picked us up early at the hotel. From there, we visited a sugar plantation, a tobacco farm, a market in Higuey, a ranch outside Higuey (where we had lunch and went on a short horse ride), the River Chavon (where we went canoeing) and a mountain farm that grew a variety of things (cacao, cinnamon, etc). It was a fun and interesting day. The second excursion was the Saona Island VIP trip by Casa Daniel. (The company with the hotel - NOT Scuba Fun, BTW - also offered a trip like this, but we decided to try a different company for variety). It stopped for snorkeling in a sandbar with large starfish, drove through the mangroves and past some caves, stopped for lunch and a couple of hours worth of swimming/snorkeling at a nice beach on Saona, briefly stopped at Mano Juan, and then gave us another chance at snorkeling a short distance from the Bayahibe beach (where we saw lots of fish). It really was a great finish to our vacation. There were guides available for both tours translating into English, German & Italian; the first tour also had a Haitian tour guide speaking French.
Other Comments:
One big complaint about the hotel: do not depend on being able to get on the Internet there. When they say "Wifi area", they just mean that some other hotel in the vicinity has Wifi, and there are signals there. However, I was unable to get online with either my netbook or my husband's laptop. The local Internet cafe was closed while we visited, but I think its owners were just on vacation. Werner (one of the hotel owners) tried to explain to me how I could get a card somewhere that would allow me to get online, but I was unclear where or how to get it. Another detail: Martina and Werner are often not on-site. They are building something (and maybe even living?) in Dominicus and are often busy there. If you speak fluent Spanish, you will probably do much better than we did, both finding information from the staff as well as contacting the owners if needed. We felt like we were on our own a lot of the time, moreso than in most hotels. The office closes at 5:00 or so. Oh, they also offer breakfast for 180 pesos each; we had it on one of the mornings we were there. It includes one hard boiled egg, white rolls and toast with butter, coffee, a juice drink, and some cheese/cold cuts. We weren't that excited about it and opted for eggs and cereal (albeit limited) in our room for the rest of the trip. We can't report on breakfast at any of the restaurants, as we were trying not to eat out all day. The restaurants there are not as inexpensive as one might guess or hope. ;)

April 2009
Arrival: November - April
The front desk staff are amazing as are the staff who take all your luggage and my dog to my apartment. I could not have met more friendly people who go above and beyond to make sure you are happy. If you are with RCI and did not bother to notice your reservation, you will see it is a 2 star resort with 5 star hospitality. (Previous posting obviously does not read well!)
Rooms
I rented a one bedroom apartment. For a dominican person this is living like royalty. For a spoiled brat from North America or Europe, of course it is not 5 star Paris!! I lived there for 5 months and never had a problem, it was my little condo on the sea. The TV is in the bedroom which was odd, but they are all like that. The bathroom was nice and big and clean. I chose not to have maid service but for short term stay the maid service is impeccable, they are the nicest people you would ever meet.I had all the conveniences I needed in the apartment, the A/C worked perfect. The view was incredible.
Restaurants and Bars
The restaurant is only open Dec 15 to March 15 or so. They bring Italians from Italy to run the restaurant for the high season. Unlike a previous posting, the chef was Italian. The beach bar menu is available all day (unlike a previous posting) they do not stop at 5 pm. The bar staff at the pool have been there a long time and they are wonderful. They know what they are doing and are the friendliest I have met in years and I have been to many 5 stars (just so previous posting knows)
Beach/Pools/Grounds
Pool was always extremely clean, chairs washes daily, stones around pool washed daily, staff very courteous. Beach is 300 feet away, in front of resort is lava. Website is very specific about this as this coastline is rocky for miles. Path is very safe, no muggings or whatever previous posting said. Went there often. Grounds impeccable, groundskeepers around every day pruning, watering, mowing, raking sand every morning, sweeping and washing walkways and even outside front entrance. They are proud of their jobs and their resort.
Activities on and off the Resort/Hotel
There is a weekly meeting at the large hut with explanations in 6 languages at least of all the tours available, activities at the resort. I went to Catalina 15 times this year, my favourite tour of them all. Great for snorkelling, scuba diving or just relaxing on a private island. You meet so many people from around the world.

March 2009
Let me do you a favor. Don't go to Albatros Resort in Juan Dolio, Dominican Republic. My wife and I have been vacationing in the Caribean every year for the past twenty years. Mostly thru RCI trading our two bedroom condo at Orange Lake Country Club in Kissamee, FL. Over the years we've stayed at many resort's on many Islands at many levels of luxury. From two (2) star to Five (5) star resorts, Usually in the two to three star range because of our vacation request. We like to go for three to four weeks conseculatively. Because of that its very hard to get those consecutive weeks at a five star resort,so we've become accustomed to less than five star resorts. That being said, let me tell you about Albatros.
First , I had been in contact with the resort before we left out of concerns I had after reading conflicting reviews. We needed at least a one bedroom condo because a friend of my wife was joining us for this vacation and I wanted to be assured of some privacy. When we arrived the staff was very friendly, gathered up our bags and took us to a studio. A very small studio at that. After immediatly turning down this unit we were taken to what they called a one bedroom unit. The place was so dirty it was unbearable to think of staying there overnight let alone three weeks. In addition when the average person thinks one bedroom condo, you think of a living area, kitchen area, eating area, with the pull out bed sofa or murfey bed in the living area. Not the case here. The cooking, eating, sitting and sleeping area were all in a 10x12 space. By this time I was about to blow my top when a small Dominican cleaning woman motioned to me to look at the room she had just finnished cleaning. As I went in to look around she said this is PREEMO room. The room was still dirty, but the floor was clean. Its only saving quality was it was a two bedroom unit. Still the same cooking and eating area but at least some privacy for us.There was a young woman who spoke english and was able to communicate the problems we had with the unit. The staff removed all the curtains and washed them, cleaned the windows, repaired the shower, replaced the microwave and mini refrigerator with ones that worked. Luckally the air-conditioner worked, which I learned later is not the case in most units. You can't drink the water so they supply you with a five (5) gallon bottle of water, However, only the first bottle is free. Every bottle after that you get charged. I could go on and on about how bad the unit was so sufice to say it was the worst we've ever stayed at. You can compare it to a dirty flop house with bare light bulbs and dead bug stains on the walls.
Now the resort itself. There is no access to the ocean, after a small beach area there is nothing but volcanic rock between you and the water. You can gain access to the ocean with a five hundred (500) yard walk westward on a rocky path to a beach, but we were told if you choose to walk there only go in large groups because of the assualts and robbery's along the path. The pool area is in such disrepair you cannot walk around it barefoot. The music in the pool area is so loud you cannot carry on a normal conversation let alone relax. In addition Everything played is spanish rap type music. Not conducive to any relaxing time at the pool. The only food store is a twenty-five (25) dollar round trip cab ride to San Pedro. We went to buy some groceries and the taxi driver waits up to an hour for you. There is absoluletly nothing in Juan Dolio except construction everywhere. The so-called mini markets have nothing but booze, beer and some canned goods.
On one of my walks exploring and looking for a store with edible food I came upon a security guard type toteing a pump action riot type shotgun who began talking to me demanding money. I just smiled at the guy and said sorry I don't speak Spanish and kept on walking. I speak Spanish fairly well but I didn't want him to know that, So I just played dumb. On the second day of our stay my wife tripped and fell on the uneven walkway and sprained her ankle. The next ten (10) days she spent in a wheelchair the clinic loaned us.
This so-called resort is owned by an Italian firm and almost seventy five percent (75%) of its clientel are Italians. As a matter of fact most of Juan Dolio's Business are owned by Italians. Given that fact you would think they would have a fantastic restaurant. Again not the case. The cook is a Dominican who has a trick hip, looks like a pirate with a braided goatee and a walnut hanging at the end of the braid, and drinks considerably. Speaking of drinking, I've been known to enjoy a cool gin and tonic from time to time but the so called pool bar only has coke and sprite. In fact there is no ICE at the resort, I mean really, a vacation resort without ICE......... IN fact the pool bar was just a hang out for the employee's. Where have you ever stayed where the management allows that!!!!!!!!!!!
So now you know. After reading this, if you still want to go to Albatros in Juan Dolio, remember I told you so........

there is NO restaurant at the Albatros Resort club in Juan Dolio. there is a place where one used to be. you have to order food from the snack bar before 5 PM, and they never have changed. I think they want you to order more or give them a big tip. the beds were really hard, and the music was really loud at night. and yes there was plumbing problems while we were there last week. we didn't even have a sharp knives if we needed to cut something, plus we were responsible for cleaning the kitchen when we left, which is fine, but we had to go buy some dish soap to do it, for one day. No wash cloths, good think we took some.

March 2007
Our experience at the Albatros Club Resort in the Dominican Republic was horrendous. We were given a one-bedroom unit. When you walk in, you are in a small kitchen with a very uncomfortable day bed - this is your living area. No TV, dark and dreary. There was no coffee maker, very few utensils and dishes.
The toilet in the bathroom did not work and there was a flood of water on the floor in front of the toilet.
The air conditioning did not work -only the fan was working. The loud exhaust for the air conditioner was on the balcony outside the bedroom. There was no balcony furniture; The bedroom was another nightmare.
The bed was hard, with a thin mattress. The 2 pillows hardly had any stuffing in them. There's more, but you get the idea. The desk clerk was not unfriendly, but also not friendly - probably ashamed to give us this place. When we inquired, they told us we could have a better unit the next day, but what does "better" mean. We did not stay there even one night.
We were able to get a room at an Embassy Suites nearby and made other arrangements for the rest of the week further east on the coast. Also the beach there was rocky, not inviting at all. The place looked run down. Parking is on the street outside the Club.
What a disaster. Please avoid this place at all costs. This was an RCI exchange. I've learned my lesson.

July 2006
We stayed in a 2 bedroom suite at the Albatros from July 1st-7th, 2006. Prior to booking, I attempted to look for reviews for this resort but only found one negative review on the rci website. Anyway, quite to my surprise, it was not bad at all. Our suite was more like an apartment. It had a cook top, microwave, mini refrigerator, dishes and cooking utensils. The furniture was adequate and room service really great in terms of housekeeping. The bathroom did have an odor coming from the pipes but it was bearable. The beds were set on a platform as opposed to boxsprings and were queen or full size (not too sure) but they too were bearable. The pool area was quiet and well kept. We did not hang around the resort too much because we were there to visit friends and family. I'm not Dominican so I am speaking from the perspctive of an American who has traveled to a number of different resorts and hotels within the U.S and D.R. Overall, on a scale of 1-10 I would rate this facility a 7. If you have very high expectations and want the Ritz or Trump Tower, then you should go there! If you just want a decent place to stay and you understand that you are in the Domincan Republic, you'll do just fine here

November 2005
During my stay in Nov 2005-
Bottom lines:
-Gay hangout & hook-up spot in town
-discovered a gay porno "Machos Locos" in our VCR upon arrival
-"friendly" travel agent located in hotel lobby(Elvin) is a rip-off- do not trust him, he charges wayyyy to much
[learn to take a taxi which charges much less for the same- we did it with minimal Spanish]
-restaurant in hotel charges different prices for the same order (we had a lemonade & beer)each time
-no iron or ironing board available- what hotel doesn't have these?
-roaches...yes roaches in the hall scurrying along (saw them on several occasions)
Only thing that was good about this hotel was its location...it's in the middle of everything. But there are plenty of what seemed like better and nicer hotels in the same area.
Not a good a idea for families, elderly or disabled (stairs only), and the wise.
I wouldn't go back there...but I'd definitely return to Santo Domingo- it's a beautiful city.

My husband and I just returned from our second trip to the DR. We visited Barahona and stayed outside of town near Playa Quemito in a small hotel called the Casa Blanca. It is operated by a Swiss woman who is a wonderful chef and will prepare whatever you request. The rooms do not have air conditioning but this wasn’t really necessary even in late July. They also don’t have hot water and even though, that is normally a necessity for me, it was fine this time of year. The hotel is not for those who aren’t used to traveling independently, but if you are adventuresome, I can highly recommend it.

April 2006
Hi there,
I just came back from the Dominican Republic and let me tell you i had a blast!!!
My friend and I stayed at the Hotetur Dominican Bay, rated at 3 stars, though i would give it an extra star! We booked with nolitours, and they explained everything to the letter. From the tourist visas to the transfer to the hotel to the activities. Just as described! we were there 7 days, though it did rain one full day but it was refreshing, and it didn't stop anyone from jumping into the pool. i have to say the rooms were rather surprising! from the reviews i read i was expecting worse! they were surprisingly adequate. the food 3 meals a day plus snacks, were tasty and satisfying, its obviously not Le Ritz but it certainly beats airplane food!
the staff were friendly, funny, and very knowledgeable some spoke up to 5 different languages!! the beach it self was great!! except for those pesky vendors! but they got to make a living too right!! id have to say the club (the meeting point) was actually a lot of fun!! we make lots of friends and had a super time!!! from the reviews i was expecting a lot worse, but in my opinion they have made a whole lot of improvements through out and i think its earned an extra star in my books! id give it a 4 out of 5!! i would go there again! and the walk to the beach its not that bad!! its a nice stroll!!and the view from the bridge is great!!

April 2006
Four of us ( two mid forties couples) just returned from a one week stay (April 10th to April 17th/06) at Hotetur Dominican Bay Resort and here is my review:
Reception upon arrival: Under staffed and disorganized. No one at the reception area was fluent in English.
Rooms: We were assigned to building #15. The phone did not work, the toilets leaked, and the balcony door did not lock.
All of these problems were straightened out within 24 hours and only after repeated trips to the front desk. Also, the 1500 block of rooms has a resident rooster which sounds his alarm every 10 minutes from 3:am to 7:am.
We switched our rooms on day three.
Food: This is a 3 star resort with 3 star food.
Beach: Hey, I don't mind a walk, but if you want to sit outside of the hotels enclosed area, be prepared to spend up to $5.00 to rent a chair.
Additional costs: On the second night we were there, I was sitting in a resin chair by the pool, when one of the legs on the chair broke. A security guard escorted me to the front desk and I was asked for my room # so that they could bill my room for the chair. The four of us were astounded!!! Finally the manager told me that I would not be held liable for the chair. I then went to my Nolitour Vacation Rep, (Victor) for assurance that I would not be charged, and when he looked up my room #, he told us that based on what we paid for our trip, that we had ro right to complain. At that point I should have also mentioned that we had been hounded by one of the resident prostitutes that stay there, but I think I already know what his answer would have been to that.
Anyway, we booked this trip last minute. We paid $297.00 pp plus tax, and got our monies worth of food, booze and sun.
Would we go back??...I can't see this resort in our future vacation plans.

February 2006
Just came back from the Dominican Bay Resort and were not impressed at all.
Its rated a 3 star but I don't know if I would even give it that. It was nothing like the pictures on the internet.
Have done a lot of travelling, 90% of it last minute and this was a disappointed place.
TRAVELLING TO AND FROM:
Landed at Punta Cana Airport ... WOW, a long bus ride, 3-1/2 hours there,
4-1/2 hours back AND NO BATHROOM ON BUS. Was told by travel agent only a
1-/2 hour ride (even that would be too much for this resort, 5 minutes would be too much).
FOOD/BARS
Bland but okay, no one got sick anyway. It always seemed like you were moving from bar to bar as one would close the next one would open, didn't find this real convenient for a vacation.
BEACH:
Very beautiful but quite the hike (were told my our travel agent resort was on the beach), its actually across a bridge across 2 streets, at least 5 minutes. Bothered constantly by vendors and locals selling souvenirs or themselves. The water was beautiful and the sand nice & white but some garbage around and hard to enjoy when you are always being bothered.
If you do go here, you have to take the walk about 5-10 minutes down the beach to Cesar's Pizza, BEST 4 CHEESE PIZZA I've ever had. For $10 you get a huge 8 slice with box and its amazing.
ROOMS:
Very poor condition, no fridge, no blow dryer, very little lighting. Some of the shutters do not close all the way which lets in a lot of noise. One of the beds was slanted, the pillows were not comfortable, some were hard,
some soft, some falling apart and lumpy. Even the shower curtain was
smelly. Toilets had to be flushed about 3 times before they would work properly. But at least we had hot water well if you waited till after 10am and even later on the last day.
ALL INCLUSIVE:
This it was not, had to pay for all water sports, pool table, foosball table even to play bingo with the entertainment staff (another joke) at night you had to pay.
LEAVING:
Our rep told us they have a locked room for luggage and a courtesy room to shower in before you leave (check out was 1pm but bus left at 4:30pm). No locked room (just the so called lobby) and the courtesy room, for 2 people you had 1/2 hour to get showered and ready ? ?
STAFF:
Bar and restaurant staff very friendly, entertainment staff kind of pushy and not very entertaining, staff at desk did not know a lot of English, vendors were better versed. I would think especially the front desk staff should know English, maybe not so much the others.
Cleaning staff did a great job with what they had to work with, always clean towels and clean sheets but still the same lumpy pillows.
All in all we made the best of this vacation but 2 of the 4 would probably not go back to the Dominican because of this resort and I know to keep with at least a 4 star when I travel.
I would NOT recommend this place to anyone.

"Would rate this Resort (econo)"
Just came back from Dominican Bay Resort Jan 23rd-31st 2006. Had a great time, didn't know what to expect so we were pleasantly surprised. Anyone looking to get away for a sunny vacation on a budget, this is the place to go.
The grounds were very well maintained, very clean, the staff were friendly. Some spoke 7 languages and some only spoke Spanish. For the most part we didn't have any problems communicating. The reception is small for the number of rooms so the wait is long for whatever you need.
The rooms looked exactly like the picture. There's cable TV but no remotes for the television, there are no fridges, no blow dryers. The rooms are basic but I found them to be clean and adequate. We tipped $2.US everyday on the pillow and we had plenty of clean towels, fresh flowers detailing the bathroom and towels made into the shape of Swans on the bed. You can rent the safe for $20 US and $10 you get back at the end when you check out. We bought ourselves 2 beach towels for the same price as the deposit on the towels. It seemed complicated to get Beach Towels there so we just bought our own. We didn't have any bugs in our room.
The food at the Buffet was adequate, basic stuff and variations of the same food everyday but we never got sick. I liked it because it was completely closed in, there were hardly any flies, it was clean and the table clothes and napkins were linen. 2 of the bars served food too. The poolside Bars & Grill served Hamburgers and Hotdogs all afternoon and the one at the beach just at lunch time. I liked the fact that at the bars you could serve yourself for water & soft drinks. There were always a stack of plastic cups to help yourself. That way you're never waiting in line unless you want an alcohol drink.
The Beach is not private, it's about a 300 meter walk to the beach crossing 2 roads. There's a wooden enclosure you walk through to get to it. There was plenty of security everywhere. At the Beach, the Resort has an area enclosed where the vendors are not allowed to come in but they wait outside of there for you to go out. For the most part they hassled us for a day or 2 and then they left us alone (they just need to make a living)
Boca Chica Beach has the clearest, cleanest water I have ever seen, the water was warm and there were no waves because the Coral Reef blocks the tide from coming in and out. It's White sands, beautiful snorkeling, you didn't even need snorkel gear, just look down and see the tropical fish to the naked eye.
The town of Boca Chica is a 5 minute walk, I found it completely safe by day but wouldn't go without a group or local people at night. You can buy all your souvenirs there, tones of gift shops and vendors, get ready to barter though!!!
I have taken lots of pictures but I won't post them on here, anyone who wants more information or has questions about this resort, feel free to email me and I'll email you back. Please put "Dominican Bay" in the subject line. sunshine4jo@rogers.com

January 2004
We just returned from a week at the Dominican Bay Resort in Boca Chica. I have not much good to say and this is not long enough to list the negatives. Listed at 3.5*, really a 2.5*.
Food
Very bland and no variety in buffet. 2 BBQ's but only had hotdogs and hamburgers. Italian restaurant okay, Chinese restaurant horrible. We left the Chinese restaurant before we finished our meal.
Bars
One bar closes, another opens so you are forever moving from bar to bar. No variety in the drinks, I couldn't even get a strawberry daiquiri. Combined, you can find a bar from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 a.m.
Service
Very good. The staff were friendly and tried to be helpful.
Maid came at no specific time of day. One day morn, one day late afternoon.
Activities at 10 and at 3, not very organized.
Rooms
Not very clean. Very old furniture. The ceiling above the shower just about fell on my husband's head as he was showering, the shower above us was leaking. The maintenance man came within a couple of hours to supposedly fix the problem. By the morning the ceiling was dripping into our tub again. We heard some additional horror stories about some of the other rooms at this resort from other people; cockroaches, no air conditioning, no hot water, etc.
There are two blocks - 18 & 19 - that are new and those people had no complaints.
Beach
Five minute walk to beach. Lovely white sand. Lots of loungers. Blue turquoise waters. You could swim out to the coral reef and do some good snorkelling.
Town of Boca Chica
Dirty. Night life everywhere but you need to be cautious in town.
Currently the Dominican Peso is not worth much. We received 50 pesos to 1 - US dollar, and 30 pesos to 1 - Canadian dollar. However, the price of the gifts in the stores were raised and the shop owners were not willing to barter a lot.
All in all, the weather and the beach were lovely. Would I return to this resort? No, there are other resorts in the area that much nicer.

November 2003
My wife and 8 friends booked last minute to stay at the Dominican Bay Hotel in Boca Chica, and were pleasantly surprised. This group books last minute every year and we have 3 priorities, all inclusive , on the beach, reasonable accommodations. We consider the fun and the rest up to us, the Dominican is the Dominican remember. It started out initially very poor as our rooms weren't confirmed and unavailable until 2:30 AM. (we arrived at 11:30PM ) Once the Sun arose the next morning so did our spirits. The rooms were clean and air conditioning worked well, water was hot with good pressure, we of course do not drink it, a handy jug of processed water is recommended. All buffet meals were very good, better than ones previously had in the Dominican. The restaurant meals were not better only a change of venue. There's 2 pools with bars, the beach is a fair hike but very nice and it's bar remained open as long as you were there even th! ough their web site says open till midnight only. We kept them open most nights to 4:00 AM. We had a blast. The entertainment is mediocre at best but this is a 3 star resort and more than adequate. There's plenty of shopping close buy, no Casino, but they do bus you to the nearby Hilton if your so inclined. Staff was good and again because we were a group of ten who looks after ourselves no problems occurred and everything was fine. One thing to consider is the distance from the airport, the bus ride is approx. 1 1/2 hrs. Convince the driver to stop for drinks and all is OK. We would recommend this resort for those that are happy with a little less accommodation and but a good price / value. Also the trip to Suona Island is recommended, our second.

March 2009
Arrival: March 10 - 17
Arrived approximately 5:00 a.m. Tuesday morning with husband and our children aged 7 and 11. Received room approx. 1:00 p.m. that day. Airport was fine, bus pick-up fine, took 20 minutes from Santo Domingo airport to hotel. Slept in lobby until 7:00 a.m. when breakfast started. Everyone friendly.
Rooms
Beautiful room. Good size, clean and comfortable although we did not travel to hang out in our room. Nice balcony overlooking the beautiful gardens.
Restaurants and Bars
Great food. Pizza/hamburgers/hotdogs/chicken wings/french fries. (The kids were in heaven). Buffet was huge for all 3 meals. No one could possibly go hungry. There was EVERYTHING.
Beach/Pools/Grounds
Beach was fabulous. It is a public beach and there are vendors. Get to know them, they are great people trying to raise their families like anyone else. My kids were in the pool all the time. Very clean. The grounds were beautiful. The trees are marked to tell you whether almond/mangoe/banana/coconut/etc. It is very well kept with beautiful flowers and lots of birds. They are always cleaning up. They sweep and then scrub down the walking paths with soap and water every morning. Unbelievable.
Activities on and off the Resort/Hotel
We only did 2 tours (the resort and town kept us busy enough). One half day to Santo Domingo to visit some of the Christopher Columbus sites (must see) and a whole day excursion to Saona Island via speed boat and a nice slow return by catamaran. This was a 12 hour excursion but well worth it.
Other Comments
Bring snorkel and mask. There is a lot to see. Plan your tours for Saturday and especially Sunday. These are the days that Santo Domingo comes to the beach of beautiful Boca Chica. There are a lot of people. Relax when it comes to the vendors...they really are good people. Enjoy!!!!

February 2009
Arrival: January 19 - 26
Nothing unusual to report. It was smooth through customs and our bus was ready and off to the resort.
Rooms:
We stayed in a large room, but apparently according to others they are all the same size, unless you're fortunate enough to have a suite. The bed was a queen and very comfortable. Although, this hotel is a little dated, we found it be clean and well maintained for the whole visit. We had a little kitchen area, with a sink, unfortunately the small fridge was missing. A small balcony with a beautiful view and a T.V. that actually worked with many stations.
Restaurants and Bars:
The buffet was fair to good. The trick I think is to get to it as soon as it opens, this way the the food was always hot. The buffet is typical is most resorts, pasta, various sauces, lots of bread and always some choice in meat. The breakfasts were very good, lots of fresh fruits, yogurt and of course the omelette bar where you choose your favs! There is only one a-la-carte which we went to twice. It was never busy and the food was very good. It was really just a treat being served. Both of the pools have snacks as well, the larger pool serves Pizza which my hubby always enjoyed. The smaller pool snack bar served very good hamburgers, hot dogs, fries, chicken, some type of ham on fresh buns with all the dressings. Bars-typical of the D.R....lots and lots of Rum! My husband was a little disappointed in the Beer, he likes Presidente and they served Brahma.
Beach/Pools/Grounds:
The main beach is Public which seemed to bother a lot of people. My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed this aspect of the resort. Yes, there are many Dominicans present trying to sell you items - you simply say no thank you. I felt the experience of being able to mingle with the people of this beautiful area very inspiring. They truly are very special and we are very fortunate in Canada. The beach itself is absolutely stunning, white sand and you can walk forever. The water here is very calm, so if you enjoy just floating around, this is a great destination. There are two pools, the water was perfect temperature and the pools were well maintained.
Activities on and off the Resort/Hotel:
There is a free shuttle from this hotel that leaves every morning except Sunday. It brings you into Santo Domingo where you can walk around at your own leisure. If time is an issue as far as returning on the free bus - you can take the local bus (very safe) or taxi (both reasonably priced)
Other Comments:
Our check in and check out were very efficient. We took this as a last minute deal with Go Travel Direct and would return without any reservation. I've actually sent a thank you to the manager and staff, our experience was a great one and they should be proud of their facilities. We will return again next year.

March 2008
Arrival and Flight
March 14, 2008, Sunwing 400. Our flight to La Romana was excellent. Sunwing staff were very attentive. I had an omelette on the way down with my glass of champagne. Sunwing, as usual, provides free earphones for the movie, but remember to hang onto them because they will charge you if you need a pair on the return flight. Attendants came by many times throughout our flight for pop, water, drinks etc.
The return was much different unfortunately. The cabin was extremely warm, and we had kicking screaming kids directly behind us. The meals were either chicken or tortellini. We were offered wine with it and when my husband requested pop instead, he was told they didn't have it at that time. And no one ever came back with it. We received a drink of water just as the descent to Toronto started.
Rooms
Our room was adequate. It was very nice and clean but location was poor. It was our 6th or 7th time there so I did leave a comment with hotel mentioning that maybe with the use of computers they could offer return guests a slightly better room. In my review from last year's trip, we had received an upgraded room which was beautiful. We don't spend a lot of time in the room so this was a very small problem for us. We could have requested a room change but didn't bother.
Restaurants
We didn't enjoy the a la carte restaurant last trip so didn't bother with it this time either. The buffet always had something good - we definitely didn't starve and actually gained about 4 lbs. Both of the pool bars had snacks as well. The one near large pool had pizza and the other near the conference centre had burgers, hot dogs and fries - all very good
Bars
Bars, three in total, (there are 4 but one of them I have 'never' seen open), were all good, well staffed and friendly. They have changed their beer from Presidente to Brahma. Unsure of reasoning for this.
Beach and Pools
Pools, especially the large one, was maintained fairly constantly. And the beach was as white as ever. Saw no evidence of the oil spill from two weeks before our trip. The beach on Thursday was quite crowded, due to Semana Santa but fun too. They had a huge inflatable Presidente bottle out by the reef, that took almost all day to inflate. They also had an inflatable 'castle' of some kind at the end of the beach, which had bars inside. Again, this was all for Semana Santa.
Grounds
The grounds at the Don Juan were, and always have been, extremely well maintained.
Activities and Entertainment
We weren't as impressed this year as we have been in the past, with the nightly entertainment.
Tours
We did one tour, (a first for us), which was the Outback Safari. Very good but VERY dusty/dirty. We actually got back to hotel and got in the shower with our clothes on. The waterfalls we went to were beautiful.
Departure and Check Out
Very efficient and speedy.
Conclusion
We love Boca Chica and have for years, however, we are now thinking of a possible change in scenery for next year. This has nothing to do with our trip experience, just the fact that we have gone so many times. We have always been big Boca Chica boosters, and we go into town everyday at least once, for our cappuccino if nothing else and have never had a problem. Hint** Take candy for the shoe shine boys. We usually go into town once or twice at night for a change from the hotel. We have never, ever felt threatened or the slightest bit nervous in doing so.
There is a new cigar place on Duarte, across from the banco populaire. And what looks like a couple new restaurants. I saw a NY pizza place called Joey's (on Duarte also) but we didn't try the pizza, so cannot comment. Our cappuccino bar, (on Duarte, about halfway to Hamaca) is still there with the same staff, so we had our daily fix.

February 2008
After reading the review posted in December 2007, I figured I would write my long overdue review.
I am Canadian, from Mississauga and husband is an American. We have both traveled extensively in our previous lives and together have gone to the Dominican five times. Our first trip was to Punta Cana, which we did not like. In 2004, we stayed at the Don Juan and love the resort and the village itself. I have never not felt safe there. In 2005, we stayed the Dominican Bay, and although we had a good time, found the hotel not comparable to the Don Juan.
In 2006 and 2007, we again stayed at the Don Juan. We walked through the village at all hours, day & night. There is an awesome cappuccino cafe right in the middle of town where we would stop every morning. The 2005 trip was with my two daughters and again, never once felt unsafe, even at night.
Last year in 2007, we even got an upgraded room without requesting or paying extra for it. It was fantastic and if treated properly, the service you receive from the housekeeping staff, restaurant staff etc is wonderful too.
We have never had a bad stay at the Don Juan. One year we had an ant problem in the room but a trip to the supermarket in town resolved that quick enough.
We must be weird because we even love the 'land sharks' (beach vendors). We buy cigars on the beach. And normally about mid-afternoon, I would purchase a plate of fruit from vendors as well.
There is a pharmacy on Duarte to the left of the resort, where you can purchase stuff you may have forgotten from home. They don't speak much English, but with our bits & pieces of Spanish we got by. This year I have been taking Spanish lessons and will be putting them to good use, as we leave for the Don Juan again on March 14/08. I won't wait so long to post after next trip. Hasta Luego!

December 2007
I stayed here from november 2-9 2007. I will start buy saying that there was about 40 other guests at the resort. I like to talk with many people when I am on a holiday and this was not very easy do to the lack of guests. Many of the guests were from germany, france, austria, a few from America and many from the dominican republic. Most guests could not speak english or spanish witch made it very difficult to make friends.
The resort is in the town of boca chica and is not to safe. I did not feel to safe at the don juan. I have stayed at the hamaca witch is 10 minute walk east and find it much safer. The hamaca has a casino so there is much better security. I left early in the morning of the 9th and when I checked out the guard that is soposed to be watching out for guests was sleeping on a couch in the lobby. Not to safe ehh. The disco is full of hookers at night and when you go to leave there are hookers walking around the resort trying to sell them selfs. The don juan is the only 3 star resort I have stayed at and I can see the difference from 3 star to 4 star here. My advice is if you do plan to go here and want to have a good time, don't go in early november. The place was so empty that I was very bored. The only good thing was I never had to wait for a beer or in line for meals. I am not happy with what I spent to stay here.
Would I return. Mabey if I could go in the busy season and got the package cheaper.

January 2007
We spent a wonderful week at the Don Juan!
We are an easy going couple who rolls with the punches. High on our list of priorities is good food and for this, the Don Juan rates 4 stars! There was always a wide variety of delicious meats/ vegetables/ salads and sweets. Authentic Dominican dishes were offered at every meal and we discovered some that we loved. Hats off to the chef and kitchen staff! Burgers on the beach were excellent, but may not be to your liking if you were raised on “MacDonald’s” fare. Thick meat patties that you dressed yourself. The afternoon pizzas, served by the pool, were ok and popular.
The house wine was acceptable for the first few days, but seemed to change to something unpalatable near the end of our week. Beer was always good. Hard liquor, probably is watered down as I suspect is at most of these all-inclusives. One rarely sees a guest who is unbearably intoxicated, which ultimately is a good thing.
The waiting staff in the El Corral (buffet) restaurant was mediocre to good - good if you were in their line of vision. They need some coaching on scanning the crowd (ex-waitress here). However, it was no big deal, for the food is buffet style and the bar is totally accessible to patrons. On many nights a fantastic trio serenaded the tables; one of the guitarists was EXTRAORDINARY! And I mean EXTRAORDINARY!
The guests at the Don Juan were from all over the globe. We heard Italian, French, German, English, Russian and more. It made for quite an interesting volleyball game on the beach. Some of the staff spoke several languages and some spoke only Spanish. We found the staff warm and friendly, as all Dominicans are, when treated in kind.
I enjoyed the nightly entertainment on stage, the two nights we took it in. There are no pretenses to Vegas type shows (as you find at other resorts) but there was a lot of enthusiasm, genuine enjoyment and budding talent.
The hot water was tepid for the first two days and the maid service was erratic. Our room was gorgeous - a living room with separate bedroom (very comfy bed).
The beach was fantastic! It is enjoyed by both Dominicans and tourists as it is public. You may find the beach peddlars annoying, but they are licensed and this is their livelihood. "No gracias" three times is effective. However, against our tour rep's cautions, I eventually got into bargaining and got quite good at it. (Come up a bit from your lowest bid so that they can save face.) Only once did we discover that we paid more than what could be had in town...and it wasn't so much that we felt ripped off. Everyone has a story to tell and is interested in yours, including the peddlars.
We did two tours through our travel agent "Go Travel Direct". Not for the faint of heart, the "Gran Safari" takes you over rough, dusty roads into the interior, where you see and experience Dominican life and landscape. I hope you get our guide, Ishmael, who was a storehouse of knowledge and lots of fun! I highly recommend this tour. However, the tour to Santo Domingo was disappointing. We were taken to some extraordinary places, but our guide had little to say in the midst of a city rich in architecture and history. We expected and yearned for more.
If you are looking for a tourist compound isolated from the culture, if you want to be catered to exclusively in your own language, if you want a beach posted "whites only", the Don Juan is not for you. However, we would go back in a heartbeat!

May 2006
Just returned from the Don Juan, on April 28th,2006. It was my first time to the DR and I travelled with my two daughters aged 14 and 8. From the moment we landed at La Romana airport, we felt welcome and safe. The 90 minute bus ride to the resort was an eye opener. To see the way these people live in their impoverished country was an education to myself and my children. We found the resort to be clean, and comfortable. We were given a room in the older section, which had no view but was acceptabe, except for the extremley loud air conditioning. I couldn't sleep with the racket it was making and finally had my room changed. It was a newer room and much nicer with quiet air conditioning. The food was excellent and we ate at the a la carte restaurant twice. The animation staff was a big hit with my children and we all enjoyed the dancing and the shows at nite. The beach is gorgeous. There are a lot of vendors on the beach but we enjoyed them. I think it would be boring to sit there all day and have no vendors, unless you are a complete sun worshipper( unlike us) None of us wanted to come home when the time came and I would definitely return to this resort in the future

April 2006
We have never wrote into Debbie's before, because everything we had experienced at the resorts we have visited, had already been reviewed extensively by other travellers.
Debbie's reviews are so important to our travel plans that only what vacation dates we can arrange comes next. To our surprise there was very little information on the
Duan Juan Resort. We have used Debbie's reviews previously, to our advantage ,so now I feel obligated to sharpen my two index fingers and submit my wife's and my
review. This is my first review so please take this in account with my awful grammar and rambling on.
First off we are 3.5 star, budget minded travellers. We have been to Cuba Quatra Palmas Varedaredo Santa Lucia Club Caracol Dominica Republic Playo naco
Luperon and Duan Juan. Go Travel, because of there great prices, has afforded us the opportunity to travel once a year. If there are ten reviews on a given resort and
five are for the resort and five are against, I know we will be part of the 50% that found the resort up to their standards.
The airport at La Romana to say the least is an unexpected surprise. This is a private airport ,so there is no unwanted people trying to get you to hire them to carry
your luggage 50 feet to your bus. The bus trip is about an 1.5 hours but goes fairly fast with your Rep giving you all the details about your stay. You have to enter
the town of Boca Chica to get to the Duan Juan Resort. This is an eye opener.
ON the bus they had given us our room numbers. At the receptionist desk everything went smoothly. Our room was not acceptable, complained, and we were given
a nice room overlooking the pool and the beach with a balcony.
There was always somebody cleaning, whether it was the grounds or the leaves that fall from the trees into the pool. Our maid always kept our room perfect. We gave
her money and various items my wife brought down to give away. This is my own personal opinion but I found the bartenders much more appreciative of tips than the
bartenders in Varedaro. The beer was Presintinte? not bad. The rum, they don't know when to stop unless you tell them. The other drinks, well , they all start to taste
the same after a while. The food starts at 7am and goes until 1or2 am. There is only one a la carte, good. Now if there is a a 3.5 resort with better food than Don Juan I
haven't been there and I hope somebody writes in and says where it is at.
They have two pools. One medium and one small. Cleran. We really miss the fact there is no swim up bar. We always find this a great place to meet people
and brake the ice. I have not been to Punta Cana but people that where there told me that they liked this beach as much as Punta Cana.
NOW THE BAD STUFF
You are on a public beach. There is hotel security on the beach. The locals are mostly to the far right or left of the resort's beach area. They pass along the resort
beach area to get where they are going. I heard people complain but I Don't find it a problem. Although I find It more itimitating to walk this stretch of beach
than I would at Varadero. There is a breakwater. which makes this ocean part, like a huge swimming pool. You can walk out forever and never go past your waist.
The Vendors, the RAVENDOUS Vendors. This has to be the number one complaint that I heard from vacationers, especially those ones that have only been to Cuba.
I hav3e been to Puerta Plata and the vendors there seem to be milder. Having said that it is still the same game. The vendors are only allowed on the beach not the resort
If you don't want to be bothered don't buy from the beach until the last day. The price will be the same on the first as the last,in fact you will probably be wiser to the prices on the last day. If you are like me you will go from no gracias ,to no ,to a simple shake of the head. NEVER say later or maybe or I don't have any money on me
right now. If you are as aggresive in your no's as they are in trying to sell, after a day it will diminish. If you decide to take a casual look, you've been warned. If for any reason you feel threated, just the mention that you are going to call security will send them scurring away. If you take it all in stride it is really not that big a problem.
If you take a right turn off the resort you will go into a street of small shops and grocery stores. At first we would only go with another a couple but after we got over the fear we made two or three more trips by ourselves, though I don't think I would try it at night. We actually got our best deals on the rum and vanilla at the grocery store.
Took a bus tour into Santo Domingo. I thought it was well worth the money . It included a lunch at a really nice restaurant. Heard a lot of complaints about the other tours. The entertainment at best is once you have seen it ,that's enough. There is a disco ,but we really didn't go,and I never heard any good comments.
Overall
If the price is a good deal, and you have adventurous nature with an open mind and don't expect 5 star at 3.5 resort. Why Not! We always try to go somewhere different
but if this was the best deal we would come back.

April 2006
My husband and I just returned from this resort on April 15. I have traveled the Caribbean extensively and must say that Boca Chica Beach is the BEST beach I have run into. The water is very clear, sandy bottom (no need for beach shoes), and very shallow because of the reef. The resort keeps their stretch of the beach very clean. It is a public beach however, and the Dominicans enjoy it as much as the tourists. The resort itself is nice enough for a 3.5 star. We had a room in the older section (Building 6). We had a view of the side gardens. The room was exceptionally clean and very spacious. Everything worked and when had a problem (toilet tank leaked) it was fixed in a matter of hours (this is amazing compared to other places I have traveled--where if things got fixed it took days if ever!!!!!). Rooms in the newer section are nicer and the Captains Club rooms are over the buffet and all have an ocean view---would recommend this option if you want to guarantee a good view!!! Some of the staff spoke excellent english while others tried--we found we could always communicate our needs and be understood.
The grounds are well kept. Beautiful flowers and the staff worked hard to keep the pathways clean. Food was adequate--not much selection---but we never went hungry---steer clear of hamburgers. Service in the restaraunt is none existent. (serve yourself--there is a bar at the back). House wine is swill, but other drinks always available. The security around the hotel was very good--always making sure the guests were okay. There are two pools--one big and one small. There are not many chairs at the pool but if you asked at the beach they would bring some up for you if you prefer the pool. Not many stayed around the pools as the beach is so nice.
It was nice being able to walk into town--I recommend you buy your souvenirs in town or on the beach. Coffee, vanilla and liquor is best bought in any of the two grocery stores we saw. We did not do the town at night but other people did and although there were prostitutes everyone said they were safe. We would have liked that the hotel provide a shuttle to the Casino at the Hamaca, as they don't we did not go there, but did walk through the hotel during the day.
We would recommend this resort to other travelers but not those who are expecting the Hilton!!!! We would love to return again especially for the beach. The vendors did not bother us in fact we like to look at what they have and talk to the natives. This resort is what they say it is 3.5 no better and no worse.

April 2006
If you looking for a cheap, relaxating, no frills vacation this resort if OK for that. I was part of a group of 20 who was at the Don Juan from Mar 30-April 6th. Weather was great and the beach was beautiful.
Rooms: clean and big;
Food: not a big selection but good tasting, only 1 speciality restaurant but it was excellent;
Beach: beautiful but lots of vendors but if you place you chairs by the water's edge, no one bothers you;
Entertainment/Activities: Next to none;
Staff: Pleasant but slow;
Overall a good resort if you are not expecting frills. I personally have been to other 3 star resorts and had a better time but this was my cheapest trip and worth the money ($699).
